Chapter 38: With or Without You

"I can't live. With or without you"

"You need to get up.  You're going to be late for work".  Derek told Anita as he looked down at her.

Anita was wrapped up in blankets on the bed, groaning as she finally opened her eyes again and looked up at him innocently. "But I'm still sleepy". She whined. "Why don't you have a job? I'm tired of doing all the work". Anita complained.

Derek chuckled as he grabbed a grey t-shirt and started to put it on.

Anita sat up in bed and groaned. "Nooo, don't put a shirt on".  Anita sat up on her knees, leaning forward as she grabbed at the bottom of his shirt, trying to pull it back up.

Derek looked at her with amusement, his smile meeting his eyes.  "You don't want me to wear a shirt?"  He asked in faux shock.

Anita giggled and shook her head.  "Nope".

"Nope?"  Derek asked as Anita continued to pull at the shirt with a nod.

"Okay".  Derek yanked at the shirt, pulling it off as he through it on the bed before leaning closer to Anita, capturing her lips before he pushed her back down on the bed gently.

Anita giggled again as she rested her hands on his now bare chest.  "I have to get to work".

Derek shook his head.  "You weren't complaining a second ago".  And then he started to kiss down her jawline.

Anita stood at the counter, with a bundle of files under one arm, against her chest while holding a pen in another. She was waiting by Parrish as he was giving Argent and Derek back their stuff.

She needed Parrish to look over some forms and sign as he forgot to do so earlier, but she could have done it later but she wanted to see Derek.  She looked over at him with a hidden smile.  Derek, who felt her eyes on him looked over as well and smiled slightly, not wanting to get caught by either Argent or Parrish.

"Sorry, but I can't let you walk out with this". Parrish looked to Argent as he held the taser in his hands. "It's way above the legal voltage limit".

"I only use it for hunting". Argent told Parrish.

As Anita and Derek held eye contact. Anita lipped; "hunting you" to Derek causing him to run his hand over his mouth to hide his smile. Derek then looked over to Argent with a bored expression.

"Yeah, well, I'm pretty sure you could use it to jump-start a 747". Parish said.

"This property belongs to me and the charges were dropped". Argent then looked over to Derek. "Although, I'm not exactly sure whose responsible for that"

Anita looked over to her side, seeing Stilinski walk in and stand beside her while turning to Argent.

"I am". Stilinski then looked to Parrish. "I'll take care of this, Parrish".

"Sheriff, I'm not kidding this rings a few watts from being a lightsaber". Parrish told him.

Anita looked down, holding back a laugh from his comment. When she looked back up she saw Derek looking at her again with the same look he did earlier.

He was going to be the death of her.

"I said I'll take care of it". Stilinski grabbed it and closed it before turning to Argent and Derek. "A word". Stilinski told them as he headed to his office. Argent following as Derek gave one last look to Anita before passing her.

Anita smiled to herself before placing the filed down on the counter.

"You should stay away from him". Parrish looked to her.

"What?" Anita asked.

"The look you two were giving one another just now. He's bad news". Parrish warned her.

Ohhh, sweet Parrish was a little too late.

"Those looks were nothing. Besides, I already have a boyfriend". Anita said.

"You do?" Parrish frowned but then quickly cleared his throat, covering up his disappointment.

Anita opened one of the files and pushed it towards him while flicking the pen out for him. "You're such a nerd by the way. Here's your lightsaber". Anita joked.

Parrish rolled his eyes. "Ha-ha". He said sarcastically before grabbing the pen from her.

Anita smiled widely as she watched Parrish look at the documents and started to sign them.  She tapped her fingers on the counter and waited.  Parrish soon put the papers back in their correct files before stacking them.  The phone started to ring and Parrish grabbed it, holding it up to his ear.

"Beacon Hills Police Station".

