"This is awesome, you guys. We're playing the Orpheum!" Luke shouted to the three band mates. "I can't even count how many bands have played here and then ended up being huge. We're gonna be legends! Eat up, guys and gal." Holding his hotdog up proudly he looked at the girl who was sitting on his lap and then the two boys who were on his left and right. " 'Cause after tonight, everything changes." With a clink of their hotdogs the group of four ate their last meal happily.
"Chris? Chris?" A girls voice echoed, finally bringing the girl out of her head as she blankly stared at her locker. "Huh?"
"Can we get a picture with you?" The girl asked again, holding her phone up as another kid did the same thing.
"Oh, yeah sure." Both of them smiled happily as they pulled the girl over to stand in between them as they snapped away. "I don't know why you guys want these, but ok." Chris muttered, before they finally stopped, the girl once again thanking her before they were lost in the crowd of students.
Once she was sure no one else was going to ask for anything, a jolt of pain shot through the girl making her release a pain filled sigh as she slammed into her locker, luckily no one noticing. All she could do was close her eyes and wait for it to stop, for all the pain to just stop.
She knew that what ever has been causing this pain has been causing a lot of issues with her, as dance slowly grew harder, music was becoming too feel like more of a chore and breathing was just slowly becoming more of a task rather than a need.
"You need to explain to your sister how choosing to like someone who doesn't really exist, rather than the one real human who likes her." Flynns voice said, echoing through the girls eardrums. "I mean she's all grown up and learning that she doesn't need a man, but is instead going for a man who doesn't exist."
"But he does exist. To me." Julie said back. Chris slowly opened her eyes, ignoring the pain of the light and instead focused on the two girls in front of her at the moment. "Ans he might just be air, but we connect in so many other ways."
"We're talking about Reggie right?" Chris asked, looking at her sister, who just nodded her head.
"You are the the second more watchable duet-ers I've ever seen. Luke and Chris obviously takes the number one spot, if I do say so myself." Flynn smiled, looking at the oldest who didn't seem fully into the conversation.
"But it's not just singing. When we play, we're drawing from the same pain. We both know how it feels to lose someone." When Julie said that, Chris almost felt like she had a moment of relief a brief moment of clarity as her mind went back to the garage, not only to when her and Julie noticed the paper that was filled with unrequited pain, but also to the moments that it was written.
She could feel her eyes grow in happiness as she grabbed her sisters shoulder, not caring that she was interrupting whatever the two were saying, a big smile on the girls face as she shook her sister. "Oh my gosh, Julie, you're a genius!" With that the girl started to walk towards the front entrance, but was stopped by Julie and Flynn. "Chris, you still have class."
"Right, sadly." She muttered turning back around to head towards her forth hour. "Like I said, genius."
~*~*~*~
Julie and Chris were walking up the familiar drive way heading towards the door that housed the elderly couple who they last saw in pain. "So, why do I have to do this again?"
"Your doing this because, if I went and knocked on the door looking like I did right now, I think I just might allow the Pattersons to see Luke a lot more sooner than we all might like." Chris said as she pushed Julie closer to the door. As Chris was about to ding dong ditch, a gust of wind and a familiar poof came from right of the two girls.
"Luke!" Both Molina girls said, gaining a look from the ghost himself. "What are you guys doing here?"
Julie looked at her sister, and when she saw that she wasn't going to say anything she nudged her towards the ghost, finally breaking her out of a trance. "Ok, look. The night we were performing great, I got this massive headache and flashed of someone else's life. So, after running and just taking a moment to go over what happened I realized I gained Reese's memories."
"Wait what?"
"No, shush." Chris put her finger to the boys lips before he could question her more. "As I was saying, I gained Reese's memories the other night. The one key thing that stuck with me though was you writing a song for yourself, but for her as well. I know how hard it is when you want to speak to someone you love and can't. I feel that way every day, and I sure know Reese felt the same way, when her father was in jail for most of her life."
She could feel her heart chip away, as she recalled the heart breaking sobs that came from her/Reese's young mouth that faithful day as her friends, mother and her watched the man leave in a car that was suppose to be protecting them from criminals.
Luke just let out a distressful sigh, as he turned back to look at the girl. "I don't even know what I'd say to her, even if she could hear me."
"Yes, you do." She said grabbing his hand and giving a gentle comforting squeeze. "You've already said it. Trust me."
