Chapter 35

Rory and Logan got an early start the next morning to settle into the New Haven apartment. It wasn't a long drive, but they wanted to have all their things set up and have a chance to review notes before starting work in Hartford the following day. Rory hadn't been back to the area since graduation. Logan took a long route, slowly driving down all the streets while Rory looked out the window smiling and reminiscing.

"God, everything looks the same! I know it hasn't been that long, but it feels like a long time. I want to go walk around Yale soon, peek in at my old room and lecture halls if we can. I want to eat cereal in the cafeteria again. Oh! As an alumna, I should have library privileges too, right? I hope so! I want to visit all the books again," Rory said.

"Ace, I can guarantee you can go anywhere on that campus you like. Between the millions my family has donated and the building that has your name on it, I would say you have the golden key," Logan said. He glanced over at her and gave her a soft smile, "But that sounds really good. We will go for a walk around campus real soon."

Rory groaned, "I nearly forgot 'my' building. What were my grandparents thinking? I am so glad they scaled back the lettering."

Finally they arrived at the apartment building. Rory got out the car and just stared up at it, a million memories flooding her mind. She was afraid she would feel some sadness or mixed feelings, but all she felt was a sense of happiness and peace. She felt like she was home, the only home she had shared with Logan.

The doorman followed by a man in a suit came out to help them with their bags. Logan handed him a few, but told him he would come down for the rest later. "Samuel, do you remember Ms Rory Gilmore?" he asked the man in the suit. "I know you have been here for many years. Rory lived here for a while in college. She will be staying with me for the next four weeks. If possible, could you get her the keys she will need?"

"Of course, sir. Ms Gilmore, how are you?" Samuel asked.

"It's so good to see you again, Samuel," Rory said. "I didn't expect to see you."

"When Mr. Huntzberger purchased the building, he convinced me to put off my retirement a few years and stay on. He even let me and my wife move into one of the apartments."

"Samuel runs this place! I couldn't do it without him. An apartment was the least I could give him! He is like my concierge, landlord, building manager all in one," Logan said patting Samuel on the back.

"Good to have you back, sir. Is there anything I can get for you and Ms Gilmore?" Samuel asked.

"Nope, we're all good. We are just going to head up to the apartment," Logan said.

"Very good, I will have William bring up the rest of your luggage and park your car," Samuel said.

Logan unlocked the door and let Rory walk in first. She walked in slowly and wandered around the apartment. She saw very familiar surroundings. She smiled at the sailboat and ran her hand over the pool table. "Logan, it looks almost exactly the same!" she said in amazement.

"I tried to get it back as close as I could," he put his head down, slightly embarrassed. "I told you I went through a rough time after things fell apart between us. In the rare times I wasn't working, I would come here and just hide out. I could almost pretend things never happened, like you were at the Daily News or something and coming home in a little while. I tried to fool myself," He ran his hand through his hair and looked at her sheepishly, "It never worked completely. I'm sure you think that's silly. But I could at least pretend for a little while."

Rory's eyes filled with tears as she crossed the room to him. She wrapped her arms around his waist and looked up at him, "Not silly. Very sweet. You had a Rory place. I didn't have any place I could go. I was scared to come anywhere near here. I wore that bracelet you gave me in Martha's Vineyard every day for over a year though. It just made me feel closer to you, that you were still around."

He smiled and kissed her. "I am so happy we have another chance. I love you."

"I love you too, Logan."

They spent the next few hours setting up the apartment with their belongings. William had brought all their bags up from the car. Rory realized all her clothes were either dirty or hopelessly wrinkled from being in suitcases so long. She did some laundry and ironed things for the next week. She took inventory of the kitchen and discovered they needed to have groceries delivered. She started making a list. She was anxious to start her new position and did not want to have to worry about these domestic chores later.

Logan made a few calls while she unpacked. He also set up the computers and office equipment they would need on hand in case any stories broke while they were home. He checked email and was pleased to see his staff had been working hard all weekend.

"Peggy sent in a couple good stories. She managed to talk to Obama's campaign manager about the last few rallies and their projections. You'll probably want to get them printed tomorrow. Mark got some great stats for it, lots of charts and statistics. People love them," Logan said.

"Ok, great. I feel like we have been slacking while everyone else works. I'll have a look at them later on tonight", she said. She wandered around the kitchen opening cabinets. "I'm starving and we have absolutely nothing! Is that really good Chinese place still around the corner? They delivered, right?" Rory asked.

"Yup. The takeout menus are in the same drawer they used to be," Logan answered.

Rory moved to the other side of the kitchen, opened a drawer, and pulled out a stack of paper menus. They sat at the table debating over what to order when the intercom buzzed.

Logan got up and walked to the box by the door. He pushed a button and said, "Hi Samuel, what's up?"

The box crackled a little, then they heard Samuel's voice, "Sorry to bother you, Mr Huntzberger. Ms Gilmore has a guest that is quite adament that..." His voice trailed off and they heard louder crackling.

Then another voice filled the room, "Gilmore! You up there?"
