Forty
Stevie shut herself in the nursery, still getting strange pains as she paced with her son. He was silently sleeping in her arms and she couldn't dare let him out of her sight. Lindsey waited outside the door for her, knowing the way he approached her before wasn't the best. He heard her crying still and it broke his heart. She needed him, she was worried sick, and he treated her so badly. Of course, he was scared too but that was no excuse. He sighed, knocking on the door. There was no answer.
"Stephanie, sweetheart..."
"Go" she said softly.
"Baby, I'm sorry. You know I love you but I felt the same as you did. Josephine tricked you and I know that scared you...I don't want anything to happen to either of you..or rather, all three of you. How are you feeling?"
Stevie stopped pacing, feeling the pains through her belly. "I hurt" she wept.
"You hurt? Physically or..."
"In every way."
"Open the door, baby. Let me see you."
Stevie carefully opened the door and Lindsey smiled sadly at the scene before him. She stood there with tears falling down her cheeks, eyes red and puffy. She had their son still in her arms and she was holding onto him for dear life.
"Stevie, he needs to breathe, baby..." He moved to her and loosened her arm around Noah
"I can't lose him again..."
"Stevie, he wasn't lost to start with, you were just worried, and that's understandable! So was I!"
"Vanessa...she's gone Lindsey..."
"Gone where?"
"There was so much blood...and she couldn't keep her eyes open, then Fletcher stroked her cheek and they were both gone
"Oh my god..." Lindsey said, he couldn't imagine what Fletcher was feeling right now
"Linds, the last thing she heard me say to her was I had to find my son, because he was real and more important...she'd begged me to hold her hand..." she couldn't help but cry, placing her cheek onto Noah's head
"Honey, she understands your panic. You thought you baby boy was missing."
"But she needed me and I left her!" Stevie spoke through gritted teeth, angry at herself and Lindsey for rationalizing her actions. She pushed past him, baby still in her arms.
"Where are you going? You need to calm down."
"She's my friend."
"I know, and that's wonderful but you told me you're in pain and I need to know where"
"Where do you think?"
"Oh, Stevie. We need to get you back to the doctor then. We love this baby and want them to be safe, don't we?"
"Of course we do but I need to--"
"Don't go up there" he said, having followed her to the drop down stairs.
"I need to see if she's up there"
"If she's gone, she's gone. Plus, you're holding a baby, how are you supposed to get them down." He pointed toward the latch.
"Will you...please?" she asked sadly and he sighed.
"Fine, just know I don't like this idea."
"I know"
Walking into the attic she called out, finding Fletcher sat on the floor, his hands and shirt covered in blood
"Fletch..." Stevie said, kneeling in front of him
"She's gone, they both are." He said wiping his nose with the back of his hand
"No, they can't be..." Stevie cried
"She closed her eyes and she just vanished from my arms."
"Fletch...I'm so so sorry..."
"You're right, I shouldn't have left her alone, I guess I should have learned with Ramona." He brought his knees up and rested his head there
"No Fletcher, I shouldn't of said that to you. I'm so sorry."
"Doesn't matter, it's done now, I've lost her and I've lost my baby. Josephine won."
Suddenly Stevie saw the mirror glowing slightly, then Vanessa appeared, laying on the bed, her hand draped across her middle
"Step inside" she said softly.
"I..I can't..." Stevie said.
"She invited you" Lindsey said, nudging her forward. "Let me hold the baby. Go ahead" Fletcher looked up, wiping his eyes.
She was noticeably less round and Stevie began to cry again.
"It's okay" Vanessa said. Stevie moved toward the mirror and turned to look at Lindsey for reassurance. He nodded and she extended a hand through the mirror. Vanessa immediately grabbed it and allowed her to step inside. Vanessa lay in bed, a bassinet by her side.
"How are you...considering?" Stevie asked softly.
"How are you?" Vanessa asked.
"Please, you first..."
"Better" Vanessa said. "She's here, and lovely. Looks just like daddy."
Stevie peered into the bassinet and saw a dark haired little girl asleep tucked under a soft white blanket. "Oh, Vanessa! She's..." She covered her mouth with her hand, unable to speak. "When Fletcher said you'd gone and the baby..."
"I've learned that I gather strength inside the mirror. I can come here for healing. I was hemorrhaging and I was scared...I retreated here, to our sanctuary. Please, bring Fletcher and the others. Tell them everything is alright."
Stevie smiled and nodded, stepping back out the mirror into the attic of her house
"Is she alright? I don't understand." Fletcher said
"She's fine, she hemorrhaged, and the mirror gives her strength so she had to recover there. She wants me to bring you all back!"
Stevie took Noah from Lindsey and pulled everyone into the mirror, Fletcher sobbed as he saw his baby for the first time
"She's beautiful, I'm so proud of you baby!" He said to Vanessa, kissing her softly
"Sorry I scared you...I wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for the mirror. I had no choice but to come here"
Stevie looked into the bassinet and touched the baby's hand, expecting it to go straight through, but she felt soft skin under her finger tips, she smiled before taking Noah over to the bed
"Ness?" Stevie said and Vanessa looked at her puzzled
"I know you've wanted to do this for a long time..." she placed Noah into Vanessa's arms, where he was comfortably held
"Oh my goodness, I'm really holding him, I can feel him!" She cried, grabbing Stevie's hand, feeling her best friend for the first time.
