Entry #12

For some reason today, I woke up as early as usual and tried to get ready for a run, but when I peeked outside, it was pouring. I had heard a dull, soft wall of sound but I had not been sure what it was. I bathed in the cool, light grey glow of the early morning rain, then jumped back on my bed and leaned against the wall. Mel was still sound asleep. She said she was planning on going home today for a quick visit with her parents, then coming back tomorrow evening. I pulled down the book that I had bought yesterday and looked at the cover for a while. In the greyness, it looked more ominous than it should have been. It would have made lots of papery noises if I decided to cover the book right then and there, so I decided to wait until Mel had gotten up. The clock showed 5:30 am sharp. I reached over to my desk (being lazy) and grabbed my reading light. Then clipped it to my book and opened to the first page.

The place where I had left off was an odd situation indeed. The main character had just gotten her brother killed because of being somewhere at the wrong time. With blood on her fingers, she grabbed the murder weapon and killed the murderer. With the shock of her act, she broke down and sobbed uncontrollably. Then, after a blank in her mind, she found herself in a room, oddly comfortably set up, and the door opened. A kindly old man in a suit strolled in and asked her if she wished to join his company. A company for what, she asks. A company that takes requests for assassinations.

I was so absorbed in the book that I didn't notice when Mel got out of bed and turned on the room light. I was shocked back into reality. It was about 6:30 am. Her parents were coming to pick her up at 8, so she had to do some packing and cleaning up. I counted the pages I had read and it amounted to roughly 100 to 150 pages. And it was about a fourth of the way in. I didn't realize how thick this book was. Dictionary or bible size, made a bit smaller.

Oddly, the rain suddenly stopped. After Mel had rushed out and I, in a somewhat presentable outfit, said hi to her parents again and exchanged pleasantries and said bye until tomorrow, to Mel, I went next door and knocked on Sarah and Cecilia's door. And the three of us trooped down to breakfast. They had pancakes as well as access to the waffle maker. So we had a huge meal of waffle and pancakes. And over this feast, we decided to go on a little expedition. Well, yesterday was an expedition but it was more of a planned one. We decided to just get on the bus and then get off somewhere that seemed interesting and explore. Our ID cards for the university also supply us with access to the buses with no cost at all.

Soon we will be off. Since I was already ready, I took the waiting time to write a little here. I guess the next entry will be about our adventure.

Signing off,

Naomi
