Part 28

Rory spent the next few days writing and revising her article on Zack while Logan went to work.  He was working hard to get ahead so that he could join her in Los Angeles for the next few concerts.  So, Rory was trying to get ahead in her work as well.  The article on Brian was received very well.  All the online and television gossip celebrity shows had been featuring her article and summarizing it for her viewers.  Rory was amazed that after two articles on Hep Alien, her name was more well known than when she followed Obama's campaign.  She had already heard from Mark from Rolling Stone twice.  He edited Gil's article and was thrilled with it.  Gil's segment would be released in just a few weeks.  Mark was eager to get his hands on Rory's article on Zack now.  He also requested another meeting with her when she returned to the east coast.

Rory had the article finished and was reviewing the photos that would accompany it.  She had the photographer email her the photos he took of Zack and his family.  He had gotten some great shots of Zack with Lane, Zack with the boys, and even a couple nice pictures of Zack with Mrs. Kim.  The editing and layout team at Rolling Stone would determine the exact placement, but Rory wanted to have a look at them before she handed it all over to Mark.

After Rory finished with Zack's article and photos, she carefully saved her work and closed her computer.  She opened a small notebook and jotted down ideas of what to discuss with Lane when she interviewed her.  Rory knew Lane would be the easiest, yet the most difficult for her to interview.  She knew she would have to be objective and unbiased when reporting on her best friend.  Rory tried to think of what the readers would want to know about Lane.  Rory wrote the word "dad" in her notebook and circled it.  It would be up to Lane, but readers would be very interested to know where Mr. Kim was all these years.  Mrs. Kim was a prominent figure associated with Hep Alien.  Everyone knew who she was and either loved or feared the woman.  Rory had considered proposing an interview with Mrs. Kim at one point, but dismissed it.  Now she reconsidered the idea and decided to suggest it to Mark next time she saw him.  But, Mr. Kim was a mystery to anyone outside the small intimate circle.  Rory made a note to see how Lane felt about talking about her father.  The rest of the band had been very open about their childhoods and parents, but Rory really wasn't sure how Lane would feel airing her private family details.

Feeling prepared, Rory went into the bedroom she shared with Logan and began packing her things for their trip to Los Angeles.  She decided to pack up Logan's things too since they were planning to leave when he got home from work.  Logan had already arranged to have his plane waiting at the private airstrip, so Rory wanted to be ready when he arrived home.

A few hours later, Rory and Logan were sitting on Logan's private jet waiting to take off for Los Angeles.   They were going to spend four days in LA with Lane and Hep Alien and attend both concerts there.  Then the band would be near Palo Alto for the entire following week.

"I am so glad you could get away with me,"  Rory said excitedly.  "This is like our first married vacation."

"You know, we didn't have a honeymoon.  Is there anywhere you want to go?"  Logan asked.

"Well, the way I see it, after we go home and tell our families, we are going to be kind of obligated to have some sort of ceremony there.  My Grandparents are never going to stand for missing their only grandchild's wedding,"  Rory said.  "Maybe we could go away somewhere after that?"

"Hmmm, I didn't even think of that.  You're right, we probably are going to have another wedding,"  Logan said.

"Is that ok with you?"  Rory asked.

Logan held her hand and said, "I'd remarry you every day if I had the chance."

Rory smiled and leaned over and kissed him as the flight attendant came to collect their drinks for takeoff.  After Rory buckled into her seat, she leaned back and sighed, "You might marry me every day, but how are our families going to react?  Judging by that conversation with Shira a few days ago, I don't think your family is going to be very happy."

"She will be after she finds out what Mitchum knows about you.  When Dad tells her you are also a Hayden, her opinion of you will change very quickly,"  Logan said rolling his eyes.  "Who cares what she thinks?  The beautiful part here is that she can't do anything about it.  It's done.  We're already married."

"That's very true.  I guess I am just getting a little nervous about responses.  I feel so guilty for not telling my mom,"  Rory said.

Holding her hand, Logan said, "Call her when we get to LA.  I know how close you are.  We don't have to keep this secret from everyone. I mean, Lane and Hep Alien knows.  Our friends know.  You should tell Lorelai."

"Maybe.  I don't know.  I think I would rather tell her in person,"  Rory said.  "Plus I'll know about the other thing by then too.  I'd rather not tell her I may be pregnant over the phone."

"Are you still going to take a test when we get to LA?"  Logan asked eagerly. Rory wasn't sure if his voice shook a little from emotion or from the plane bumping down the runway as it took off.

"Lane got me one of those early detection ones, but I'm not supposed to get my period for another week.  This is still pretty early.  It may not work,"  Rory said trying think logically and not to get either of their hopes too high.

"Yeah, I know.  I don't know how you are doing it.  The wait is driving me crazy!"  Logan said.

"Well, even if this test says no, we could try to make the next one say yes,"  Rory said.

"Really?  We haven't talked too much about it because this just kind of happened.  But you would want to maybe try to have a baby on purpose?"  Logan asked.

"This was a surprise, being in this position, yes.  But it has made me realize how much I want it,"  Rory said.

Since they were safely in the air, Logan unbuckled his seat belt and hers, then he lifted the armrest between them.  He put his arm around Rory as she snuggled into his side.  She wrapped and arm around his waist and laid her head on his chest.  He whispered into her hair, "Me too."

