Chapter 16: In the Summertime

"Man plans and God laughs"

"Schools out for summer!  Schools out for-ever!"  Isaac sang terribly as he swung his arm over Anita.  Anita was quick and shrugged his arm off as she walked beside him.

Everyone was going crazy.  Teenagers were running around, papers being thrown everywhere.

"Hey!  Hey!  Clean that up!  Greenberg don't be stupid nobody wants to look at your failure of papers".  Coach Finstocks voice sounded loudly.

"This was a hell of a year".  Isaac said.

"You're telling me".  Anita walked down the stairs, finally getting out of the school.

"Summer!"  Some kid was hanging half way out of his friends car as it sped off by them.

"Is everyone always this crazy when summer starts?"  Anita raised an eyebrow, holding her books close to her chest.

"Basically".  Isaac nodded his head slowly than looked to Anita, grabbing her books from her and tossing them in the trash can.

Anita shook her head at Isaac but trailed after him down the street then stopped once they got to Derek's Camaro.  Derek leaned over and opened the door.

"Isaac.  Back".  Derek said sternly with his sunglasses on.

"Yeah.  Yeah.  Figures".  Isaac grumbled, making his way to the back of the car.

"Anita".  Derek greeted, his mood instantly changing when he looked at her.

"Hi".  Anita smiled, sitting down and then closed the door.

"When do you start your job?"  Isaac spoke from the back.

"You got a job?"  Derek asked as he drove away from the chaos of a school.

"Kinda".  Anita nodded her head.  "Sheriff Stilinski actually needed some help with organizing files and other things. He said his office is a mess. I really couldn't find a job but he said he'd pay me some cash when I'm in and helping". Anita explained as she pulled down the visor, her eyes squinting a bit from the sun.

"First thing I'm buying is sunglasses". Anita told the two.

"I thought it was a phone?" Isaac asked cheekily.

"That is a must". Anita groaned.

"You're fine with going back to the station?" Derek asked, looking at her for a moment before back at the road.

"Not really. But Sheriff Stilinski said he will start it out slow with me. Basically baby steps". She smiled with a nod, putting her hand up to block the sun.  She felt like her eyes were about to pour out of their eye sockets.

"Do you have an extra pair of sunglasses for the car ride?"  Anita asked.

"Check the center console".  Derek told her.

Anita looked down and reached towards the center console, the same time as Derek.  Their hands brushing on one another for a moment before they both pulled their hands back.

"Sorry".  Anita apologized in a low voice.

Derek didn't say anything as he opened up the center console and pulled out a pair of sunglasses.

"Thank you".  Anita gently took them, putting them on.

"Can we get ice cream?" Isaac asked.

Derek looked in the revere mirror to stare at Isaac. Even though Isaac couldn't see Derek's eyes. He knew it was a glare. Anita even turned back and gave Isaac a look. He was like a child.

"No". Derek grumbled.

Anita thought for a moment and maybe ice cream wasn't a bad idea.  It was hot out and she hasn't had it in awhile.  "I could actually go for a chocolate malt".  Anita nodded.

"There's a Frosty place a few blocks..."  Derek started then trailed off when he made a quick turn.

Isaac in the back seat sat with his mouth hung open.  He couldn't believe what he was hearing.  But then that open mouth closed and turned into a smile.

The rest of the car ride was silent.  Derek pulled up to the parking lot and parked in an empty spot.

Anita got out, holding the door open as Isaac moved the seat up and climbed out, stumbling a bit as his foot got caught on the seat.

Anita held back a laugh then popped her head back in the car to look at Derek.  "Want anything?  Isaac is buying".

"Heyyyy".  Isaac whined from behind her.

"I'm good".  Derek reassured her, taking off his sunglasses but Anita only shook her head.  He's driving.  He deserved some ice cream.

"Swirl?"  Anita asked, not knowing if it was still his favorite.

"Swirl".  Derek smiled with a nod.

Anita headed inside while Isaac shut the door and leaned in the window.

"She may be oblivious but you are so whipped".  Isaac laughed.

Derek only flashed his red eyes at Isaac.

"Got it".  Isaac retreated out of the window quickly. Isaac hurried inside the place, almost running into Anita who was looking at the menu.

"Do you know what you're getting?" Anita asked him.

