#Twenty-six: In which he breaks.
'You let me win.'
I grumble as I walk over to her. She shrugs her shoulders, trying to look innocent as she murmurs.
'Got no idea what you're talking about.'
'Little lier, you held back...'
I groan, pulling her to me while leaning my arm over her shoulders. She quirks her eyebrow as if she's silently asking me how I dare to suggest such a thing while she murmurs.
'You promised your mom not to take it too far, I was just making sure you were keeping that promise.'
'By letting me win?'
I question. You know I hate winning like this... I eye her, only making her chuckle some more as she answers.
'It was for the greater good.'
'Do I still get a wish?'
I smirk as she passes her tongue over her dry lips and teases.
'It'll be your last one, birthday boy... I can't keep spoiling you too much, otherwise, you'll get used to it.'
I huff a laugh, pecking her lips before taking her under my wing and walking toward the house as I whisper.
'Sing for me...'
She looks up surprised that I'd make such a request, convinced I was going to ask her something other than that. Probably imagining more lewd things... I smile sideways, leaning a little closer to her ear as I tell her in a hushed tone.
'You told me yesterday that I could sneak into your room later tonight, so I got that part already covered...'
She blushes furiously, clearly having forgotten about that as she mutters.
'See? This is what I meant by spoiling you! But a deal is a deal. Come on, I'll sing you something.'
She grabs my hand, walking around back so we won't get noticed as we enter the house. Her mind runs in overdrive as she drags me toward the piano room. Smiling she slips behind the bench, looking up at me while she asks.
'Any requests?'
I shake my head, just happy she's willing to sing for me at all. Her fingers glide over a few keys and I see her muscles instantly relax as she closes her eyes and inquires.
'You like soul, right?'
I give her a slight nod, knowing she won't see it while wondering how she even knows that about me. I thought she only knew about my preference for Rock music. Maybe Rebekah told her? She takes my silence as a yes and I lean down on the corner of the piano. Thinking for another minute before smiling knowingly. A soft blush taints her cheeks as her fingers swiftly start to drag themselves over the keys like it's their second nature, her angelic voice mesmerizing me the second she opens her mouth and starts to sing.

When I realize which song she has picked I can't suppress a soft laugh, immediately understanding the meaning behind her words. Clever one... I smirk, bathing in the sound of her voice. Her eyes flash over to me at times, a smile still tugging on her lips as her vocal cords easily reach all of the higher notes. Her signature sound lifting the song to a whole other level, completely making it her own.
When her voice eventually dies down, she looks up at me with twinkling eyes seeing the happiness spread around my face as I sit down next to her and whisper.
'That was beautiful. You ...are beautiful.'
She gazes down modestly, her fingers still brushing over the keys as she mumbles a thank you. Agreeing with me? That's new. I smile as I brush her cheek with my index finger, still completely captivated by her as I breathe.
'And be sure to leave that door open, because I'll gladly make use of it tonight...'
She tugs her lip between her teeth, still blushing as she gives me a slight nod. She wants to say something in return, but before she gets the chance Néomy comes strolling inside as she sighs.
'If the two of you are done flirting, there's a shitload of people waiting for birthday moron over here...'
The teasing tone lingering underneath her voice sends another wave of shame over Lexi's features as her shoulders jerk up in surprise. Always there to spoil the mood... I huff, rolling my eyes at Néomy as I get up. Lexi swiftly follows behind me, not able to look her best friend in the eye as we follow her to the front of the house.

The party is in full swing as I look around while pouring myself a drink. I can't believe how many people they invited. I smile, seeing a lot of familiar faces I haven't seen in ages when Jake strolls up to me. I can see he's trying to brace himself, expecting the worst as he mumbles.
'Happy birthday. I hope you appreciate the gift we managed to pull off in record time?'
I chuckle loudly, patting him on the shoulder to calm his nerves as I say.
'Relax. You guys did amazing.'
He immediately lets out a sigh of relief making me chuckle some more as we both settle back against the wall catching up. He explains to me in detail how devoted Lexi truly was as she spent most of her nights after work going to the garage. Working and sleeping in there to make sure everything ended up exactly like before the accident. Even getting into a heated discussion or two with Jake or Ruby over some of the details. I can't help but chuckle imagining her face as she scolds Jake, a well-respected mechanic who's been repairing cars ever since he was a little boy.
'I would've loved to watch that unfold.'
I snort back at Jake, who just shakes his head. Telling me that I most definitely wouldn't when Shelby jumps at me from behind. Placing three kisses on my cheeks to congratulate me as she pitches in after Jake.
'She's downright scary whenever she gets mad. I think Jake and Ruby had forgotten about it after such a long time, but Lex sure as hell gave them a rude awakening.'
