You and Rick walk along the road in a calm silence. You were on your way back from a supply run that had for once, been successful.

Rick began to hum some unfamiliar southern folk tune to which you just laughed.

"Oh Judy girl..." He whispered, probably not intending for you to hear it.

"Judy?" You question.

He just smiles, ignoring the walker crawling on the ground beside you guys. It's disgruntled figure only moving an inch closer before you were past it.

"You Know," Rick starts, taking the conversation to an unknown place. "Back in high school, Shane dated a girl named Judy."

You raise an eyebrow at that. "Really?"

Rick nods. "She was good for him which is exactly why he dumped her."

You laugh. That sounded like Shane alright. "First he's got a Judy then a Judith." You say under your breath but Rick catches it.

"Excuse me?" He says, stopping in the road and swinging around to face you. He doesn't say another word, just stares at you with a look of disbelief and slight anger. He shifts from one foot to the other as he waits for you to reply.

"Sorry, bad joke." Is all you say as you continue to walk, moving right past him.

He doesn't follow for a second, just standing there looking as if trying to figure a response.

You decide to save him the trouble and stop walking. "Look Rick, we all hate to think about it, nevertheless admit it." Your words are carefully chosen, trying to avoid the bomb that was hidden in your sentences. One wrong word and Rick would leave you to walk by yourself.

"Admit what?" He questions, taking another step towards you as he raises an eyebrow.

"Please, don't make me say it." You beg, trying to plead with his eyes.

"Admit. What." He doesn't budge. You knew you were gonna have to say it.

You start to whisper your answer as if being quieter will change the outcome. "That Judith is Shane's baby."

Rick scoffs in response with a slight shake of his head. "Really?" He asks, cocking his head to the side a little.

You just nod slowly, unsure of where this conversation would go.

"She's not his, he's dead. Remember? Cause he tried to take my children from me." Rick says with his voice getting angrier.

"Rick, can we just drop it? I didn't mean to bring up such a sore subject..." You try to persuade him but once again he doesn't budge.

"No, y/n we can't just drop it. Judith is mine. She is my baby and I am the one raising her like a real father would, aren't I?" Rick explains now, making you regret making your stupid joke even more now.

Should have just stuck to a head nod. A head nod would have been so much safer than a joke regarding his cheating wife and best friend who slept with each other. Nothing like reliving the glory days.

You decide to take a safe route with your next sentence. "You're a better father than Shane ever would have been."

Rick nods. "Yeah, yeah I am."
