Gift of a Feather
Wind blew gently, bringing in the nippy air. It was a fair reminder that Spring was still present. With a day as beautiful as it was, it would be a shame to waste it.
Red eyes scanned the pages of a leather-bound book. It had been a small present from her best friend, a knight of the royal army, Link. He and her sister, Princess Zelda, had woken her on such a supposedly joyous occasion. It was an occasion the whole kingdom was celebrating. She, on the other hand, felt no reason for such a grandeur celebration.
Today was her birthday.
She was officially turning sixteen. As great as it was to be alive another year, it was just a damper to her. The subjects of Hyrule hated her. They called her a witch, whispered that she cursed the ones who raised her. They even claimed that she, as a four year old, had poisoned the queen, resulting in her early death.
No one really minded a break. There were going to be festivities within the town. Meanwhile, there would be a ball in the castle. The four nations would be joining, which was probably the only thing the girl looked forward to. With the four nations came the delight of hosting the champions.
Princess Mipha of the Zora was her best friend and fellow healer. Daruk of the Gorons was a protective big brother to her, especially since he and all of the gorons called her sister. Chief Urbosa of the Gerudo was a mother to herself and Zelda. Then there was Revali of the Rito, who would likely rain on the little bit of joy she would get out of her special day.
Then again, it was not like was used to actually used to having a "happy birthday."
"Princess Arlett," the human met the gaze of a maid, "your father requested you be ready for your guest to arrive."
The princess groaned on the inside. The ball was not for another few hours, but she did not want to disrespect him. With the time that remained, she was given a bath, her hair washed. They dried her hair as someone else did her make up. She She was given a blueish-green ball gown with straps that fell of her shoulders. The top of the dress looks as if the fabric was wrapped diagonally before being tucked into the "belt". The skirt was simply layer upon layer of tulle. She was given, thankfully, color matching flats.
Her hair had been forced into curls. How they did it, the princess did not know. The front most strands of her hair were pulled back and held in place by something. All she knew was that was were white flowers in her hair.
Arlett was relieved to finally be free of the pampering maids. She, with the most un-princess like grace, made a dash to the ballroom. Guest were to file in soon, and she could not wait to get the evening over with.
People began filing in. The herald announcing the arrival of hylian, goron, rito, gerudo and zora alike. The king was out and about, mingling with the guest. Zelda remained on her throne, next to her sister.
The blonde princess found it amusing how her younger sister appeared so unimpressed unless on of the champion's names were called. It was hard to refrain from giggling seeing the look that took over at the announcement that Revali had arrived.
Link had been ordered to gather the champions in a smaller separate room. It was for a little surprise Zelda had planned.
Once the flow of people had slowed, the blonde grabbed her sister's hand, "Come, Arlett. I have something for you."
"Anywhere but here is a relief," the younger sighed.
Zelda excitedly dragged the younger girl from the ballroom. They traveled through some of the halls until they approached a door. Of course, it looked just like any other door within the walls. The surprise that awaited her inside was certainly unexpected.
There was a long table, big enough to fit all of them. The champions all sat on either side of the table. Link chatted with Mipha as Urbosa was poking at Revali, probably fussing at him once more. Daruk was eating some of the rocks that he brought with him.
The blonde princess gestured to the room, loudly announcing their arrival, "Happy Birthday, Arlett."
Soon enough, the same phrasing came from the others. To the red haired princess' joy, they were having their own small party, away from all the crowds.
Battering was taken up. Food was passed around. Friends were talking among friends. She and Revali were the only quiet ones, but it was alright. She was perfectly happy observing her friends.
She was very surprised when Mipha, Daruk and Urbosa announced that they had all brought her gifts. Mipha had brought a basket full of elixirs, including many a bottle of fairy elixirs. Urbosa had taken her love of dancing into consideration and gave her a red scarf to use the next time she visited. Daruku had brought a chest full of gems from the Gorons, admitting that, he knew she did have much need for them, but would hopefully find something to do with them.
As she thanked her friends, she noticed Revali glaring at her. It was incredibly odd. Tonight, they had shared no words. She honestly feared he would suddenly speak now and ruin her special night. To be honest, this was the first birthday she had enjoyed in ages.
She excused herself from the room. Night had fallen and she was ready for rest. So much was happening and the chilly night air was something she needed as compared to the warm rooms, stuffed full of people. However, the courtyard provided enough distance to catch a breath of air and still remain close by.
"Don't you get cold in weather like this?"