She giggles while Ruby just rolls her eyes as she mutters with a smile hugging me as well.
'The girl still got her spunk, that's for sure...'
We chat for another few minutes until I see Lexi stalk back from the hallway, fuming with anger. Rebekah instantly follows after her to find out what's wrong when I see Charlotte come in from the same direction Lexi came from. With a satisfied smirk on her face, she looks around the room until her eyes land on me. Fantastic. I grunt as she starts parading up to me, intentionally swaying her hips a little more than she has to before happily swinging her arms around my neck as she chirps.
'Congratulations, Mattheo!'
The sound of her voice makes my hairs stand on end as I pry her sticky hands off me and ask in a low voice.
'What are you up to?'
She innocently bats her long lashes at me, a little pout on her face as she mutters.
'What? I can't wish you a happy birthday?'
I roll my eyes, seeing Lexi grumble from a distance. Her shoulders are still on edge, like an angry cat that's busy sharpening her claws.
'You know that's not what I'm talking about, what did you say to Lex?'
I snap starting to lose patience and not in the mood for another one of her charades tonight. She shrugs her shoulders, looking at her nails as she scoffs.
'She should learn how to take a joke, that's all.'
I look at her sideways, knowing damn well she's talking bullshit but before I can get a word out I see Alex spurting after Nick, Dane following in tow as well. Oh, great...
Both of them try to stop Nick from going over to Lexi, but it's to no avail as he's already there. Fuck, why did he have to come? I groan frustratedly and by the looks of it, I'm not the only one. Lexi harshly slaps his hand to the side when he tries to lay it on her shoulder. He always knew how to pick the worst timing, pissing her off even more. I sigh already moving away from Charlotte and heading over there as I see Nick talk to Lexi with a sly smile plastered on his face. Goddamn moron, do you have a death wish or something?! I grunt as I already hear Lexi's aggravated voice thundering over the music.
'Nicky, shut your fucking trap! This is not the right moment to go and work on my damn nerves!'
He pulls his brows together waving a hand, mocking like a little kid.
'No one calls me that anymore.'
'What? Little spinning Nicky? At least you still had some moves back then. Not that that managed to make up for your true nature either.'
Lexi sneers, pointing all over him as she grimaces in disgust.
'And which is what?!'
Nick smirks, still not impressed. Geez, does he get off on seeing her go ballistic or what?! I grunt, getting to Lexi's side and holding one of her arms as she spits.
'That you're a sleazy pig!'
Couldn't agree more. I laugh silently, as her eyes quickly dart over to me. Nick rolls his eyes at the both of us as he mutters.
'Oh, great. Look who we have here. If it isn't Mattheo, her knight in dented armor.'
Dented armor? Seriously, that's the best you could come up with? I shake my head disappointed although my aggravation still flows through my bones unwillingly.
'Nicky, seriously, fuck you. It's Matt's goddamn birthday so shut your piehole and bugger off before I kick you out the front door, myself!'
She looks at Alex and Dane, begging both of them to get rid of him. Dane who's also one of Alex's best friends as well as Nick's, since they all used to dance together, pulls on Nick's arm throwing him a threatening glare to obey as he starts to drag him off. Alex also eying him not to even make as much as a squeezing sound, both having had enough of his bullshit. When they're finally out of sight I heave a sigh of relief, letting go of Lexi's arm. Rebekah does the same. As well as Néomy, who must've joined at some point, and they both turn to Lexi to make sure she's alright while Bheks groans.
'Lex, just drop it. They're both stupid and are trying to mess with your head!'
'She's right, you know? And Nick is, in fact, just a pig! You hit a bullseye on that one!'
Néomy adds, forming her hands into a gun while pretending to blow some smoke away. Making all of us chuckle together. Lexi bows proudly, taking credit where it's due as she lets out a deep breath of air. She doesn't get much time to relax and recover however as my sister and her girlfriend come jogging up to us. Rosa slings herself around my neck as Melody greets the others, acting especially giddy once she waves at Lexi. Rosa pulls back from me, following her lover's line of sight with a raised eyebrow.
'Don't ask.'
I chuckle between a whisper, making her turn to me in question. But I shake my head, eyeing her just to watch as Melody giggles innocently.
'Nice to see you again too, Lexi!'
Lexi shifts a bit in her spot, dragging a hand through her hair as she laughs self-mocking.
'Yeah, 'bout that... How about a do-over?'
Rosa, Rebekah, and Néomy all follow their conversation with utmost interest since they all have no clue what is going on exactly... While I enjoy the show with a sly grin on my face. If there was only some popcorn... Melody bursts out in laughter, pointing at Lexi's face as she snorts.
'I got you good, didn't I?'
