5; ASSEMBLE
Someone knocked at the door, and honestly I am not in the freaking mood. I mean the jet, black outs, it's too overwhelming. A few days passed by since the hospital and I'm finally in my bed room, foreshadowing the next life events without, her.
"I'm impressed with the place," Nick remarked as he entered the bedroom door. Abbey decided to go back to her room, she thinks space is all I need. I've been isolated for two days, but as soon as I left the hospital, Nick had to go back to do some business. He promised to come back a few days later, which is practically now.
"Sorry Nick, but this is probably the only time I won't let you talk to me," yeah, rarely would I say this to anybody, but I'm exhausted and haven't showered,
"Amelia Elnora Vale. A girl with amazing abilities, genius hacking skills, and the impressive martial arts, and a numerous other things, wants one of her closest friends away for awhile?" We just stared, having no idea how to respond.
I nodded. "Nick, can't you see?" tears filled up my eyes, "she's gone. I barely have anything left."
"You have yourself, me, and Abbey. There maybe a slight difference in your life from now on, but you just have to face it." Wow, this is probably a really nice pep talk.
"Why? This is useless. Could you just get out?!" There was this pause, but my frown got deeper to the point of anger. Although he just continued talking, doesn't matter if I don't want or need this talk.
"Come with me," where?
I gave him a good look in the eye. Again not in the mood. "Does it look like I would love to go to anywhere? Bribe me anything but nothing will ever change." I don't care if I am acting like a stubborn brat, but all of this, it's useless.
His frown gotten deeper too, but not to the point of anger. "Amelia, I meant work with me. To S.H.I.E.L.D. A place where your parents told you all the time, it made them feel alive. Themselves." Oh, very funny but definitely no. That organization is probably the reason why most of my relatives is dead. All because of S.H.I.E.L.D. But I shouldn't have shrugged off that call in the first place.
Plain stupid, I need a drink. Lots of it. "Amelia, getting drunk, wasted, high, useless, or all of the above won't get you anywhere. If you are planning to quit on yourself, you will be nothing and end up dying useless," okay, that was very harsh, "but Amelia, this strong girl in you cannot definitely be wasted and I believe you will get through this eventually, with us. After all, your life has just begun and don't plan on wasting a head start. Your choice." He then started walking away. Pondering, I guess doing a job like that won't matter, besides FBI is giving me a few weeks to recuperate of, yeah.
No, wait probably, or maybe. This is A rare opportunity. "By the way, when you were ten and you just recently discovered your powers, I made a promise to your mother, a promise she requested me to keep and a promise that I voluntarily would do just for you."
"What is it?" Ha, Nick Fury, never thought he'd keep personal promises with anybody.
"To take care of you if anything happens, even though if you're no longer ten or fourteen, or even twenty. Your mother gone, I'll be there to look out for your ass." He walked closer to the bed. Our eye contact had serious intent, and this 'pep talk' is very unnecessary. I need a beer.
I sighed. "Why? I mean you're gone most of the time, saving the world."
"There's always promises with no reasons." I know.
"But why do it?"
"What answer are you seeking?"
I sighed, "I don't know, my parents pasts, importantly myself. Nick, at this point, I have no idea."
"Me either." I looked up, giving him an uncertain look. He's doubtful.
"How about why won't you want to work at S.H.I.E.L.D?"
"Well," yup, I really do not know. He just scoffed and chuckled. I mean I have a good paying job, at least I have a job.
"Exactly, now move your ass, pack your bags. I may need your help in Avengers Initiative." What have I just brought myself ? And honestly, I don't think they need my help.
Nick turned his back and walked away from the room. Abbey stood all this time eavesdropping on the conversation, stepped aside to make way for a director of a really profound counterterrorism organization walking away.
Wait, I never answered. Or what?
~What Nick meant by business, he meant to recruit the Captain, a Doctor, the Assassin, and the genius, playboy, billionaire, philanthropist. From here on out, there will be various point of views, so watch out. Two days earlier~
~Phil's POV~
Finally locking on Natasha's location, it's time to ring her.
While patiently waiting for them to answer, a Russian man answered instead, "Hello?" Totally expected Romanov's interrogation to be over by now.
"Um, yeah, may I speak to Ms. Romanoff, please?"
Then there was a pause, but they better be passing the phone. My phone was answered by another Russian man, I am guessing the boss, who started scolding me in Russian, but I have to interrupt. "You are at 114 Swaleski Plaza, third floor. We have an F-22 exactly eight miles out. Put the woman on the phone or I will blow up the block before you even make the lobby." There was that pause again, and this better be Natasha this time.
