Part One
There's a light that lurks through the shadows. A light so mysterious no one is brave enough to get close. A light so scary yet so intriguing.
No one has ever seen the light up close; the legends say that whoever looks into face of the light will be blinded.
What most people don't know is that under the light lies a girl, a girl who is scared and is yelling for help. A girl who doesn't mean to scare.
Once upon a time the girl was cursed because of her vanity, lack of respect and humility. They said the curse would haunt her and everyone else until the day the sun dies, that is unless the curse is broken.
Years ago a mother and a father – queen and king – gave birth to a beautiful, strong baby with locks like the rays of sun. Her smile shined brightly the life of her parents and all of those who knew her.
Her mother believed that the princess would grow up to be a hero, that's what the prophecy said. But instead, the girl grew up to be a villain. She stole from the poor for fun, yelled at her father when he told her to calm down, didn't speak to her mother when she made a mistake, during her teachings to the small children of the kingdom she bragged about her life, she drank way too much and so much more.
One day, king Ronald and queen Rose prepared a ball in favor of their daughter's eighteenth birthday. They knew that something would go wrong as it always happened with the young princess, but the party was an old tradition they didn't dare change.
Everything was ready. The feast was cooked, the cake was baked, the guests were arriving and the ball room was decorated in a way only the royals could. The princess was getting ready in her bedroom. She combed her beautiful, long and precious blonde hair. She put makeup on her light colored skin, the cause of much confusion when traveling with her father.
The princess and the king were nothing alike, the color of their eyes being the only thing they shared. The soft chocolate of their eyes had gained lots of followers among the kingdom and the ones close to it. Fortunately, for the queen, Ronald only had eyes for her, and unfortunately for whoever shared young Rosie's heart, she had eyes for whatever shined.
They day of the party the King and Queen's wish was fulfilled... for the most part. Rosie's birthday went along as planned until nearly the end of the night.
Before the whole celebration started, Queen Rose warned Rosie about the possible arrival of the Winter Witch. It was said that the Winter Witch lived in the Northern Kingdom. There were rumors about who she really was and where she came from, but no one ever knew the truth.
During every important celebration in the Kingdoms the people whispered about her, wondering if she would arrive. None had seen her for years; the last that was heard about the mysterious witch was in her own kingdom where a young boy thought he'd seen her in his sister's birthday party, and that was that that was heard.
Princess Rosie thought nothing of her mother's warning, though it's not like she ever gave anything the Queen said a second thought. Instead, Rosie spent the whole evening dancing, drinking and laughing. Or at least that's how it looked like from the outside. In reality she'd had her eye on Prince William from the South, Princess Katie from the North's future husband. Normally Rosie wouldn't have laid a finger on a taken man, yet her eyes couldn't help but wander to the handsome, southern prince. Her friends had already mentioned how striking the prince's looks were, but no amount of words or pictures could have prepared her for such a sight.
A while before the night ended, Rosie saw her moment arrive. Prince William was alone for the first time in the whole party. She wasn't sure what his reaction of her approach would be, but considering the stares and smile she received from him she knew he felt the same. And besides, she'd watched him long enough to know he had drunk just as much as she had. It was an easy mission.
Rosie walked over to the prince with a big, flirtatious smile on her face. She started to talk to him, but he seemed eager to stop. The troubled princess noticed this and said, "Come, I want to show you something." She took Will's hand and led him to a room hidden behind the castle's kitchen. Once there, the two royal teenagers shared a kiss that led to another, and another and so on. They wanted more, they wanted each other forever, but they couldn't. It was no secret that Will and Katie did not love each other, that it was all just an arrangement made by their parents, but even Rosie knew that if the prince was promised to another woman then she mustn't fool around with him. She would have to end their adventure with one last kiss, one that was witnessed by Princess Katie herself.
At the sight of the two love drunken teens her true form started to come to light. When Will and Rosie were back in the ball room Katie's façade faded away. Her lavender colored dress was replaced with a snow white one, her blonde hair darkened until it was as black as the midnight sky, her already fair skin became an almost unnatural tone of white.
Everyone stared at the princess – wait, no. They stared at the witch in her true form. Nobody could've guessed that the lovely princess from the Northern Kingdom was in fact the Winter Witch. The guests and hosts were so in shock that nobody stepped in to save Rosie and Will from the spell that was being cast by the witch.
"So you love each other? You think it's true love? Ha! Well, I bet you can find each other in this big world then. Rosie, such a lovely girl they said. All lies, I see. I've watched you for years, thinking this could all be some big misunderstanding but I guess I was mistaken.
"Do you know how you made all those poor people you stole from feel? The kids you bragged to? How your father felt when you spoke back to him and treated him like garbage? What about your mother, when you ignored her for weeks? Invisible, alone, worthless, no will to live. That's how! And now that's how you'll feel now, Ghost Girl!
"Worry not, you won't die. You'll live until the day the sun dies, watching people come and go. You'll be completely and utterly alone forever. But worry not, the curse can be broken. Too bad I'm so angry I won't tell you how. Don't take it personal, but someone has to teach you a lesson."
Just like that, Princess Rosie was gone, only there in the memory of the few who loved her. Now, Rosie was no longer a princess but a faceless shape of light in a lonely beach. She looked everywhere for her family, her castle, her friends, Will and the Winter Witch. But it was all gone. She cried and yelled. Everywhere she walked the people went away. They were all afraid of the mysterious light, the Ghost Girl.
As for Prince Will, the witch made him sick and after a few days his corpse was found in the guest room at King Ronald's and Queen Rose's palace. His family in the Southern Kingdom grieved for years with Rosie's family in the Western Kingdom. They lost hope in their children, not knowing that they were both alive.