Lexi laughs back, nodding her head as she walks up to Melody giving her a hug to make up for her behavior earlier today. Rosa no longer able to contain her curiosity but also knowing her girlfriend's whims perfectly well, shakes her head as she grumbles at Melody.
'What did you do now?'
Her tone makes Melody flinch slightly as she lets go of Lexi, looking everywhere but Rosa as she mumbles innocently.
'I may have had a little fun with your brother, at Lexi's expense... Letting her think that I was some kind of ex-girlfriend or something.'
Both Rosa and Rebekah tumble over with laughter as Néomy covers her mouth, trying to stifle her giggles as she mutters humouredly.
'I can imagine how well that went...'
Lexi motions with her hands to just get it over with, knowing that they'll make fun of her whether she wants to or not as she mumbles.
'Yeah, yeah... Laugh all you want, it wasn't funny at the time though.'
Rosa tries to gather herself, shifting over to Lexi and swinging an arm around her to hug her as she giggles.
'Trust me, Lexi. You've got nothing to be worried about.'
'I know that now!'
She laughs, returning my sister's hug as Melody turns to Rosa telling her shamelessly.
'You never told me your brother had such good taste...'
Her eyes wander over Lexi as she gives her a little wink. Back off girls... I grumble silently, not able to help myself as I see Lexi blush slightly now that the tables have turned.
'She's a vision isn't she...'
Rosa adds while Mell clasps herself on Lexi's other free arm. Making Rosa giggle slightly while she motions over to me and I can't help but glare at the both of them. Okay, now I'm starting to get Lex's frustration earlier... I sigh, not happy to see them plastered against Lexi's hips.
'Not sure if this should calm me down or make me even more nervous...'
Lexi murmurs anxiously, making all of the girls sputter with laughter once again and Rosa chuckles wholeheartedly.
'Don't worry, I wouldn't dare steal my brother's prized possession. Neither would Mell's, we're just toying with you.'
'As long as you keep remembering that.'
I grunt at the both of them as Lexi's head dashes over to Rosa as she yelps with wide eyes.
'Prized possession?!'
Carefully, she pushes both girls away from her as she points a finger at Rosa and scoffs.
'I'm not some stuffed animal you win at the annual fair.'
I take this opportunity to grab her hand, stealing her away from my sister and her girlfriend as I drag her to my side. Placing a kiss on top of her head, chuckling all the while about her comparison as I tell her.
'No, you're most definitely not.'
'I like you, you're a keeper!'
Melody chirps happily at Lexi while walking back to Rosa's side. That she sure is... I grin back, as Néomy jokes sarcastically.
'Still not sure he is though...'
I squint my eyes a little, my sister also turning in her direction trying to defend her big brother as I mumble to Lexi.
'Wanna dance, gorgeous? I don't think I wanna stick around to see this go down.'
She nods awkwardly, also fearing how this might turn out as she eyes Néomy to behave herself in front of Rosa. Why bother? I laugh, already taking her hand and leading her to the dancefloor.
'You know as well as I do that they both will stand their ground. Let them fight it out among themselves and not worry about it.'
I snort, placing my hands on her hip as we both swing to the music. She giggles, agreeing with me as she lets herself go a little. I must admit, they all have done an amazing job getting this party running despite the move and everything else going on the past few weeks... I think, looking around me while still dancing. The house is packed with people, the drinks are good and the music even better. Alex even got one of his DJs here and the mixes he plays make you want to dance. Lexi's mind clearly thinks the same as she turns around and playfully grinds her ass against my cross. You're such a tease... I smile, placing my hands on her hips matching her movements.
We both dance for a few minutes to the rowdy music until it suddenly dims down in the middle of the track. My heart skips a beat as soon as I recognize the song he's playing next while Lexi freezes in her step. T-That's the slow song we danced to on her birthday... I think looking around until my eyes land on Rebekah and Melody, who are both standing at the DJ booth with huge grins on their faces. Smooth Bheks, not obvious or anything... I shake my head, looking back at Lexi who suddenly looks like a deer caught in the headlights.
'Now don't go running on me again, princess...'
I smirk, lacing my fingers through hers. The other is already firmly on her hip as I have no intention of letting her escape this time around. Her cheeks flaming hot, she gives me a small nod while she keeps her gaze directed at my chest. Stop thinking. I sigh, trying to ease her nerves as I quickly swirl her around the same way I did when we were alone in the garage. A soft giggle leaves her mouth as she lands back in my arms and she finally looks up at me.
'This time I'm all yours ...my prince.'
She says, her voice barely a whisper when I pull her close against my chest. She lays her head in the crook of my neck. Partially on my chest as well since even with her heels, she isn't tall enough to compare to my size. I rest my head on top of hers, as we both sway to the music with peaceful smiles. Blindly we follow the steps as my fingers play with hers and I ask quietly.
