Chapter 36
"Oh my God," Rory mouthed to Logan. Then to Samuel, she said, "I'll be right down, Samuel."
As they walked out the door towards the lobby, they could hear the disagreement in the lobby continuing.
It was still going when they reached the lobby. "Seriously, Keeper of The Gate, do I look like a murderer or rapist to you? Do you think I am hiding a switchblade or something? Oh look! Is this my giant bag of illegal drugs?"
"Paris!" Rory exclaimed as she walked into the lobby. "What are you doing here? How did you even know we were here?" she asked as she hugged her friend.
"I knew you were coming home this weekend from gallivanting around the country and stalking Obama in a bus. I just finished my infectious disease course and had this weekend off. I went to Stars Hollow to see you. I thought you'd be staying there. Geez, what kind of hick fest is happening there? I got stuck behind some slack-jawed farmer pulling a haywagon and had to duck pumpkins 'being chucked' by crazy sugar-hyped children," Paris said taking a breath. "Anyway, I went to your house. Lorelai told me you were here. So I still had the emergency key you gave me when you lived here..." Paris said.
"What emergency key, Paris? I never gave you a key," Rory said.
"Does it matter? I had a key," Paris said.
"You took my keys and made a copy? Really Paris?" Rory said.
"You had my spare key! It is about security, Rory. What if you locked yourself out? What if you fell inside and couldn't make it to the door while Lover Boy here was out with the Drunken Fools Club? It was for your own good. You should really be thanking me," Paris said. "So, getting back to the story at hand, I was trying to use the key when the National Guard here stopped me."
Rory hugged her again. "I really did miss you, Paris. Come on upstairs. We were about to order dinner. You can handle dairy products nowadays, right?" Rory said and she took Paris's arm and started to lead her upstairs.
"I'm sorry, sir. I had no idea she was a friend of Ms. Gilmore. She seemed a bit unstable. I just wanted to check with you," Samuel said.
"Don't worry about it, Sammy. Believe it or not, this is very stable for Paris," Logan said chuckling as he walked back upstairs.
"Wow Huntzberger, don't update much, do you?" Paris commented as she looked around seeing the apartment nearly the same. "Well? Can I stay here tonight? Or should I look for a hotel? I'd rather be at a hotel than hear some crazy, we-are-back-together-sex thing. I have to leave early in the morning to be back for class anyway."
"Paris! When did you ever hear any kind of sex thing?" Rory asked. "Of course you can stay here."
"Good. What? Don't look at me like that for asking. Two lovebirds, back at the original nest... who knows what might go down?" Paris said. "But I didn't really feel like searching for a place tonight."
Logan just shook his head and decided to change the subject, "So how have you been, Paris?"
"Pretty good, medical school is going well. I have to take some psychology courses, and I got a review from one of the head-shrinkers moonlighting as a college professor suggesting I need to work on my bedside manner. The instructor told me I have a harsh, aggressive nature and show little compassion," Paris made a face as she said it. "I know, right? I am going to be a doctor. My job is to save a person's life, not make small chat and charm someone into getting a shot while analyzing their childhood fear of needles. But, my grade depends on it. So, part of my reason for coming out to visit was to work on my socializing and people skills. Rory helped me be likeable enough to win Student Body President at Chilton. I figured some of her sugary sweetness might rub off on me. Or I could learn to fake it enough to pass."
"You're really doing great with that, Paris. Really... off to a great start," Logan joked earning him a poke in the ribs from Rory.
"I thought you were going to go into the research end of things rather than dealing with actual people," Rory said.
"I am. But there are people everywhere. Apparently I intimidate people. Again... not really new news here. It worked for me in journalism. And it probably would have as a lawyer or judge, but I guess not so much in medicine," Paris said. "Doyle seems to think if I play nice for a few years I can open my own practice and be as intimidating as I want."
"How is Doyle? He's working for a paper in Boston, right?" Rory asked.
"Yes, he is Assistant Editor of The Boston Herald now. I still can't believe he followed me there. Did I tell you he took a demotion to be nearer to me?" Paris sighed and said, "He's got good people skills. He was going to tag along tonight, but there was a huge accident on 95, big pile-up. He has crews out covering it, so he had to stick around for that."
"That's a shame. I would have liked to have seen Doyle. Of course he followed you, Paris. He loves you. Maybe we can take a trip to Boston soon," Rory said.
"Still hard to believe sometimes", Paris said. "Yeah, that would be good. You never saw our apartment. We have a nice view of Harvard. And we just redecorated, you know... updated the look. Some people do that, Huntzberger," Paris said snarkily. "Did you say you were getting food? I'm starving."
"Why don't you guys order? I am going to head out a grab some of the things that we will need in the morning since the groceries won't be delivered until tomorrow afternoon. Just call me and let me know where to go to pick up the food," Logan said as he got up and grabbed his jacket.
"Leaving the hens to cackle, Huntzberger? Bet you wish your boys were still around right now," Paris said.
"Just giving you two a little time alone," Logan said. He kissed Rory and made a fast getaway.
Rory and Paris decided to order pizza with mozzarella sticks, stuffed mushrooms, and garlic sticks. Rory called Logan to tell him where to go and when it would be ready. She also reminded him to pick up coffee and PopTarts for the morning. Rory poured both of them a glass of wine and they settled on the couch.
"So, you and Logan, huh?" Paris asked taking a sip of wine. "I'm not surprised, figured it would happen again."
"You told me I was better off without him when we broke up!" Rory said.
"What was I supposed to say? You were miserable for so long. I understood why you said no. Remember how I dumped Doyle when I was making my huge life decision?" Paris asked. "I'm happy for you. You both seem happy."
"That professor is crazy. You showed a lot of compassion during that time. I was a mess," Rory said. "We are doing good. It feels like we never broke up."
"It was like that for me and Doyle too," Paris said.
"We talked about everything that happened. I think we have a much better understanding of each other now. He mentioned asking me to marry him again," Rory said.
"Already?" Paris asked.
"Well, he didn't officially ask, just said he was going to when things were right. Paris, I don't think they can get any more right. I want him to ask again," Rory said.
Paris sighed. "I expect to be asked to be a bridesmaid. I don't know how many other chances I will get given my lack of female friends. But I get to help pick out the dresses and shoes. I am not wearing some of you granny orthopedic shoes," Paris said.
Rory laughed and took a sip of her wine. "Closer to the election, when Peggy gets into town, you have to come have a night with us. I think you could gain a female friend... or you two would kill each other," Rory said.
