Part 56
As expected, the wedding was beautiful. The enormous barn was decorated in a country-snow theme. Tan fabric resembling burlap was used as table cloths. Mason jars sat on tables overflowing with white hydrangea and twigs. Steph's bouquet was also made of white hydrangea, but had dusty miller, white roses, and curly willow sprigs tucked into it. Following Rory and Logan's example, Steph and Colin didn't really have a wedding party. They went very simple for the ceremony as well. Rosemary stood next to Steph as maid of honor while Finn stood next to Colin as best man in the simple ceremony.
The reception was equally as relaxed and low-key. A band played in one corner of the room while waiters served guests entrees from the kitchen. Family and invited guests sat at tables of varying sizes around the perimeter of the room. All of the friends sat together at a large circular table in the middle. Rory's favorite part was dinner. She had a steak that was so good she made a mental note to tell Sookie about it. The waiter announced that it was organically farm raised on site. Blocking out the memories she had of passing the cute cows on the way in, Rory devoured it in minutes and stole some of Logan's as well. Everyone then watched in amazement as Rory put away two desserts.
The band started playing faster music after dinner and the group hit the dance floor. The lights were dimmed so the only light came from the lights strung up in the open rafters and thick black cast iron chandeliers adjusted to a very low setting. After a few dances, Rory began to feel tired. Her feet were sore from the heels she wore. All it took was one mention of her fatigue to Logan and he was leading her back to the cabin. The rest of their friends understood and said they would see them for breakfast before everyone departed.
Rory and Logan got back to their cabin and were surprised to see there had been a turn down service in their absence. The bed was folded down. Fresh towels were in the bathroom. The fireplace was once again ready to light. As Rory went into the mini-frig, she noticed everything had been restocked. There was also a new basket on fruit and snacks on top of the refrigerator. She smiled as she rummaged through knowing it was Logan's doing. She made note of some butter cookies she planned to attack later.
"Do you want a shower while I light this?" Logan asked. "Then I will rub your feet and ankles. I don't know why you insisted on heels. Your dress was so long no one could have seen anyway."
"Exactly. The dress was too long. If I didn't wear the heels, I would have tripped on it all night," Rory spoke of the flowing cream colored dress she wore to the wedding. " My feet are ok. I haven't gained that much weight yet! "
"I'm not saying you did," Logan quickly said. Then he explained, "I just read in the baby book that you may be retaining water. It could cause your ankles to swell. It is important to wear comfortable shoes and get your feet up when possible."
"When have you been reading baby books? I haven't even read a book yet!" Rory asked amazed.
Sheepishly, Logan ducked his head to light the fire and said, "I just picked up a few. Figured I should know what's going on in there."
"A few? How many baby books are you hiding from me?" Rory laughed. Then at his embarrassed look, she softened and said, "That's sweet, Logan. I love that you care so much to read up on all this. Obviously I haven't done it yet. It's good that one of us is informed."
"Well, at this stage, I don't feel much a part of it. I got to see the baby on the screen and have a picture in my wallet, but I can't feel changes or anything. I know you aren't looking forward to gaining weight and all that, but I am. I think it will become more real for me then," Logan explained. "So, until then, I'll read and learn."
Rory bent and hugged him from behind. She whispered in his ear, "You really are sweet. I love you."
Logan turned his head and kissed her. He said, "I love you too. Now humor me and take off those damn shoes!"
Rory laughed and sat on the bed. She said, "I will take off the damn shoes. And then I will take a nice, hot shower. Maybe I'll even let you rub my feet while I sample those awesome looking cookies." She removed the shoes and let them fall on the floor. Then she pulled her phone out her purse and said, "I just want to check my messages before I hop in the shower."
"Everyone is here. Well, everyone but your mother. I would bet she would call repeatedly if she needed you. Hell, she would call the main desk and have them hunt you down if she needed you. I think you should just shower and relax," Logan grumbled.
"Oh hush. It will just take me a minute to... oh! Oh no!" Rory said staring at her phone.
Logan jumped up and rushed over, "What? What's wrong?"
"Lane sent me a text. Sara was rushed to the hospital. She was having bad upper stomach pains and a horrible headache. They thought she should be checked out and wanted to make sure the baby was ok," Rory said.
"Sara? Brian's Sara?" Logan asked.
"Yes. She's not due for another month, a little over a month actually," Rory said concerned. "I hope everything is ok. I want to call Lane real quick and see what's going on."
Rory sat back on the bed already feeling the warmth from the fire. Logan sat on the bed and grabbed one of her feet. He pulled it into his lap and began massaging her ankle. She smiled and dialed Lane's number.