'Do you wanna talk about what happened just now?'
Referring to her frustration about Alex, and most importantly, Charlotte. She shakes her head, cuddling up even closer to my chest as she murmurs.
'Please don't ruin the moment by mentioning either of those morons...'
'Fine... But at least tell me, are you okay?'
I look down at her, still a bit worried about how they managed to get under her skin. I know they both love to play dirty when it comes down to a fight. I grumble to myself as she tilts her head so she can look at me while she asks with a husk tone in her voice.
'Do I seem okay to you right now?'
You do. I beam silently, glad we're finally able to have a proper dance after all these years. You sure had me work for it. I smile to myself as she lays her head back against my chest, a content sigh escaping her lips. This is completely different from when we salsa danced together, slower, more intimate... Back then we were just having carefree fun, enjoying the moment without any bystanders. A few more couples are dancing around, but most eyes are turned toward both of us including Charlotte and Nick.
Nick huffs frustratedly swiftly turning around and heading toward the bar as Charlotte scowls, following our every movement. Jesus, they're both equally annoying. Can't the two of them just shag up and bugger off? I groan to myself, wondering who even thought of inviting them to begin with. Charlotte probably invited herself as soon as she caught wind of the party. I snort to myself, she always had a nag for figuring stuff out she wasn't supposed to know. Alex is probably to blame for Nick. And even though I get that he wanted to catch up with his old friends, I can't say I would've missed either one of them if they hadn't shown. Dane is a nice guy. Don't get me wrong, I just never really talked much to the both of them because Nick always ruined the mood for everyone. I never understood how they were able to stand his childish ways. It has never been a secret he was into Lexi. Hell. He even bought a ride and followed her to the races, just so he could stay close to her. Not that Lexi appreciated it much, she was out for blood the second she saw him stroll up with that cocky smile plastered on his face. I know she isn't interested in Nick whatsoever, but I didn't expect him to still be so hung up on her either. Not that I don't get it... I breathe, grinding my teeth. If anyone's been hung up on her his entire life ...it's me.
Even when I was in Vegas there wasn't a day that went by when I didn't think about her. The first few weeks felt like hell, being so far away from you and not able to talk to you... I was glad I still had a few pictures and her music to listen to, but indulging in that never came without a cost. Most times it wasn't at all comforting... My heart wrenched time and time again when I'd suddenly hear her voice pop up on the radio, leaving me missing you even more than I had before. I missed everything about her. Everything we used to be together, fights and all. Even if that may sound crazy. That was also the reason I couldn't help myself as I ended up going to almost all of her concerts... That way I could at least admire you from a distance, easing the hurt from being away from her. But the thing I missed the most was seeing and hearing you laugh. Just after I got back I had no idea what way to go about it, especially since she was in the middle of a relationship, but when I caught that smile again I knew.
I knew that's why I wanted to get you back, even if technically I never had you in the first place... My heart trembled at the sound of that laugh, sending a shiver from my head all the way down to my toes. It could light up the entire room without her even noticing it, turning a dark day into one of the brightest within a matter of seconds. There's never going to be a woman who could measure up to you. It's either you or nothing... I sigh as Lexi turns to look up at me, drawing me away from my thoughts and back to the dancefloor as she asks.
'Matty, is something wrong?'
I shake my head, my eyes gentle as I dip her back. My fingers softly caress her spine when I draw her back to me and whisper.
'Just reminiscing about the past, beautiful. Nothing more...'
She looks at me questioningly, chewing her lip as she withholds from asking what it is that I'm thinking about. Laying her head back over my heart as she softly squeezes my shirt, recollections of the past swarming in her own eyes as well as she turns her gaze down to my chest. We continue to dance until the soft melody eventually dies down. Transferring back into a wilder dance number, making others join back on the dancefloor as we standstill. Lexi takes a deep breath as she tries to compose herself, gently drawing away from me a smile still lingering on her lips as she mumbles.
'Thanks, Matty... I, uhh... I'm going to get some fresh air, I'll see you in a bit.'
I want to protest, but her eyes tell me not to. So instead, I give her a kiss on her hand whispering softly.
'No. Thank you, beautiful. For not running out on me, I mean. It makes it much more pleasurable when I don't have to worry about you fleeing the scene...'
She throws me a mocking smile in return before walking off. I myself, heading over to the bar so I can get a drink. Glad to see Nick is already elsewhere, I pour some golden liquid into my glass. Before I even manage to put the bottle back in place Rebekah's already by my side, a giddy expression on her face as she asks squealing.
'So... Am I good or what? Spill!'
