Seventeen

It had been a few days since Lindsey had brought Stevie her car, she'd been out in it every single day, shopping, scenic drives, she loved it, but today it was pouring with rain, so she decided that she would read in the sunroom, taking her tea in there also

"Oh no, the sun must have got to you!" She said out loud to the worse for wear looking plants, filling up a watering can and watering the greenery, whistling a tune something caught her eye, jumping slightly as she saw a clone to her husband standing staring out the window

"F-Fletcher...?" Stevie asked hesitantly, approaching him

"How do you know my name?" He said but not taking his eyes away from the garden

"I see Vanessa all the time...she talks about you."

"Vanessa" he said. "No, you must be mistaken"

"I'm not, I..."

"I don't want to speak about her." he said sternly.

"Why?" Stevie reaches out to touch his shoulder but drops his hand, knowing she can't make contact. He turns his head to look at her and he smiles briefly. His eyes move back to the windows, watching something in the distance.

"I look like her, don't I?" He doesn't answer. "You miss her."

"Of course I do. I didn't know when I said goodbye that...that it was really goodbye."

"Look at me" Stevie said and he shook his head. "Look at me." He does so slowly. "I want to help you and I want my husband to help you too"

"He's never seen me. I know he looks like me. You're us. You're even with child..."

"Is that why you can't look at me for more than five seconds?"

"I never even got to look at my child's face."

"Neither did she." Stevie said.

"What, what do you mean? Do you mean our baby didn't make it?"

"Vanessa didn't make it. She died when she was still carrying your child."

Fletcher looked away from her, clearly upset. "Did she die by her own hand?"

"I...I don't know."

Fletcher remained quiet for several moments, changing the subject when he finally spoke. "The garden looks so different now. An elegant pool where the Castleby pond once lay..."

"Mm" Stevie said. "That little girl seems to love it out there. Once, I saw her playing with a little dog."

"You can see her too?" Stevie nodded. "She's my baby sister, Ramona."

"Why is she so young?" Stevie asked, already knowing the answer

"She died...in the pond, she was playing and I was supposed to be watching her, but I became distracted...I tried so hard to save her, but she was already gone..." Stevie could see tears running down his face

"It wasn't your fault..."

"Then who's was it? I was the one supposed to be watching! I lost everything so fast..."

"I understand, but you have to show yourself to my husband, because if you can connect with him, I can connect you with Vanessa, and the two of you and Ramona can be together!"

"If she did it by her own hand, I want nothing to do with her!" He said sternly

"How dare you! You haven't seen her, she's a mess! She's in pain every single day of her existence, she needs you to grieve with her!" Stevie became just as stern

"I don't want to talk about this anymore" he said. He disappeared as his last word was spoken and Stevie sighed.

"Good job, Stevie. You pissed off the man Vanessa needs you to connect with" she said to herself. She realized she couldn't possibly read now, her tea had gone cold so she finished her watering and left the sunroom.

Lindsey called some time in the afternoon to tell her he would be working late and not to wait up for him. She told him how much she loved him, updated him on how she was feeling and all the movements their little guy was making in there. Lindsey told her she had to go and she blew him a kiss through the phone lines. "Rub the belly for me and tell him Daddy will be home soon."

"I will"

"Goodbye."

"Goodbye, angel"

She hung up the phone, made herself a snack and went to watch tv. The house was peaceful for once, Stevie eventually falling asleep on the couch.

She woke up a little while later, having a strong pull to the attic, standing from her seat she stretched, the baby doing a little kick like he was stretching too

"Let's go find Vanessa hmm baby?" She rubbed her belly and made her way up the stairs, pulling the small set out and going into the attic

Stevie saw Vanessa on the floor, watching the mirror with a smile on her face, walking over to her she watched the mirror too, another beautiful memory playing out, this time they were in bed together, innocently cuddling, Stevie realised Fletchers wife must of been away

"I wanted to ask you something." Fletcher said with his arm around Vanessa

"Anything!"

"I know technically I'm already married to Josephine...but please, would you do me the honour of becoming my wife?" He asked seriously looking into Vanessa's eyes, which were sparking with tears

"You know I will...I know it won't be for a long time yet, but yes, I'll be your wife..." she kissed him passionately.

Stevie watched, a hand to her chest. She could feel the love they had for each other. What they had didn't feel wrong at all, Stevie even forgetting Fletcher had been married to Vanessa's sister until he had mentioned it.

"You're a beautiful couple"

"Thank you" Vanessa wept. "He never did make good on that promise"

"I saw him"

Vanessa sat up fully, looking at her. "Fletcher? You saw him?"

"He was watching Ramona play in the yard from the sunroom. He seemed irritated, angry. I had to pry answers out of him about anything."

"Did he mention me?" Stevie nodded. "Well?"

"He didn't realize that you had passed after he did."

"He didn't know I was here?"

"No"

"Then I should try to go to him. You let me out of the mirror, I'm free to roam" Stevie held her hand up. "Vanessa, I need to know how you went? Did you...?"

"No, I didn't kill myself. Everyone says I did and that's a damned lie!" she shouted and Stevie winced.

"Stop it!" Stevie said, clutching her stomach.

"I'm sorry" Vanessa placed her hand over Stevie's belly and the pain went away as usual. "It upsets me. My parents...they were so disappointed in my actions in the way I lived and the way I...died"

"So...how did it happen? He wants to know."
