Part 46

For the next few hours, everyone ate and drank and listened to Hep Alien.  They were all shocked when the door banged open and what looked like the Abominable Snowman stood in the doorway.  No one moved as the figure covered in snow stomped off and began peeling off layers.

"Dad?"  Rory asked heading towards the wintery creature.

"Hey kid, it is really coming down out there!  I barely made the last few miles.  Everything is covered and the plows just can't keep up,"  Christopher reported.

"Maury!  Maury!  Where are you?  We need to get home!  We can't get stranded here and leave the kitties alone in this!"  Babette yelled.

"Ok, Babs, yeah, we should go,"  Maury said pulling on his coat as he shuffled Babette and Patty towards the door. Babette yelled over her shoulder to Lorelai that she would stop over and take good care of Paul Anka.

All the other party goers decided they should venture home while they still could.  Lorelai sent Michel, Sookie, and all the other employees home to their families as well. Lane and Zack hurried home to their kids. Kirk offered to stay and keep replenishing the firewood supply, but Lorelai insisted he go home too.  She reminded him his mother would be worried and that Lulu shouldn't walk home alone.

Soon, the only people at the Dragonfly were the guests staying there. Luke and Lorelai had originally planned to go back to their house for the night, but since there was no longer any staff at the inn, they decided to stay as well.  It was unspoken between the two of them that they would be running the inn that night.  Lorelai was very glad she had closed the inn to the public.  There were just enough rooms for everyone.

After seeing all the townspeople out, Lorelai secured all the doors and double checked the shutter latchings and any outdoor furniture.  Nor'easters were notorious for strong winds.  She didn't want things blowing around overnight.  She just hoped the power stayed on.  There was a back up generator, but it really only was capable of fueling the necessities like the furnace, water heater, freezers, and  a few lights.  Lorelai worried this was about to turn into a very memorable event.  She sighed.  Normally she loved snow storms, but she had too many responsibilities to enjoy this one.  She had been so busy preparing that she didn't even smell this one coming!

As she made her way back into the parlor, she noted the two distinct groups.  The older members of the party were sitting in front of the television with worried expressions concentrating on the newest weather updates.  The younger members were in the dining room knocking back shots and laughing loudly with no concern to the storm raging outside. They were warm, dry, together, and blissfully buzzed.  Life was good for them.

Lorelai searched for Luke.  He seemed to have disappeared.  She heard the clang of pots in the kitchen and pushed her way through the door.  Luke was organizing different bins Sookie had crammed in the walk in freezer.  He looked up and saw Lorelai and said, "Before Sookie left, she walked me through what I should serve for breakfast.  I am just seeing what's in here.  She thinks she should be able to make it back here sometime tomorrow afternoon if the storm lets up.  Guess I am head chef until then."

"Oh Luke, you don't have to do that,"  Lorelai said not meaning it one bit.

"Really?  What do you suppose people should eat?  Should we get Emily in here?  Think she can scramble an egg?"  Luke asked.

"I am fairly sure she has never cracked a single egg in her life,"  Lorelai said. "Maids scrambling when she enters a room is the only association she has to that word."

"So that was another time you were just saying I didn't have to do something in an attempt to be nice.  You know full well I will take over the kitchen and everyone will eat well.  I have no choice in these matters.  I can act like I won't do it, but I will. You can say I don't have to, but I do. I will follow Sookie's ridiculous instructions and add only one and half cups of blueberries to the pancakes.  That's right, not two cups, not one cup, exactly one and a half.  And I won't complain.  Well, I will, but no one will listen..." Luke rambled.

Lorelai stopped him with a kiss.  She wrapped her arms around his waist and said, "You know you're my Kitchen Superman."  She lightly pecked his lips and purred, "You put on your hat backwards and swoop in to save the day.  It's kind of hot in a Food Network sort of way.  Now if we could just get you into some tights..." Lorelai said.

Luke interrupted with a laugh, "Got them upstairs in our room.  We'll play chef and desperate diner patron later."  He noticed her concerned look and tried to relax her.  "What's wrong?"

"I just watched a little of the weather. That map is covered by what appears to be a huge white blob.  This is a big storm.  I don't know what we are going to do.  There is no way we can have the wedding at the land tomorrow,"  Lorelai said. "The officiant isn't even going to be able to get here.  And the Reverend is out of town this weekend!  I feel like Santa in the Rudolph movie being forced to cancel Christmas due to weather!  Except it's worse than Christmas.  It's my daughter's wedding!"

Luke looked thoughtful for a moment.  He sighed and said, "You know, we could just have the wedding here.  I mean the kids already have their clothes here.  I have the food covered.  All the important guests that they are doing this second, fake wedding for are here.  And aside from the Reverend, there is someone else ordained in town, someone that could marry them..."

Lorelai's eyes got huge.  She laughed uncontrollably.  When she finally gathered herself, she said, "Desperate times call for desperate measures.  I'll call Kirk and ask him if he could do it here tomorrow.  He wanted firewood detail, but I have a feeling he will jump at this.  Wonder what he charges?"

