Part 48

Everyone froze for a full ten minutes waiting for the lights to flicker back on.  No one spoke.  Everyone assumed the lights would eventually flicker back on.  But this time the darkness did not subside.  The electricity stayed off.

"I guess I should start the generator,"  Luke's voice broke through the silence.

"Yes, Luke, please.  We are going to need some electricity here,"  Lorelai said urgently.  She and Luke exchanged a knowing glance.

"I'll give you a hand," Logan's voice pierced the darkness from across the room.

As their eyes adjusted to the lack of light, Lorelai looked around the room.  In the soft glow of the fire and candles, she could see the remaining guests of the wedding celebration standing still in their places around the room.  To her left, she saw her parents with the Huntzbergers, Christopher, and Francine.  To her right, she saw Rory and her group of friends.

Suddenly, right in front of her, there were glowing fangs.  Lorelai jumped back and exclaimed, "What the...?"

She then heard muffled giggling.  Finn said with a truly horrible Australian-Dracula accent, "Relax Love, I just vant to suck your blood!"

"Finn!  Where on Earth did you get glow-in-the-dark fangs?"  Rory demanded.

"When we were in the attic last night helping Lorelai pull out all the extra lights and decorations, I just happened to stumble into some Halloween decorations.  I thought these might come in handy," he said grinning at Rosemary. "We can play later, my love," he said chomping his teeth making the neon fangs dance around in the darkness.

"Finn!  Those were from Davy's Halloween party we had here at the inn.  Sookie asked me just to box everything for next year.  I didn't clean anything, just threw it all in that box.  Those were probably in some kid's mouth!"  Lorelai said disgusted.

"Well, that explains the lingering taste of peanut butter and strawberry jelly,"  Finn said spitting them out. "Hmmm, I was hoping they were flavored fangs."

"Ugh, stay away from me Dracula," Rosemary said.

"Pick up your teeth and help me start the generator," Luke grumbled as he led Logan and Finn out back behind the inn.

"Well, this has certainly been a memorable affair," Francine commented.

"Yes and it's only 8 o'clock!"  Emily said.  "We should just now be finishing the dinner we planned at the club, not standing around The Dragonfly in the dark with an Australian Dracula!"

"It is a shame we can't see the first dance and hear the speeches and all the other traditional wedding things,"  Shira chimed in. "We kind of persuaded the kids to do this second wedding.  Now can't even see what we asked for!"

"Who says we can't?  We managed to pull together a ceremony.  This is the reception,"  Lorelai said.  "I actually happen to have the first dance right here."  Lorelai pulled out her phone and began arranging speakers.  "I just need some electricity to make this work."

Everyone stood around and waited.  They could hear some banging outside.  There was a cough of an engine starting, then a sputter.  Then there was silence again.  The silence was broken by a curse from Luke.  They couldn't make out what Finn said, but heard his laugh.

Then there was more banging, more coughing, some sputtering, and finally an engine was running.  Minutes later, they could hear the hum of the refrigerator coming to life.  The furnace kicked on and they felt the rush of warm air invade the room.  A few lights flickered to life.  The room was not fully lit, but it was no longer pitch dark.

"Ah, there we go!"  Lorelai said.  Then she muttered her own curse. "Figures, this outlet isn't on our emergency circuit.  Ok, I just need a few more minutes while I find power."  She went around the room plugging in speakers and testing outlets until she found the few outlets that were powered.

By this time, Logan, Finn, and Luke had returned.  The snow had covered them in the short time they had been outside.  They huddled in front of the fire to warm themselves.

"What's going on in here?  Lorelai?  Why are you under the table?"  Luke asked.

"She is playing with those speakers and insisting we can have the reception,"  Richard said.

"As usual, she has some mystery plan and won't tell the rest of us about it," Emily complained.

"Mom?  What are you doing?  We don't need music,"  Rory said.

"Almost got it,"  Lorelai's muffled voice said.  She crawled out from under the table and said, "Ok!  Well, the newlywed couple is supposed to have a first dance, right?  I know Lane and the band were supposed to play for you, but, well, things didn't really work out that way.  I have a pretty good substitute here."

Lorelai set up her phone on the small table next to the speaker.  She tapped the screen a few times.  The speakers crackled a bit.  Lorelai paused whatever it was and said, "Ok, so I spoke to Lane and the guys last night before they left.  We had no idea what this storm would bring or if they would be able to get back today at all.  I had already decided we would be having some sort of party with the people staying here.  This was supposed to be your wedding weekend.  We had to do something.  So I asked Lane to make a little recording for me.  She and the guys did and  sent it to me late last night."

Lorelai started the recording and everyone heard Lane's voice, "Hi Rory.  Hi Logan.  So, you chose me as Maid of Honor and, unfortunately, I am failing at my job.  We were supposed to play a special song for you.  This storm really kind of messed up some plans.  But I wanted to tell you guys how happy I am for you.  I am so happy my best friend got her second chance to make her dreams come true.  No matter where she goes professionally, her dreams always revolved around you, Logan.  Together you two will do amazing things.  I love you both."  There was a little more crackling, then everyone in the room heard a few chords of a song on a guitar.  Lane's voice came back on, "So, we made it through that storm to get home.  I have no idea if your wedding will go on tomorrow or not.  I am going to send this to Lorelai when we are done.  I am sure she will play it at just the right moment. Congratulations guys!"