I still haven't decided whether you're the best, or worst, friend anyone could wish for... I sigh to myself withstanding the urge to facepalm myself and her as well as I take a sip of my drink. Impatiently she jacks my arm, sending half of my drink to tumble over the edge of the glass and over my arm as she whines.
'Matt! Come on! Did you tell her already?'
'Tell her what?'
I groan, shaking my hand to get rid of most of the liquid before rubbing it against my shirt. Now I need to get another refill, dammit... I sigh, picking the bottle back up and squinting my eyes at Rebekah. Wishing she'd at least have the decency to leave my arms alone this time as I pour in some more. Once I'm done I screw the cap back on and take a new swig as she answers matter-of-factly.
'That you love her of course.'
What?! I cough, sending more whiskey over the floor. My face scrunches up at the burning sensation in my throat and nose as I put the glass back on the bar. I give up. I groan, glaring at both my drink and Rebekah as I clear my throat and mutter.
'No. Did you really think I would with all these people around?'
'But it looked so romantic!'
She yelps, turning to Melody who's watching us from a distance forming a cross with two of her fingers. Melody laughs, tapping her own shoulder before returning to Rosa's side.
'Please tell me the two of you didn't bet on it!'
I groan, tempted to pick my glass back up. Just what I need, more people meddling with our affairs! As if Nick and Charlotte aren't annoying enough. I cuss, rumbling through one of the cabinets searching for Lexi's cigarettes.
'Duh! We both betted that it would happen tonight. I thought you'd tell her during a dance. Melody is still rooting that you'll tell her by the end of the evening. Néomy voted against.'
'Shocker.'
I mutter, picking up a cigarette and lighting it, taking a deep puff of smoke.
'She said the both of you would self-sabotage and chicken out before the end of the night.'
The impeccable vote of dis-confidence from Néomy Greenwood. Great. I huff, blowing out some smoke. Nothing new there... Although I can't say I haven't feared the same outcome myself. I groan, taking another whiff before I ask already reluctant to find out the answer.
'Is there anyone that isn't involved?'
She holds up her hand, ready to count everyone who's involved but I stop her before she can manage to do so and mutter.
'Nevermind! I don't even wanna know.'
She shrugs her shoulders, picking up my glass and emptying it in one go as I groan.
'Shouldn't you be busy bothering Ty or something?'
'He won't be here for another thirty minutes or so...'
She says her shoulders drooping slightly and I can't help but smile a little. Even with all of her wackiness, Tyler loves her with all his heart. I'm glad they found happiness together.
'So what did you think about my choice of songs, huh? Huh? Rather smart, don't you think?'
She smirks wiggling her brows. I roll my eyes snatching the glass back from her, pouring in some more. For myself this time. As I try to tell her with a stoic face, also unable to keep the smile out of my voice.
'Okay, that's it! I was just thinking something nice about you, but I've changed my mind. I'm going to search for another best friend ...bye.'
I pretend to excuse myself, putting out my cigarette and taking a step back. She immediately pulls my arm. Oh, hell no! I grunt, trying to save at least half of my drink from gushing over the side again.
'Seriously?! Bheks, you gotta stop doing that! A quarter bottle is gone and I haven't even had a sip, besides from the bit that came right back through my damn nose!'
I grumble angrily, picking up the bottle for the fourth time. Not even bothering to try and pour it into a glass again, I take a swig right from the flask. Rebekah draws her hands back, giggling a soft apology before turning serious again as she complains.
'There's no way you'd find a better friend than me! No one else is crazy enough to put up with your grumpy ass.'
I slowly pull the bottle from my lips, raising an eyebrow as I grin.
'Cocky much? You think anybody but me could stand being around your clumsy ass all day?'
'I've got Tyler!'
She beams, pointing her finger at me.
'I've got your sister...'
I blurt out, averting my eyes as I quickly take a mouthful of Whiskey. God damn, I'm going to need more alcohol! I swear to myself.
'Ahhh~ But there it is ...you don't.'
She counters, moving her finger from side to side. Bloody idiot, you walked right into that trap... I whinge, taking another big gulp of courage before putting the bottle back on the counter. Rebekah crosses her arms, looking way too proud of herself as she taunts.
'You don't actually have my sister. Do you, Matt?'
'Oh, shut up. I'm working on it! But having a bunch of bloody detectives following behind doesn't make it any easier, you know?!'
I growl partly irritated. I know she means well, all of them do. Well, apart from Néomy maybe... She would love to see me fall flat on my face. But it is in fact not making it any easier that all of them are trying to mingle. I feel constantly watched and on edge. There are only brief moments that we're actually alone together.
'Matt... Most of us have watched this scene before. It crashed and burned, horribly. We all want to see you both happy!'
