Part Two
Will had been cursed with rebirth. After his death, he was reborn as a lovely baby in a small town far away from his original home. He died, lived, died again, lived again. For hundreds of years he was reborn with a different face, body and personality. He no longer had any memory of his first life, just a recurrent dream of a witch cursing him and the girl he thought he loved. Every morning he woke up shivering with fear, even in the middle of the summer when there was no reason to be cold, and whispered the same two words over and over again.
Ghost Girl.
For one last Will had been reborn in a town near a beautiful yet lonely and dark beach. His father never let him see the beach, but one night after a stressful day he snuck out, note pad and pencil in hand, to the mysterious beach.
He arrived to the sight of a weird light wandering the beach. Most people had told him the Ghost Girl. No one had ever seen her face, the old people in town said that if you looked directly in the light they would be blinded, but Will felt no fear. He looked at the girl and saw her face. He knew it was familiar, but didn't know from where. In his dreams, the girl he loved didn't have a face or a voice, just a heart so dark it could've been rotten, but it also had a light in it. A light no one saw, regardless of its brightness.
Will saw the ghost's face and memorized it before it turned "invisible" again. It was beautiful in a painful kind of way. He could see sadness behind her eyes. He couldn't really see what color they were, but he could see they were hurt. He could also see that under her emotionless face there lay a scared person. He could read her so easily; she was distant but so open. How could people be so scared of such a inoffensive creature?
As he thought, the sudden want of touching her hair took over him. Will walked over to her, a smile appearing on his face with every step he took towards her. His hand worked without his permission, trusting forward and on her hair. His hand barely touched a strand of her golden locks when all of a sudden it went through her. She was light again.
Rosie had become used to being no one by now. She was used to the scared looks of people when they saw her, the parents steering their children away from her and the laughs of children when they threw things at her and they went through her. She understood why it happened, and she no longer cared. It had been hundreds of years already since the curse. Hundreds of years since she last saw her family. Hundreds of years since her life was taken from her, since she had been "Princess Rosie" and people bowed at the sight of her. Now, they just ran away. She had lost hope of Will finding her one hundred years ago. He had probably died years before anyway. And if he hadn't died and it was actually true love, wouldn't he have found her already? She had been foolish to think something good would come out of kissing an almost married man.
Rosie had not spent all those years completely alone, though. The Winter Witch had visited her once after the big war that destroyed the Kingdoms. She went to tell her that Ronald and Rose had escaped and died peacefully, together. That was the first and last time she spoke to someone, her voice probably didn't even work anymore.
One night when Rosie was exploring the beach once again she saw a young man sit down in the sand. He looked at her in the face (no one had ever done that) and she felt as if he was looking right through her. He wasn't scared, at least he didn't seem so. The sight of someone who didn't run from her was intriguing, but she thought it was just a one time thing. So wrong was the princess.
The next night Will came back at the same time. He tried to draw the girl in the light yet for some reason the more close attention he paid to her the more difficult it was for him to see her. It was like she was slowly fading.
Will kept going back to see Rosie for another night, and another, and another, just like their kisses had been so many nights ago.
As the number of nights that Will went to see her grew, so did her fondness for him. And as Rosie grew fonder for him it was easier for Will to see her face and draw it. With each passing night Will found his thought drifting to the beautiful girl covered in light.
Most of his life Will had felt useless, worthless. Like his life meant nothing. His current life wasn't bad at all, but to him it was some kind of curse that followed him through every life he'd had. But with each visit to see Rosie, his life started to make a little more sense. Maybe he didn't know it, but it was certain. The curse was breaking.
Every time Will visited Rosie her heart melted a little. It was no longer the piece of ice the Winter Witch had created, she could feel not just hopelessness but happiness and something she hadn't felt in a long time for someone other than her parents - love.
Spring arrived with its flowers, life and animals. The new season signified the coming of the townspeople to the Ghost Girl's beach. It also signified the most painful time of the year for Rosie and Will; Rosie's ghost-like appearance and memories intensified while Will's nightmares became more vivid and haunted him not only at night but in the daylight. Rosie had long lost track of the years she had been cursed, but one thing was certain: A new year was to be added.
It was on the third night of Spring when Will finally gathered enough courage to do more than draw the Ghost Girl. He prepared what he would say to her and repated it over and over again in his head. He planned to tell her about his nightmares, not so much so that she'd pity him but so that she understood that they both had baggage. Deep inside of him he knew that Rosie was somehow connected to his dreams. He didn't know how or why, he just knew.
The reborn prince walked in the direction of the immortal princess. The words he had practiced for so many nights left his mind and he was left a blank mind. No longer did he know what to say to the beautiful light girl. He'd approached her with the intention of saying everything he had wanted to say to her since he saw her, but instead all he did was stare at the girl in front of him like she was an alien.
Rosie was still a ball of light, but her face and hair were slowly becoming visible while the rest of her was still covered in light. She couldn't help but smile at the stranger in front of her. He didn't know her name yet, but he knew enough to make her smile. "Hello," she said. It was barely audible with the sound of their pounding hearts being so loud, but he heard her just fine.
