Chapter 20: Ending
Trey's car pulled up and he ran towards us with Amelia on his heels. They both looked anxious and pale.
"Oh my god Trey! Fix this!" Amelia squealed.
Trey dug his fingers into his hair.
"Shit! Shit!" he screamed.
"I can dump their bodies into the river. We can leave some lover suicide note, I watched that in a movie last night," said Mike, seeming proud of his idea.
"Forensic linguistics is alive and thriving buddy," I told him.
He narrowed his eyes at me. "I don't even know what that means girl."
I narrowed my eyes back. "They can tell our writing and stylistic markers apart from yours."
"You making my brain hurt, girl," he told me.
Trey groaned. "It means your plan is stupid. That's what you get when you drop out of school at the age of 11."
"Have they told anyone yet?" Amelia bit her lip.
"If they did we would have been caught by now," Trey pointed out.
I really should have listened to my dad and dropped this.
The three huddled, conspiring with each other. I looked around thinking of a way to escape, call for help, anything.
"Eva," Nick said in a low voice.
I looked over at him. "You think of something?"
He shook his head. "No, I just wanted to tell you that I love you. Even though I forgot everything, I learned to love you right away. I don't think I ever forgot because you are just so easy to love."
I bit my lip to stop me from crying.
"Don't talk like that. We're going to make it," I said with a trembling lip. He sounded like he was saying goodbye.
"Still. I needed to tell you these words. I don't ever want to leave the living world again with regret again. My only regret is that I wasn't able to keep you safe," he said.
I shook my head. "No, no. Don't say that. You know perfectly well I would have put myself in harms way regardless."
This made him smile.
"Nick?"
"Yes Eva?"
"I love you too," I told him earnestly, trying to convey all my emotion through my eyes. "And Nick?"
"Yes Eva?"
"I'm sorry."
His eyes widened when he realized I was up to something. He shook his head, urging me to change my mind.
When we were twelve, Nick tied me to a tree in our backyard. I was stuck there for hours since he told my dad I was over at his house playing with Flash. I spent hours trying to get out the rope then finally got out. I remember reading books and watching tutorials on how to escape bindings for a month after traumatized that Nick might try something like that again. Luckily for us, Mike was not a boy scout.
When Mike said to drop the bat, I made sure to drop it nearby.
Trying both Nick and I with the same rope was not wise. Nick was built bigger than I was, meaning I had more wiggle room. I kept wiggling until I was able to force my way out of the bind. I slowly reached for the bat hoping I wouldn't catch their attention.
"Hey!" Amelia yelled. "She got out!"
I picked up the bat and stood in front of Nick.
Mike held the knife back up pointing it at me.
"Put the bat down," he warned.
I raised a challenging brow. "I think my bat reaches farther than the knife. Wanna see who's faster?"
I hoped he couldn't call my bluff and mistake my hope for confidence.
I could tell his demeanor began to fade.
"It's three against one. I'm pretty sure my reflexes, your knife and Amelia's backup could take her down," Trey pointed out. Ugh! Damn it.
"You sure I'm alone?" I desperately tried my last card.
"Yes, Nick is tied up," Amelia pointed out.
"I wasn't talking about Nick," I gave my best crazy girl smile. "I got friends on the other side."
"What are you talking about?" Trey furrowed his brows.
"Mike knows, don't you Mike? How I am friends with the dead? You've seen me control them," I gave Mike my crazy eyes.
Mike took a step back, his hand shaking. "Witch."
"I am, you've been watching me. Clearly you seen the animal sacrifices I have left behind," I said, hoping he would fall for it.
Mike swallowed audibly. "Sacrifices?"
"Abigail," I looked to the Mike's side. "Don't be shy. Make yourself known."
His knife fell. Mike let out a swear word before running away. Trey looked at him in disbelief, calling for him, but Mike was long gone. Now with the knife out of our way, I had a better chance of survival.
"What the hell!" swore Amelia. "Trey, what is she saying!"
"She's a liar," Trey said taking a step closer to me. I took one back.
"You stay away! I've been longing for a reason to smash both your heads," I said.
Trey chuckled. "Honey, with those arms you don't stand a chance around me."
My skinny arms took a swing. Trey's eyes widened as he jumped back.
"Crazy bitch actually swung."
"That's right, I'm crazy. Come closer, and you'll see just how crazy I am."
"Trey!" Amelia whined. "Stay away from her! She's a psycho!"
I took another swing until I was able to stand where I wanted. I had Mike's knife under my shoe. I kicked it towards Nick who quickly put his foot over it while I continued to swing the bat as a distraction.
"Tell me Trey, would you really have killed me?" Nick asked. Trey took a quick glance at Nick before returning his gaze on me.