The private jet landed in Los Angeles about an hour later. Rory felt better after having had the chat with Logan on the plane. She had been uncertain exactly how he felt about the prospect of having a baby. She was very pleased to find out he was excited and hopeful too. Now she just had to work up the courage to take the test.

A limousine was waiting by the airstrip for Logan and Rory. After all their luggage was transferred from plane to car, they were on their way to meet up with Lane and the guys.

They arrived at the Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows around nine that night. While the Beverly Hills Hotel was not in Los Angeles, Lane and the band insisted on staying there for the history and ambience. It was only a half hour drive to LA and the concert venue. The members of Hep Alien couldn't resist staying in the building featured on the legendary album cover of The Eagles "Hotel California".

Rory was excited. She had read up on the hotel and its history. On the drive, she had schooled Logan on the many famous guests that had roamed the halls and slept in the beds. Rory informed him that everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Grace Kelly to the Rat Pack had stayed at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Though Logan had stayed there many times, Rory's enthusiasm was contagious. He too was grinning and excited by the time they pulled up out front.

Attendants grabbed their luggage and escorted them to their private bungalow. Logan knew Rory would want to stay in one of the bungalows and had made arrangements earlier. Rory was amazed and thrilled as they entered bungalow 7, Marilyn Monroe's favorite bungalow. She made a mental note to take pictures for her mom and briefly wondered if she could find a blonde wig.

Before the bellhop left, he informed Rory that Lane had left a message for Rory to call when she was settled into the hotel.

"I don't know about you, but I am starving. How does room service sound? Or did you want to go out?" Logan asked.

"Room service sounds perfect. I don't really feel like going out tonight. Do you mind if I call Lane? She'll probably want to stop over for a bit," Rory asked.

"Not at all. I actually have a few calls to make. You want to order and call Lane? I shouldn't be long," Logan said.

Lane arrived at the bungalow in under ten minutes.   Rory was just putting down the phone after ordering dinner.  "I have been waiting for you all afternoon!  Isn't this place awesome?  I guess you couldn't see that much in the dark.  Just wait until tomorrow though.  The pool has real sand around it!  It is so cool.  And do you know how many famous people have stayed here?"  Lane said in what seemed to be one breath.

"Yes, actually I do!  I did my research.  And now Hep Alien has been officially added to that famous people list!"  Rory said.

"Wow.  You're right.  Hep Alien is on the list of famous bands that have stayed here!"  Lane said looking amazed.  "Sometimes it still shocks me, you know?"

"Too bad the album cover has already been done,"  Rory joked.

"Oh, you can't redo Hotel California.  No way.  That is a classic album and a work of art!"  Lane said.  "So, how are you?  Are you ready to test?"  Lane smiled as she held up a small brown paper bag.

"You brought it with you now?"  Rory asked.

"Of course.  I'll have you know this test caused quite the issue with me and Zack.  Don't worry, I explained it all to him, just him in private.  He won't say anything.  I had to though.  He heard me asking one of the assistants to go buy it.  Poor guy.  He thought I might be expecting again.  He seemed happy but terrified,"  Lane laughed.  "However, it reopened the whole baby talk for us.  We are thinking we may try again during the next long break!"

"Lane, that's wonderful news!"  Rory said.  Then she looked nervous, reading the box.  "Think I should just do it now?  It says it can detect the pregnancy hormones 5-7 days before your missed period.  That puts me in the right time, I guess."

"Don't you want to know? I mean, if it says 'yes' right away, then you are.  I suppose a 'no' answer could be a little off and you still might be, but a 'yes' should accurate,"  Lane said glancing at the directions.  "I can send that assistant out as many times as I need to!"

"Ok, yeah, I do kind of want to know.  It's driving me crazy!"  Rory said taking the box and heading towards the bathroom.

Logan stepped into the room and saw what Rory was holding.  "Hi Lane.  So, are we doing this now?  Can it really tell us already?" he asked nervously.

Rory read him the information she and Lane had just read.  "So, we figured a 'yes' is really a yes.  A 'no' could still be a yes though,"  she explained. "Either way, we will have an answer in a week or less.  I am never, ever late.  You know that."

"Ok, do you, uh, need help or anything?" Logan said still nervous.

"I think I can handle it.  You two just wait here,"  Rory said and then walked into the bathroom closing the door behind her.

"So, we wait,"  Logan said to Lane.

"The box said the lines should form in like three minutes. It won't be a long wait,"  Lane said.

Through the door, they heard a muffled voice, "I can hear you two.  I can't pee feeling like you are listening to me!  Turn on the tv or go for a walk or something!  Oooh, and call the restaurant back.  I forgot to order extra fries! And a few extra sodas!  Oh and make sure they send ketchup!"

"Any other woman I would assume is pregnant with that craziness.  But she is a Gilmore.  That's just normal mealtime behavior,"  Logan said rolling his eyes.

"Grab your phone.  We will step outside and call about the food.  That should give her three minutes,"  Lane said.  Logan didn't seem like he wanted to leave, so Lane grabbed his arm and pulled him, "Trust me, it will be a lot easier and faster."

"We are leaving for three to five minutes!" she yelled over her shoulder.