Rosie showed him the hidden cave just like she'd shown him the hidden room so long ago. She knew this, but this time there was no harm in the gesture. No human had seen inside it for years; and for some reason the princess decided he was worthy enough to be the first.
The ghost and the reborn talked for hours about everything and nothing, and witch each laugh and smile they shared Rosie became more alive and Will was closer to death. Not because he was dying, but because with each passing minute with her the less chance he had of being reborn once again.
When the night ended and the morning began, both Will and Rosie had their dreaded goodbyes. Will left with a big smile that wouldn't leave his face while Rosie stayed behind and wondered how in the world this strange young man had stolen her heart in a word-full night.
Flashbacks of that night invaded her mind just as the realization hit her. Talking with Will he mentioned something about dreams and her seeming familiar. When the Winter Witch cursed her, Rosie made the assumption that Prince William and Princess Katie would marry and would end up dying together. What she hadn't remembered was that the Winter Witch had mentioned something about her and Will having to find each other, which meant that he, too, had been cursed.
Could it be, she wondered, that the nameless curious guy who was brave enough to approach her was Will?
A million possibilities crossed her mind, but none made sense. There was no logical way that Will could be alive after so many years. She thought and thought until finally an idea came to mind. It was a long shot, but it was worth a try.
Long ago, when she was a child and her heart was still pure, her mother told her that if she was ever in need of help she should stomp the ground twice, hit the wall once (not too hard) and whistle the song that in the four kingdoms was a call for help. Supposedly the Winter Witch would appear. Rosie had no idea if the witch had died along with Princess Katie, if she had changed host or she was somewhere hidden away in her true form, but she tried to call her anyway.
Rosie did the signal and waited. She sat on a log and sighed. After a few minutes of nothing happening she lost hope on getting answers. She had to hope that the mysterious guy was her Will and that they would somehow break the curse together.
Meanwhile, Will didn't know what to do with his growing feelings for Rosie. Is it possible, he thought, to fall for someone with no name who was most likely not human? He hoped it was, or else he was seriously screwed.
While Will got ready for another stressful day at work, Rosie was busy trying to comprehend the things the Winter Witch was telling her.
The Winter Witch, who was living free without a human host at the moment, patiently answered all of Rosie's questions. She told Rosie what Will's curse was and the luck Rosie had that the life they found each other on was where Will was given his original name. She also told her that the curse was finally breaking.
Rosie was scared to know what would happen as soon as the curse ended. She had lived so many years alone and cursed, how would she live while loving someone at the same time? A thousand more questions littered her mind, but the Winter Witch could only answer one more.
"Be brave, Rosie. Years ago an old and wise man prophesized you'd be a hero. Your parents thought you would be a war hero, but they couldn't have been more wrong. Save yourself from the fate I have given you, it's the only way. Nobody can break the curse but you. William will help you like you'll help him, but the rest you'll have to do it yourselves. Farewell, my princess, and good luck."
Rosie didn't know what to do. She was a princess, before the curse she had people to do everything for her. But now she would have to think and do something for herself. She swallowed her pride and wiped away her tears. As Rosie we waved the witch goodbye the witch said, "If you ever need help, don't hesitate to call me. But just the whistle next time." And with that, she left.
As night fell and Will made his way to the beach, Rosie was a ball of nerves. Her whole body tingled, which was a miracle itself considering she wasn't supposed to feel anything.
The Winter Witch's words bounced in her head, repeating themselves over and over again trying to make sense of themselves. How would she save herself? She had been a villain her whole life how would she become her own hero?
When Will arrived he was surprised to see how much Rosie had changed since the first night he saw her there. At first she seemed to be pure light, but that night? Well, let's just say she looked more like a human being that she had even before the curse.
Most nights it was like an invisible force separated them from one another. The night before Will made the choice to break the nonexistent wall between them. That night, however, it was Rosie who broke the distance, who broke the silence.
They sat together and talked. After an hour there was a pause and Rosie didn't hesitate to take advantage of it. "Will," she said, and it was all it took to mend his broken heart. Rosie put her hand forward for him to shake knowing well that his would go through. But it didn't. Not exactly. For a moment it was solid and the next it fell. It was magical while it lasted.
"I'm Rosie, nice to meet you."
Will didn't even get the chance to smile at the sound of her name before he felt the soft touch of his lips on hers. He felt something shift inside his stomach at the same time he felt something inside his head change.
Memories of past lives invaded his mind. He remembered his old names, friends and family that no longer lived. Evert death he'd experienced he could feel. With ever heartbreak he remembered going through his heart hurt again, but t didn't hurt as much as having full memory of that night. But as soon as it came, it was gone and he was sucked back into reality, the reality where he was finally kissing the woman he loved.
Kissing Will was like coming back to life for Rosie. Every second that passed with her lips on his, Rosie felt her body becoming firmer. She was no longer light but bones and flesh. She was herself again, curse free.
They pulled apart and smiled. They were finally together.
"So, Rosie, it's been a while together, huh?"
The ghost girl and the reborn prince walked together out of the cave into the beach, together, like it should be.
You might be wondering how I know their story so well. Well, who do you think cursed them?