'I get that! I do! But you gotta admit you're a bunch of lousy helpers. You watch us like hawks but when I ask you for help? Questioning you about what I did to scar her so much, you go and stonewall me again!'
'Because I want you guys to be the ones to figure it out for yourselves! But standing by the sidelines for most of our lives, frankly ...we get bored.'
'Oh, so now it's boring? Just a minute ago we were a reality series to which every one of you guys seems fucking addicted too!'
'Urgh! I didn't mean it like that!'
She groans frustratedly tapping her foot. I sigh, pouring some more Whiskey into my old glass. Sliding it over to her as I scoff while playing with the bottle between my hands.
'I know. But try and see it from my perspective... Do you have any idea how goddamn annoying it is to try and make up for something, while you don't even know what it is that you've done?'
Rebekah sighs taking a sip of her drink as I also continue to wash down my frustration.
'And all of you keeping me out of the loop, but at the same time tailing me like ninjas? I love you Bhek's... But it's like walking blindfolded through a damn maze that's filled with boobytraps. The lot of you only makes it even more nerve-wracking than it already is. I don't know if you guys realized this, but the two of us are freaking out enough as is!'
I rant, desperate to get my point across. She looks up at me from her glass, an almost comical expression on her face as she murmurs.
'Love you too, idiot. But it's the blonde version of me you should be saying that to right now. You know, the one without the entire map of treasure island painted all over her skin?'
'Hmm, you mean the one with the amazing voice? Instead of that brunette who's always trying to throttle a crow?'
She shoves me in my side, a slight smile still on her face as she mutters.
'Jackass. But yeah, that one, her name is Lexi, in case you didn't know...'
I roll my eyes also not able to suppress a smile as I take one more sip. She gives me a look from the side, mindlessly swirling her drink as she says seriously.
'Now stop being a wimp and be honest with yourself, and me, for one second.'
I avert my eyes from her, leaning against the bar and looking around the room as I motion her to go on. My eyes automatically carried over to the unruly golden locks of Lexi's hair. She's sitting with Néomy at a side table on the other end of the room, both chatting.
'Do you love her, Matt?'
Rebekah asks in a soft voice as she stands closer beside me, following my line of sight. I can't help but chuckle softly, seeing her shove her hand every few seconds behind her. Violently trying to land a smack on Nick who's trying to chat her up with no luck, whatsoever. Hoping he'll just fuck off as she completely ignores him and continues to talk with Néomy.
'I do...'
I breathe, my hand on the bar still playing with the rim of the bottle. The faces she's pulling with Néomy almost cause me to laugh as well while I whisper under my breath.
'I love her more than you'll ever know, Rebekah...'
Hoping she didn't catch that I quickly take another swig. Seeing Lexi do the same with Néomy as they're both knocking back a few shots. Wait, what? I fur my brows, but Rebekah is seemingly still too occupied with other matters as she giggles.
'Behold, Mattheo Blackwell finally confessed!'
Huh? I blink a few times, trying to figure out what she was saying again before laughing mockingly knowing she did in fact hear me before.
'Cut it out already! Or I will put up an ad, asking if someone else wants to trade their bestie with mine.'
I laugh the last part as she gives my ribcage a playful shove, acting like she feels betrayed and someone just stabbed her in the heart. I swing my arm around her, rubbing my knuckles on her scalp as she giggles.
'But seriously, Matt. Tell her already...'
'There you go again, putting pressure on me with your big mouth.'
I chuckle rubbing her head a little harder, with her pinching my side as she yelps.
'I can't help you're such a pussy!'
'I'm not. You're a clumsy chatty cat though!'
I chuckle again as she snorts with laughter when I tickle her under her armpit.
'Whahaha! F-Fuck off or this kitty will use its, hahaha, cl-claws! Whahaha!'
'Are you going to stop doing my head in then?'
I ask, in no mood to stop if she's going to force me to speak up. I love her, and I love that she's trying to help but I know we've gotta do this our own way.
'Okay! Whahaha, I'll s-stop! Hahaha!'
She surrenders. Putting her hands shakily in the air, panting uncontrollably. I grin, swiftly letting go of her as I lean back against the bar. That always does the trick. I smile to myself as my eyes land back on the bottle of Whiskey. Oh, right. I think, immediately looking back over at Lexi and Néomy to see them knocking back another shot as Alex and Dane stand next to Nick, trying to occupy him so he won't bother her anymore. Why are you drinking? I wonder, not mad exactly, more worried. I'm not opposed to her getting a drink and enjoying herself. Especially at a private party in her own home. It's just that she doesn't have the best track record when it comes to alcohol. She only ever drinks whenever something's bothering her. And most of the time it results in more problems once she actually gets drunk...