The Patterson boy looked at the girl as he slowly went over towards Julie and with a moment of assurance he rang the doorbell. Chris looked at the two before running towards the bushes to hide as Julie walked over towards the door, Luke looking over to the other girl, before his attention was drawn to the door.
An elderly man stepped out, as he looked at the teenager who was standing in front of him. "Hello. Can I help you?"
"Hi, I'm Julie. I believe you had a son named Luke?"
"Yes, that's right. And you are again?" Mr. Patterson questioned, still not fully understanding on why she was there.
"Julie Molina. You're son's band sued to play in my families garage." When she could see the pure look of confusion, Julie reached in her back pocket and pulled out on of two pieces of papers out. "My sister came across this song that he wrote and figured you might be interested?"
"Well, yes." He said happily. "Please come in, I'm Mitch." With a nod Julie entered the house and before closing the door she looked at her sister and friend. Luke glancing back also could see the hurt that was in his crushes eyes, and with a single finger he appeared over towards her and raised a hand in her direction.
At first she just stared, not understand what he was trying to say as she heard the door close, but with a final shake the girl grabbed his hand as the two disappeared into the house. Luke knowing that dilemma for her made sure that she was hidden away from sight, but was still able to hear what was being said between his parents and her sister.
"Julie lives in the house where Luke and the band rehearsed. She was just telling me she found a song that Luke wrote." Mitch said towards what Chris would assume was his wife, stepped around the wall that was separating the girl from the group.
"It's a song about a girl named Emily?" Julie questioned as she unfolded the notebook page.
"I'm Emily."
"Then I think your son may have written this song for you."
With shaky hands Emily grabbed the page, almost like she was nervous that it might disappear before she could ever read it. Chris felt the all to familiar pain in her head once again, but this time it wasn't to cause harm, as she heard the familiar guitar strings play and the sad voice of her best friend echo in her head, memories slowly started to play as well.
(Luke, The band, Present time, Past)
First things first
We start the scene in reverse
All of the lines rehearsed
Disappeared from my mind
It was nearing Christmas, when Reese remembered Luke leaving his home and family to live on Bobby's couch in their garage. She was downstairs chilling on the couch watching her and Luke's favorite movie, It's A Wonderful Life, for the thousandth time when a knock was heard at the front door.
Curious the girl got up and opened the door to a tear stained Luke, his hair dissolved and his beanie being stretched out by his hands. "Oh my gosh, Luke!" She cried pulling the boy into a hug as the two entered her house. "What are you doing here so late? W-Why are you crying?"
When things got loud
"I left them Reese." He sobbed into the girls shoulder. "I ran away from home, and left them. She said that what we were doing wasn't worth it, and in spite I left them."
One of us running out
I should have turned around
"Oh, Lu." Was all she could say as she held the boy in her arms for most of the night. The two just siting on the ground as he continued to cry and Reese continued to whisper in his ear.
But I had too much pride
No time for goodbyes
Didn't get to apologize
Pieces of a clock that lies broken
Two months had passed since that day and even though missing flyers filled the streets and so many unanswered calls left to ring, Luke never went back to his parents. Instead he continued to hide in his friends garage, only coming out to perform for gigs, but quickly leaving when ever he would see either Emily or Mitch searching for him at the end.
If I could take us back
Reese could tell it was taking a toll on her friend as whenever Luke thought no one was around or looking he would either just sit and stare out the windows till the sunset. Yet, more times he would hunch over his journal and scribble words only to cross them out a second later.
If I could just do that
And write in every empty space
The words I love you in replace
Then maybe time would no erase me
As she listened and watched, Chris could feel the pain that was being sung by her friend and slowly hear the sobs that were coming from the other room as Luke continued to sing outlaid and in her memories.
If you could only know
I never let you go
And the words I most regret
"This is beautiful Luke." Reese said, wiping tear away from her eye. "But, you don't have a name for the song yet."
Are the ones I never meant to leave
Luke looked at his friend, her head in his lap after he set his guitar down to the side of him. "I was thinking maybe..."
"Unsaid Emily"
"I think its beautiful, name for this piece." Reese smiled as the two looked at each other.
Silent days
Mysteries and mistakes
Who'd be the first to break?
Guess we're alike that way
After deciding on the name of the song, Luke worked on an acoustic something different than his usual flair of electric. Every once in awhile he would use the help from Reese, but most of them time it was him at every moment he had working to make this song perfect for his mom as another month passed.
He said, she said
Conversations in my head
Chris could remember the mix of heat and cool air blowing through her hair when Luke and Reese snuck over to the Pattersons house to check up on Mitch and Emily.
