Part 40

"Wow,"  Logan said shaking his head, "That is a lot to digest."

They were in the back of the chauffeured car on their way to Stars Hollow after a surprisingly pleasant holiday dinner at the Huntzberger house.  "I am assuming you are not referring to food,"  Rory said.

"I am completely stuffed, but, no I was not talking about digesting food,"  Logan said.

"Didn't think so,"  Rory said with a smile.  "This was an interesting holiday."

"Interesting doesn't begin to describe it!" Logan laughed.  "My parents acted like they liked each other!  Did you see that? They joked and smiled at each other.  Dad touched Mom several times.  And she didn't say one word about clothes getting wrinkled or smudges.  AND, while we are discussing clothes-- that sweater thing! It had a pilgrim woman on it.  What the hell was she wearing?"

"It was her festive shirt.  It has been in her closet for years,"  Rory said repeating what Shira explained.

"Her closet must have a false back or a trap door or something.  There is no way all the designers she has had in over the years would have left that thing!"  Logan laughed.  Then he looked at Rory with more amazement, "And Dad!  He practically begged me to take these two meetings so he doesn't have to step foot in California.  The long-time mistress I just learned about is gone?  What happened with my parents?"

"I have no idea, but it was sort of cute,"  Rory said with a smile.  She thought for a moment and said, "It's kind of funny if you think about it.  I always wished my parents would get back together as a kid, you know, be together.  We would be a family, me with my biological parents.  Meanwhile, you had the picture of a family.  Your parents were together, but not really.  You must have wished at some point that your parents were really together, like sitcom, fairy tale together, right?"

"Yeah, I wondered a time or two what it would be like to have tv parents that were actually in love with each other.  But it just wasn't the normal for me.  I got used to my parents living separate lives and not really liking each other.  They didn't really seem to like me and Honor either,"  Logan said.  He sat back and considered.  "Yeah, I guess in our own ways, we were wishing for the same thing--parents that loved each other and us."

"Strange, isn't it?  Mom has Luke now, so I haven't thought about my parents that way in a long time.  But I got that family feel.  Now your parents seem very much together.  I hope they stay that way.  It sure makes things easier on me when your mom is happy!"  Rory said laughing.

"It's definitely strange, but it is kind of nice.  I hope they stay this way too,"  Logan said.

"And what about the Gilmore Thanksgiving?  We are getting married on our land with outside heaters!  That is not an Emily Gilmore idea!" Rory exclaimed.

"Yeah, that was pretty shocking too.  I thought for sure they would have us in a long, formal church ceremony followed by a stuffy, boring reception.  It sounds like it may be fun.  I really do love the idea of getting married where we will be building our house and our life,"  Logan said.  He took Rory's hand and said, "Well, our first official Thanksgiving together was definitely one to remember."

She linked her fingers through his and said, "It sure was. Makes me nervous, yet excited for Christmas!"

Back at the Huntzberger mansion:

"Oh, just leave it, let the girl get it in the morning," Mitchum said as he watched his wife gather glasses from various tables in the living room.  "I still can't believe you let the entire staff go right after dinner."

"They have families.  I am sure they were eager to get home and celebrate the holiday with their loved ones," Shira said moving a glass to the serving tray.  "I remember years ago working holidays in that bar.  It's no fun waiting on other people celebrating a holiday."

"I remember you working in that bar too," Mitchum said wrapping his arms around her as she leaned over to grab a stray fork on the coffee table.  "You got everyone's attention bending over tables just like this," he said suggestively in her ear as he ran a hand down her backside.

"Mitchie!" she giggled.  "I was so young!  I had just run away from home.  I had only been working at that place a few months when you started coming in," she said as she straightened and turned to face him.

"I had to keep coming back.  You were like no one I had ever met... so young, so beautiful, so determined to make something of yourself," he said brushing her hair back behind her ear.  Then he said, "You shot me down several times before I convinced you to go out with me."

"You scared the crap out of me!  You were so smooth and sophisticated.  I just knew you were someone important from an important family.  I felt so out of my league with you, like a country bumpkin in the big city,"  Shira said slightly embarrassed.

Linking his arms around her waist, he said, "I know.  It was so refreshing that you didn't know who I was.  You weren't afraid to say anything to me. And, wow, did you let me have it a few times!  I believe you called me an incorrigible spoiled miscreant!"  He kissed her and said, "I think I fell in love with you on our first date when you nearly knocked the table over as the waiter pushed in your chair for you."

"Oh God!  Do you have to bring that up?" Shira said turning pink.

"It was adorable.  I knew you were embarrassed and didn't know the etiquette of a fancy restaurant.   But the way you played it off and made a joke about trying to see the candle closer hooked me.  You were just so fresh and fun.  I knew I wanted to marry you then,"  Mitchum said.

"Your family sure wasn't pleased when you brought me home,"  Shira said.

"Oh no, Old Elias pretty much forbid me to have anything to do with you.  But I didn't care about your breeding or social status,"  Mitchum said running his hands up her back. "Made you my wife despite his objections, didn't I?"