Anita grabbed the files and made her way back to her desk where she sat down and continued her work.

~~~
Anita grabbed the blueberry muffins out of the oven and set them on top of the stove, using her foot to kick the oven door closed. She took the oven mit off and carefully took the hot muffins out of the pan and onto the cooling rack. She shook her fingers a few times from the heat.
Anita grabbed an oven mitt and put it away.
Derek, who smelled the muffins walked down the spiral staircase.
Anita turned on the sink, washing her hands as she heard Derek enter the kitchen. "Don't eat them yet. They're hot. Don't need a repeat of last time where you put it in your mouth and spat it out from the heat". Anita smiled from the memory.
"I'll give them ten seconds to cool off". Derek joked, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her cheek.
"That's a start". Anita laughed.
Derek let go and opened the fridge while looking inside. "Want something to drink?" He asked.
"No, I'm fine". Anita took two of the muffins and cut them in half, letting the steam come out of it.
Derek looked in the fridge with confusion and then sudden realization came across his face. He forgot his beverage from upstairs. Derek left the kitchen to retrieve it.
Anita placed a sliced up muffin in front of Derek's seat and then one in hers. Anita sat in her chair and pulled apart the muffin some more before eating it. Anita ate a few more bites, eating a quarter of one half before she chewed slowly and then stopped.
Anita had a look of concentration on her face before looking at the muffin, analyzing it. Her eyes widened for a moment before she spat out the rest of the muffin on the plate.
Anita tried to stay calm but she could feel her heart start to beat rapidly. Anita stood up, going to a drawer and went through it. She couldn't find it.
"Derek!" She called. She started to look faster. "Derek!" She called again, this time panic evident in her tone.
"I'm here. At least my muffin will be cooled off now". Derek smiled, making his way into the kitchen, holding his beverage before setting it down onto the table.
"There's cinnamon in the muffins". Anita told him.
Derek's smile dropped. "What?"
"I ate almost half of the muffin. There's cinnamon. I don't-I can't find-". Anita started to panic even more.
"Sit down. I'll find it". Derek instructed calmly.
Anita breathed out, sitting back down in her spot as she looked at the ground, her one leg bouncing up and down nervously as she ran her hands through her hair, gripping at it.  She heard Derek go through the cabinet she was at before. Derek shook his head and looked at the drawer with confusion. He started to look faster and when he heard Anita's breathing start to sound different, he ripped the drawer out, some of the screws falling onto the ground as he dumped the contents onto the floor.
Nothing.
Derek remembered the extra one in the bathroom.
He didn't say anything as he rushed out of the room to get the other one.
Anita felt her hands start to shake and she slowly pulled them away from her hair, resting them on her legs, leaning back in her seat. Anita felt her breathing becoming harder and then a sense of nausea consume her.  Anita tried to calm herself down but hearing Derek in the other room, destroying the bathroom didn't help. She then heard him let out a frustrated curse. Soon enough he came back in.
"They're gone." He said angrily and then looked to her, not allowing her to react as she was soon in his arms.
The two didn't know what was going on. They were both careful. Derek refused to buy any cinnamon products and even threatened his uncle if he brought a sprinkle of cinnamon in the loft he would rip his throat out again.
Derek sped down the road, his hands clenching the steering wheel. He was going well over the speed limit but did not care. He was panicking even more.
Anita got worst by the time they got to the car. She couldn't speak at this point and was basically gasping like a fish out of water.
"You're okay". Derek tried to reassure her, taking a sharp turn.
When Derek didn't hear her breathing he looked over and saw her eyes closed and head against the window.
"Anita? Anita! Wake up!" He said loudly. "No, no. Don't do this.  Don't do this to me". Derek pleaded, grabbing onto her shoulder, shaking her slightly.
"He doesn't have long". Simon said from behind Anita's seat.
"Why didn't you tell me ghosts can see a countdown?" Clarice asked from behind Derek's seat, looking at her sister with distraught.
"Because of what we're feeling right now". Simon looked to Clarice. Clarice turned her head, staring at Simon.
Derek pulled to the front of the hospital, slamming on the breaks before getting out of his seat and running around to get to Anita.
"She has less then a minute. Derek isn't-"
"Slow it down!" Simon shouted to Clarice seeing Derek open the door to Anita's side, knowing they didn't have long to save Anita.
"What?" Clarice questioned.
"Channel your energy. Keep a hold on her. It's going to get weird-" Simon barely finished as he reached over the seat, grabbing Anita's shoulders, causing him to soon disappear.
"Simon?" Clarice asked.
"Come on". Derek started to pull Anita out of the car and into his arms. Before he did it completely, Clarice scrambled to the center console and all she thought about was Anita. Clarice grabbed her sisters hand and she too disappeared.
Derek felt a sense of deja vu. Just like the night, Anita was shot by Matt. He bursted through the doors with a limp Anita in his arms.
"Help! I need help!" He shouted.
Nurses came running over. One being Melissa McCall.
"Derek. What happened?" Melissa looked at Anita.
"Allergic-She's allergic". Derek spluttered out. "She's not breathing".
A nurse brought a moving bed over and Derek placed her down.
"She's breathing". One said which caused Derek to be confused. She wasn't breathing a minute ago. He watched as they rolled her away and he took a step forward, Melissa placing a hand on his chest from keeping him from following.
"Is she-"
"Derek. Take a moment. You need to sit down".
Derek didn't answer Melissa.  His eyes never left Anita and when she was out of sight.  His gaze stayed to where he last saw her.  "I don't know how this happened".  Derek whispered, his voice cracking in the end. He interlocked his hands as he grabbed the back of his head, pacing, eyes starting to get cloudy as tears built in them.
"Okay.  Okay".  Melissa said softly, nodding as she placed a comforting hand on his shoulder and then his back, guiding him to an empty seat.
Simon and Clarice flew onto the ground of the hospital. Both groaning as the two slowly sat up. Clarice breathed out, looking over at Simon.
"What was that?" Clarice asked.
Simon took a few more breaths, shaking his head before looking over to her. "Don't know honestly. Heard that if you channel-give your energy to someone who is about to die, it helps them hold on a bit longer". Simon explained.
Clarice slowly stood up, looking at her sisters sleeping figure on the bed. Clarice walked closer to her and went to grab her sisters hand but it went through.
"We were in there for awhile. We won't be able to do anything for quite some time. We need to recharge". Simon stood up, looking at Anita and then to Clarice.
Clarice looked at her sister sadly. "Simon...if we didn't do that. Would my sister have died?" Clarice asked, only looking at her sister.
Simon looked at Clarice sadly. Pausing for a moment before answering;
"Yes"
