Part 49

The sun was shining brightly the next morning.  The snow had completely stopped and the winds had died down.  The Dragonfly was blanketed in white snow that glistened in the bright sunlight.  Clumps of white hung from the pine trees and on the eves of the roof making the inn look like a holiday portrait.  Already the steady scrape of Gypsy's and the city's plows could be heard clearing the roads.

The older members of the wedding party were gathered around the dining room table sipping coffee and eating the breakfast Luke had made.  They were making plans for their departure.

"I assume the roads in town will be clear enough by mid-morning to at least reach the main highways," Mitchum stated.

"Assume nothing.  You do know what they say about that,"  Lorelai said.

"Lorelai!"  Emily said immediately.

"Mom, I was just trying to say that things tend to move a little slower here in Stars Hollow.  Things may not be cleaned up until this afternoon,"  Lorelai said.

"There aren't that many roads,"  Francine said.  "How long can it possibly take?"

"No, there aren't that many roads.  It isn't amount quantity.  It's about quality,"  Lorelai said.

"I need to get back to Hartford. What does that mean?"  Richard demanded.

Luke set down another full coffee carafe and said, "What it means is that Taylor is as anal about snow is he is about everything else.  There's snow on the street.  You plow it to the side and you're good to go, right?  That's the normal scenerio, right?"  He paused and shook his head before continuing, "Nope!  Welcome to Stars Hollow where Taylor is in charge."  He gave Richard and Mitchum a small smile and cocked his head before saying, "You see, when snow is plowed, the blade also removes dirt from the street and throws it several feet off to the side of the road. We can't have dirty snow.  That just looks unsightly.  Taylor hates it.  So, he makes Gyspy and the guys plow the top layers as normal, but then go back and do a second pass very slowly.  This way most of the dirty, unsightly snow stays closer to the road and doesn't ruin the rest of what he calls the 'clean, pure snow'."

"So, we have to wait until each street is plowed twice?" Shira asked.

"Well, no.  Just the main street.  He closes it and doesn't allow cars until it's done,"  Luke said.  At her questioning look, he explained, "Cars leave tracks that can refreeze into ruts later.  That is a dirty safety hazard.  He definitely doesn't allow that."

"We have a limo coming at noon.  Do you think Taylor will have the roads open by then?"  Mitchum asked.

"Probably.  If not all the roads, definitely the main road through town.  Worst case is you have to walk there to meet your limo,"  Lorelai said munching on a piece of toast.

"I really don't even know if she's joking,"  Emily said to Francine shaking her head.

"No worries, Emily. We will get out of here,"  Richard said.

"Good.  I really should try to get to the club today or tomorrow.  I am sure we will be reimbursed for all the money we already put down, but I want to make sure they aren't adding in extra charges for the food they had to purchase.  It wasn't us that made it snow after all,"  Emily said.

Shira sighed, "It's still such a shame we couldn't have the party.  It would have been nice to introduce them to society properly."

Francine thought for a moment.  She looked at Emily and Shira and said, "The Haydens have always hosted a Christmas party at the club for select friends and associates.  Perhaps we could open it to more people this year and have a joint holiday party and wedding party."

"Oh, that's a lovely idea, Francine.  I agree with Shira.  They do need to be formally introduced and announced to society as a couple," Emily said.

Shira smiled, pleased she had a part in this idea.  She said, "I'll help any way I can.  Just let me know what you need from me."

Francine got a small smile on her face, looked at Mitchum and Richard, and said, "Do you know any good DJ's? We would need one with a diverse music collection to suit all dance preferences."

Mitchum groaned, "Aww man, that really happened, didn't it?"  He referenced the Y.M.C.A. dance rendition he had performed with Richard.

Sheepishly, Richard said, "I am afraid it did.  At least there is no proof of that event."

Finn and the rest of the LDB entered the dining room as Richard finished speaking.  Finn smiled and began fiddling with his phone.  The room then filled with music.  "Young men, there's no need to feel down; I said young men, pick yourself off the ground;  I said young man, cause you're in a new town; There's no need to be unhappy..."

"Very funny, Finn," Mitchum said.

"Yes, yes, I am sure we will all remember it for a long time," Richard said.

Finn, Colin, and Robert grabbed Logan.  They put their arms around each other's shoulders to form a chorus line.  At the top of their lungs, they all began singing, "It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A!  It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A!"

Lorelai, Shira, and all the girls created the letters with her arms while laughing.  Francine and Emily shook their heads.  Richard and Mitchum shifted uncomfortably in their chairs.

After the boys had their fun and were seated having breakfast, Mitchum hurriedly changed the subject.  He said, "Plows are out.  How are you all getting back to Hartford?"

"I just got off the phone with my service before I came down here.  They are sending a car in the next couple hours.  We are going to cram everyone in,"  Robert said.  "We'll drop everyone off where they need to go."

"The rooms are blocked off for another night.  You all don't have to rush out of here," Lorelai offered.

"Thanks, Love, but I need to get back to the real world and all the responsibilities that have bestowed upon me since graduation," Finn said.

"Yeah, thank you, but I have an appointment set up with a caterer for my wedding tomorrow morning," Steph said.  Her statement began a conversation between her and Shira, Emily, and Francine.  They were all curious as to her arrangements so far.  Though Colin and Steph had told their families they got married in Vegas, it was still a secret from all of society.  They had agreed to play along with another wedding just as Rory and Logan had done.

