Part 38
"Ok, so we just need to stop for flowers and chocolate turkeys," Lorelai said Thanksgiving morning as she, Rory, and Logan were about to leave the house.
Luke, who had stopped back at the house to grab a new shirt after a gravy spill, said, "Skip the disgusting chocolate turkeys. I made pies."
"You made us pies?" Lorelai asked.
"I made pies for you to take to the Kims, Gilmores, and Huntzbergers. Don't give them those stale, deformed chocolate things again. They don't even taste right," Luke begged. "Pies are in my truck. I'll put them in your Jeep."
"No chocolate turkeys? He is ruining tradition," Lorelai whined.
"They really are kind of gross, Mom. Maybe we should upgrade to pies this year," Rory agreed with Luke.
A short while later, Mrs. Kim was opening the door for them. Lorelai handed her a large bunch of sunflowers and lilies. Rory handed her the fresh pumpkin pie. Mrs. Kim looked at the pie with approval, "Much better than stale chocolate." Glancing at the pie, she asked, "Is this organic?" Not waiting for an answer, she motioned for them to come in and scurried off to put the flowers in water.
Rory, Logan, and Lorelai walked into a living room full of Koreans. They all already had heaping plates of mystery food in front of them. A few people recognized Rory and Lorelai. They smiled at the women and looked suspiciously at Logan. Rory quickly made introductions. There was much relief among the older Koreans when it was revealed Logan was Rory's husband.
Rory spotted Lane and Zack across the room. She and Logan went over to say hello while Lorelai spoke to Mrs. Kim's sister.
"Happy Thanksgiving!" Lane said as Rory approached.
"Gobble gobble, Aunt Rory!" Steve and Kwan said in unison.
"Hey guys! Happy Turkey Day! I think Aunt Lorelai has presents for you two since she missed your birthday. Go say hi to her. I think she left them on the porch," Rory said ruffling their hair before they ran off in search of Lorelai.
"I hope Lorelai got them that big Lego set. Mama fought me on it, said they were pointless toys and too messy. They got books and educational videos instead. They really weren't pleased," Lane said. They watched the boys go tug on Lorelai's skirt. After hugs, Lorelai pointed towards the porch and the boys took off. Lane laughed, then said, "Uh oh, speaking of Mama...she's watching. Go get some tofurkey guys. I hid bags in the bathroom cabinet and in those two big urn vases. If you can get rid of the tofurkey without her noticing, I'll dispose of it later. Good luck."
"You really weren't joking. There is tofurkey. And we really do have to pretend to eat it?" Logan said as they approached the buffet table. They began loading their plates.
"Yep. Watch Mom. She is the master. Did you just see that fake sneeze? She just got rid of a huge mouthful of the stuff," Rory laughed.
"Wow, it really looked like a sneeze. She's good!" Logan said.
"We have been practicing for years," Rory said smiling as Steve and Kwan ran box with huge boxes of Legos. Rory glanced over at Mrs. Kim. Her gaze was met with a disapproving stare. Rory forced herself to swallow a bite of tofurkey and smile at Mrs. Kim.
"Holy crap, that stuff was so gross. It was even a strange color!" Logan said as they arrived at the Gilmore house a while later. "I am so glad Luke hid the bottle of Tums in my coat pocket," he muttered to himself fumbling with the childproof lid.
"Don't worry, the food will be much better here. And don't forget to compliment my mom on the muffins. We gotta keep those bad boys coming every year," Lorelai said as she rang the bell.
"Happy Thanksgiving!" Emily said opening the door. "Welcome! Rory, you look beautiful!" she said hugging Rory. Emily turned to Logan and embraced him, "Logan, Happy Thanksgiving and welcome to the family!"
"Happy Thanksgiving, Grandma," Rory said handing her a pie. Lorelai handed her a bunch of flowers.
"Our guests have arrived?" Richard said entering the foyer. "Lorelai, Rory, Logan, Happy Thanksgiving! Come in, let's get you all a drink. We have much to celebrate this year."