"Cookie dough". Isaac pulled out his wallet as they stepped forward in line. Isaac ruffled his hair before looking at Anita again.

"Hey, uh. I'm actually going to be gone majority of summer". Isaac admitted.

"Oh". Anita was clearly sad from that. Isaac was her one other friend and at this point he was basically her best friend, besides Simon of course.

"I just need to get out for a bit. You know". Isaac looked at her with a 'sorry' look.

Anita nodded her head. "I get it". She gave him a smile. "I'll miss you".

Isaac smiled at that. "Me too. Now, I'll pay for your ice cream in apology for almost killing you that day in lab". Isaac joked, making Anita whack his arm with a snort.

"You're paying for Derek's too because I have no money". Anita smiled widely.

Isaac sighed but shook his head happily. "Next time you get the ice cream".

Anita hummed in amusement. "We'll see".

Anita looked at the Beacon Hills Animal Clinic sign.  She was standing out there for a good few minutes.  She tapped her fingers on her leg, thinking.  Soon, she decided to go inside.

Anita opened up the door and stepped in, the bell ringing as she looked around the clinic as it was empty for only a moment.

"Hello.  How can I help you?"  Dr. Deaton greeted as he entered the room.

"Hi". Anita said a bit nervously. "I'm Anita Lockett, I'm a friend-I know Scott McCall". Anita quickly fixed her wording. "I was hoping you could help me". Anita finished. She didn't know who exactly this guy was. Scott mentioned that he knew about the supernatural and has been very helpful in the past, but this man didn't know her.

"Hello, Anita". Dr. Deaton smiled warmly to her. "Scott has told me about you. Why don't you come in the back". He gestured for her to follow.

"Don't know if that's a bad thing". Anita was shocked that Scott spoke about her to Deaton. Once they entered the back she looked around.

Yeah.  This was not an ordinary animal clinic.

"You want to know what you are.  Right?"  Deaton asked.  Having a feeling that's why she came.

"I do, but...I'm afraid it's going to be a label.  I don't want it to define me.  I just want to be Anita".  Anita ran her hand up and down her arm in a comforting way.

"It doesn't have to define you Anita.  You get to choose who you want to be, not who you were born as".  Deaton explained.  Anita took in his words and nodded, smiling a bit.

"So, does this mean you know what I am?"  Anita asked.

"I am 99% sure.  I just need you to test a theory for me.  If it works, it will sting".  Deaton warned as he went over to a jar and opened it, taking out a purple flower.

Anita nodded as she held her hand out, her open palm, facing upward.  Deaton held the purple flower above her open palm before looking at her.  "Ready?"  Deaton asked and she nodded.

Deaton dropped the purple flower on her hand.  As soon as it touched, Anita felt a burning feeling before she quickly shook it off her, hissing from the pain.  Anita looked at her hand and saw a faint red mark where the flower used to be.

"What was that?"  Anita asked him.

"Vervain...and that confirms my theory.  You're a Wisp".  Deaton smiled to her.

"A what?"  Anita asked, her eyebrows knitting in confusion.

"A Wisp.  Which is rare. Most people that are Wisps don't even know that's what they are due to thinking they are a medium".  Deaton explained.

"Not only can you communicate and see ghosts, but when there's strong energy in certain areas, negative or bad.  You can feel it. Not only that, but you're also sensitive. Such as touching strong energy places, like a wall or even an object can take you back where you see and hear the experience.  Be careful with this, especially when it is bad energy.  It can drain you more emotionally than physically".  Deaton continued to explain.

Anita nodded. It was all making sense. For most of her life she thought she was a medium, but it turned out she's more than that.

"You can also summon spirits that have crossed over, but you can only do it for a purpose.  You can't summon them for no reason.  That's important to remember".  He pointed to her and Anita nodded.

"And lastly, vervain.  Poisonous to you.  Large doses can kill you and since you don't heal like werewolves, it can cause problems, especially if you get it in your blood stream".

"I thought vervain was for vampires?"  Anita questioned.

"Vampires aren't real". Deaton smiled to her.

"Weird and also disappointing.  I wanted a Salvatore as a bodyguard".  Anita laughed to herself. Now that she knew what she was, the only thing on her mind was that she had to tell Derek about the new information about her.