Luke and Lorelai checked on the rowdy group of friends one more time before sitting with the older crowd for a while.  Lorelai sank into one of the small couches next to Luke and asked, "So what the weather supposed to be like tomorrow?"

Emily looked at her in disbelief.  She said, "Lorelai, look outside!  This storm is not going to let up until tomorrow afternoon!"

"There is no way the kids can get married outside," Francine said.  "There is no way we can make it to the club!"

"It does appear we are stranded here for the foreseeable future," Richard said.  Suddenly concerned, he looked at Lorelai and asked, "Do you have enough supplies for the amount of people staying here?"

"Gee, Dad, I knew I forgot something!  I guess I should have ordered more food! I don't routinely have an inn full of guests or anything,"  Lorelai said sarcastically.  "Yes, Dad, we are fully stocked.  We would all be fine here for a week."

"There's no need for that, Lorelai.  I didn't know how much you normally stocked or when your new deliveries came in,"  Richard said logically.

"Hopefully, it will only be a day or two before the roads are clear enough to venture out," Mitchum said.

"Yes, but all the plans and preparations are wasted!  Obviously the wedding and reception are cancelled!  We will have to do it all again!"  Emily said in despair.

Christopher shrugged, "Out of our control, nothing we can do."

"Not necessarily," Lorelai began.  She immediately had the group's attention.  She said, "What if we could have a wedding here, right here at the inn.  You all just wanted to see Rory and Logan get married, right?  And it was going to be a small ceremony anyway.  Why don't we just do it here?"

"Here?  But how?"  Francine asked.

"I have some plans and know some people.  We can make it happen,"  Lorelai said confidently.

The next morning, Rory and Logan were woken up to the sound of banging on their door.  They heard Lorelai's voice ring out, "Rise and shine!  It's your wedding day!"

"This feels like awful deju vu.  Why is she always banging on our door and waking us up?"  Logan complained.

The banging continued.  They heard Lorelai's voice again, "Come on! Are you decent? Can I come in?"

Rory sat up and held her slightly throbbing head.  The truth or dare charades drinking game Finn had invented seemed like a very bad idea that morning.  She called to her mother, "We are decent.  Come on in."

The door opened and Lorelai peeked her head in.  She glanced around before entering.  Laughing, she said, "Just wanted to check before I brought in the troops."  As Lorelai entered, she was followed by Emily, Francine, Rosemary, Steph, Juliet, and Honor.  All the women carried garment bags and totes of makeup.  Lorelai directed them towards the bathroom and small dressing table.  She looked at Logan, "The menfolk are waiting for you down the hall.  Unless you know how to do hair or the makeup for those really sexy smoky eyes, you are not needed here."

Logan glanced at all the women staring at him.  He quickly grabbed a shirt and headed for the door.  He said, "Ok, I guess I will get out of your way then.  If you need me..."

He was cut off by Emily closing the door in his face.  She smiled at Rory, "It's your wedding day, dear.  We have already done things a bit nontraditional in the fact that we had to roust him from your bed.  But, we will forget that detail.  Now, let's get you ready!" Emily headed directly into the adjoining bathroom to run a bath.

"Wait, what?"  Rory asked confused.  "Did it stop snowing overnight?"

"Oh no, it's still really coming down!  There must be two feet out there!"  Shira said.

"Yes, they underestimated this storm terribly,"  Francine confirmed.

"Ok, then how are we going to get to the land?"  Rory asked exasperated perplexed at this cheerful crowd in her room.

"We aren't going anywhere!" Steph chimed in.

"Wait until you see what your mother and grandmothers did last night!"  Rosemary said.

Rory turned to her mother, "What did you do?"

"Well, we already had the Christmas decorations up, as you saw.  The roping around the doors and on the stairs looked great.  And all the arrangements Michel constantly badgers me to have in here finally seem like a good idea.  We just added a little to them,"  Lorelai said winking.

"But, no time for that now!  Come on, we have to get you beautiful, Bride Woman!"  Juliet said pulling her out of bed.

Two hours later, Rory was bathed, styled, made up, and dressed.  Since there was no professional makeup artist or hair stylist.  The girls had all done their own hair and makeup while Rory was in the bath.  As soon as she emerged, the girls pounced on her.  Together, they wound her hair half up on her head with curling tendrils falling loosely around her face.  They did her makeup in an amplified natural style.  Her Grandmothers had adorned her with various jewels.  Rory had diamonds and sapphires in her ears, hair, and around her neck.  The jewels sparkled and perfectly highlighted the blue accents on her dress.

Christopher knocked on the door as the girls were putting the final touches on Rory's makeup.  He walked into the room and stopped in his tracks.  His eyes filled with tears as he looked at Rory.  "My God, you look gorgeous,"  his voice hitched.  "I was thinking this was a fake wedding.  Sorry, Mom," he said glancing at Francine. "But, I didn't know seeing you like this would effect me like this," he stammered.

