GHOST GIRL

Solan was excited that he was going to watch over some young kids in a mansion that wasn't far from Greensboro. It was in one of the historic house districts and was called The Julian Price House. Solan was ready to help take care of the kids while the family was out running errands. He climbed into his car and drove toward the house in downtown Greensboro. Once he arrived, he pulled into the driveway which was hidden by trees and a building stood in the middle of this area, overgrown with plants and trees.

Solan got out of the car and walked over to the front door, where he knocked on it and waited for someone to answer. He heard the loud click of someone's shoes on a linoleum floor. The doorknob turned and standing in the doorway was a young woman with red hair and brown eyes. She cleared her throat and leaned against the door frame.

"Can I help you?" she questioned.

"Um, my name is Solan, and you hired me to watch your children," he answered. The lady looked at Solan with caution, then believed that he could be trusted.

"It's fairly nice to meet you, Solan," says the woman. "My name is Bethany Henderson."

"It's great to meet you too, ma'am."

"Nikki! Eric!" called Mrs. Henderson. "Your babysitter's here!"

"Coming, mom." said a voice from the top of the stairs. Walking down, he saw two kids, a brother and sister. Eric was slightly taller than his sister and he was also the oldest. Solan casually waved at them as their mother walked over to them.

"Okay, kids," she said. "Remember, your father and I are going to be out most of the night, so don't give Solan any hard times. Okay?"

"Yes mother." says the siblings. She smiled and kissed their foreheads. Turning toward Solan, she shook his hand and pulled him close.

"Solan, the kids need to be in bed at ten," she said casually, "And when you put them to bed, make sure that they locked their doors and go to the guest room. Stay there until we come back."

"Yes ma'am," he said. "But if you don't mind me asking," he continued. "What if I'm hungry?"

"I've already stocked your room and don't wander around the house after 3am," the kids' mother took a step back and smiled, "Dave!" she called. "Come on, let's go!"

"I'm coming honey!" he says Dave as he came running out of the bathroom. They combed his black hair back, and he dressed in a fancy suit. The couple held onto their hands and thanked Solan for everything that he was doing for them. Once they knew he could handle things, the couple walked out of the house and went on their date. Solan waved goodbye to them and closed the door as their car left the driveway.

"Okay kids!" he said, turning around. "What should we do first?" the kids looked at each other and had an idea. They turned toward Solan and grabbed his hands. Solan laughed as they dragged him upstairs.

"Let's play some board games!" says Eric enthusiastically. Solan nodded as they entered the playroom. They covered the floor with lots of toys and they painted the walls in pretty colors can catch the kids' attention. Nikki went over to a pink cubby and grabbed The Game of Life. As Solan started playing the game with them; he heard feet running down the hallway. Curiously, Solan stood and walked over to the door, but Eric and Nikki grabbed Solan by the arms and dragged him back.

"Don't open that door." warned Nikki.

"Why not?"

"Because it's not safe." answered Eric.

"What do you mean, it's not safe? Why did your mother tell me I shouldn't wander around past three?"

"Because," says Nikki. "There's something in this house, something evil."

"What?" questioned Solan.

"What she means is," corrected Eric. "There's this little girl who lived here before us."

Flashback

The little girl roamed through her house carrying a small doll. It looked like her back when dolls looked like their owners. Between 1860-1880, the young girl loved this doll and she would always take it with her. The doll had her red hair and her brown eyes, but one day; the little girl discovered a secret door that led into a hidden storeroom.

She walked in and immediately the door behind her closed, causing her to jump in fright, drop her doll, and run to the door. She banged on it as much as she could even yelled but no one seemed to hear her. She cried and cried. The longer she stayed there, the more she slowly died until she couldn't keep her strength up and collapsed on the spot.

"Eventually, she died and ever since that day, no one has found her body."

"Okay, now you're being silly. I think it's time that you two went to bed."

"But we aren't tired!" complained Nikki. "Don't make us go to bed." Nikki looked at Solan and made adorable baby doll eyes, having her brown eyes grow wide. Solan laughed. Nikki was probably the most adorable girl he had to watch over. He looked over at Eric, who looked slightly nervous.

"What's the matter this time Eric?" Questioned Solan.

"She's out there."

"Don't worry, I won't let her get you two," he responds. "Now, where are your rooms?"

"They're in the same hallway. We sleep in our own rooms across from each other."

"Come on." Solan guided the kids out of the playroom and brought them to their own bedrooms. Once they had arrived, Solan helped to tuck the kids in.

"Okay, you two, have a good night."

"Thanks, Solan." says Nikki.

"Goodnight!" calls Eric. Without another word, Solan closed their doors and began making his way to his own room when he heard someone crying. Thinking that it was Nikki out of bed, he followed the sound, only to come to a door that differed from. He leaned in toward the door and sure enough, the crying had come from the room. Stepping away, he grabbed the doorknob and slowly opened it.

