When I was seven, my parents brought Lily and I into the living room for a family meeting. We'd never had one before, but Gerard had promised there was no need to be nervous.
He seemed excited, in fact, as I trailed down the stairs after my sister. It was unusual for him to look so happy, so I knew something must be up.
"You know what they're gonna say, don't you?" I asked him. He just smiled in response.
My parents were sitting on the couch together, talking in quiet voices. When Lily and I got there, they stopped and looked at us. They were holding hands.
Lily and I sat on the other couch, and waited.
Finally, Lily spoke up. "So, what's going on?"
Dad chuckled and half-hugged Mom. Lily and I both rolled our eyes.
"Well, I"m just going to put this bluntly, because I don't know how else to say it."
Lily and I bot stared at our parents, waiting for the news. (A/N: "YOUR MOM'S COMING!" jk, jk.)
"Your Mom's going to have a baby!"
Lily and I both exchanged quick glances. It had just been the two of us for such a long time, we didn't even know how to feel about another sibling.
At almost the exact same time, we both launched a torrent of questions at our parents. "When's the baby coming?" "Is it a boy or a girl?" "What if you love it more than you love us?" "It better not be sleeping in my room!"
"Whoa, whoa, slow down," Mom laughed. "It'll be here in about seven months. We don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet. We'll always love you the way we love you now, adding on another family member won't change that. And we don't know where it's going to sleep yet."
After a while, most of our questions were answered. "It's getting late, girls, you should go to bed," Mom said, fondly kissing both of us goodnight.
"Sleep well, kids," Dad added, kissing us goodnight as well.
As I headed back upstairs, Gerard walked with me. "How did you know?"
"I overheard them talking about it in the kitchen this morning," he said with a sheepish grin.
I tried to shove his shoulder, but my arm just went through him. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I knew they wanted to be the ones to tell you," he explained as he followed me to my room. "I didn't want to ruin the surprise."
I went to bed that night feeling a weird misture of worry and excitement.
