Chapter 20: No Surprises

"How terrible it is to love something that Death can touch"

"Freshman. Tons and tons of fresh men". Lydia leaned against a locker next to Allison.

"You mean fresh boys. Lydia, they're 14". Allison smiled at her friend as she put some things in her locker.

"Anita". Lydia called out to the girl who was on the other side of the hall, closing her locker. Anita turned to the strawberry blonde, surprised she was talking to her. They never held a conversation.

"I prefer men that are older". A smile tugged on her lips. Crossing her arms over her chest, leaning back against her locker.

Lydia gave her a smirk, pointing at her. "I like you". Lydia turned back to Allison; "Some are more mature than others".

"You know, it's okay to be single. Focus on yourself for a little while, work on becoming a better person. Right Anita?" Allison then turned to her.

Anita raised an eyebrow. Not knowing if the only reason the two were talking to her was because of the whole supernatural knowing club or something? Some freshman passed by and Anita looked to Allison.

"First off, ouch". Anita moved her head a bit. But not telling them that she was seeing Derek. "And second, why are you two talking to me?" Anita asked seriously.

"Well-uh". Allison was taken aback by her question.

"Because, you see ghosts and that makes you part of the group".  Lydia told her bluntly.

So, she was right.

Anita didn't say anything.  She wasn't sure if she liked that or not.  But nonetheless she nodded and headed to her first period.  Anita walked into the class where there were only a few people there since she was early.  She decided to take a seat in the fourth middle row.

Anita grabbed her notebook and pen out, writing some things down to get her brain working for class.  Soon enough the first bell rang and students started to file in.  Stiles entered the classroom with Scott, the two talking for a moment as they made their way over.

"Anita.  Same class".  Stiles smiled widely at her, taking a seat in front of her, Scott next to him.

"Oh, joy".  Anita said sarcastically, but smiled.

"How was your summer?  My dad is a bit bummed that you left.  I swear, his office is going to get messy again so maybe..."  Stiles started to ramble.

Scott leaned down to take his supplies out but stopped, as he smelled the air, furrowing his eyebrows he looked up at Anita, confused but didn't say anything, then looked to the front of the class.

Stiles turned back around when Allison and Lydia entered the classroom.  Anita watched the two walk in and was surprised how they all had one class together again.  Anita knew she was the only senior in the class but she didn't care, it was her last semester and she was ready for it to end.

Stiles gave Scott a thumbs up at his best friends words and then all cell phones started to ring.  Stiles turned around slightly to Anita.

"Still no phone?"  Stiles asked a bit shocked.

"I'm getting one later today.  Derek is helping me since I don't know what exactly to get or how to go about it".  Anita told him.

"'The Offing was barred by a black bank of clouds and the tranquil waterway leading to the utterly most of the earth flowed somber under an overcast sky, seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness'. This is the last line to the first book we are going to read. It is also the last text you will receive in this class. Phones off, everyone". Their new teacher instructed at the end.

Anita narrowed her eyes the whole time her English teacher talked.  She didn't know how she felt about her just yet.  Interesting first impression she had though.

Anita began to write in her notebook, following the directions on the whiteboard.

"Mr.  McCall?"

Anita watched as Scott packed his things and exited the classroom, Ms. Blake following him.  Once they exited, Stiles turned around to face Anita.

"What do you think it's about?"  Stiles asked her.

"Don't know.  Don't care".  Anita continued to write in the notebook, not bothering to look at him.

Stiles bounced his pen back and forth on his fingers before he turned to Lydia who was sitting beside him and started to whisper to her.

"No, my designer handbag.  Yes, my dog".

"Has it ever bitten you before?"

Anita's eyes widened  as she could hear the two having their conversation.  She was trying to concentrate and hearing their voices, mostly Stiles was starting to annoy her.  It was too early in the morning for this.

"Maybe it means something's coming.  Something bad".

"It was a deer, and a dog.  What's that thing you say about threes?"

"Leaves of three leave a be".  Anita spoke up, contributing to their conversation.

"What?"  Stiles looked to her.

"Once, twice-"

A crow banged into the window, causing blood to smear on it.  Anita watched Ms. Blake go over to the window and her eyes widened at the sight of crows coming closer.

"What is this, The Birds?"  Anita questioned, grabbing Stiles shoulder to get his attention.

They started to bang into the windows, making them break and fly into the class.  Students screaming as they started to shield themselves.

"Get down!  Everyone!"  Ms. Blake shouted.

Anita quickly slipped out of her chair and under her desk, covering her head.

"Get down!  Get down!"

Anita felt a crow pecking at her hair making her wince.  She grabbed a fallen book on the ground and easily whacked the crow off of her.  Anita shakily covered her arms over her head again and when it finally died down, she slowly moved her arms away.  She was still tucked in a ball, looking around at the destroyed classroom.

"You okay?"  Stiles asked, helping her up to her feet.

"Yeah".  Anita looked to Stiles and Lydia.  "But I can't wait till I graduate in December".

