Chapter 22: The Unseen Threat
-Yui-
I jolt awake, my heart racing with a ferocity that feels like it might burst through my ribcage. My entire body is heavy and stiff, and an intense pain shoots through my wrists where they are bound.
I blink rapidly, trying to clear the fog from my mind, but the darkness around me is thick and suffocating.
As my vision adjusts, I make out the silhouette of Danzo sitting directly in front of me. His presence is imposing, an aura of authority and menace emanating from him even in the dim light. He is seated with his arms crossed, his posture rigid and authoritative.
The single lantern in the room flickers weakly, casting long, distorted shadows that dance across the walls and add to the eerie atmosphere.
"Welcome back, Yui," Danzo says, his voice as cold and sharp as ever. It's almost casual, as if we're simply having a routine conversation.
"I trust you're feeling more... awake now."
I try to move, but the ropes binding my wrists are unyielding. Each attempt to shift causes a sharp, burning pain. I glance around frantically, trying to get a sense of my surroundings, but the room is bare except for a few crates and the dim lantern. The oppressive silence is punctuated only by the occasional drip of water from somewhere in the darkness.
"W-what do you want from me?" I manage to croak, my voice barely more than a whisper.
"W-where am I?"
Danzo's gaze is unrelenting. He leans forward slightly, his eyes locking onto mine with a chilling intensity. "You're in a location where I can question you without interruption. I need answers, Yui. You possess abilities that I need to understand."
His words send a chill down my spine. My breath catches in my throat, and I feel a wave of nausea wash over me. "I—I don't know what you mean. I don't have any special abilities."
Danzo's expression doesn't change. He continues to regard me with an almost detached curiosity. "You're aware of your abilities, whether you choose to admit it or not. They're the reason you're here. I need to know how they work, how you came to possess them, and what triggers them."
A rush of fear floods through me. My mind races, trying to piece together what he could possibly mean. "I— I don't understand," I stammer. "I don't have any abilities..."
Danzo's eyes narrow dangerously. "You're lying. I've seen the effects of your power firsthand. Now, I suggest you tell me the truth before things get unpleasant."
My heart pounds louder, each beat a deafening drum in my ears. I can feel the weight of my anxiety pressing down on me. The fear of what might happen next is overwhelming. I start to tremble uncontrollably, and my breathing becomes ragged. My eye cover, which had been partially askew, now slips more fully off, exposing the full extent of my fearful gaze.
"Please," I beg, my voice trembling. "I don't know anything. Please don't hurt me."
Danzo rises from his seat, moving towards me with a slow, deliberate pace.
His footsteps are silent, but each one feels like a foreboding echo in the small, dark room. He stops just in front of me, his face partially obscured by the shadows, but his eyes are piercingly clear.
"You need to be more cooperative," he says, his tone cold and menacing. "The more you resist, the more pain you will experience. Now, tell me about your abilities. How do they work? What triggers them?"
"I—" I start, but my words are cut off by a sudden, excruciating pain in my head. It feels like my skull is being squeezed by an invisible hand, the pressure building until I can hardly think. I gasp, my eyes widening in terror.
"S-stop! Please, stop!"
Danzo's face remains impassive, his eyes cold and unblinking. "Tell me what I want to know, Yui. I don't have all night, and I'd prefer not to prolong your suffering."
The pain is relentless. It feels like my entire head is being crushed, each pulse of agony making it harder to focus or think clearly. I can't stop the tears that stream down my face, and my body shakes with the intensity of the pain. I try to curl into myself, but the ropes prevent any real movement.
"I—I don't know!" I scream, my voice cracking with desperation.
"I've always had these... these things happening when I look at people, but I don't know why! I can't control it!"
Danzo's eyes narrow further, his patience wearing thin. "And how did you come to have these abilities? Were you born with them? Or did something trigger them?"
"I—I don't know!" I sob, my voice barely a whisper.
"I've had them as long as I can remember. My family never told me anything. I don't know why this is happening!"
Danzo's expression remains unchanged. His gaze is as cold and unfeeling as ever. "You're hiding something. There must be more to your past, something that you're not telling me."
"I swear, I don't know anything!" I plead, my voice hoarse and trembling. "I've told you everything I know. Please, just stop hurting me."
Danzo's gaze grows colder, his eyes devoid of empathy. "Your ignorance is no excuse. You have a unique ability, and I need to understand it fully. If you refuse to cooperate, you'll remain here indefinitely. And trust me, you don't want to see what happens if you push me further."
I try to pull away, my body shaking with fear and frustration. "Please, I'm begging you," I sob, tears streaming down my face.
"I don't know what you want from me! Just let me go. I don't want to be here. I don't want to be hurt anymore."
Danzo's face remains impassive, his tone unwavering. "You are in no position to make demands. You will answer my questions, or you will face the consequences. I can assure you, the longer you resist, the worse it will be."
My mind races, trying to come up with any shred of information that might appease him, but nothing comes to mind. "I—I can't tell you something I don't know!" I yell, my voice hoarse and desperate.
Danzo stands up, his movements deliberate and menacing. He walks toward me, and I instinctively try to shrink away, my fear palpable. "You think you're scared now?" he says coldly. "You haven't seen anything yet. You will stay here until you tell me everything you know, and if you don't, I will make sure you never leave this place."
His words are a chilling promise, and I can feel my sanity slipping. "I don't know anything!" I scream, my voice breaking. "I swear, I don't know anything! Please, just let me go..."
Danzo stops in front of me, his presence overwhelming. "You will stay here and answer my questions. You have no choice but to comply."
My breathing is ragged, my body trembling uncontrollably. The room feels like it's closing in on me, and the darkness seems to press against my mind. "Please," I whisper, barely able to form words. "I don't know... I don't know what you want... I can't... I can't..."
Danzo's gaze is unyielding, his voice a harsh whisper. "You have until I count to three. If you don't tell me what I want to know by then, the consequences will be severe. One... Two..."
The threat in his voice is clear, and I can feel my resolve shattering. My fear consumes me, making it impossible to think clearly. "I don't know!" I sob, my voice breaking. "I swear, I don't know! Please, just stop!"
Danzo's eyes narrow, his patience wearing thin. "Three."
The finality in his voice sends a shiver down my spine. I can't take it anymore. My tears flow freely, my body shaking uncontrollably. "Please," I cry out, my voice barely audible. "I don't know anything! Just let me go. I'm begging you."
Danzo's face remains impassive, his gaze as cold as ice. "You have been warned, Yui."
The darkness closes in around me, and I feel a deep sense of dread. The fear is all-consuming, and I can't escape the feeling that I'm trapped in a nightmare with no way out.