'The fuck is she doing?'
Rebekah mutters slightly stunned, also looking at her sister. Fueling the bad feeling in my forming in my gut even further as I murmur.
'I was wondering the same bloody thing...'
Sighing I pick my own bottle back up, quickly taking a large gulp of the content hoping that'll put me more at ease. But when I glance back at Lexi I can see she's already getting tipsy, wobbling on her chair. Luckily, I'm not the only one to notice as Néomy grips Lexi's arm to make sure she won't fall. She gives her a doubtful look, picking up the next shot that was meant for her and downing it herself while shaking her head, motioning she's had enough. I sigh a little relieved that Néomy at least stops her from getting more drunk, still wondering if I should head over to find out what's going on exactly when Rebekah draws my attention back to her.
'It's probably because of those two shits...'
She grumbles regarding Lexi's sudden urge for liquor. First pointing towards Nick, before motioning to Charlotte who is making her way toward the both of us. Fantastic! I roll my eyes averting Charlotte's gaze, hoping that'll send the message across so she won't come over. Not that it has ever helped before. I groan taking another swig of Whiskey and bracing myself for this tornado, wishing it passes as quickly as possible. I've had enough partying, right now I just wanna get ahold of Lexi and steal her away so we can be alone... I sigh, determined to make this conversation as short as possible.
'Charlotte...'
Rebekah grids, trying to sound at least a little polite. Plastering a smile on her face before taking a sip of her drink.
'Rebekah?'
She counters cockily, almost daring her to fire something at her. Rebekah in return grunts frustratedly. Obviously, in on another secret since Lexi must've told her what was going on between them earlier in the hallway. Almost trying to glare her to death but trying to keep the peace by forcing herself to keep her lips sealed.
'What is it, Char?'
I sigh exasperated, not in the mood for any more fuss tonight. She turns to me with a playful smile on her face, batting her plump lashes. Which in my opinion, looks way too tacky with the thick layer of mascara she has applied to them. Making every tiny hair clump together with big blobs of black gue as she places her hand on my arm and asks innocently.
'Matt, I was searching for you... I hoped I could steal you for a little dance before I headed off?'
Rebekah gags in response, glancing at me her eyes both warning and threatening as she snaps.
'Sorry, but I'm not going to sit here and listen to this shit. Tyler just got here and I intend to enjoy my time with him, rather than being around this leach.'
She instantly stands up, heading over to Tyler who just strolled in through the hallway.
'Rude.'
Charlotte whispers in a snarky tone to Rebekah as she walks by before turning back to me. Acting as if nothing happened as she chirps happily.
'So, Matt. How about that dance?'
'Sorry Char, I don't dance.'
Not with you anyway... I add silently, taking another gulp of whiskey. Watching the remanence which is less than a quarter by now slosh back in place.
'Lier! You danced with Lexi, so why not with me?!'
'I'm not in the mood, Char!'
I grumble still keeping my eyes trained on the flask instead of her. She creeps closer to me. No intention whatsoever to let go of me as she grasps my arm more tightly and purrs.
'Matt, love, common and live a little... Why can't we have some fun together? We used to, remember?'
I shudder at the remembrance of that night, almost feeling nauseous as I grumble.
'That was one time, Charlotte ...and it was a mistake.'
'How can you say that? You seemed to enjoy yourself at the time.'
She pouts, still keeping her fingers on my arm. I sigh, pulling back a little as I turn to her and snap.
'It meant nothing, Charlotte. Just let it go already.'
Her face suddenly turns sour, clearly not happy with my answer although she tries to play it off as she scoffs.
'Don't tell me you're still hung up on her? Matt, she will never be able to give you what you need! All she does is play with you until she tosses you aside again, same as last time.'
Her words strike a nerve, the alcohol in my system not doing me any favors as my fuse only seems to grow shorter. You need to leave, now! I cuss to myself as I turn to her, to shut her up once and for all. But before I can manage to get a word out she clashes her lips on top of mine.
Completely taken aback it takes me a few seconds to realize what is happening before I manage to recover, instantly pushing her away from me as I snap.
'What the hell! Are you out of your mind?!'
'It's just a goodbye kiss, Matt. Don't make such a fuss about it.'
She sneers selfishly with a huge grin plastered on her face, but I don't even care about it as my eyes dart over to Lexi. Please. Please tell me she didn't see that happen! I pray, but as soon as I lay my eyes on her I know she did. Goddammit! I wince as she stares right back at me completely and utterly devastated.
Shit! I swear as I see tears burn in the corners of her eyes. Beautiful, fuck, you know that meant nothing! I try to tell her with my eyes. But she shakes her head, quickly blinking away her tears as sorrow makes room for anger. A blind rage takes hold of her as I see her shake with heartache. Within the blink of an eye, she grasps the collar of the first guy she can get her hands on, Nick, smashing her lips onto his.