He opened the door, which led it into a large, empty bedroom. It was hard for Solan to believe that anyone would live in that room since it was completely unkept and barely even had a smidge of furniture in it. Thinking it was his imagination, he closed the door until he saw a young girl around five years old wearing a blue dress that did not fit present day.

"Nikki?" says Solan. The girl kept going. When Solan looked down, he saw the doll with red hair. He shook his head and closed his eyes, trying to tell himself that it was nothing more than an illusion created after he heard the story. He opened his eyes, and the girl stopped in the center of the room. Solan stood there dumbstruck, it hadn't been his imagination; this was real. The red-haired girl slowly turned her head toward Solan, who was standing in place.

"Who are you?" he asked nervously. His heartbeat so fast that he was afraid it would jump out of his chest. "Are you that girl in the stories? The one who died?" The girl didn't answer. She just stared at Solan like he was a meal waiting to be devoured by vultures. The girl tilted her head creepily and started walking toward Solan. Finally, his legs could move, and he backed away. The girl continued to get closer until she had backed Solan against the wall. Her breath reeked of dirt and decay. it scared Solan as the girl leaned toward his ear.

"Help me!" she said in a raspy voice. "Help me," once she said those words, the girl backed away and disappeared through the wall. Solan stood there for a couple of seconds before he could finally move again and raced toward the guest room. His heart raced as he finally got to the room and entered, then slammed the door shut. Out of breath, he turned and locked the door before heading into the bathroom.

As he was getting ready for bed, he couldn't help but think about the story that the kids told him. A little girl had died in a hidden storeroom, but no one could find her or the storeroom. Whatever the case, while the kids he was watching were asleep; he was planning to investigate. The little girl stopped in the center of the empty bedroom like she was waiting for someone. Thankfully, he had brought his laptop with him, Solan walked over to his backpack and pulled out his only laptop. He turned the laptop on, then got on an internet browser where he searched for the blueprints to the mansion. If he was going to help this girl, then it involved research. After a while of researching, he finally stumbled upon the blueprint schematics of the mansion.

Clicking on the link, he looked through them until he found what he was searching for. On the blueprint, it was a drawing of the little girl's room; he tried to think about where the furniture was originally; suddenly it clicked. The red-haired girl stopped in the middle of the room. What if the girl wasn't evil at all and she was searching for someone to help her, grabbing a flashlight; Solan left his room even though he was told never to leave and walked toward the same bedroom he saw the girl last. With any luck, she might stand in the middle of the room like he saw the last time.

Arriving at the door, he turned it and pulled it open. Inside, he saw her standing in the middle once again. Solan entered the room this time without being afraid of her. All she was asking was for someone to help her. He walked over to the young girl and kneeled in front of the wall, where the wallpaper was torn to shreds. Moving the paper aside, he saw a small door that was still intact. Curiously, he turned the knob and pulled it open; behind it was a dark tunnel. Solan looked at the tunnel and crawled through it, eventually arriving at the storeroom. There, strewn in a corner, was the bones of a little girl. Tears stung Solan's eyes as they threaten to come down. He pulled his phone out and called the police. Whoever did it was going to pay. The door could not have closed by itself, someone had shut it in and locked her in the room. The phone was still dialing when Solan heard laughing.

"I did not think you would find this place Solan."

"What?" he said into nothingness. "Who's there?"

"Who else?" says a woman's voice as she stepped out of the shadows.

"Mrs. Henderson?"

"Bravo, Solan," says Mrs. Henderson. "I guess nowadays people find more information on the internet than in a book."

"What are you doing here?" questioned Solan. "I thought you were spending time with your husband? Running errands?"

"These 'Errands' were just a rouse," she says. "I wanted to see what you would do if you stayed the night."

"You did this to the little girl?"

"Her?" responds Mrs. Henderson. "No, my great grandmother did this."

"Your great grandmother?"

"Yes, I'm merely trying to finish her job, starting with you dead!" Solan's eyes widened as he quickly turned and started crawling out from the hidden storeroom. "You can't run from me Solan!" Solan ignored Mrs. Henderson and continued until he finally got out from the hidden passageway at the same time the police arrived, as well as the paramedics. Bethany did not expect the police to be in the room. By the time she got out of the passageway, the police had arrested her and charged her for attempted murder and destroying evidence. They had taken the little girl who was evidently the great aunt in a body bag and the arrangements for her funeral were in place. At the funeral, friends, and family, even people that didn't know the little girl, had arrived. Even the girl was there, watching from afar. She looked over and saw that Solan was staring at her and smiled happily. She was now at peace and slowly faded away. All around Solan, he could hear an echo of the girl's voice.

"Thank you Solan, for everything."
