Chapter 16
It was now Saturday, and Harry was excited to have plans for the day. He and Neville would meet up once a week or so, and he was ready to tell Neville about Draco. Their sleepover had gone by very well, and Harry was confident Draco would remain in his life.
After the movie they had gotten ready for bed. They shared Harry's bed, and he woke up to find that they were holding hands. With a smile, he crept out of bed. Half an hour later, Draco woke up and was unpleased to find Harry had left him alone.
When he got downstairs, he saw Harry was in the kitchen. Stepping through the silencing charm, he heard Harry humming along to music and couldn't help but smile. Hopping up onto the counter, he just observed Harry being carefree.
Spinning around, he noticed Draco after a few minutes.
"Good morning."
"Morning Scarhead. Sleep well?"
"Mhmm. Yourself?"
"Better than I have in awhile. I'm still not over Tangled, it was bloody fantastic. We have to watch all of the rest now."
"Just pop over any time. Except Saturday."
"Special date?", Draco asked teasingly.
His heart fluttered at the thought, but he pushed it away. Friendship first.
"Absolutely not. Just a friend popping in is all."
"Watch your horror movies with them, save the Disney for me."
"I promise."
"Wonderful. Now that that's out of the way, can I do something to help you?"
"You can set the table if you'd like?"
"Say no more."
As he set the table, he noticed Harry was making waffles.
"Did you know those are my favorite or are you just good at guessing?"
Harry blushed, and turned back to flipping the waffles.
"I knew. They're chocolate chip too."
"If you want to marry me Potter just say the word because I can get used to this."
"Ask again in a few years and we'll see where we are."
"I like that answer almost as much as I like chocolate waffles. And apple juice in the fridge? Saint Potter indeed my morning has been blessed."
Draco's antics always knew how to make Harry laugh. It was nice to wake up with someone in the morning and be able to do things for them like this.
"I have bacon too."
"I'm telling you, if you ever need a husband I'm very available."
"Is this your way of coming out?"
"Not intentionally, but yes. I'm gay."
"I'm bisexual. It's on the down low though."
Just when Draco thought life couldn't get any better.
"A perfect marriage."
"I accept your proposal."
"Typically you'd be the one to propose to me, but I'll make an exception for you."
"This conversation escalated quite quickly", Harry replied with a snort.
"I was supposed to be married by now you know."
"Seriously?"
"Quite. Astoria Greengrass, a pureblood."
"A female."
"Precisely my problem. It's always been about producing a suitable heir, nothing more. I'm tired of my life being a series of business transactions. I'm still holding out hope that maybe one day I'll find someone. I just need to get my life together first."
"I'll drink to that."
After breakfast, Draco headed back home with a new sense of purpose. He busied himself with potion preparation. Harry left the brewing to Draco, popping in once to help with the chopping before Sunday.
Neville always popped in on Saturdays to visit with Harry. Before Draco, he had been the only consistent person in his life.
"Hey mate!"
"Kitchen!"
"I knew something smelled good. Sorry I couldn't pop in last week. What's been new?"
The two spent the day catching up, but Harry wasn't sure how to approach the topic of Malfoy. Logically, he knew Neville was very accepting and would tell him it was probably a bad idea, yet support him anyways. That's just how Neville was.
It was Sunday morning now, and Harry was ready to tell Neville. The other man had decided to stay the night, which was no problem for Harry. Neville was currently helping him bake a cake to bring to the Weasleys' later tonight.
"Hey Nev?"
"Yeah Har?"
"I have to tell you something."
"If you tell me you've just realized you're in love with me after watching me defeat a giant snake, I'm sorry to say that it's no longer original", he joked, working to diffuse the tension.
"If only it were that easy. I've made a new friend though", Harry said carefully.
"Ah, so that's what you've been dancing around since I've been here. Are we talking a friend or a boyfriend?"
"A friend. Potential future boyfriend perhaps. I don't think you're gonna like who it is though."
"Harry. You know I'll support all of your decisions as long as they're not absolutely bonkers."
