29; SEVEN DECADES AGO
~Third Person's POV~
"They're here, sir." Maria Hill alerts Director Fury whilst managaing the whole control bridge of the helicarrier. Fury turned to her from his monitors, and the whole time ever since they defeated Loki and brought Amelia back, that frown never disappeared from his face.
He then follows her outside to meet them on their landed quinjet, "Bring them in."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Director Weaver and her small crew of geniuses took the transportation of a larger-sized quinjet due to all their equipment and well, belongings that will last them a week's worth of surviving at the No. 22 helicarrier.
Simmons and Fitz though believed that they will have the experience, and mission, of their lifetime. But they kept in mind of the heavy seriousness, efficiency, wit, intelligence, and observation it'll take to walk in the park. Because this isn't an ordinary park to stroll into nor is it a test. Despite the fact that they faced things similar before, this won't just be a difficult algorithm to crack.
The good thing though was that they took their research during the ride.
Because Dr. Kate gathered enough empirical evidence to support their numerous scientific explanations about Amelia's anatomy through countless minutes of analysis and examination. Although to FitzSimmons, they are hungry for more.
The crew exited the quinjet with their belongings and tablets to keep them in track through the whole process. They always thought they were running out of time. Afterall, its instinct and it finishes their tasks much quicker with the vision.
The wind blew straight at their faces, they eyes squinting to get a better vision of the pair and a couple more people approaching them.
"Remember," Agent Weaver called to the pair of geniuses, "we've discussed protocol and regulations. You may have experience, but this mission is way above your clearance." She reminded them one last time as they firmly nodded in reply.
Fury and Hill finally arrive to where the crew are standing. "Agent Hill, pleasure to work together once again," Director Weaver took out her hand as Maria shook it. They exchanged warm smiles from each other, while well, Fury simply refused to show any display at all. Unlike FitzSimmons, well, they were more than giddy. "And Agent Fitz and Simmons, I believe their names sound too familiar in the name of S.H.I.E.L.D." Weaver adds as Maria shook their hands as well.
"Welcome to helicarrier No. 22, agents. Actually, geniuses." Fury greets them, shaking the young agents' hands, showing no actual warm impression. The geniuses smile immediately faded away because they realized to get back to reality and be, serious.
"Director Fury, we better start, preparations and well, work." Fitz says affirmatively as he hurries with Simmons to their equipment that's already brought inside. Leaving Fury, Hill, and Weaver frozen there.
"FitzSimmons?" Fury asks, but his tone wasn't questioningly like bad news, as he watches the crew enter the main helicarrier. Weaver nods her head, "Fury, they can work everything out. I mean, sir, they've got this."
Fury couldn't help but agree more about the two geniuses.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So, that's the, um, story so far." Steve states as he rubs his bloodshot eyes of exhaustion. Abbey stared at Captain America with sad eyes, feeling like something is tearing her piece by piece whilst listening to the 'story'. Her friend's shot. Yeah, sure there are other women in the world that are probably being forced in the process of sexual intercourse, are tortured meaninglessly by their partners or 'friends', or murdered postmortem and obviously in an undeniably sickening manner, but this is her best friend. It is completely instinct to be dead worried about a trustworthy and caring loved one.
Abbey thought she's trapped in a dizzy world filled with misled and dangerous actions. She decided to snap back to reality by pounding a fist on her table where her iMac sits, startling Steve. "Location. Coordinates. Now." Abbey demanded at Steve furiously, but he was too tired to argue with Fury on sending Abbey Myers a ride to the helicarrier.
"Abbey, I don't know. I'm exhausted, worried, scared..."
"No, Steve. Or Captain..." She shakes her head to get to the point, "how about this. Just, just contact the S.H.I.E.L.D emergency contact call protocol on whatever device you're using, how about that?"
Steve sighs, nodding, "fine. I guess you can call this a computer..."
Abbey gave him a confused look, reminding him of well, "oh, because of you know..."
"Oh. Okay..."
Moments of tense silence distance the two through the computer screen, both being consumed alive by worry, nervousness, and fright. At least in one way they're both similar in this situation.
"Captain Rogers?" Agent Derek interrupted the comfortable silence between the two people, drawing the attention of both, "they're here."
That perked him up, immediately making him spring up from his seat as Abbey gotten more confused. "I'll be right there. Debrief me on the way," Steve tells Agent Derek who nods and temporarily leaves. Steve faces the confused Abbey, "oh, they're the main crew that will, yeah."
She nods understandingly in reply, "I see. Alert me, alright?"
Steve sighs, "Alright. Good bye, Abbey."
"See ya." She replies back as he ends the call, and yes, he figured it out.
That little dork just cares too much for my best friend, huh? Abbey though to herself as she smiles a small, non-sarcastic smirk, cradling her little dog in her arms on the seat of her desk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FitzSimmons already seemed too prepared, all of their clothing already into the protective gear and usual lab coat.
Steve had Agent Derek escort him to where they were currently setting up, as well where Fury and Director Weaver are as well. "Fury!" Steve calls at Nick, making him turn around to the pair approaching him.
"Captain. I've heard you contact Ms. Myers..." Nick says as Steve walks past him, "Its doctor." Steve corrects Nick, who just shrugs in response. He straightens his posture as he approaches Director Weaver.
