Chapter 20
Inside Emily's massive guest powder room, Lorelai looked at Rory and said, "So...how's it going?"
"It's going quite well, Mother. How are you?" Rory said innocently blinking.
"You and Logan are pretty serious again, aren't you?" Lorelai cut right to the chase and asked.
"I thought he was going to ask me to marry him again tonight," Rory said. Then she briefly summarized her conversation with Logan in the limousine.
"Wow, the job sounds interesting. But even more interesting is his attitude and approach on all this. He sure seems to know you and what you think. So you think it will happen soon?" Lorelai said.
"I don't know, Mom. But I kind of really hope so. It all just feels so right," Rory said.
Lorelai put her arm around Rory as they left the powder room. She said, " I could tell. It is looking right. You two just look right. But, I wouldn't let Grandma know yet. She will start making out the guest list and planning the wedding."
Everyone was settled in the dining room when Lorelei and Rory entered. Logan stood to pull out Rory's chair. Lorelai elbowed Luke and whispered, "Take notes, I expect to be seated like the queen I am from here on out."
"Somehow you would manage to trip over the chair and take us both down along with the entire table if I tried that," Luke whispered back. He squeezed her knee under the table and smiled at her.
"So, Rory, Logan, what are these big plans you mentioned for tomorrow night? Are you two doing something exciting in the city?" Emily asked.
"You young people do seem to know all the upcoming places," Richard said.
"Actually, Richard, my good friend, Finn, knows of the upcoming place this time. He is arranging an outing with some of our old friends from Yale," Logan said.
"Ah yes, Yale friends. They will be friends for forever. Yale does breed friendships that last a lifetime," Richard said.
"The infamous Yale cults. Don't drink any Koolaide tomorrow night, guys," Lorelai said.
Emily shot Lorelai another look, "Really, Lorelai. You just don't understand the college bonding experience."
"Well, anyway," Rory interrupted, "It should be a good time. I haven't really haven't seen anyone since graduation. We are taking Peggy with us. She can't wait to meet Finn."
"Finn also seems to be looking forward to it," Logan said.
"After this debate, you should be around more, right? We let April stay in your room for a few weeks over the summer, but otherwise it hasn't been used. It is ready and waiting for you," Luke said.
"Oh yeah, I talked to April about her visit. She seems to love Stars Hollow," Rory said. "And, we will see. I am not exactly sure what I will be doing next," Rory said, glancing at Logan.
"You know, April is an excellent beginner tennis player and quite the polite young lady," Emily said proudly, surprising Rory.
"Your Grandma took April to the club and got her a few lessons while she was here. I think she is replacing us," Lorelai explained to Rory while raising an eyebrow.
"Well, she is sort of my granddaughter now. She should be exposed to these things and different people. It is important she be introduced to society and know the proper behaviors," Emily defended, "Rory, you just recently said you were my only granddaughter. I suppose that isn't totally true anymore."
Luke said, "It was great, Emily. She had a nice time. It was very nice of you to take her."
"Yes, Grandma, I think it was very sweet. I can't wait to see her again. I always wanted a sister," Rory said.
"You can have mine. Honor likes you more than me anyway," Logan joked. Then he asked Richard," How about you, Richard? Been hitting the club lately? I know my golf swing is getting rusty. Perhaps we can go out after the election."
They chatted throughout the rest of the dinner. Then they retired back to the living room for after dinner drinks.
"Well, this has been fun. Thank you for having us, Grandma and Grandpa. But we should probably get going. We have a long drive back," Rory said.
The group all said their goodbyes. Luke and Lorelai also decided to call it a night. So the four of them walked outside to their cars together.
"See? That wasn't so bad," Rory said to her mother.
"Oh she just had enough drinks and she was too happy seeing you two together to not chastise the maid for letting those peas roll off the serving platter," Lorelai said. Then she sighed, "Nah, it really isn't as numbing as it used to be coming here."
"Rory, Logan, good to see you. Hopefully we'll see you again soon," Luke said as he headed for his truck. The engine started with a loud roar.
"My limousine seems to be pulling out. I gotta go open my own door and climb in it," Lorelai said as she looked over and saw Frank holding the door of their limousine open for Logan and Rory. She hugged Rory and then Logan. Then she went over to the truck and made exaggerated motions of opening the door and climbing before she got in with Luke.
Logan and Rory laughed and waved. Then they settled into the back of their limousine and let Frank drive them back to Hempstead.
Rory and Logan opened the door to the suite quietly, mindful to not wake Peggy. They were surprised to see Peggy still up sitting on the couch with her lap top.
She looked at them and grinned as they walked in, then she hopped up and shrieked, "Atlantic City! We are going to Atlantic City! The Taj Mahal Casino and Resort!! Trump himself calls it the '8th Wonder of the World'!"