I heard as they passed the phone to a panting, Natasha. "Hello?"
"We need you to come in," it really is urgent, for her considering its Barton.
"You kidding?". Obviously annoyed, "I'm working."
"This takes precedence," she's really wasting the patience here.
"I'm in the middle of this interrogation, and this moron is giving me everything." I guess he is. "Look, you can't pull me out of this right now."
"Natasha," giving a slight pause, I lowered my voice, "Barton's been compromised."
Intense pause.
"Lemme put you on hold," she better get out of there. I knew the news would shock her. It's Barton for Christ's sake.
Then I heard kicking, a chair breaking, grunts of Russian men, more screaming in pain of Russian men, so practically I'm treating this like hanging up music. Yeah, I'm considering myself as patient.
"Where's Barton now?" She resumed back to the informational conversation. Finally.
"We don't know." My reply was brief, but it's thousand meanings heavily concerned her partner. Well, ally, friend, wingman. List keeps growing.
"But you think he's alive?" Nat, it's Barton for god's sake.
"We think so," I continued while watching previous surveillance of Agent Barton and Agent Romanoff fighting side by side. "I'll brief you on everything when you get back. But first, we need you to talk to the big guy." Yup. Avengers Initiative, activate.
"Coulson, you know Stark trusts me just as far as he can throw me," nope, you're getting the big guy.
"Oh, I've got Stark. You get the big guy."
~Natasha's POV~
"You should've been payed out front Banner," Bruce murmured to himself as he entered the abandoned house at the edge of town. Now, it's time to recruit the big guy. We're SHIELD. Efficient and less focused on rapid time consumption.
"You know, for a man that decides to avoid stress, you picked a hell of a place to settle," I mean, why India? My eyes roamed around the abandoned house, then they finally met Banner's eyes.
"Avoiding stress isn't the secret," very nice answer or secret as he prefers.
"Then what is it? Yoga?" I raised an eyebrow. He scoffed at my sarcasm.
"Well you brought me to the edge of the city, smart," Bruce said as he started strolling around the house, eyeing the his surroundings, "I assume the whole place is surrounded?"
I gave him a warm smile, "it's just you and me." Little white lie.
"And your actress buddy," he started pointing out to the girl that lured him in here, who just fled through the window as soon as he entered. He continues, "She was spying too? They can now start that young?" He thinks he's aware of everything what happened, it's wrong.
"I did." Well, I didn't have the perfect childhood, just so you know. He kept on eyeing the place.
"Who are you?"
"Natasha Romanoff."
He bowed his head, thinking he knows the answer on why I am here in the first place. "Are you here to kill me, Ms. Romanoff? Because- cause that's not gonna work out, for everyone." Yup, wrong answer bud.
"Oh no, of course not," I insisted, as well as I took a step forward, towards him, "I am here on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D."
"S.H.I.E.L.D." I gave him a look that practically said 'buddy, it's S.H.I.E.L.D!' But he continued to ask, "How'd you find me?"
"We've never lost you doctor," I started to explain, "we've kept our distance. Even helped to keep of some interested parties off your scent." He better start trusting me and get this over with.
"Why?"
"Nick Fury seems to trust you, but now we need you to come in." And stop a trespassing super God from taking over Earth, but otherwise, that'd be all.
"What if I said no?" It's smart to know the consequences and the reason why, almost most of the time. But I am not giving up, this is for Barton.
"I'll persuade you." I smiled, but he kept his frown.
"And what if the," he looked down, once again raised his head up, "the other guy said no?" I'd doubt that would happen.
"You've been more than a year without that incident, I don't think you want to break that streak," I said as I started walking back wards.
He kept continuing, "well every time I did what a want-"
I interrupted, "Doctor, we're facing a global, potential catastrophe." Started to pull up information of the stolen Tesseract on a phone.
He laughed. "All those naive facts we try to avoid."
"This," started showing him the phone by raising it, "is the Tesseract. It has the potential energy to wipe out the planet."
He took out his glasses and puts them on. "What does Fury want me to do? To swallow it?" He remarked, sounding depressed and useless.
"He wants you to find it. Its been taken," Bruce kept reading the digital file, like he's scanning all its data. "It emission a gama signature that is too weak for us to trace. There's no one that knows gama radiation like you do." His head sprung up, I guess after hearing about the gama radiation, it surprised him. "If there was, that's where I'd be." I needed to quickly remind him about that.
"So Fury's not after the monster," taking his glasses off.
"Not that he's told me."