"Yes Nick, I would have. I still will. You always got everything I wanted. The girl, team captain, popularity. I was always second. Second in everything. I didn't want to be known as Nick's best friend. I wanted to be on top," Trey admit.
"And you Amelia, you were okay with them killing me? For what?" Nick asked her.
"You never cared for me Nick! Even from the beginning! You never liked me! I couldn't break up with you because I needed to stay queen of the school! With you gone I could actually date someone who liked me and remain number one!" she admit.
Wow. And they called me a psycho.
"I've had enough of this," Trey stated. "It's time to end this."
He lunged at me, going for the bat. I jumped back and swung. Trey caught the bat and tried to yank it out of my hands. I gripped it with all my might, but he was stronger. He kicked me, forcing me to let go and fall down.
Trey held the bat up ready to swing it down. I closed my eyes and shielded my head.
Amelia let out a scream.
I heard an oomph and opened my eyes to find Nick had tackled Trey to the ground. The bat had rolled out of Trey's hand. I ran to get it. Nick held the knife to Trey's face. "Don't fucking move."
Despite the fear in Trey's eyes, he looked furious.
"You too Amelia," I said as I watched her attempting to back away. "You know perfectly well that I never liked you. Don't give me an excuse to hurt you."
She froze in her spot, her legs shaking.
"Babe, find reception and call the cops," Nick ordered.
I went to stand in the spot Mike stood to call Trey and found a weak reception. I told them what happened and they said they'll be here soon.
"They'll never believe you," Amelia said. "Everyone knows you're crazy. No one will believe you Eva. And I'll just say you tried to kill us Nick because you were jealous!"
"It's over Amelia. I recorded the whole thing," Nick said. "You think I was going to even risk losing my memory again. I pressed record the moment Mike showed up."
Amelia let out a squeal, while Trey swore out loud.
Moments later the cops showed up looking at the surrounding realizing something was actually up. They saw the knife in Nick's hand and the bat in mine."
"Put the weapons down!" They ordered. We threw our weapons on the ground.
"Officers help! They're holding us here against our will!" Amelia tried.
"I have a full confession on tape officers," Nick said.
Trey got up looking back and forth between Nick, Amelia and the police. Then he ran.
One of the officers ran after him, while the other took the three of us into custody and called for backup. I was not aware if they caught Trey or not before they took us back to the station. I waited for my mom's husband, Steve, to get there before giving my statement. I sat in a cell waiting for them to tell me what was going on. Did they catch Trey? Did they believe Amelia's lies? Was Nick's recording enough to free us?
"Eva Montgomery," said an officer. It was officer Ferdinand, the one who first tried arresting me when Nick went missing. "You're free to go."
My eyes widened in shock even though I knew I was innocent.
He opened the cell door for me, letting me out. Steve stood on the other side and quickly hugged me. "Your mother and I have been worried sick."
"Thank you Steve," I wrapped my arms around his torso.
"Come on, your parents waiting for you," he said, guiding me outside. My parents quickly pulled me in for tight hugs. For a moment I thought I'd never see them again, I was just glad I was able to hug them once more.
"You are grounded for life," my father said, holding back tears.
"Okay dad, I deserve that," I hiccuped.
"Is there something longer than life? You're grounded for longer than life!" My mother exclaimed.
"I love you too guys," I hugged them again.
I noticed Nick's parents looking at us anxiously. Where was Nick? Why wasn't he out yet.
"Steve, where's Nick. What's going on?" I asked.
He shook his head. "His parents got him his own lawyer. I don't know anything yet, I can try asking."
Steve disappeared only to return moments later with Nick and a man I assumed to be his lawyer. His parents rushed to him hugging him like they did when he got out of his coma. After assuring them he's alright, he walked towards me and pulled me in for a tight hug. "You are a crazy girl."
I let out a sound, a half cry, half laugh.
"You'll probably be the reason I die. I just know it. Scaring me to death like that," he said, his hug getting tighter.
"I'm sorry. You just have so much to live for. I wanted you to get that chance," I told him. Even at the risk of my life.
He pulled back to give me an furious look. "Don't ever think like that or doing something like that again. My "so much to live for" is you. Don't you get that by now?"
I bit my lip and nodded because I felt the same way.
"Can we promise each other something?" Nick asked.
"Anything."
"From now on, we live for each other," he asked. "Or at least try, I know you like throwing yourself in the face of danger.
This made me laugh.
We needed to stay safe to stay in each others lives. I couldn't agree more.
"I think we can do that, after all, we've had enough deathly experience to last a lifetime or two," I said, making Nick smile.
"You can say that again," he said.
And we did.
We savoured each day like our last.
Even if it were our last, I knew deep down that the universe would connect us together once again.