'See, Lexi's enjoying herself as well.'
Charlotte giggles with a wicked smile on her face as I numbly stare at both of them, balling my hands into fists. H-Hell no, this isn't happening! I curse to myself as I see her stiffen up visibly now that she realizes what she just did, immediately pulling back from Nick. Why him out of all people?!
'Oh, wow. He has guts going back for a second taste...'
Charlotte huffs menacingly as Nick doesn't let go of her. Instead, pulling her in for another kiss. That goddamn asshole! I swear gritting my teeth, anger radiating off me in waves as I growl to Charlotte my voice dangerously low.
'You fucking started this!'
She takes a small step back, alarmed by my demeanor as I can't seem to tear my eyes off of the nightmare that's unfolding in front of me. This kiss doesn't last nearly as long, even if it might feel like an eternity to me personally, and Lexi harshly breaks away from him slamming a flat hand against his face. The impact is hard enough for others to notice the commotion as everyone turns around. The ones that weren't already looking anyway. She swears loudly at him through the venue, Néomy tries to get her attention so she can pull her away. But it's to no avail as she clearly has other things on her mind.
Not bothered to listen to her best friend, she whirls around and stalks toward us. Meanwhile, Alex and Dane are already busy getting Nick out of here before things escalate even more. Néomy and Rebekah are right behind Lexi, neither of them fast or daring enough as she sprints toward Charlotte. Not even glancing in my direction, she grabs Charlotte by the hair and digs her nails into her scalp as she roars.
'Get the fuck out of my house!'
'Let go of me, you bitch!'
She groans in pain, clawing at Lexi's hand trying to free herself. Lexi, livid, only yanks her hair even harder. Almost making her tumble to the ground as she screams.
'I swear to God, one more move and I'll slaughter you on the spot!'
Her words are laced with venom as non of us try to intervene, too stupefied by the sudden dark turn of events as Charlotte sneers.
'Just remember, I was the one to kiss Matt. You on the other hand~'
Her words get cut short, replaced by a painful jammer as Lexi ruthlessly drags her towards the front door and snarls.
'Words included, skank! Get your scrimpy ass out, now, before I change my fucking mind!'
Shoving her unto the ground as soon as she's done speaking, not bothering to give her a second look. Charlotte scrambles up, immediately bolting for the door as Lexi's eyes search around until they land on me. I can see the torment in her eyes as she quickly dashes back over to me and stammers.
'M-Matty~'
'Don't!'
I cut her off, my voice harsh as I look away from her. It hurts too damn much. I groan as most of our friends have gathered around us by now, looking between us both with pale faces. Ruby is the only one brave enough, daring to speak up as she turns to me and mutters.
'Hold it right there, Blackwell...'
'No matter how this ends, you're not going to pin it all on our little blonde firecracker right here.'
Shelby finishes her, swallowing hard as I glare back at the both of them. Ruby on the other hand not backing down as easily as she presses on.
'You can glare all you want Matt, but Shelby is right! We're friends with the both of you but we're not going to stand by and watch as you blame her for all of this!'
I twist my head, the pain in my heart keeping me from lashing out at anyone and everyone. I just can't, not now! I curse, keeping my eyes closed as I tell them through gritted teeth.
'I'm not doing this with the lot of you. Screw this. I'm out!'
Before any of them manage to stop me I walk off, leaving all of the guests, including Lexi, behind me as I head up to my room. Fuck, fuck ...fuck! I scowl, grabbing another few bottles of booze from the kitchen before heading upstairs. Why is it that every time we manage to set one step in the right direction, we end up taking another ten backward?! I screw off one of the caps with my teeth. Spitting it out on the floor before knocking back as much of the liquid as I can, slamming my bedroom door shut behind me.
'Great work, Néomy! You better cash in, because you were right. Self-destructiveness seems to be our fucking trademark!'
I growl to myself as I sit down by the corner of the window. Absentmindedly staring at the sky as I try to soothe my shattered heart, downing the entire bottle at record speed. My hand shakily reaches out for another one as I hear the music downstairs getting cut off, leaving me alone with the muffled agonizing screams that I'm sure are coming from Lexi's lips...
'This was not how it was supposed to go!'
I roar, slamming my fist against the wall as tears start to leak from my eyes. Feeling heartbroken and furious at the same time. I was supposed to tell her I loved her, not watch her throw away everything we've built so far!
My face twists in pain as I hear another animalistic cry from downstairs while I sloth over to my radio, putting on a rock channel and turning up the volume. Blocking out the entire world. More importantly, the desperate cries from the one I love most...