After breakfast, everyone scattered to their rooms to pack before the cars came to retrieve them and take them home.

As the cars waited outside, Rory and Logan hugged their friends and family members.  They thanked them for coming and apologized for the turn of events.  Their friends drove away with the Village People blaring from the speakers while they made the letters once again out the windows.

"That joke is just never going to be laid to rest, is it?"  Richard mumbled as he shook his head.  He said his farewells to the hosts and got into the car.

"There is no need to apologize, Rory.  This was out of everyone's control.  I think it turned about quite lovely," Emily assured her as she hugged Rory.  Then she followed Richard into the car.

As they drove away, Mitchum and Shira approached Rory and Logan. "It was certainly memorable," Shira agreed.  She hugged both Rory and Logan.

"An excellent time," Mitchum said leading Shira to their car.

Francine said, "It all worked out."  She hugged Rory and then turned to Lorelai. She said, "You have a beautiful inn.  What could have been a disaster turned into a wonderful event.  We will be in touch about the Christmas party soon."

After the last car pulled out, Lorelai, Rory, and Logan stumbled back inside.  They collapsed on the couches.  Lorelai looked around and said, "I suppose I should get started on cleaning up all this.  I have the boys coming in later though. Maybe I'll just rest for a few minutes."

"Luke!  What the hell happened in here?"  Sookie's voice rang out from the kitchen.  Lorelai sat up straight to listen while Rory and Logan reflexively leaned forward.  They could hear some banging around from the kitchen.

"I cooked!  There were a bunch of people here, remember?  You left your precise, kitchen-dictator directions and I cooked!"  Luke fired back.

"Where are all the blueberries?  I KNOW how many were in here, Luke!  You used more than a cup and a half, didn't you?"  Sookie accused.

"I have no idea!  I didn't measure!" Luke said.

"You didn't measure?"  Sookie yelled sounding truly appalled.  "You didn't measure?  Looks like my dictator directions were useless!  I have standards here, Luke!  This is MY kitchen!"

"You are crazy!  They gobbled up my blueberry-ladden pancakes like they were going out of style!"  Luke's voice said.  "And I didn't use all the bananas in the muffins.  It makes them too strong.  Everyone seemed to like a little strawberry mixed in too!"

"You added strawberry?  Luke!"  Sookie yelled.  Rory, Logan, and Lorelai tried to look casual as Luke came storming out of the kitchen with Sookie hot on his tail. "Luke!  I am talking to you!"

"I'm not listening!  I am leaving.  I have my own kitchen and diner to see to.  You are very welcome for jumping right in to save your party!"  Luke said pulling on his battered old green coat.

"Saved it?  We are just lucky no one got food poisoning!  My kitchen is a mess!  And you used the wrong things!"  Sookie continued.

"Goodbye Sookie,"  Luke growled.  He turned to Lorelai, "I'm leaving, going back to my kitchen."

Lorelai called after him, "Thanks for all your help!  I'll see you at home later!"

Sookie stormed back to her kitchen.  Lorelai sighed and figured she should follow her.  She said, "That was a nice little rest.  I'll go calm Sookie down."

"Wow, Sookie seemed pretty mad," Logan commented when they were alone.

"Happens every time she and Luke share a kitchen.  They'll be fine, always are," Rory said.

Logan leaned back on the couch he shared with Rory.  He grabbed her hand and held it tightly.  His head rolled to face her.  He said, "Well, I'd say we had two pretty successful weddings.  And now we still have a party to look forward to!"

"I am not so sure about successful, but it was perfect,"  Rory said grinning at him.

Logan took his hand back and dug in his pocket.  He pulled out a small, long rectangular box.  He said, "I know we said we weren't going to do wedding gifts to each other, that we were going to concentrate on the house instead.  But I couldn't resist."  He handed her the box. "I'm so happy you chose to marry me again, Ace."  He grinned again and said, "And we both remember this one.  I didn't drink anything until we were playing poker.  I don't think you drank anything, did you?  Unless you were knocking them back upstairs with the girls..."

Rory laughed and said, "No, I wanted to remember every detail of this wedding."  She looked at the box in her hand and said, "Logan, you didn't have to get me anything!  We agreed, remember?"

"I know, but it just reminded me of you.  Open it," he instructed.

Rory slowly untied the bow that closed the box.  Then she lifted the lid.  Inside was a sparkling blue sapphire and diamond bracelet.  It perfectly matched her ring.  She gasped and said, "Oh my God!  Logan, it's beautiful.  It's incredible."

He lifted the bracelet out of the box and clasped it on her wrist.  She held up her arm and turned her wrist side to side watching the stones glimmer in the light.  She turned to Logan and said, "I love it!"  She kissed him and held his face in her hands.  "I broke the rule too.  I have something for you upstairs."

"Sneak.  I knew you would go against what we agreed,"  Logan laughed.

Rory stood up and grabbed his hand.  She led him up the stairs to their room.  Once inside, she led him to the edge of the bed and gently nudged him so that he sat.

Once he was seated, she went to her dresser and pulled out a white, rectangular box similar to the one Logan had given her downstairs.  She walked slowly over to where he sat. She had a small smile on her face as she handed him the box.

Logan smiled and said, "Do I get a bracelet too?"  The smile on his face slowly receded as he opened the box.  He stared into it for a moment.  Then he looked up at her with wide eyes.