"Happy Thanksgiving, Richard. Yes, it has been a good year, Sir," Logan said as Richard poured him a scotch.
Richard handed Logan his drink. He poured wine for the women. After he handed them their glasses, he said, "Cheers to family, new and old!"
"Please, sit everyone. We have a little bit before the meal is ready," Emily said motioning everyone towards the sofas. As soon as they were seated, Emily began speaking, "We are just waiting on Francine."
"Grandma Francine is coming?" Rory asked suprised.
"Yes, we thought the whole family should be together on this holiday," Richard said.
"Besides, we wanted to be together to tell you of all the wedding plans!" Emily said excitedly.
As if on cue, the doorbell rang indicating Francine's arrival. A maid showed her into the living room a moment later. Richard stood and greeted Francine. He took her hand and kissed it, "Francine, you look lovely. Happy Thanksgiving, my dear." Francine said her hellos and holiday wishes to everyone and took a seat next to Emily while Richard poured her a glass of wine.
"Francine, excellent timing. I was just telling the kids that our planning of their wedding and party have been finalized," Emily said.
Francine looked at Rory and Logan, "I think you two will be pleased. We had many options at our disposal. It is rather amazing how many venues will bump other parties when the names Hayden, Gilmore and Huntzberger are mentioned!"
"Oh my. I hope you guys didn't have to bump anyone," Rory said leery of these plans. She had a horrible feeling this was going to turn into a stuffy, boring, extravagant affair. She was suddenly very happy they had their fun, spontaneous wedding in Vegas, even if she couldn't remember parts of it.
Lorelai smiled, "Yes, because of you, the poor Dorshimers will have to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary a full year late. It would have been nice for them to celebrate their Golden Anniversary with family and friends, but I guess 50+1 is pretty special too, right? Gee, I hope they both make it. I mean, it would be a shame if in this next year one of them..."
"Lorelai..." Emily warned. Richard and Logan exchanged a smile and faint shake of the head.
"No one got bumped, dear. I know you would have had moral objections to that. I was just saying we had the option," Francine said.
"Good, I would have felt really bad for the Dorshimers," Rory said.
"Who are the Dorshimers?" Emily asked exasperated.
"Nevermind, Mom," Lorelai said trying not to laugh. Then she asked, "Ok, well, are we going to leave them in suspense over the plans?"
Emily smiled at Logan and Rory. She began, "Well, we knew you kids didn't really want a huge society wedding. We know you are already married and don't really see this as your wedding. But, as your grandparents, we feel we have the right to at least see some sort of ceremony." She nodded at Francine.
Francine put down her glass. "We decided to compromise for you. We knew you would probably object to a huge, formal church ceremony. And there wasn't really time to arrange attire for a proper wedding party. But we still wanted to do something with meaning," Francine said. "There will be a formal dinner with dancing and all the standard reception traditions at The Club, but it will be more akin to what you would like. We have invited the appropriate parties from our social circles and business connections. Of course, we invited your friends as well. So you will have your party, as you insist on calling it."
"The ceremony part is where we got creative and compromised for you. We decided on a more intimate ceremony. Rory, you told me you wanted Lane as your maid of honor. And, Logan, you had decided on Finn for your best man. They will be in attendance along with everyone in this room, plus Luke, Christopher and Gigi. For Logan's side, we have invited Shira, Mitchum, Elias, Honor and Josh. It will be up to you if you would like anyone else," Emily said.
"Oh wow, Grandma and Grandma! That sounds nice! Just a small ceremony and then basically a party?" Rory said warming to the idea. She glanced at Logan who was also smiling. He was not particularly looking forward to a huge, over the top church ceremony either.
"Francine, would you like to tell them the location?" Emily asked with a sly smile at Francine.
