Chapter 37: Stand By You
"When someone is going through a storm. Your silent presence is more powerful than a million empty words"
"Then why are you putting him in here?" Scott asked Sheriff Stilinski.
"He's not". Stiles was quick to defend his father. "It was my decision".
"Stiles, I can't help you if you're in here".
"And I can't hurt you". Stiles eyes moved slightly passed Scott, letting out a deep breath.
Scott tuned in his werewolf hearing as he heard a pair of feet making their way to them. When he turned around, he saw Anita.
Anita looked at the gate that read, Eichen House.
She felt a shiver run down her spine and goosebumps lace her arms. She could see her 12 year old self crying out for her parents as she was dragged through those gates and up the steps.
"Thought you could use some advice before going in". Anita gave him a comforting smile.
"How did you know I was going to be here?" Stiles asked.
Anita raised her eyebrows, telling him to take a guess.
Stiles nodded. "It was Simon, wasn't it?" Stiles asked.
Anita gave a confirming nod. "It was Simon".
"It was me". Simon said from beside Anita, doing jazz hands, making Anita let out a laugh.
Anita shoved her hands into her coat pockets. "If I wasn't so traumatized I would go in there with you. But, doesn't mean I can give you a few pointers. Don't make eye contact with anyone, don't have an attitude, especially with the guards and stay low". Anita explained. "Oh! And if some teenager named Oliver wants to be your friend. Don't take it. He's up to no good. If you want to befriend anyone there, befriend one of the people who think they're Jesus". Anita nodded.
Stiles, Scott, and Sheriff looked at her a bit concerned. They couldn't believe what they were hearing. As the three looked concerned, Anita remained calm as this was her 'normal'.
"Thank you, Anita". Stiles said slowly, he seemed more nervous now. Her advice didn't help him mental wise. But he appreciated that she even came here.
"Are there ghosts in there?" Stiles pointed towards the gates.
Anita already knew the answer but she looked anyway. Seeing a few lost ghosts walking around aimlessly. She recognized them from when she was in there. Her eyes fell back to Stiles.
"Nope". She answered. She didn't want to worry him even more.
"Liar". Simon coughed.
"Shut up". Anita muttered.
"We're going to find something Stiles". Scott told Stiles.
"What if you can't?" Stiles looked at his best friend sadly before taking a step closer to him. "If you can't, then you have to do something for me, okay?"
Scott gave a nod.
"Make sure I never get out". Stiles told Scott seriously.
Anita's eyes widened slightly at Stiles words. She was about to say something but Stiles stepped away and looked to his dad.
"Come on". Sheriff nodded.
Anita and Scott watched as the Stilinski's pushed opened the gates and walked up the stairs. Anita let out a deep breath before grabbing her gloves from inside one of her coats pockets and putting them on.
"What are you doing?" Scott looked at her and then his eyes widened. "Are you admitting yourself in?"
Anita's neck snapped over to him and gave him a look. "Oh, lord no. I'm not dumb. Amanda-night shift lady is going to explain some things but not give them answers they deserve. I'm going to be there to make sure Stiles and Sheriff know everything". Anita stepped forward and placed her glove hands on the gates. She took in a deep breath.
"Simon?" She asked.
"Yes?" Simon stepped beside her.
Anita's eyes that held fear behind them looked at him. "Stay by my side?" She asked in a small voice.
Simon gave her a comforting smile. "Wouldn't dream on leaving, birdie".
Anita gave him a nod and then pushed the gates open.
Anita kept her eyes straight ahead and with each step she took she could feel the dark energy get closer and closer.
"Johnny? Johnny? Where are you? I need my meds".
A distraught middle aged ghost asked on one side of the lawn, walking around slowly. She was dressed in an attire that was worn from the 50s'.
Anita suddenly came to a stop when a man in a World War I Uniform shot out in front of her, lying down just inches from her feet.
"Where is everyone?" The man questioned in panic as he grabbed at his radio. "I need back up! Back up!"
Anita heard the man shouted into his radio. Anita barely glimpsed at him and then carefully walked over him and continued on.
"Almost there, birdie". Simon's comforting voice spoke to her.
She was. She was almost there.
"Mommy?" A little girls voice sounded.
Anita stopped and looked over where a little girl was looking around. "Mommy, where are you?"
Anita's lips parted as she just looked at the girl. The girl reminded her of herself. The little girl played with her dress and cried softly before meeting Anita's gaze.
"Can you help me find my mommy?" The girl asked.
Anita's voice got caught in her throat as she didn't know what to say.
"She can see us?" The woman from the 50s asked.
"Can you help me find my group? Bravo Team". WWI pleaded to Anita as he made his way over to her.
Anita quickened her pace as the three were throwing out questions and comments her way. When Anita reached the doors of Eichen she flung them opened and closed them behind her, taking in steady breaths.
Now, these ghosts would be able to walk right through but Anita calls these ones Lawn Ghosts. They only stay at the front of Eichen. They never come inside and they never come in the back. They stay on the lawn out front.
"You okay?" Simon asked.
Anita nodded. "Mhm". Anita then walked through the other door where she saw a few patients. She recognized them all.
"Anita?" Amanda questioned. This made Stiles and Sheriff turn around. "Are you admitting yourself, dear?" Amanda asked.
Anita scoffed. "No, Amanda. I'm here for my friend". Anita gestured to Stiles. She surprised herself by the comment. That was the first time she even mentioned Stiles of being her friend.
