Twenty Three
Finishing touches on the nursery were underway. Stevie had been washing and folding all of the little baby clothes their son would wear, hanging up the most special pieces in the wardrobe. Lindsey had been out in the garage, working on a special project of his own that he deemed top secret, leaving Stevie inside. Vanessa had been moping, she could hear the drag of her boots upstairs in the attic and her sobs grew loud at times. She no longer had her beloved mirror to replay all of the happy memories she had with Fletcher, now left with the pain of her broken heart once more.
Stevie went to start another load of laundry, retrieving even more tiny clothes from the dryer. She was tired, and hungry but was determined to finish by the time Lindsey came back inside for lunch.
"Stevie?" Vanessa said standing in front of her friend, to which no answer came "Stevie? Please?" She tried again but still Stevie didn't acknowledge her, eventually Stevie jumped, seeing the woman suddenly appear
"Oh my god Vanessa, are you trying to give me early labour?" She laughed, but stopped when Vanessa's chin quivered
"What's the matter?"
"You couldn't hear me..."
"What do you mean?"
"I've just been calling your name infront of you, and you didn't answer."
"I didn't see or hear you..." Stevie said confused
"Stevie, it's the mirror, the longer it's away, the longer it takes for me to communicate with you..." she said sadly
"I will pay closer attention"
"That won't help! Nothing will!" Vanessa shouted and Stevie winced.
"I need you to go" Stevie said, and Vanessa's eyes saddened. She vanished from sight, feeling defeated.
Lindsey came back into the house feeling hungry himself, so he knew his wife must be. He went about looking at the supplies he had in the cabinets and the fridge, trying to decide if he should make something quick or order in. He went upstairs to ask Stevie but she was busy, absorbed in her own work and chose not to bother her.
Stevie was crying, regretting getting upset with Vanessa but every ache and pain scared her and Vanessa was becoming more unhinged. One time the pains got so bad she thought she was losing her son. She couldn't take any more risks. In her quiet, she heard a strange laugh. A shadow passed her line of sight but Stevie paid no mind. She was at peace with the ghosts here, well, most of them. She hummed to herself, the baby boy within her more active than usual. She stood still a moment, stretching her back out and really focusing on these movements she was feeling.
"Is someone excited?" she asked, giggling. She rubbed large circles over her belly when suddenly she saw the darkening of a shadow overheard.
"Die!" she heard in a soft scratching voice, just as she moved out of the shadow and into the light.
Lindsey ran into the room, hearing a scream and a crash. Right beside a rather shaken up Stevie was the wardrobe that had some how tipped over despite the restraints.
"What the hell!" Lindsey rushed to Stevie, checking her all over "Are you okay? Do you hurt anywhere?"
"No..." she said still staring at the fallen wardrobe
"Was this her?" Lindsey asked with an anger to his tone
"Her name is Vanessa, and no it wasn't her, she would never do this!"
"Secured wardrobes do not just fall Stevie."
"It wasn't her, Lindsey we need that mirror back...bad things have happened since you threw it out." Stevie said, finally bursting into tears
"Shhhh...." he soothed. "Baby, it's gone. Someone took it, how am I supposed to get it back."
"I don't know" she sobbed.
"We need to get out of this place, Steph. I know you have a weird little connection with it but that giant thing could have killed you and our son. You collapsed in the front yard, you have have mysterious illnesses and pain. You almost fell down the stairs...if I hadn't caught you--"
"You didn't catch me" Stevie said angrily. "Vanessa did. She helped us and we need to help her, it's the only way, but we need to scour the city for that mirror. We can put up flyers or something"
"People paper the town for lost dogs or missing children, not for some stupid antique"
"It's not stupid!" Stevie shouted. She held her stomach, wincing.
"Please calm down."
"No!" she said. "It's Vanessa. I told you that we are connected. She is hurting too."
"What am I supposed to do about it?"
"Go find the fucking mirror!" She gritted her teeth
"I'll see what I can do but I'm not promising anything!" He said before kissing her and checking her over once more before leaving to have a look for the mirror
"Vanessa?" Stevie called out, "Vanessa?" She tried again but the ghost did not appear
Vanessa was sat in the attic crying, she could hear Stevie calling her but she didn't want to see her right now, she was upset at being told to go, so Vanessa ignored Stevie's calls
"Vanessa please, I'm sorry." She tried but still no one appeared before her, she just prayed that Lindsey would find the mirror in time.
"Vanessa please! You want to meet him don't you? You want to see my little boy..." she breathed through the pain
"I do..."
"Then please, save him like only you can!" She begged
Vanessa crouched down onto the floor with Stevie, holding each side of her large bump, threading her energy through to Stevie
"Thank you..." Stevie cried as the pain dwindled down, eventually turning to nothing, Stevie looked at Vanessa who was half laying on the floor, obviously in a lot of pain and exhaustion
"What's wrong?!"
"Without the mirror it takes all of my energy doing that...it takes it and I don't get it back..." she said weakly
"We have to get that mirror" Stevie said. "Don't fade, I know we will find it"
"Really?"
"Yes of course" Stevie lied, not sure whether that was the truth or not. "Rest, Vanessa. I will check on you soon." Vanessa nodded, vanishing into thin air. Stevie carefully came down the stairs, latching them back up. There was a faint knock on the door and she hurried to answer it. "Babe, do you need help?" Stevie asked, thinking it was Lindsey. She yanked the door open to find no one but the mirror laid against the side of the house on the porch. If she weren't shocked enough, Lindsey pulled into the driveway, shaking his head.
"Stephanie, I'm sorry" he called, jogging up the front walk.
"Lindsey...you...?"
"Stevie, what is this doing here? You said it was taken."
"It was"
"Then what is it doing here? Were you trying to get back at me for not believing you?!" Lindsey began to get irritated.
"How could I?!" Stevie said defensively. "Do you honestly think I could do anything? I'm eight months pregnant, I'm more apt to go into labor than to run around hiding this fucking mirror from you!"
"Okay, okay." Lindsey said, holding up his hands. "Are you feeling better?"
"After yelling at you, yeah, a little."
He chuckled. "No, I meant it seemed like you were in a lot of pain."
"I'm much better"
"And the baby?"
"He's fine"
"That's amazing, I actually wanted to talk to you about him."
"Oh?"
"Well, as I was driving, his name came to me. Your hippie-ness has finally rubbed off on me."
"Umm my 'hippie-ness' is amazing thank you!" She chuckled and he kissed her quickly
"It is baby, anyway, for a name I really loved this, and I hope you do too!"
"Okay, hit me!"
"Noah Christopher Buckingham..." he waited for a response
"Oh my god! I absolutely love it Lindsey! I'm sticking with that name now, I'm in love! Our little Noah!" She smiled rubbing her belly, Noah moving around, telling her he liked it too
"Good! Right, let's get your mirror back in the attic!" He said lifting it and carrying it through the house, carefully taking it into the attic, he placed it in exactly the same place that he'd taken it from, both he and Stevie suddenly felt a huge amount of energy serge through the house.
Vanessa suddenly appeared, she looked more human now that ghost, she looked like she did when the mirror was in the house before
"You got it back! Oh thank you so much!" Vanessa cried, quickly sitting infront of the mirror and happily starting to watch all her memories come back to life. Stevie and Lindsey leaving her be, walking through to the kitchen, Lindsey leaned against the counter
"I wonder where that came from..." he said puzzled
"I don't know, but I owe whoever it was a great deal!" She smiled, but she herself was also puzzled, who did bring the mirror back?
