THE GIRL BY THE LAKE

Adam walked through the forest to his favorite fishing spot, one that was shaded by trees. He never really thought about what was to come, but the day he first arrived in Fairfield; Arizona people were not fond of his visit. They considered him an outsider, someone who did not fit in well with everyone else. Everywhere he turned, people stared at him in wonder. The only place that he had ever thought he would feel at home would be the lake. Carrying his fishing pole and his bait, he sat down in front of the lake and started getting his fishing pole ready to fish.

The people told him the story about the lake. The legend went that a girl had gone swimming, but she went too far in and drowned on the spot. No one was around her or even watching her. The girl had only been sixteen years of age, the same age as Adam was. As Adam was about to cast out his fishing line, he heard a soft voice from the other side of the lake. Curiously, Adam stood and followed the sound to a small bush and saw a girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. She had not noticed that he was standing there; it was a strange feeling; he had thought that he found the perfect spot no one could have figured out; but apparently someone had.

"Excuse me," said Adam. "But what are you doing out here alone, miss?"

"What am I doing here alone?" she whispered as she looked at Adam. "Why? Because I wanted peace, that's why."

"But this is my fishing spot. You shouldn't be here."
"Come now, Adam, do you really think that I would steal your fishing spot?" When the girl said Adam's name, he became confused as he had not told the girl his name nor had he introduced himself, plus he did not know who she was.

"How do you know my name?"

"Oh no reason, I just guessed."

"Well, that was a mighty fine guess, young lady."

"Thank you."

"But are you lost?"

"No," says the girl, who stood from her spot. "I prefer being in this spot." she said as she walked out from behind the bush. The girl seemed solid enough, so Adam thought little about it until he started seeing her walk toward the forest.

"Where are you going?"

"I'm going home." she said.

"Let me come with you," says Adam. "A young girl like you shouldn't be wandering alone."

"Sure, you can come." says the girl as she continued walking. Adam turned and grabbed his fishing stuff, and the minute he turned back around, the young girl was nowhere in sight. Paranoid, Adam started searching for her, thinking about all the dangers in the forest that she would have faced if she went alone. He did not even know the girl's name and was already worried about her. As Adam walked further in the forest, he heard leaves crunching all around him. His heart pounded as he was trying to find the girl whom he was originally walking with.

"Hello? Young lady?"

Adam.... He heard a female voice say. Adam....

Picking up speed, Adam ran toward the sound, wondering where it was coming from. He continued running until he arrives right back at the same lake he had left. Only there was something different about it. The place seemed way more depressing that what it was before, and creepy fog had already started rolling in.

"Hello?" says Adam. "Is there anyone there? Miss?"

Adam... he heard it again. Following the sound, it led him toward the lake, where he saw the same girl, he was looking at earlier. She was walking across the lake as if she did not care that she could fall into the water. What was shocking was that she was walking on the water rather than sinking. As the girl walked across the lake, slowly fog surrounded the girl. It looked like she was controlling the fog. He wanted to run toward the girl to save her, but he feared he could drown in the lake. Adam ran closer to the lake just as the young girl had disappeared, completely engulfed in fog. Shaking his head as if he were imagining things, Adam walked back the way he came, only he did not think that the girl he was talking to be a ghost. As he left the forest, he found he was back where he originally was. There was human life everywhere, and he saw one family walking toward the lake. Nervously, he approached them, wondering what was going on and tried to figure out what he had truly seen.

"Excuse me," says Adam. "Sir." when the family did not give him attention, he attempted to touch the man on the shoulder. Though, the minute he touched the man, his hand phased through the man's shoulder. Adam stumbled back and looked at his hand. It was solid, but why had his hand phased through the man's shoulder? His next attempted did not turn out like he thought he would. Adam walked around and stood in front of the family, waving his hands around like a maniac trying to get the family's attention, but they just sashayed right through him as if he were a ghost.

"What the heck is happening!" he exclaimed to himself as he followed the family to the lake.

"Mom," says a young six-year-old girl. "Why are we at this lake?"

"Because, sweetheart," says the woman. "We're here to have a picnic and enjoy a good swim."

"But what about the ghosts?"

"Oh, those?"

"Mom, can you tell the story?"

"Alright but are you sure you won't get scared?" says the mother as the family had already arrived at the lake and laid a blanket down.

"I'm not scared!" says the young girl.

"Fine, the story behind this lake is spooky. There was a young man who came to this lake to fish, but before he could even fish, he came across a young girl who drowned at this lake." The mother continued. "It said that the girl had led him to a different dimension in the same place and they did not hear him from again,"

"Some say that he still haunts this forest, repeating his life and death over and over for all eternity." Adam's eyes grew wide. They were talking about him. Had he really been living the same day over and over? If he was, then that meant he was no longer alive. He was a spirit. Everything made sense now that he heard the story. The girl had lured him away and caused him to die somewhere in the forest, and now he was repeating it every day in an endless loop.