"This one may be, a tad. But he's really changed and he's-"
"Malfoy."
"Excuse me?"
"Malfoy", Neville nodded his head towards the living room where a very frantic Malfoy was standing, looking trapped.
"It was obviously him anyways. You were worried I wouldn't like him and I get along with practically everyone."
"Should I go? I can come back?"
"I have to be heading out anyways. When did you two become friends though?"
"A month ago give or take", Draco answered.
"So after you apolo-"
"Yes", Draco cut him off.
"Can I speak with you Malfoy?"
"I suppose."
"Neville", Harry threatened.
"Oh relax Har it'll just be a minute. Go finish up your cake."
Neville met Draco in the living room and cast a silencing charm.
"Harry will totally eavesdrop", he explained with an eye roll.
"That's not surprising."
"For starters, he doesn't know that you apologized to me?"
"He doesn't know I've apologized to anyone, and I prefer to keep it that way."
"Why?", Neville asked confused.
The Draco Malfoy he had grown up with would not have behaved like this.
"An apology isnt sincere if I go around telling everyone about it. That's not why I did it. I'm genuinely sorry for everything that I did, and I regret all of it. Going around telling people that I've apologised to others makes it seem insincere and like I'm doing it for all of the wrong reasons. That's not me anymore. I'm trying to be better."
"I see. And you're the one who taught him all of the new communication spells he was so eager to show me?"
"I was, yes."
"Thank you."
"For what?"
Neville didn't miss the confusion in Draco's voice.
"I'm sure you know how Ron's been taking the whole situation?"
After receiving confirmation, he continued.
"Look, I don't know how much anybody really knows about everything that happened the past few years, but there's a lot the public doesn't know. I'm sure it's a lot for you as well since you started off on the other side. I could have been the "chosen one", but Voldemort chose Harry instead because Harry is a halfblood, like he was.
Having to slay Nagini was enough for me. Obviously Harry has had it a thousand times worse. We're really good friends, which a lot of people don't know. It made things easier that way. Because of that, I can see that he's improved since I last saw him."
"So you're the only other friend he's had in that room."
"My point exactly Malfoy. He doesn't just let anybody in. I assume there's a connection between you and him like there is for him and I. I'm the only one he's fully verbal with when we're alone. No one else knows that.
I'll be honest, I hadn't fully forgiven you for all of the years of torment, but I think I can put all of that behind me now. You obviously don't have any ulterior motives, or else someone would've heard about them by now. Life is too short for silly grievances anyway, and you helped when it mattered, even when there were dire consequences to yourself.
Luna is a dear friend of mine, and you risked a lot when she was a prisoner in your home. I know everything you did for her, including calling Dobby to save them all, plus not giving Harry up. Your heart is in the right place now Malfoy. Just keep taking care of Harry. He needs all of the support he can get."
"Thank you Longbottom. I hope one day we can actually be friends. I won't mention any of what you've told me to anyone of course. Aside from my mother, the twins, and Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, you're the only one who knows we're friends. Although Luna probably knows, I don't doubt that she's part seer or a Legilimens. I haven't mentioned anything to Pansy and Blaise. They'll find out if and when Potter is comfortable with them knowing.
And in regards to taking care of him, I'll do so with my life."
"Damn right you will. Remember that I have a history of slaying snakes. I'm not afraid to add one more to my list."
Draco laughed, and Neville released the silencing charm.
"Oh thank Merlin", Harry muttered.
"Relax Potter, everything is fine."
Harry looked to Neville for confirmation.
"You trust Malfoy, and so do I. Although, I never thought I would utter that sentence. He's already caught me up on who knows, so I won't say anything until you're ready. I'm going to head out now that I've done my job of being intimidating. Good luck on your dinner with the Weasleys, the both of you. I'm sure it will go well."
Neville walked out of the house with a massive smirk on his face. It was about time really that the two of them had finally become friends. He couldn't wait until he saw Harry again to get all of the details.