"Thank you, Emily, I would," Francine said. She looked at the young couple and said, "We struggled for a location. We wanted somewhere meaningful. It would also have to be suitable for photos, since I have hired the best photographer in Hartford and expect a beautiful print for my study." She paused, then continued, "Emily spoke with Lorelai and discovered Logan was interested in a plot of land outside of Stars Hollow. When we learned you two had purchased the plot, we decided that was where the ceremony should be held. It is the spot of your beginning. You are going to build a house, a life, there. You should commit to each other there as well."
"I really love that idea. It is beautiful. We can get married in front of the pond with our family present, " Logan said.
"I love it too! That is amazing, guys!" Rory hopped up to hug both of them. As she sat down, she looked worried and said, "But it is November in Connecticut. Won't it be freezing?"
"Oh, we've worked all that out, dear," Emily said. "Your mother has put on so many outdoor weddings at her inn, she knew exactly what was required. We were scoping out the location with heating and tenting experts the day you got home. They assured us with a few discreet outdoor heaters, you will never know it is November. And the carpenter will build an aisle and gazebo. There will be no worries of mud. We really think it will look beautiful by the pond, especially if we have a gazebo built. It is all planned."
"Aaah, so that was the linen-Sookie emergency?" Rory said with a laugh. She looked at her mother, "You are such a horrible liar. We knew something was up!"
Francine and Emily looked confused, but didn't say anything. Lorelai saw their looks and said, "They got home hours before I expected them. Luke came up with a lie, but couldn't tell me in time. We botched it up good. They had no idea what was up, but knew we were up to something."
"Luckily you didn't ruin the surprise, Lorelai," Richard said. "May I freshen anyone's drink?"
"I'll take a refill, Richard. All this toasting has left me empty," Logan said.
"No refills here. I think we have just enough time before dinner to try on your dress, Rory," Emily said. "Francine, Lorelai, shall we go see how the bride will look?"
The women went upstairs to the room Emily had designated as Rory's to try on her dress while Logan and Richard had their second scotch.
Emily pushed open the door to the room allowing all the women to enter. There, on the other side of the room, on a mannequin, was the dress Rory had picked out. Rory had sent her measurements to Emily who had created the dress to the specifications.
"It looks more beautiful in person than in the magazine! It is perfect! Thank you so much for having it made, Grandma!" Rory said getting excited about this wedding. Until now, it had seemed like an obligation. But now, after hearing the plans for the ceremony and seeing the gorgeous dress in person, she was looking forward to the day.
"Mom, it really is perfect! Miss Celine did a great job. It looks just like the picture," Lorelai said.
"Go put it on, Rory. We are all dying to see you in it," Francine instructed.
"Ok! Mom? Can you come help me? I don't think I can zip it myself," Rory asked her mother.
As Rory and Lorelai headed into the adjoining bathroom, Francine and Emily sat in the armchairs by the fireplace and began discussing Rory's hair and jewelry for the wedding day.
Rory stripped to her underwear and Lorelai helped her pull the dress on. When it was secured in the back, Rory stepped back to view herself in the full length mirror.
Lorelai had tears in her eyes and said, "Perfect, you are perfect." Rory nodded as she looked at herself. The dress was ivory and strapless. The bust had faintly blue pearls sewn into the fabric in a floral pattern. The pattern continued down one side to the waist where it met with a sheer, pale blue sash. The sash wrapped around Rory's waist and tied in a knot on her hip. The tails hung down the skirt of the dress. The skirt was flowing, but not poofy. The dress was simply perfect.
Lorelai had her hand on the doorknob and looked questioningly at Rory. Rory nodded. Lorelai opened the door and Rory walked out to a chorus of gasps and sighs from Emily and Francine.
"Rory, you look stunning, darling," Francine said. "Excellent work, Emily."
"Thank you, Francine. Rory, you are a vision. You will be the most beautiful bride," Emily said.
"Thank you both. It is perfect. I love it," Rory said. Then she laughed, "I am just glad I tried it on now rather than after this dinner!"