"And he tells you everything?"
I try to counter. "Talk to Fury, he needs you with us-"
"He needs me in a cage..."
"No ones gonna put you in a-" Tried assurance, but I was sadly interrupted.
"Stop lying to me!" Bruce slammed both of his hands on the table as he exclaimed his thoughts. I quickly drew my gun that was under the table. We just stared.
A moment of heavy, intent eye contact occurred. Well, I've never really experienced or witnessed a green, guy, triggered by emotional responses to rampage a city, or a whole country, with violence against one of the largest civilian populations in the entire world... So, I can't really handle this.
Then he apologized, "sorry, that was me. I just wanna see what you'd do," we kept staring. "Why don't we do this the easy way, where you don't use that and the other guy doesn't make a mess. Okay? Natasha?" Okay.
I reached for my earpiece, "Stand down. We're good here."
He realized my little white lie.
"Just you and me?"
~Steve's POV~
I punched, and punched, harder every second, just letting my all of my frustration out. So exhausted about sleeping for decades, up to this point, I don't think I'll be surprised every minute if something new pops up. Every punch to this punching bag is for everyone I have lost and I have hurt. Everything has been tiring and I need to catch up badly, but right now it doesn't matter. Everyone is, gone. From Bucky, Dr. Eskrine, Howard Stark, Carolyn, even stupid HYDRA. And Peggy. Peggy. I should've listened to her, should've gotten out of that plane instead of landing it into the cold. Well now, I stopped pondering just as the punching bag flew across the room and ended up hitting the wall. Hard.
I decided to pick up another one, throw a couple more punches. "Trouble sleeping?" I realized its Director Nick Fury, the man responsible for unfreezing me. The man that operated the mission of awakening me from the frozen slumber.
"Slept for 70 years, sir. I think I already have my bill." I kept on punching, still hitting it.
"Well you should be out celebrating, seeing the world." I looked up from the punching bag. I decided to stop and take a rest, after all, I knew he probably needed me for a mission. Or not. "I went under, the world was at war. And I wake up, they say we won," unwrapping the worn out band while Nick walked closer, "they didn't say we lost."
"We made mistakes along the way, some very recently." Did I become one? I hope not.
"You're here with a mission sir?" I glanced at him holding a file, or folder.
"I am."
"Are you trying to get me back with the world?" I was perspiring, but I finally unwrapped all of my bands from my hands.
"Trying to save it." He held the folder out. I took it and as I opened it, I honestly couldn't believe me eyes. There, lay in the folder, are documents about the Tesseract. "HYDRA secret weapon."
I gave it my look of disgust and despise.
But Nick continued, "Howard Stark fished that out of the ocean while he was looking for you." I looked up at him. Surprisingly Howard Stark knew that I could be alive, or practically unconsciously frozen. "He thought what we'd think, the Tesseract could be the key to unlimited, sustainable energy. That's something the world sorely needs."
Guessing someone must have taken it, so why not bother asking? "Who took it from you?"
"He's name is Loki," weird name, "he's not from around here. There's a lot we have to bring you up to speed on, if you're in. The world has gotten even stranger than you already know."
Ha. "At this point, I doubt anything would surprise me."
"Ten bucks says you're wrong."
I walked over to the punching bags, I decided to bring one back home to my apartment.
"There's a debriefing packet waiting for you back at the apartment." I walked farther to exit the gym.
Although, he asked one more thing, "is there anything you want to tell us about the Tesseract that we ought to know now?"
I took a breath, approaching the gym's exit. "You should have left it in the ocean."
~Tony's POV~
I dove out of the ocean, facing the beautiful Manhattan. Time to bring myself back to my baby, and Pepper, talk to to me. "Keep going at this end, the rest is up to you."
Its a good thing too that I could see her face like FaceTime. Ha! See what I did there? "You disconnected the transmission lines, are we off the grid?" Ah, watchful as always. I mean, ahem, "well, Stark Tower is about to be a beacon of self-sustaining energy." Oh just me, helping mother nature.
"Well, assuming the arc reactive takes over, it actually works?" Babe, of course it does.
"I assume," I immediately answered as I passed a few more buildings, "fire her up." I need to see this. As I arrived, behold, the beautiful, lit up, Christmas-ish Stark Tower. Probably the second happiest place next to Disney World. Just sayin'.
"How does it look?"
"Like Christmas," well, "but with more, me."
"You got to go wide on the public awareness campaign, you need to do some more press." Wow, well not right now. "I'll head to DC tomorrow, I'll be working with the zoning for the next two buildings-"
"Pepper, you're killing me woman. Remember, enjoy the moment?"