This was not going to be a normal school year.

~~~
Anita looked at the Hale House.  This was her first time seeing the place after all these years.  Anita winced a bit as she felt good energy but at the same time bad energy.  It was not a fun combo.
"Hey, you coming in?"  Stiles asked as he walked a bit by her.
"Yeah.  But I'm not touching anything".  She told and then followed behind him.
"We're here". Stiles called out when he entered the house, he turned his head to the side, Derek standing there with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Dear, god!"  Stiles jumped.
Anita stood a few feet behind Stiles as her eyes travelled around the house until her eyes stopped on the stairs.  Stiles pointed to Scott, going over to him in the next room.
"You don't have to be here".  Derek told Anita as he looked at her.
"I'm fine".  She nodded, trying to convince herself more than him.  She gave him a hidden smile before going over to Scott and Stiles
Derek flicked his eyes to red as he looked at Scott's arm.  "Yeah, I see it.  It's two bands, right?"
Scott nodded.
"What does it mean?"
"I don't know.  Uh, it's just something I traced with my fingers".  Scott leaned over and started to trace it on a very dusted table.
"Why is it so important to you?"  Derek asked.
"Do you know what the word tattoo means?"  Scott then asked.
"To mark something".  Stiles smiled brightly as he told Derek.
"Well, that's in Tahitian.  In Samoan, it means open wound.  I knew I wanted to get a tattoo when I turned 18.  I always wanted one.  I just decided to get it now it make it kinda a reward".  Scott explained.
"For what?"
"For not calling or texting Allison all summer.  Even when I really wanted too.  Even when it was hard sometimes.  I was trying to give her the space she wants".  Scott sighed.  "Goin' four months later, it still hurts.  It still feels like a, uh-"
"Like an opened wound".  Stiles finished for him.
"Yeah".
Derek moved a bit, grabbing a gas and a torch lighter.  "The pain is going to be like anything you've ever felt"
"Ah, that's great".  Stiles nodded.
Anita held back a laugh as she looked at Stiles already squirming.
"Do it".
Derek easily lit it.
"Oh!  That's a-that's a lot for me so I'm gonna take that as my cue".  Stiles began to walk away, pointing outside.  "I'll be-I'm just gonna wait outside".
Derek grabbed Stiles harshly causing him to make a noise.  "Nope.  You and Anita are going to help hold him down".  Derek shoved him back.
Anita grabbed one side of Scott's shoulder while Stiles got the other.
"Oh, my god".  Stiles looked at the flame as it got closer and then finally started to burn his skin.  Scott began to cry out, moving.
"Hold him".  Derek directed it to Stiles.
"Pull your weight Stiles".  Anita told him, holding Scott down harder.
After Scott passed out and woke up again him and Stiles started to head out.  Derek was making sure Isaac was alright and Anita was in the kitchen as she could hear good memories in her ears of her and Cora laughing.
That was one thing she liked.  When a memory was so strong she didn't need to touch a wall or any type of thing.  She just had to concentrate on it.
"You painted the door.  Why'd you paint the door?"  Scott asked Derek.
"Go home, Scott".
"Why only one side?"  Scott asked again.
Anita stepped out of the kitchen. Looking to the painted door and then to Derek.  She knew why the door was painted and she had a feeling Scott was going to find out.  Scott flicked his claws out and scratched the paint off the door.
"Scott".  Derek walked over towards him and then crossed his arms over his chest, looking away from the symbol for a moment.
"The birds at school, the deer last night.  Just like the night I got trampled by the deer when I got bit by the alpha.  How many are there?"
Derek breathed out, looking to Scott.  "A pack of 'em.  An alpha pack".
"All of them?  How does that even work?"  Stiles asked clearly confused.
"I hear there some kind of a leader.  He's called Deucalion.  We know they have Boyd and Erica.  Peter, Isaac, and I have been looking for them for the past four months".  Derek explained.
"Let's say you find them.  How do you deal with an alpha pack?"  Scott stepped closer to Derek.
"With all the help I can get".
"Where is she?"  Isaac's voice made them look at him.  "Where's the girl?"
"What girl?"
~~~

It was only a few minutes after Scott and Stiles left.  Anita was talking to Isaac, more like telling him to rest and that they would find whoever it was he was asking for.

"Here".  Derek handed a phone out for Anita.

"You went?" Anita asked looking from the phone to Derek before grabbing it from his hand.

"Thought I'd save you the trip". Derek smiled to her. "I already put my number in there for you".

"Thank you". Anita smiled widely as she looked at it. "You'll have to help me out later with it. I don't know where to start". Anita pressed some buttons on it. Derek chuckled at her comment, giving her a a few nods.

"I will".

Anita was messing around on the phone, walking down the hallway away from Derek and Isaac. She could hear the two talking but when she walked further away, she didn't hear them as well. Anita came to a stop as she looked at the floor a few feet away from her. It clearly had a large hole in it, she could see some of the basement through it even though it was replaced terribly with new planks.

Anita thought for a moment and she then placed her phone down on a nearby tall table, before she kneeled down on the ground. She hovered her hand over the covered hole and her head unintentionally winced to the side.

Anita breathed out before pulling her hand away. "Don't be stupid Anita". She scolded herself and stood up. She looked at the hole before her eyes slowly traveled to a figure that was sitting on the other side of the hole.  Anita looked at it with wide eyes and before she could react the unknown ghost grabbed Anita's wrist and slammed her hand to the hole.

Anita gasped as her head began to spin and images began to quickly come into her vision and then sound. It was so quick but she could see it so clearly. Once it was over, Anita quickly scrambled against a wall, her back to it as she gripped onto her head.

She let out a a few painful screams, shaking her head. "No, no, no, no, no". Anita cried out.

"Hey, hey". Derek was quick to her side, instantly pulling her curled up figure into him.  Anita let out a few more cries, her hands never leaving her head and her eyes shut.  She could still see it and she wanted it to go away.

"Anita, what did you see?"  Derek asked, knowing she had to see something from the fire.

"Clarice".  Anita cried out.  "Clarice!"  Anita cried again.

Derek looked down at her sadly and did the best he could do to comfort her.  He just held her tightly and rubbed her back soothingly.  Isaac stood close by but didn't say or do anything.  He winced every time Anita cried out.

Anita took in a big breath of air as she moved her hands from her head and gripped onto one of Derek's forearms.

"She died right here. It was bad. It was so bad". Anita started to cry out again when she finished out the last word.

**sorry I traumatize you Anita but it's for your character development**
