Chapter 20
The thought of returning back to Hogwarts had sent Harry into another place mentally. Draco could tell he was losing him.
"Potter, you mentioned that the Weasleys had a lovely garden. Would you show it to me?"
After looking to Molly for permission, Harry nodded and got up from the table, Draco following close behind.
"If you have normal paper, that's easier to work with when learning origami. I'll show you once we're back in."
With that last statement, Draco followed Harry outside, immediately grabbing his hand.
"Is there a nice tree out here?"
"Thought you wanted the garden?"
Draco shrugged so Harry detoured towards the back of the property. Wrinkling his nose, Draco sat down and pulled Harry into his lap, leaning back into the tree.
"You looked like you needed some air, and I didn't think you wanted anyone getting the wrong impression about us. I also don't want them thinking they can hug me all the time. Sounds positively horrible being open and affectionate like that."
Harry laughed quietly, and further leaned into Draco.
"We can talk about Hogwarts more when we get back to yours okay? For now, just know that you're okay and I've got you. Just take some deep breaths and watch the clouds."
After a few minutes Harry was feeling better.
"Let's head back before they think we're snogging out here."
"Was that an option?", Draco asked teasingly.
He dodged Harry's weak hit and grabbed his hand until the house came back into view.
"Molly, your roses are absolutely wonderful. Mother grows some as well. They're her favorites, the yellow ones specifically."
"I adore the orange ones", Molly replied.
"I like sunflowers."
"For some reason that's not surprising at all Potter."
"You?"
"I'm partial to calla lilies actually. They're very delicate, but also sophisticated."
"Oi, we've got the paper!", Fred yelled.
The rest of the night was spent with laughter, much how teenagers should be spending their summer nights. Draco wondered if this was how normal people grew up. For a moment, he allowed himself to pretend that this was his normal every day life.
As they sat down for cake, Harry was doing much better. While watching Draco laugh with Harry's family, he was hoping this would be his new normal. All he wanted was for the people he cared about to accept each other. He hadn't dared to hope it would go this well, but Draco Malfoy was just full of surprises.
"Harry, this cake is wonderful dear!"
"Thank you. Neville helped, and Malfoy with the filling."
"Oh please all I did was chop the fruit. It wasn't anything amazing."
"Soon enough you'll be a pro in the kitchen. Bring Neville along next time too Harry. I do miss my house being loud and busy."
"I'll pass along the invitation."
"Wonderful. I bet you're both tired. I'll pack up some leftovers for you both to take home, and I'll let you be on your way."
Draco immediately went into the kitchen to help.
"Thank you Mrs. Weasley again for having me. I had one of the best evenings that I've had in years, probably my whole life actually."
"Don't be a stranger dear. You're always welcome here Draco."
Molly was surprised when Draco pulled her into a hug.
"That means a lot to me, thank you."
"Aww, group hug!", yelled George.
Draco couldn't even be mad. When they arrived back, Draco instructed Harry to go and take a shower while he put away the food. Once that was done, he grabbed his bag and changed into a pair of pajama pants, and then stole one of Harry's shirts because he could. He got pajamas for Harry, including one of Draco's shirts because it was only fair, and then left them on the bathroom counter.
After that, he went into that nice room Harry had shown him. He pulled one bean bag front and center, and grabbed the softest looking blanket in the room. With the fairy lights on, he then worked to figure out how to use the remote. Honestly, why couldn't there just be one universal remote?
When Harry found Draco, he was in the kitchen leaning over the stove. With a smirk, Harry hopped up onto the counter to watch him. Draco raised an eyebrow as he saw Harry in his spot a few moments later.
"How dare you steal my spot!"
"You stole my shirt."
"No I did not. I traded my shirt for your shirt obviously."
Harry only just noticed that the shirt on his body was not his own.
"Oh."
"You thought you had taste as good as mine Scarhead?", Draco teased.
"I must if you insist on stealing my shirts Prince", Harry retorted.
"Okay, that was a solid comeback. I can't be mad."
"Did you have a good time tonight?", Harry asked quietly.
"I can genuinely say that this was the second best night of my life."
"Second?"
"Obviously watching Tangled was number one."
"Yeah, that was a good night."
"Jokes aside, I'm really happy with how it went. I wasn't sure what the reaction was going to be, but it was very nice and welcoming. The Manor isn't my home, not anymore. If I had to say home was a feeling, it would be how I was feeling tonight."
"The twins really took a liking to you."
"I'm wonderful, who wouldn't like me?"
The laugh Harry was working so hard to hold back escaped.
"I'll take them up on their next dinner offer if there's another one. They're very kind, and I'm glad they learned all of the spells to make things easier for you. Fred is absolute rubbish at origami though. Don't tell him I said that. I fear he may be planning on dying my hair ginger."
Harry watched as Draco prepared their tea, wondering how to bring up his next question. Subtlety was not his strong suit. He was at least able to hold off until they got to his safe space.
"If I ask you a question, will you answer it honestly?"
"I suppose so."
"How many people did you apologize to?"
"Erm. A lot?"
"Like?"
Draco sighed and leaned against the wall, clutching his mug tightly.
"All the professors for starters, some in person and others through letters. Longbottom, which I assume you connected the dots with after what Fred said, George, Luna, Ginny, all of the Weasleys I've come into contact with including the Weasel but I must admit that his wasn't the nicest, and then Granger. I think that's it."
"Before or after?"
"I wrote to you last. I drafted what I was going to say to you hundreds of times but none of it sounded right. I apologized to most people before or during the trials, but yours came after because I couldn't come up with what I wanted to say. It didn't feel good enough."
Harry was beaming with pride, and he was happy that Draco had apologized to him last. He didn't think there had been, but this just proved that Draco didn't have an ulterior motive. The other man was genuinely sorry.
Opening his arms to Draco, he smiled softly as he came to curl up next to him. Without thinking twice, Harry pressed a kiss to Draco's cheek, and both men immediately blushed.
"What was that for?"
"Because you're you."
Draco just cuddled up into Harry, too stunned to say anything else. They watched Aladdin, Draco smiling softly as Harry quietly sang along to all of the songs. It was the perfect ending to a perfect night.