Shira sighed and said, "I made it my goal to be the society wife you deserved, to prove everyone wrong.  I just wanted so desperately to fit into your world."  She looked at him and said, "I guess I did.  I became a proper society wife.  But I almost lost you in the process.  Funny, isn't it?  After all those years, I gained your father's approval, but lost yours."

Mitchum kissed her softly again, "You didn't lose me.  We just took a little detour.  Look at what we had tonight.  Both of our kids were here with their spouses.  Our grandson was here.  We have it all, Shira.  We just have to make a point of not losing it again."

"Tonight was amazing.  I think the kids all had a good time, don't you?"  Shira asked.

"I think the kids were pretty shocked,"  Mitchum said laughing as he recalled the evening.

"What do you mean?" Shira asked.

"Well, there was the obvious looks at your choice of attire this evening,"  Mitchum said holding her at arm's length and smiling at her cardigan.  Shira laughed and nodded in response.  Mitchum continued, "And didn't you notice the looks Honor and Logan kept shooting at each other every time I touched you or we laughed?"

"Not really.  I was really watching Rory.  I didn't want to overstep too much with our gift of paying for the house and pool.  I kept trying to gauge her reactions.  Did the kids notice a change in us?"  Shira asked.

Mitchum laughed again, "Oh yeah, their eyes were bugging out of their heads!"

Shira laughed too and said, "Well, I hope they approve!"

Mitchum pulled her back into his arms.  He ran a hand down her back to her butt and pulled her against him.  She saw his eyes cloud with desire as he looked down at her.  He said, "You are very concerned with approval."  He began walking her towards the stairs intending to take her up to their room.  "Let's see what other old outfits you still have in that closet, Sheba.  Hopefully you can find a certain waitress uniform that I can approve of..."

Shira giggled at his old nickname for her.  When they were first married, he always called her Sheba, as in the Queen of Sheba.  He told her she was just as beautiful and powerful as the legendary character that enticed King Solomon.  She grinned again at the name and realized how much she missed hearing it.  She broke free of his embrace and raced up the stairs with him following closely behind.  She said over her shoulder, "I believe I may still have that uniform.  Some things I could never let any of the designers discard, regardless of how much they wanted to.  Up for a trip down memory lane, Solomon?"

Back in the car with Logan and Rory

"Hey, wake up.  We're a couple blocks from your house,"  Logan nudged Rory.

"I wasn't asleep.  I was just zoning out thinking about tonight,"  Rory said.  "Did you notice your mom sent the staff home after dinner?  That was nice."

"I did notice.  It was strange.  She usually makes them have the place spotless before she will go to bed,"  Logan said shaking his head in disbelief.  "With as weird as they were being, maybe she'll do it herself."

"Or maybe they will have fun in an empty house!"  Rory said with an evil grin.

"Eww, yuck.  No way!  My parents don't even share a room.  They haven't since... well,  I can't even remember a time,"  Logan said making a face.  Then he wrinkled his brow and squinted an eye at Rory, "Do you think they might be sharing a room again?"

"With the foreplay we all witnessed and that sexy sweater thing she was sporting, maybe they won't even make it to a room,"  Rory said trying to keep a straight face.

Logan groaned, "Ugh, I don't wan these thoughts in my head.  My whole life she reminded me exactly how expensive that sofa is in the living room.  They might be getting it on right now on those cushions."  Logan grimaced and shook his head.

Rory laughed and hugged him as the car pulled up to the house, "Congratulations.  You sound like a normal kid who just realized his parents still have sex!"  The driver came around and opened the door for them as Logan continued to shake his head and groan.

They entered the house to find Lorelai sprawled out on the couch moaning with Luke rubbing her feet.  "Hey guys.  How was your last dinner?"  Luke asked as Lorelai just sighed dramatically.

"It was, um, interesting," Logan said.  He looked at Lorelai concerned and asked Luke, "Is she ok?"

"Oh yeah, she's fine.  She insisted on eating a full dinner with us at the diner after eating what I can only assume was a ton at the Gilmore's house.  This is just the usual.  She'll rally soon and attack the leftover pie in the frig," Luke explained.

"Oooh, you brought home pie?  What kind?"  Rory asked.

"You've got to be kidding,"  Logan said as Luke looked at him and just nodded.

Lorelai perked up and said to Rory, "I know there is at least half of his special apple pie in there, the one with the special buttery lattice stuff on top."

"I hoped so!"  Rory said heading for the kitchen.

Lorelai came to life and hopped off the couch, "Wait for me!  I hid the good ice cream in the back of the freezer.  I'll get that and you cut the pie.  Then tell me all about dinner."

"Oh, we will definitely need ice cream for the story I have to tell you!"  Rory said.

Back in the living room, Logan flopped on the couch in the spot Lorelai had vacated.  "They are machines.  I couldn't even look at food right now.  The word 'ice cream' is making me nauseous."

"And that is why I am in here,"  Luke said grabbing the remote and flipping to a Thanksgiving football game.