"Rory? Hey. I'm sorry for the text. I didn't want to worry you or wreck the wedding for you. I just thought you would want to know about Sara," Lane said in one long spurt when she answered the phone.
"No, don't worry about it. We just got back to the room. I checked my phone and saw your message. What's going on? How's Sara and the baby?" Rory asked as Logan's hands moved to the arch of her foot.
"Well, we are all here, the whole band plus security detail. My mom is even here! She insisted her sister stay with Steve and Kwan. Brian has become like a son to her over the years. She has managed to pretty well close down this wing of the hospital for us. The doctors are terrified of her and scurrying around doing all sorts of tests. The nurses are hiding and only come out when she yells," Lane reported.
Rory laughed and said, "Sorry, it's not a funny situation, but I can just picture Mrs. Kim directing hospital staff."
"Oh yeah, it's quite the show. Sara is in excellent hands. Mama wouldn't have it any other way. Brian is a mess. Mama is yelling at him too, telling him he must be a man and be there for Sara," Lane said.
"Poor Brian. I hope he remembered his inhaler. He told me stress makes his asthma worse," Rory said.
"Nope. He forgot it. But Mama demanded they open the pharmacy and get him one immediately. So he is being taken care of too," Lane said. "Gil and Zack are afraid to move from their chairs in the waiting room. Every so often Mama instructs one of them to take a short walk up and down the hall with Brian."
"Well, at least Mrs. Kim is keeping everyone busy. Any idea when you'll know more?" Rory asked.
"There's a doctor walking towards Mama right now. Hang on a few minutes, let me listen in..." Lane said. Then Rory heard static as she assumed Lane must have pocketed her phone.
Rory turned her attention to Logan. She began to fill him in on what was going on. "I am on hold. Lane and Mrs. Kim are talking to a doctor. They were doing tests. I don't know, maybe they know something now. I hope Sara and the baby will be ok," she said fearfully. "Now that I am pregnant, this stuff seems so much more scary."
"I'm sure she will be fine. She is pretty far along. Even if she delivered tonight, there is an excellent chance things will be fine," Logan said reassuringly.
"You read that far in the books?" Rory asked incredulously.
"I had to find out how the story ended," Logan said attempting a joke.
Rory began to respond when she heard Lane come back on the line. "Rory? Rory, you still there?"
"Yes, I am here. What's happening?" Rory asked.
"I am going to be an aunt tonight!" Lane said excitedly.
"What? She is having the baby tonight?" Rory asked. "Is that ok? Isn't it early?"
"Ok, so, Mama just grilled the doctor. Here's what I was able to understand. Sara has developed a condition called preeclamsia. Her blood pressure is going up. And there is protein in her urine, not sure what that has to do with anything, but the doctor said it. Anyway, she is going to have a c-section. The baby is far enough along that it is safe to deliver. She is 34 weeks, almost 35 weeks along. The baby may have to stay in the NICU for a few days depending on how it's lungs have developed. But the doctor didn't really seem concerned. He seemed more concerned for Sara and said this is the best option," Lane summarized.
"Oh wow. How is Sara doing?" Rory asked.
"She's scared, but alright. Brian has pulled himself together. And I think she feels better knowing Mama is directing all this. Her parents were away for the weekend. But they are on their way here now, should be here in a few hours," Lane answered. Rory heard talking in the background. Then Lane said in a rushed voice, "Oh, hey, Rory? I have to go. Mama is beckoning me."
"Alright. We will be home tomorrow. I'd like to come by in the afternoon and see Sara and the baby," Rory said.
"Ok. I'll call or text you with any more news," Lane said rushed. "Bye!"
"So, all is good? Or as good as can be expected right now?" Logan asked as she hung up.
"Sounds that way. I think Hep Alien is going to have to donate a good amount of money to the hospital towards the pain and suffering of the doctors and staff inflicted by Mrs. Kim, but, yes, Sara and the baby sound like they are ok. And we will be meeting the baby sooner than we thought!" Rory laughed.
"I hope you don't think any less of me for admitting that woman scares the crap out of me too," Logan said.
Rory laughed and snuggled down in the bed with Logan. "I would think something was wrong with you if she didn't scare you!" As she laid her head on his chest, she said, "And I am glad you are reading the baby books. None of the baby stuff seems to scare you."
"Not as much as Mrs. Kim, but it scares me," Logan said holding her close as she dozed off. He kissed her forehead. As she slept, he whispered, "It all scares me more than you know, but I will always take care of you and our little one."
