Part 51
"Ok, so we will see you in a few hours, Mrs. Huntzberger," the chirpy receptionist told Rory as the call ended. Rory and Logan couldn't wait to call for an appointment. Rory had called the doctor Logan he remembered Honor used in Hartford as soon as the office opened.
Rory turned towards Logan who was perched on the bed and said, "Wow. I am going to have to get used to that."
Logan laughed, "Yeah, having the last name Huntzberger opens a few doors."
"I mean, 'Gilmore' is a door opener in some circles, but that woman completely changed her tune when I said my full name. Rory Gilmore Huntzberger." Rory laughed and continued, "There were no openings for a month for Rory Gilmore, but Rory Huntzberger can come on in later this morning!"
"My parents donated a lot of money after Honor had Henry there. They took really good care of both her and Henry. No one knew he was going to come so early and she would have problems. But the hospital was great. My parents donated enough for the new NICU unit, so they better get a Huntzberger in same day!" Logan said.
"I usually don't like to throw around names, but I don't mind in this case. I really didn't want to wait a month!" Rory said packing a bag with the clothes that were strewn around the room. "Now I just need to avoid my mom until this afternoon. God, the way she came in here last night 'to say goodnight'! She was scoping things out. If you weren't here, she would have questioned me for sure. She knows. I know she knows!"
"Well, all we have to do it get packed up and get to the car. We'll head right to Hartford for your appointment. By the time we get back here, we will have answers and be reassured everything is fine, so you can tell her," Logan said logically.
"You better set off a smoke bomb as we run out the door! The woman is sniffing around. Distract her with chocolate or something and let me slip out," Rory said as she went into the bathroom to gather her toiletries.
Chuckling, Logan began to pack some of his things. He carefully wrapped back up the pregnancy test. He wasn't sure how to preserve it, but he wanted to try. He stared at it again, still a bit in disbelief. Then he tucked the box into his bag.
As Rory and Logan pulled up to a large brick building with white pillars in Hartford, Rory said, "We're a little early. I didn't think we would be able to sneak out so easily. I have never been so happy to hear a smoke alarm. You didn't need to throw a smoke bomb after all. Sookie provided real smoke!"
"Yeah, that was pretty convenient. Your mom was so busy consoling and directing guests, she didn't even notice us leave," Logan agreed. "It's freezing out here. We shouldn't wait in the car. It's probably not good for you or the baby. Let's head in. Maybe they'll get us in early."
Rory shook her head and smiled to herself. This was going to be a long pregnancy if Logan kept worrying about every little thing. But she thought his concern was cute. She said, "I'm ready. Let's test this Huntzberger name power!"
They got out of the car and walked into the building. A receptionist smiled and asked, "May I help you?"
"Yes, I am Rory Huntzberger, here for an appointment with Dr. Miller. I think we are a bit early," Rory said.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Huntzberger. No worries, we can take you back right now," the receptionist said with a smile as she summoned a nurse.
Rory turned to Logan. He smiled and winked as they followed the nurse past the main desk and into the offices and exam rooms. They made a brief stop in a small room where Rory was weighed and her blood pressure was taken. The nurse handed Rory a small cup and asked her for a urine sample. Logan went to wait in the exam room as Rory complied with the nurse's request.
A short time later, Rory sat in a paper gown on the exam table while Logan paced nervously around the room. He kept glancing at the posters of female anatomy on the walls and either smiling or grimacing. He paused in front of a plastic model of a uterus. He bent and turned his head examining it. "I saw all this stuff in health class and on medical shows, but it's a little different being in one of the rooms," he said a little uncomfortable.
"I know. Even after years of coming to these places, it never really becomes a comfortable place. At least with a routine exam I know what to expect. This is all new to me too," Rory said grabbing his hand and squeezing it reassuringly.
Logan turned his head and smiled at her. Before he could speak, there was a soft knock on the door. Without thinking, he said, "Yes? Come in."
Dr. Miller walked in with a smile on her face. She glanced at Logan, the focused on Rory. She said, "Oh good. For a moment, I thought I had my first male patient!" She walked to Rory and extended her hand, "Pleasure to meet you, Rory. I am Dr. Miller."
"Nice to meet you, Dr. Miller. Nope, I am the patient. This is my husband, Logan," Rory said.
Logan held out his hand to the doctor and said, "Nice to meet you, Dr. Miller. My sister speaks very highly of you and this practice."
"Oh, we love Honor here. She is such a character! Always brightens our day when she comes for a visit," Dr. Miller laughed. Then she added, "We also appreciate your family's contributions to our center and the hospital." She looked at Rory again, "We are so pleased that you chose us to care for you and your baby."
The nurse that took Rory's urine sample slipped into the room and handed the doctor a sheet of paper before slipping out again. Dr Miller scanned the document and smiled at Rory and Logan. She said, "Well, the urine tests confirms you are expecting. Let's just have a look at you and see how things are going."
Rory endured the physical exam while Logan looked on in interest. Because she was so early in her pregnancy, the doctor explained she would do a transvaginal ultrasound rather than the standard over-the-belly type. Rory cringed and Logan looked scared.
