Part 5
Rory sat frozen as Logan and the woman named Claudia walked into the room. Rory just stared at Logan in disbelief. She could not believe he was there. Logan looked the same. He was wearing dark jeans and a brown leather jacket. Claudia was a tall, thin woman with unnatural blonde hair. She was wearing skin tight pants and a Hep Alien shirt that was stretched ridiculously tight across her ample chest. She had on dark leather high heel boots that ended just below her knee. Rory disliked her immediately. She wanted to believe this Claudia was not Logan's type, but she remembered the bridesmaids. This sort of bimbo was exactly Logan's type... or was his type before Rory.
Logan didn't see her at first. Lane and Rory locked eyes for a moment. Gil and Brian were sitting closest to the door, so Logan and his date approached them first. They made small talk, Claudia doing most of the talking. From her seat on the couch, Rory could hear she was not the most intelligent woman on Earth and had an annoying laugh that almost sounded like a wheeze. Rory disliked more her just for that.
Logan and Claudia moved to greet Lane and Zack next. Lane was very uncomfortable and unsure of what to do. Her eyes grew wide and she glanced at Rory. Logan still didn't notice Rory. Zack said, "Hey man. It's, uh, nice to see you again."
"Zack, hi. Yeah, it's good to see you too. Lane, how are you?" Logan asked.
Lane began to answer but was interrupted by Claudia. "Oh my God! You really do know them! I thought you were making it up! This is so cool. Can we hang out sometime? My friends back home will not believe this," Claudia bubbled.
Lane didn't say anything, but kept looking at Rory. Finally, Logan caught her eye movement and followed her gaze. His mouth opened briefly when he saw Rory sitting across the room. She looked back and gave a weak smile. Rory rose to her feet and crossed the room. She said, "Logan, hi."
"Hello, Rory," he said coolly.
"Rory? Hey, are you..." Claudia began.
"Claud, I think you said you wanted a few pictures, right? We should probably get them and then get back to the group. They are waiting for us, remember?" Logan said.
Claudia snuggled up to Gil and Zack with a huge smile on her face while Logan snapped some photos for her. Then he hurried her along. He said goodbye to the band. He looked at Rory.
Rory put her hand on his arm and said, "Logan..."
Logan stared at her hand on his arm like it was a snake and backed away. He said, "It was good to see you." Then he walked out with Claudia.
Rory collapsed back on the couch after they left. Lane immediately sat down next to her. Zack put an hand on her shoulder and asked, "You ok, Ror? You want a drink or something?"
"No. Yes. I don't know," Rory stammered.
"Who was the dude? He almost seemed mad at you," Gil asked. "Should we have kicked his ass?"
"Yeah, what's going on, Ror?" Brian asked concerned.
Zack knew there was some girl time needed. "Come on, let's go have a beer and see if we can catch the score of the game," he said as he led Gil and Brian out of the meeting room and back to their dressing rooms. "I'll explain it all back there," he said quietly to them closing the door gently behind him.
"Rory, oh my God. Are you ok?" Lane asked again taking Rory's hand. She looked at Rory who had tears forming in her eyes. "Oh, Ror, come here," Lane said as she hugged her best friend.
"He wouldn't even talk to me. He barely looked at me. He recoiled at my touch," Rory managed to say as she sobbed into Lane's shoulder. "He looked at me like he hated me."
"I know you still love him, but you're better off," Lane said. "Just look at that chick he was with. What was her name Claudia DuPont? What kind name is that?"
Rory wiped her eyes and leaned back on the couch. "A very rich name is what it is. Bet Shira just loves her."
"What do you mean? Do you know her? Did she go to Yale or something?" Lane asked trying to figure out what was going on and who that woman was.
"No, she didn't go to Yale or at least not that I know of. And no, I don't really know her. I know OF her. She's a DuPont, obviously. You know the name. I'm sure you've heard it. They pretty much own Delaware, very rich family," Rory said. "Very much a suitable choice for a Huntzberger."
"Oh, yeah, the name is familiar. They have a bunch of foundations and museums and stuff, right? Actually, they have a hand in everything if I am thinking of the right family. They are in manufacturing too, aren't they? Do you think she is part of that family?" Lane asked.
"I have absolutely no doubt. Her boots probably cost a year's tuition at Yale. I'd even bet she is who Shira and Mitchum hand picked for Logan," Rory said beginning to cry again.
"Rory, I knew you still had feelings for him, but didn't realize you would be so crushed. You barely talk about him anymore," Lane said.
"I can't. I messed it up so badly," Rory said. "I still love him, Lane. It was killing me sitting here while he was in the room. I wanted to claw the bimbo's eyes out and then wrap myself around him."
"I don't understand. This whole time you have been here, you have barely mentioned him. Why haven't you tried to call him or see him if you still have feelings?" Lane asked.
"After graduation, after I said no to his proposal, I did try to contact him. We spoke a few times and were texting a bit," Rory said.
"What? You never told me that," Lane said.
"I was on the campaign tour. I was lonely and thinking about him constantly. So I called him a few times. We talked for hours every time. It was just so nice. I thought maybe we could work something out, figure it out," Rory said.
"So what happened? Why did you stop talking?" Lane asked.
"It was all my fault. I wasn't expecting him and I was in such a bad mood. He came to me and I think he wanted to try again. I broke his heart all over again," Rory said.
"How? What do you mean?" Lane asked.
"Like I said, I was working on the campaign trail. You remember how miserable I was that whole time. We were at some dirt bag hotel. Hugo had just reamed me out..."