"Oh". Amanda seemed disappointed.
"Anita, you don't-" Stiles turned to her.
"Hey. As much as I want to leave right now, you need honest insight of this place. I'm not trying to talk you out of it but you should be prepared by an expert". Anita let out a short laugh at the end.
Stiles gave her a thankful smile. "Thanks". He breathed out.
"This way, please". Amanda gestured to the three.
Sheriff put a hand on Stiles back, gesturing for him to go first and Anita was behind Sheriff. Once they got into the office, the Stilinski's sat in a chair while Anita stood behind them.
"First 72 hours there's no phone calls, no e-mails, no visitors. We will be taking you from here to a brief physical. In the morning you'll be assessed by a staff psychologist. Speak to a social worker and attend group therapy". Amanda explained.
"Make sure you put names of people who can see Stiles on the visitors page. They won't let anyone in if their name isn't written down". Anita told Sheriff, remembering how Derek told her him and Laura tried to visit but they couldn't because of the Visitor rules.
"I feel like we're forgetting something". Sheriff put the pen down, clearly nervous.
"You will be wearing these, Stiles. No laces allowed". Amanda pushed forward the clothing and shoes.
"I sure don't miss that outfit". Anita muttered to herself.
"You don't have a belt do you?" Amanda asked Stiles.
"It's not in fear of you hanging yourself but others using it against you". Anita leaned to Stiles.
"You're going to scare him even more". Simon put a hand on his face.
"Just being honest". Anita said to him.
"What was that, Anita?" Amanda looked to her.
Shit.
"Just thinking out loud". Anita quickly saved it.
"And please empty your pockets in here". Amanda gestured to Stiles as he started to do just that.
"Your pillow. Your pillow. We forgot your pillow". Sheriff remembered and started to freak out.
"Dad, it's okay". Stiles looked at him.
"No, no. You're never going to be able to fall asleep. We...we got to go back".
Anita looked at Sheriff, wanting to tell him they wouldn't allow the pillow anyways but decided against it. She loved how Sheriff was nervous and didn't want Stiles to go to this place. It was hell and she wished her parents did this.
"It's fine dad. I don't need it"
"I can't believe I forgot it. Every time that we've ever stayed in a hotel, the first thing you pack is your pillow. You can bring it tomorrow. It's all right". Stiles put the rest of his stuff in the bin.
Sheriff suddenly stood up. "Okay, you know what? Stop. Stop. Enough. Stiles, get your stuff. I'm not checking you in there if you're not gonna get one good nights sleep". Sheriff told his son firmly.
"Dad". Stiles then stood up, placing a hand on his shoulder. "I haven't had a good nights sleep in weeks". Stiles told his dad softly and then hugged him.
Anita watched with a small smile as Sheriff hugged his son back. The two stayed that way for a moment before Stiles pulled away. Stiles looked to Anita.
"Good luck". Anita whispered to him as she clasped her hands in front of her.
Stiles gave a tight smile her way before leaving the room.
"It's only for a few days". Anita reassured her boss.
"I don't know how you stayed here". Sheriff told her as they watched Amanda and Stiles walking away.
"He'll be okay. He has an advantage here that I didn't". Anita told him.
"Yeah? What's that?" Sheriff looked her way.
Anita smiled a bit, turning to him. "He has a family here for him. He has you".
~~~
Anita unlocked the door to the loft, sliding it open. As she did so, Derek was standing there, causing her to jump and drop the keys.
"Oh, Jeesh!" She breathed out while Derek had an amused look on his face. "Why are you standing there?" She asked as she bent down and grabbed the keys.
"Heard you walk up the stairs". Derek told her with the same amused smile on his face.
Anita smiled as she stepped inside, Derek reached over grabbing the door and sliding it closed.
"How are you feeling after the whole station incident?" Anita asked.
"I'm fine. Healed". Derek watched her lock the door, his eyes going to the butterfly bandaid on the side of her forehead. "I should be the one asking you".
Anita locked the door and turned her head, looking back at him. She only shook her head, giving him a reassured smile. "I'm fine. It was just a scratch".
"I should've broke out of those handcuffs and shielded you". Derek instantly said, he felt guilty. This was the second time Anita got hurt in the station and both times he was there and did not protect her.
"And how would you have explained that to them? Can't rush exposing the supernatural to everyone". Anita turned around to face him completely, leaning against the door.
Derek shook his head slowly, closing the gap between them as he placed his hands on either side of her face. "I don't care. I can't let you get hurt again. I can't let you..." Derek swallowed harshly, just thinking about it killed him. "I can't let you die. If you died...that's on me".
Anita grabbed his hands from her face and lowered them so she could clasp them into her hands. She looked at him softly. "I'll be fine. We will be fine".
Anita then let go of one of his hands, holding the other as he clasped her hand back. Anita smiled up at him. "You worry too much". She whispered.
"Ughhh. He does, he's disgusting".
Anita looked past Derek while Derek turned his head.
There stood Peter in the middle of the room, drinking something from a glass.
Derek glared at his uncle while Anita just questioned what he was doing here. "What is he doing here?" Anita asked Derek.
"He should've left earlier". Derek almost growled.
"I'm going. I'm going". Peter waved them off. "You two are so mushy when you talk. It's gross, especially hearing it come from me nephew. Eugh, what did you do to him Anita?" Peter questioned, smirking as he went to grab his things, laughing.