"Then get in here, and I will." Yeah, much better.
I landed on the roof, and as I started to step down on the platforms, my machines started to disassemble the suit. Until J.A.R.V.I.S. have to pop up.
"Sir, Agent Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on the line."
"I'm not in," finally removing the robotic mask, "I'm actually out."
"Sir, I'm afraid he's insisting." His voice became apparent of urgency.
"It's fine J.A.R.V.I.S, I got a date."
I just walked in, just as Pepper started talking. "Levels are holding steady, I think-"
"Of course they are," surprising her, "I was directly involved, which leads me to the question, how does it feel, to be a genius?" She's only the genius for the day, but Tony Stark is the genius, everyday.
"Well, I really wouldn't know now would I?"
"What do you mean?" what does she mean? "I mean all this, came from you."
"No, all of this, came from that." She pointed at my chest, and by the way, its not, really.
"Give yourself some credit, please, Stark Tower is your baby. So, give yourself, 12% of the credit." Now I realized on what just came out of my mouth, whoops.
"12%?" Pepper asked as she started walking away.
"An argument could make it 15," I insisted.
"12% for my baby?" She walks farther away from me.
"Well, I do the heavy-lifting, literally I lift the heavy things," Pepper started pouring the champagne, "And sorry, the security room? Yeah, that is all on you."
"Ooh."
"And my private elevator-"
"You mean our elevator,"
"That is teaming with sweaty workmen, I'm gonna pay for all of that. I'll make it up, comment all of the percentages, and I'll settle some one way or another."
She's mixing up thoughts in her mind, "I'm not gonna be that settle."
I give up. "I'll tell you what, the next building will say 'Potts' on the tower.
"Nice."
I sharply inhaled, "But first, could you call your mother?"
Then J.A.R.V.I.S. interrupted the funny, yet mistakenly-shouldn't- have- said-12% -of-the-credit conversation. "Sir, the telephone." Did I even program him to say 'telephone'? "I'm afraid my protocol is being overwritten."
"Stark", yup Coulson is calling, "we need to talk." Sounds urgent, in a sarcastic way.
"You have reached the life decoy of Tony Stark, please leave a message," with some sound effects of Pepper laughing in the background.
"This is urgent."
"Then leave it urgent," behold the sass.
Then all of the sudden, my or I mean our elevator opened up to reveal a Phil Coulson, how wonderful! He does look, uh urgent.
"Security breach! Its on you."
"Mr. Stark."
"Phil! Please, come in." Hold up, Phil?
"Phil?"
"Uh, I can't stay." He manages to comment.
"Uh, his first name is Agent."
"Come on in, we're celebrating!" Okay, how?
"That's why he can't stay."
"We need you to look this over," Coulson handed me a black file, "as soon as possible."
"Um, I don't like to be handed things--"
"I loved to be handed things, so lets trade." Pepper, that is good champagne.
Oh great, we traded.
"Okay, our official consulting hours are between eight and five, every other Thursday-"
"This isn't a consultation." Now, behold Coulson's sass.
"Is this about the Avengers?" whoa, now I need to open this up, "which I know completely nothing about."
Time for explaining to do. "Avengers Initiative was scraped, I thought. And I don't even qualify!"
"I didn't know that either." Phil just looked back and forth between us, Pepper and I
"Yeah and apparently I am volatile, self-obsessed, and I don't play well with others."
"That I did know." Thanks a lot, Pep.
"This isn't about personality profiles anymore." Uh-huh, sure.
"Whatever, Ms. Potts," giving her my hand motion that signals her to come over here, "Got a sec?"
I opened the digital files, all the files opened up to all of the avengers' profiles, and even the Tesseract. Oh, dad, you really shouldn't have got it or else I would've been celebrating this whole time. "You know, I thought we were having a moment."
"Oh, I was having 12% of the moment," okay, behold Ms. Potts' sass.
"This looks serious, Phil is happened to be shaking."
Alright, "how would you know this, and how is he Phil?"
"What is all of this?"
"This is a," with my hands, I spread all the files, "This."
"Okay, I am going to take the jet to DC tonight," she said after scanning the spread digital files all over the digital wall.
I shrugged her, "Tomorrow."
"You have homework, a lot of homework." Point.
"But what if I didn't?"
"You mean when your finished?" She wrapped her arms around my neck and whispered in my ear, well none of your business.
"Square deal."
Pepper then gave me a long peck on my lips. I needed it, honestly. "Work hard."
