Nineteen
For the next couple of months, Stevie and Lindsey worked hard to turn their house into a home. Every night after work, Lindsey helped Stevie with the nursery. The walls in that room were already a beautiful blue and Lindsey was happy his pregnant wife wouldn't have to breathe in those fumes. The crib and rocker Stevie ordered would be delivered tomorrow morning. It was a Saturday so he would be there to help and instruct where the furniture would go, rather than have Stevie there alone.
It was late in the evening when Stevie had woken up from a nap. She was growing increasingly tired and her aches and pains kept her up at night.
Vanessa stood at her bedside, and Stevie smiled, the ghost now becoming a comfort.
"How are we feeling?" Vanessa asked.
"Better than before."
"Those awful contractions!"
"Braxton-Hicks. They're just practice for the real thing." Vanessa nodded her understanding. "Is something wrong?"
"I still can't find Fletcher."
"I know, and I'm trying to get him to understand"
"What if we are never reunited?" Vanessa asked sadly.
"You will be. Have faith."
"Steph?" Lindsey called.
"Yes, honey!"
Vanessa disappeared when Lindsey entered the room.
"I didn't know you were awake. I thought I was hearing things! Were you talking to yourself?"
"No, I'm not completely crazy yet, Lindsey"
"Didn't you say you're only crazy if you answer yourself?"
"Touché. So what did you come up here for, babe?"
"Wanna come see what I've done with the nursery so far?"
"Oh! Yes I would love to!" She carefully hopped out of bed and waddled to the nursery with Lindsey, entering and seeing how he'd painted it
"Oh Lindsey it's beautiful!" She said looking at the baby blue walls with little yellow ducks on them
"Thank you! I'm so happy with it, I hope he'll love it!"
"Oh he's going to adore it! I'm so proud of you, now come and get some sleep, you've been working all day!" She rubbed his back as he agreed, leaving the nursery and turning the light off, pulling the door closed behind him
"God you're right I am tired! He said yawning, quickly getting into his night clothes and snuggling into bed with his wife, kissing her and the baby goodnight
Vanessa appeared at the side of the bed, touching his face, rubbing her fingers through his curls. She made sure Stevie was asleep and she kissed Lindsey's cheek. Lindsey stirred, turning over in bed. Vanessa touched his back, pressing his lips to his neck.
"Mmmm...baby" Lindsey groaned. Vanessa's eyes brightened as she dared to kiss him again. He turned over again and she sighed. He looked like Fletcher, it was hard to resist him, but she did love Stevie and the baby so much...she must tread lightly. Vanessa disappeared to the safety of her mirror, watching memories flow past her.
Lindsey's eyes fluttered open, laying them on his wife "What the..." he was so confused, he'd felt her lips on the back of his neck, but she was in front of him, and snoring...he must of been dreaming he said to himself
Upstairs in the attic Vanessa was crying for her lover, it had been months since Stevie had seen him, what if he was gone forever? What if she'd never get to be reunited with him
"Fletcher, please my love...I need you..." she sobbed, clutching her stomach, hoping he'd appear somewhere, but he didn't, there was nothing
The next morning, Lindsey waited for the delivery men. Stevie got up, groggily making coffee for her husband and a cup of tea for herself. Vanessa appeared, sobbing loudly, startling the tea cup out of Stevie's hand.
"Honey, I appreciate you not causing me too much pain anymore, especially at almost eight months pregnant but can you please try not to scare the bejeesus out of me?"
"I'm sorry" the ghost sobbed
"Please come to the sitting room" Stevie said and Lindsey watched her carefully, confused about who she was talking to.
"What's wrong V?" Stevie asked sitting on the sofa, concerned
"I can't find Fletcher...what if he doesn't love me anymore?"
"Of course he does! He's just a stubborn man, who won't listen to anyone! Lindsey is the same sometimes." She tried to smile comfortingly but Vanessa cried even more
"What's the matter?"
"I...I...I kissed Lindsey..." she sobbed
"What do you mean, you kissed Lindsey?"
"On his neck, when he was sleeping..." Stevie's face changed and to be honest, she wasn't sure how to feel. She was no threat to her, she was t even alive but to have another woman all over her husband, especially while in her pregnant, hormonal and sometimes insecure state, upset her. Before she could think of anything to say, and with tears stinging her eyes, Lindsey called for her. She put down her tea cup and rushed away from the offending specter as quickly as she could.
"Yes, darling?" Stevie asked, following him up the stairs. "Can you slow down?" Stevie was breathless as she practically chased him down the hall.
"Who or whatever you're talking to, it needs to stop, you're freaking me out!"
"Why? Do you finally believe me?"
"I...I don't know but whatever it is, I don't like it."
"You know as well as I do that there are things in this house!"
"I do not! There is nothing here Stephanie!" He crossed his arms
"There is! What about the pool?"
"Trick of the water that's all!"
"God you are such a stubborn bastard!" Her hands went straight to her hips
"I'm not buying into all this Mumbo jumbo bullshit!"
"I seriously hope you come face to face with one soon so I can tell you I told you so!"
"Not gonna happen Stephanie." He said in a sing song manner
"Mark my words, Lindsey Buckingham, something is going to change your mind."
"Well it sure as hell isn't going to be your or one of your little ghost buddies!" Offended, Stevie turned and hurried back down the stairs. "Oh come on Steph!" he called down the stairs. He followed her.
"Please don't go running after me. You said your piece and I need to be alone." She turned on the stairs.
"The furniture for the nursery is here, baby, I want you to tell me where to move it. I want to know your vision."
"How can you trust my vision when you believe I'm seeing things?"
"You know what I mean. Don't twist my words."
"There is nothing to twist. I could repeat verbatim what you just said to me about my 'ghost buddies' and my 'silly hallucinations'!"
"Calm down! Think of that baby you're carrying!"
"How dare you!" she growled, forcing Lindsey to walk back up the stairs backward.
"Stephanie..."
"Don't you dare say I need to think of this baby. You and I both know I invest every thought and dream into our son!" Stevie began to cry, overcome with emotion. He walked toward her, trying to hold her against him but she took a step back. Her foot came off the stair and before she knew it, she was falling. Lindsey's face was one of sheer terror, unable to reach her.
Vanessa felt a sense of panic within her, her form dissipating in the attic and manifesting on the first landing of the tall staircase. She stood behind Stevie, and prayed to whatever power was in control, catching her mid fall. Stevie gasped and Lindsey ran toward her, grabbing her and pulling her into his chest where they both became overcome with emotion. Stevie instantly forgave Vanessa, whispering a soft thank you through her tears.
"Don't thank me" Lindsey said in response. "I'm just glad you're safe"