The doctor reassured them both that it would be fast and yield the most accurate results. After prepping Rory and inserting the wand, she adjusted the monitor so they all could see the screen. "Ah, there we go," Dr. Miller said observing the screen. They could all see a blob looking thing that looked vaguely human. There was a fluttering mass that the doctor pointed out as the heart beating. Rory and Logan glanced at each other with huge grins. Then their gazes gravitated back to the screen. Dr. Miller was also looking at the screen. She frowned slightly and began taking measurements.
"Is everything ok, Doctor?" Logan immediately asked with concern.
"Yes, yes, everything looks just fine. It is a very healthy looking fetus," she said diverting her attention to the charts she had on the table next to her. "The dates and the measurements just don't seem to add up..."
She carefully saved the images on the screen and removed the wand. She handed Rory some tissues to clean up and allowed her to sit up on the table. Then she rolled her stool over and asked, "You said you only skipped one period, correct?"
Rory nodded and said, "That's right. I didn't have it last month. I thought it was just stress. We have had a lot of changes lately."
"Yes, that can cause a woman to skip a month for sure. Did you perhaps spot or have a lighter than normal period before that?" Dr. Miller asked.
"Yes, now that I remember it. It was lighter than normal," Rory said. She glanced at Logan and said, "That was the month we thought I was pregnant, remember? The test said no and I got it a short time later. I was so upset that after I saw blood, I didn't pay much attention." Rory turned again to the doctor, "Is that a problem?" Rory asked concerned.
Dr. Miller looked up from her chart and patted Rory's hand. She smiled at her and glanced at Logan. Then she said, "No, it is absolutely not a problem. Well, that is unless you mind being parents a few weeks earlier." At their befuddled looks, she said, "You are measuring just about eight weeks along. I assume you thought you would be more in the range of four or five weeks. But I think you got pregnant earlier than you thought. It is actually very common for many women to be fooled and have light bleeding the first month after conception. It's harmless, doesn't hurt the fetus. All it really does is mess up our dates a little!" She laughed. "And, the pregnancy test you took would not have come up positive at that point. There wasn't enough of the hCG hormone in your system to give a positive result. It multiplies rapidly, so testing a few days later probably would have given a positive result." She glanced down again and said, "We are going to put your due date at August 24th."
"Oh wow," Logan said staring again at the computer screen at the tiny blob that was there child. "But, it's ok? It's healthy? Can you tell what it is?"
Dr. Miller laughed. She turned to Logan and said, "Yes, it is perfectly healthy. But, no, I won't be able to tell the sex until at least 16 weeks, possibly a little later. We can try at 16 weeks if you like." She shifted her paperwork and turned off the monitor after hitting a few buttons. "I'll leave you to get dressed. Then you can meet me in my office. I can answer any questions you have and we can go over the blood work you will need to have done and a few other details. I'll also have copies of the ultrasound pictures for you to take home," Dr. Miller said standing up and heading for the door.
After she left, Logan embraced Rory. He said, "Wow. It's real. And it's happening even sooner than we thought."
"I have been pregnant a while and didn't even know!" Rory said in amazement. "I don't believe it! I hope I didn't do anything wrong."
"Dr. Miller just said everything looked very healthy. I think you may need to cut the coffee intake, but you haven't been drinking much or anything else dangerous. We'll ask her," Logan said.
Rory got dressed quickly and stopped Logan just before he opened the door. He turned and hugged her. Rory tilted her face up and kissed him. "Ok, now we can talk to the doctor."
The talk with Dr. Miller went well. Rory was scheduled to have blood drawn and set up with a routine of prenatal vitamins. She was advised to limit her coffee intake to a cup in the morning and perhaps another half or small cup for the rest of the day. She had a follow up appointment in a few weeks.
As they got in the car, Rory suddenly said excitedly, "Holy crap! Lane isn't that far ahead of me then! I think she is only like 14 weeks or so right now! Our babies are going to grow up together!"
"I didn't think of that. That's awesome. This kid will pretty much be born with an almost sibling!" Logan laughed. "I guess you really want to tell Lane soon then, huh?"
"I have to tell Mom first. She will never forgive me if I don't!" Rory said. She paused and asked, "Is it too early? I thought you weren't supposed to tell people until after the first trimester."
"I don't think there are any laws in Connecticut. We did just get a pretty positive report. I think we can tell a few people. We'll save the newspaper announcement for a few weeks," Logan said.
"Good. I really want to tell Mom and Lane!" Rory said.
"What do you say we stop for a late lunch, then head back to Stars Hollow? Your mom will probably be getting home from the inn by then. We can tell her and Luke together at dinner," Logan suggested.
"Ooooh, lunch sounds good. I think I want pizza. And maybe a burger. Lots of fries. Maybe we can find a taco place too!" Rory said dreaming of food.
"You aren't using the excuse of eating for two. I saw that thing. We have a stack of pictures. It's tiny. It cannot possibly eat that much!" Logan said laughing.
"Oh shush. It takes a lot of energy to grow a Huntzberger!" Rory countered. "You want me to do it right, don't you?"
Logan looked at her out of the side of his eye and said, "So pizza and a burger first?"
