Overlooked Genre

So, I've been thinking. Have you ever heard of fanfiction authors getting famous? I sure haven't. Why? The fanfiction genre is so overlooked. I'm telling you, even with all the crappy fanfics with terrible grammar, (whooaaaa grammar Nazi ova here) there are a lot of really good fanfictions. It's sad that a person can have such a gift of writing and decides to use it on fanfictions, but they are never acknowledged.

People always think that people who write fanfictions can't write normal stories. That's anything but true. Fanfiction writing is basically the same as a normal story. The only difference is that you have pre-made characters. Although many fanfics are extremely cliché (oh look MITM right there because MITM is so trucking cliché its not even funny anymore) people have a lot of super awesome ideas. You just have to look. It's not like just because a few people want to write a story that don't know the difference between they're their and there in these fandoms doesn't mean none of us do. It's saddening that such a light has been cast upon so many great authors that really could easily be famous. Especially ones that don't even have 100-200 followers.

I understand that we have fanfiction.net, but how seriously do people take that website? I quit after 2 weeks. It is super confusing and not even close to user-friendly. It's a super overlooked site too, and when I mention it anywhere, I get a snort of amusement.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's stupid to overlook such a large genre full of super talented people. I'm not saying we should stop writing fanfictions, I'm saying that we should try to at least get the genre to be... laughed at less? I guess? It's not a genre to lose hope on.  Most fanfiction writers have a lot of hope for the future of writing. They're giving us the hope. Maybe if we can show we can write some original stories with original characters, people may not see us as just stupid fangirls that devote our lives to people we an never meet. Maybe we can finally be seen as true writers, as many people on this site writing fanfictions should be.

And no, I'm not talking about myself. Don't kill me, but I don't like most of my writing. I like some, yes, a little bit has hope of some day being published, but you know. Who ever actually likes their writing though? :)

Hope at least a few of you agree. I thought this was a topic I had to discuss, and get this all out. Thanks guys!
