Music tastes and other preferences
Okay, this has bugged me for a while now.
It's pretty obvious that I don't like very conventional music. I'm not a huge fan of pop, I'd much rather listen to alternative, punk, rock, etc. I definitely tolerate pop music, and I would never shame it. It's an art form and it's beautiful that people find different ways to express themselves like that. It's just not my cup of tea. I would honestly rather listen to My Chemical Romance than 5SOS.
The thing is, I would never make fun of anyone who listens to 5SOS or Taylor Swift or One Direction. It's a preference of theirs and it doesn't define them. Just because they like something that I don't find particularly pleasing doesn't mean they're any worse than me. They have an opinion and that's amazing, that's what makes us different as human being. If we all liked the same things then how boring would the world be? Music is an expression, and you listen to music that you can connect to.
What I find absolutely unbearable is people putting others down for a PREFERENCE. It's literally what makes them happy and you're making fun of them for something that makes them happy. I don't care if it scares you or if you feel like it's stupid. That person enjoys that band and it's not making any difference to your life. So let them be happy.
Another things with music is that people judge bands just by how they sound. If I let people see what the bands I listen to look like (mainly My Chemical Romance for this one, Fall Out Boy isn't very intimidating. Patrick and his little glasses and fedora, oh no, so scary...), they would judge them immediately. If I then had them listen to a song, they'd judge the sound. They wouldn't look into the lyrics to see how people connect to it. However, if I show them the song lyrics and a quote such as, "No matter how bad it gets, never give up. Always keep running. We will always be there for you. Just turn up your speakers, sing like nobody's listening, and dance like nobody's there. -Gerard Way" Then suddenly Gerard Way and the rest of MCR are great. Just because someone looks scary or music sounds way different than what you're used to doesn't make the band members or the fans monsters. In the end it's the emotion put into songs, the meaning of them, and how the band treats their fans. So honestly I'd much rather be a fan of bands that repeatedly give emotional support to their fans, that actually care, and that deliver pizzas to fans (Fall Out Boy I love you) than some normal band that couldn't give two craps whether I was okay or not. Being a fan of something should always bring you joy. That's why you're there in the first place.
On the matter of preferences, let's talk about preferences for people we like. And not a sexual preference, like types of guys/girls. I have no idea how many times people have said stuff about "oh how could you ever like him he's not even attractive" and I either say "haha shut up its Gerard Way/Patrick Stump he's cute as heck and I don't care what you say" or I just leave because honestly people don't seem to understand the way a preference or opinion works. My opinion of a nice looking guy is probably a lot different than a couple of people reading this. We probably have a lot of differing opinions on this subject. That's completely fine, as long as we stay respectful about it. And maybe you find looks more important than personality, maybe you find personality more important than looks. I, personally, and the latter, but it's okay if you're the former. That's what makes you happy and I just wish everyone would realize that. Not everyone has to be exactly like you, not everyone has to love the same things that you love. If they like a thing that you're not particularly fond of, then, guess what you can do? You can take your mouth, yes that little thingy on your face where noises come out, and you can just close it. It's literally that easy to be a considerate person. You can literally make the world a better place by not saying anything. Have an opinion to share that will hurt the feelings of the person you're talking to? That's probably not something you should share. Boom, you've been a decent human being! Wow! Level up!
Ugh. People. I've really had to get this out for a while. I'm glad I finally did, and I hope at least someone read the whole thing. I attached one of my all time favorite songs to this chapter. It's Sing by My Chemical Romance. The lyrics version of course, so if you've never heard of MCR then go ahead and listen to the song and read the lyrics. Then write down your opinion about it. Then go look at a picture of the band. Has your opinion changed? This is more effective to read the lyrics without music first, but that's a long process XD
Hope someone can relate! I'm going to bed now. So long, and goodnight!