Rory smiled her her mother.  Lorelai looked back and winked.  Lane's voice came on once more, "It's not the usual version.  We are going Hep Alien Unplugged tonight!"  Then they heard, "Ready guys?"  Three sharp taps of her drumsticks followed.  Then Hep Alien launched into an acoustic version of "Without You" dedicated to Rory and Logan.

Logan immediately left his warm spot by the fire and walked to Rory.  He took her hand and led her to the middle of the floor. He spun her around once, then held her tightly in his arms.  Hep Alien serenaded them via cell phone recording for their first dance as a married couple.

Although it wasn't exactly how Emily, Francine, and Shira had imagined watching the first dance, even they had to admit that they acoustic version in very dim lights had a romantic effect.  Christopher was recording the whole thing on his own cell phone so there would be some documentation of the dance.  After the second chorus, the others in the room paired up and danced along with Rory and Logan.  The acoustic rendition was much longer than the studio recorded track.  Couples swayed in each others arms for a while.

As Logan held her, Rory looked up at Logan.  She smiled and said, "We didn't get stuck with a stuffy wedding."

Logan laughed.  He said, "No, we sure didn't." Logan bent his head and kissed Rory.  As he held her against him, he considered sneaking her upstairs.  He felt pretty confident they could disappear for a little while without anyone really noticing.

Before he could follow through on the plan formulating in his mind, the song had ended.  Finn was standing near the fireplace tapping a glass.  "Ladies and gentlemen, as the best man,  I would like a few minutes to say a few words about the couple we are all stranded in a blizzard to celebrate."  Finn took a sip of the scotch he was holding and mused,  "It is fitting that they managed to pick the one weekend that a freak early snow storm would also choose. These two are like a storm of their own.  They began their relationship like two powerful fronts colliding.  And the storm hasn't subsided since.  The rest of us tend to get swept away along with them."  Finn smiled and looked at the couple.  He continued, "Rory here brings out the best in our Logan.  She has changed him, made him a better man.  She has made us all better men."  He smiled at Rory and said directly to her, "I mention all of us because, I am sure you know by now, you are stuck with us all!  You didn't just marry Huntz here!"  There were chuckles and head shakes at his comment.  "But, I know I couldn't have picked a better addition to our little circle or for Logan."  He held up his glass and finished his little speech, "Long live the happy couple!  Congratulations!"

Logan walked over and shook Finn's hand and patted his back in a half man-hug.  Rory hugged him and kissed his cheek.  Lorelai switched to a music app and kept the tunes flowing through the dining room.  She selected a mix of music to appeal to everyone.  Soon the drinks were being poured and shoes were kicked off to dance. Finn would not relent until every single person in attendance did the "YMCA".  Colin quickly took pictures of Mitchum and Richard with theirs arms forming the "M" and "C" of the song.  To everyone's surprise, Richard knew all the lyrics and sang along as well.  However, when Finn tried to get the crowd to do the Electric Slide, the older guests refused and retired to the den to chat with their cocktails.

Hours later, after going outside to collect more firewood, Luke came back in to announce the snow had finally ended.  His announcement was met with cheers and more shots being poured.  Logan grabbed Rory's hand and pulled her towards the stairs while the LDB gang guzzled more shots and set up a poker game.

"Come on, they won't miss us for a while..."Logan said.

"Logan!  We can't just sneak upstairs with our parents and friends down here!"  Rory said.

"We're just getting changed out of these clothes.  Aren't you uncomfortable?  Come on,"  He pleaded.  Then he winked and said, "Let's go get 'changed'."

Rory laughed, "Fine.  But we better 'change' quick!"

"Not going to be a problem at all.  I am half 'changed' already!" Logan growled.  He nipped at the side of her neck as they stumbled up the dark stairs.  He said, "I have wanted you since you walked down the stairs towards me."

Rory sighed and pulled him against her at the door to their bedroom.  She kissed him hungrily as he fumbled for the knob.  He managed to get it open while Rory clung to him.  He gathered her up and carried her in traditional style over the threshold as she giggled.

All giggles stopped as they looked around the room.  Their friends had apparently sneaked in and decorated the room for them.  There were battery powered candles on every surface.  They had pilfered the centerpiece mirrors from the dining room, so the candles appeared to glow in a pool.  Somehow they had even found rose petals to scatter around the bed.

Rory gasped and smiled at the romantic sight.  Logan tightened his arm around her.  He went to close the door, but then he suddenly burst out laughing.

Rory looked at him curiously.  When Logan had turned to close the door behind them, he noticed what was obviously Finn's contribution to the decor.

On the back of the door was a full size glow in the dark skeleton.  Finn had cut out a sparkly red heart and attached it to the skeleton's exposed rib cage.   He had posed the skeleton so it appeared to be holding his heart.

"Mom never should have let him near Halloween decorations,"  Rory laughed shaking her head.  "If I find any of those fake black spiders anywhere in this room, he is a dead man."

"I'll kill him myself with my bare hands for you," Logan said pulling Rory close again. "Forget Finn,"  he said wrapping his arms around her and nuzzling her neck.  "We have some changing to do  before they come looking for us."