"Dad, stop!  They will kill me if I ruin this masterpiece of makeup with tears,"  Rory said choking up.

Christopher stepped forward and hugged her gently as not to mess up her hair or dress.  "We'll both hold it together then, kid."  He smiled at her and said, "You have quite the crowd waiting for you.  You ready?"

"Quite the crowd?  Who on Earth managed to get here?" she asked as Lane walked into the room in her amazing maid of honor dress.

"Lane!  You got here!"  Rory hugged her excitedly.  "Who else made it?"

"Looks like most of the town.  The strange, skinny guy and the mean lady mechanic were shuttling people in her plow truck for the past hour and half,"  Christopher explained.

Rory looked questioningly at Lorelai, "Yep, that was me.  More surprises to come."  She winked at Rory.

Emily interrupted before Rory could question her further.  "Ok, we have no party planner or director, so Francine and I will direct."  Emily waited for everyone to pay attention to her.  She said, "So, Francine, Shira, and I go first.  Richard, Mitchum, and Luke, who is standing in for Strobe, will be waiting at the bottom of the stairs to escort us to our seats.  Lorelai, you go next.  Luke will be circling around to escort you as well.  Honor, Rosemary, Steph, and Juliet, you all go next.  Your respective escorts will be waiting for you. Finn will take you to your seat, Rosemary.  Then he will head up to the alter to stand in as best man.  Lane, as maid of honor, you go right before Rory.  Your Zack will escort you to the alter, then he will take a seat."  Emily paused and looked at the group.  "Does everyone understand  so far?"

At the chorus of nods and 'mmm hmms', Francine said, "Once everyone is in place, the music will change to the traditional Bridal March.  We have been assured someone named Maury can handle this responsibility.  When you hear the change of music, Christopher will escort you to the alter, Rory."

"Alright, alright, I think we can all handle this.  The guys and guests are waiting!"  Lorelai hurried the speeches along.

"Lorelai, we want this to be perfect," Emily said.  "And you are certain your friend Sookie knows how to work that camera?  And her husband will video the whole thing?"

"Yes, yes,  they have kids,"  Lorelai said.

"What does having children have to do with filming and documenting a wedding?"  Emily demanded.

"You should see the things they catch on camera.  They got both kids picking their noses at the same time.  And they got Davy in mid-fall off the slide at the park!"  Lorelai said.

"Oh, well, I didn't know about the nose picking," Emily said snarkily.  "I do hope she gets Rory adjusting her bra.  That would look wonderful on my mantle."

"And with that lovely image, I think it's showtime!  I hear music playing,"  Rory said.

"Oh!  Yes, they must be ready!  Ok, Emily, Shira, are you two ready?"  Francine asked as they assembled to exit the room.

"Looks like I am up!  Good luck, kid.  You look great.  Love you," Lorelai said giving Rory as quick hug before walking out.

"Us next!"  Steph said as she, Honor, Rosemary, and Juliet lined up.  They slowly departed one after another.

"And then there were three,"  Lane laughed.  "Guess I'm up."  Lane smiled and made her way out.

"Dad," Rory said as they began to walk. "Don't let me fall."

Christopher laughed, "Never.  Come on, let's get you married, again."

Rory and Christopher left the bedroom and made their way to the top of the stairs.  Rory looked down and couldn't believe it.  The stairway and entire reception area were twinkling with white lights.  Somehow, Lorelai had gotten even more garland and had it draped everywhere.  Bright red poinsettias were balanced on every available surface.  Lush evergreens and holly spilled out of urns and vases. Candles were aglow everywhere.

As they reached the bottom of the stairs, they could see chairs set up in the main sitting room.  It looked like Gypsy and Kirk had brought the entire town to witness their wedding.  Everyone smiled at Rory and sighed at how beautiful she looked.

In front of the fireplace, Rory saw the arbor Luke had made her mother. Somehow they got it to the inn and set up inside.  It was covered in pine roping and white lights.  Large red bows were attached to the front corners.  Large red poinsettias sat at the legs.  Logan stood there in his tuxedo next to Finn.  Across from them, on the other side of the arbor was Lane.

Rory nearly stumbled when she saw who was under the arbor waiting to officiate her wedding.  Standing under the arbor in a VFW uniform was Kirk.  The gold belt buckle of the uniform glinted in the twinkle lights.  The fake red poppy stood out as bright as the poinsettias.  The starched hat sat perched on his head slightly askew from bumping into the arbor. Rory could see pine needles in his hair.  It appeared he had been waiting by the fire a while.  A sheen of sweat was evident on his red face from across the room.

"What the..." Rory whispered.

"Apparently he is ordained.  And his father's old uniform was the best formal wear he could find,"  Christopher whispered back trying not to laugh.

Struggling not to laugh herself, Rory simply nodded and walked the last few steps to Logan.