Arlett jumped in surprise, turning to face the rito, "I... Yes." She really did not want to pick a fight right now, "But its much better than over heating from being inside."
"For once I have to agree." Revali huffed, "It's stifling in there honestly. How do you manage to live with it?"
She shrugged and somewhat joked, "Retain my will to live."
Silence settled over them and it was incredibly awkward. They had never been alone like this. Maybe they would travel together for a mission, but this was entirely new.
Revali decided to break it, "So tell me, what do you desire as a gift?"
"...Pardon?"
"This celebration is for your birthday, is it not? My people, of course, have brought gifts for you. As it is, Urbosa has felt the need to constantly nag me this evening over not getting you a gift."
That made a lot of sense. It was probably why he had been glaring at her earlier.
The princess raised a brow, "I expected nothing of them. Above all, I expected nothing from you. Considering how our relationship is...strained, so to say, I'm really surprised."
"Don't let it go to your head. I am asking out of want for relief and to be somewhat courteous for today's occasion.
Red eyes watched him for a short time. She wanted nothing from him. Simply having a peaceful evening, one where they were not arguing, was more than she could ask for. However, knowing Urbosa, she was required to ask something of him now. While it was rude, it was the Gerudo chief's way of trying to get them on better terms. That left her to wonder what she did want of him.
From inside, they could hear a waltz begin to play. Not two measures later, did the rito extend a wing to her. To add on to her shock, he gave a slight bow of the head.
He raised a brow, "May I have this dance, princess?"
"Of...course." Arlett hesitantly placed her hand in his, "Thank you."
As a gentleman should, he took the lead. Silently guiding her around the courtyard. The princess felt herself blush at the foreign gesture. She was used to this birdbrain to be throwing her under a load of salt rocks at this point. Tonight, he held his tongue and was actually polite. Arrogance still present, it was not half bad to have him like this.
The moon light reflected off of his feathers, giving them a blue/grey sheen that caught her eye. He led her into a turn. She could not help but watch the way his feathers reflected the ethereal light of the moon.
"Revali?" He hummed in response. "I know what I want."
"Is that so?" His green eyes bored into her own red eyes, "And what is it that your heart could possibly desire from me?"
"What I desire," she emphasized to catch his attention, "may be something you would rather not give me."
"Oh?"
"If I may be so bold, I would like some of your flight feathers. Three at the least."
She could see he refrained himself from barking out with sarcasm, "So you wish to pluck me then?"
"The offer is tempting... My reasoning is because I received something the others like in their regions. Mipha is a healer and my teacher, she gave me something that reflected her duty. Urbosa gave me a scarf. She takes pride in the fabric she has there for the desert heat. Daruk... He's a goron. The gorons have their mines. Considering I know that you take pride in your looks and it is a couple of days of flight to return to Rito Village, your feathers are the easiest and simplest thing to ask of you."
He hummed again. With the waltz now over, they parted. The rito bowed and she curtsied to him in turn. The silence between them was tense. She knew he was thinking on it. Once more though, she decided to remind him.
"Again, you do not have to." She shrugged, "I don't mind if you lie to-"
He lifted one of his wings and used his beak to pluck out five of his flight feathers. He handed them to her without a word. They ranged in color, size and length. Still, they were beautiful. She could tell he was not pleased, but he had done it anyway.
She curtsied to the rito was a small smirk, "Thank you, Revali."
He huffed and walked past her.
The party went on well into the night, but the princess had retired to her quarters long before it was over. She had been sleepy, yet decided to accomplish something before going to bed. The next morning, the Champions gathered to bid each other fair well and discuss what the next course of action would be.
Arlett wore a simple, light grey dress to be comfy. Her hair had been left down. There were a few waves remaining from the mass of curls she had sported the night before. It was to remain simple. She had much work to do after saying farewell to one and all.
She went down the line of Champions, curtsying and thanking them for coming to celebrate her sixteenth birthday. Reavli, noticed something in her hair when she spoke with Urbosa. There was a small metal piece holding some of her hair away from her face. Attached to it was a small sapphire. Under the gem, there were a group of greyish purple feathers. A couple of them were tipped with white. He would not say it aloud, but it went well with her dress.
The chief seemed to read his thoughts, "That's a beautiful headpiece, Arlett. Tell me, where did you get it?"
"I made it out of the gift of a feather," the princess responded.
It was there and then the rito knew that those were his feathers in her hair. Dare he say it, but he was proud that she could sport his gift. Maybe... She was not as bad as he originally made her out to be.