And that's just where
They're gonna stay forever
She remembered looking back at the boy and seeing the tears streaming down his face as he watched his parents move slowly through life, like it no longer had meaning with him gone.
If I could take us back
If I could just do that
And write in every empty space
The words I love you in replace
Then maybe time would not erase me
It was a month before Bobby and Reese's birthday when Luke finally called the band in for assistance. The guys playing the usual instruments, the only difference was Luke still playing the acoustic and Reese playing a tambourine as she sat on the stool and watched her friend with a sense of pride.
If you could only know
I never let you go
And the words I most regret
Are the ones I never meant to leave
Unsaid Emily
"Do you think you'll ever perform this to her?" Reese whispered to the boy as the two were chilling on the beach after practicing an hour ago.Her fingers gently running through his hair as his head laid on her lap looking towards the stars.
Ah-ah-ah
Luke opened his eyes and looked up towards the girl, who was staring out towards the ocean that was at calming pace at the moment. "I thought about after playing the Orpheum, maybe going back home and showing her the song."
Ah-ah-ah
After he said that, Reese looked down towards the boy and just smiled at him before looking back towards the sea and continuing to mess with his locks, just enjoying the sense of peace they had at the moment.
If I could take us back
If I could just do that
And write in every empty space
Chris looked over towards the windows and could just imagine seeing the red and blue flashing lights gleaming from the window and she could almost see the heartbroken faces that was on both the couples faces.
The words I love you in replace
Then maybe time would not erase me
If you could only know
The painful sobs wanted to escape from Chris mouth, as she went to wipe the tears out of her eyes, a cold hand did it for her. Looking up she saw Luke standing their tears in his eyes and running down his face as he looked at the girl. Again he put his hand out towards her and no hesitation happened as she grabbed his, the two walking from around the wall and back towards the group.
I never let you go
And the words I most regret
Are the ones I never meant to leave

Emily and Mitch looked up and what they saw made the tears go faster. "Luke? Reese?" Emily stuttered as she looked at the two, before looking back at the girl thinking her mind was playing tricks on her. "Thank you."
Luke turned his head toward the girl that was holding his hand before looking back at his parents, as he took a step forward. "Mom, dad?" He stuttered, his mouth feeling dry from crying still, but he could feel it starting back up as his parents looked at him.
"How can we see you?" Mitch whispered as he went to touch his son only for Luke to pull away not wanting to hurt his parents more than he already was.
"I just wanted to let you both know I'm alway here for you two. I'm sorry that I left you mom and I'm sorry that I couldn't come back and make things right like I wanted. Just know that I'm happy and moving on with Reese and the guys, ok?" Luke said as he wiped a tear away from his cheeks. "I love you both and I'll always love you guys no matter what."
Before Mitch or Emily could say anything, Luke disappeared behind the wall again with Chris and was quick to yank his hand out of hers, not in a mean way but just so he could see his parents one last time.
"Luke? Reese?" Emily questioned once again as she looked for the two, and Julie not wanting the pair to suffer spoke up.
"I write music in the same room that he did, and I can tell you it is a magical, happy place for me and my sister. I know he was only seventeen, when he... but he lived doing the one thing he was born to do. Not many people find that, but Luke did, he was lucky."
"It was so nice to meet you." Emily whispered as she hug that paper close to her.
Julie was about to leave but felt the paper in her back pocket and with a sigh she turned back towards the couple. "You guys also knew of a Reese, right?"
"She was Luke's best friend and was in his band as well, why?"
Pulling out another paper, she handed it towards the couple. "I found this song and it was dedicated for her parents I think. If you can could you maybe give it to them if you see them anytime soon."
"We will, thank you again Julie." Emily smiled, as the two watched the girl leave through the door, not noticing Chris leaving as well as they were more focused on the song that was in their hand for one of their friends.
Both sisters were outside wiping away their tears, as they looked around for Luke who sadly was no where in sight.
"Where are you Luke?" Chris questioned as the two girls walked towards her truck to head home, where news was waiting to be announced.
So I'm emotionally tired now after writing this, and I'm not ready to finish this book just yet, but the end is nye sadly. Once this is finished I'm going to be working on my other book the missing, but also another book that I will post when this is finished.
~Question time~
-Did you guys like the little moment between Luke and his parents?
-You ready for the ending parts of this book?
Other than that I'm going to get some sleep since it's almost four o'clock in the morning where I am right.