"But they're here." Then FitzSimmons enter the laboratory whilst Fury introduces Director Weaver to Steve.
"Pleasure, ma'am. I-I mean, Director..." Steve greets Director Weaver softly, his voice cracking while shaking her hand unsteadily. FitzSimmons approached the trio of directors and a captain, both giddy and excitedly.
"Oh. My. Gooodd..." Fitz remarks as soon as he landed eyes on the star spangled man with a plan. Jemma's jaw remained gaping.
Steve faces them with his piercing blue eyes struck with red, and sniffles. "Erm..."
"Captain Rogers, these are Agents Jemma Simmons and Leopold Fitz of the S.H.I.E.L.D Science and Technology Division at your service for the investigation of the current condition of Amelia Vale." Weaver introduces them to the Captain, who shook their hands. Jemma and Fitz were so nervous, they shook his hand too firmly and giddily, "Captain Steve Rogers!!" They both said in unison excitedly.
"Agents Fitz and Simmons." He croaked.
Their smiles immediately vanished once they realized the captain's tone, all eerie and sad. Yet, inside, they couldn't contain themselves. "Captain, erm, were are currently doing further examination of Ms. Vale's condition. Explanation will be debriefed as soon as he have enough of the information everyone needs answers for... you know." Simmons explains to Steve, who just nods his head.
"Thank you." Simmons eyes widened because the mighty Captain just thanked her.
"Oh, erm also, we believe that this type of 'condition' doesn't necessarily need any further, erm, quarantine or isolation. Ms. Vale can have some exposure to, visitors. There's no serious contagion that can emit from her that is contagious and could possibly harm anyone else. Although, this sort of contagion is very unknown to us, obviously. Or else, you know..." Fitz cleared his throat, adding the other necessary information that they have found recently. He started realizing that he's already rambling.
This perked up Steve though, even through the ramble, "well, that's great to know."
"Yes, cap, I-I mean, Captain." Fitz agrees whilst trembling with excitement as Simmons lightly elbows him in the gut, Fitz raising his hands in his defense. "Hey! Sorry, but I am freaking out!" He whispers at her through gritted teeth and clenched jaw. "Like, who wouldn't freak out when Captain--"
"Yes, I know that Fitz, but we still have to continue further analysis! Let's just forget fan girling or fan boying! Its like were fan-bothering!!" Simmons whispers back at him through gritted teeth as well, making Director Weaver, Director Fury, and Captain Rogers raise their eyebrow at them. The pair notices, smiling sheepishly. "Erm, Fitz..."
"Jemma..."
"Isn't Dr. Banner also erm--"
"Ah yes, yes, we-- we should look for Dr. Banner..."
"Yeah, yeah. Right..." Jemma replies as they turn awkwardly around and head towards the lab where Bruce and Tony is both working and grieving frantically.
"The other way," Nick calls at them as they both make the wrong turn.
"Thank you, sir!" Jemma thanks Fury as they run to the right direction of Banner's lab.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Jemma's POV~
"I can't believe it Fitz! We just met one, Avenger!!" I announce excitedly, because oh the gods, we just freaking met Captain America!!
"I know right! Like, one down, six to go!" He replies back as I nod my head while we make our way towards the laboratory. "Or five and a half to go..."
"Poor Amelia Vale..." I pondered for a few seconds on what it could be like, unconscious. "Well, at least we saw her, sleeping..." I try cheering my friend up, but he inserts, "unconsciously sleeping."
"Fitz... That doesn't make any sense..." I reason to him, but we finally arrived at the laboratory. "Oh my Lord." My eyes landed on the other two Avengers.
"We're- we're here. And oh my gosh is that Tony Stark?! And Dr. Banner!!" Fitz points out, making me smile like imbeciles we were when we met freaking Captain America. Jemma, keep a hold of yourself...
"Fitz! Keep a hold of ourselves, shall we?"
He sighs as we pass through the metal doors, "we shall."
We approach Dr. Banner, who is scanning like a scanner through gathered data that we and Dr. Kate have just gathered recently from the looks of it. Whilst Mr. Stark solved algorithms here and there on multiple monitors.
Our shoes made noises against the hard metal floor, causing them to look up and face us. Oh my gosh, oh my gosh... Okay, Jemma, just be okay... Everything will be o--
"Um, hi?" Dr. Banner asks as, snapping me from my thoughts. Crap.
"Erm, I believe you are Dr. Banner, correct?" I ask them, Tony waving us off. "Look, miss, if you want autographs or anything--"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, mistakenly Mr. Stark, are you assuming that S.H.I.E.L.D scientists would request a picture?" Fitz interrupts Mr. Stark, making him turn away. He reasons, "well, you look awfully young to be S.H.I.E.L.D scientists. Unless you were undergraduates like I was..."
"Look, what Tony's trying to ask is, what are you guys doing here?" Dr. Banner summarizes for Mr. Stark as I clear my throat, Fitz already grabbing a tablet, handing one to me. They watch us warily and with surprised expression. "Dr. Banner, I am Agent Simmons and that is Agent Fitz. We were brought here onto the request of Fury from the S.H.I.E.L.D Science and Technology Division. Sir." I quickly introduce ourselves as Fitz nods along.
Dr. Banner seemed approved of us, "oh, then I apologize for the misconceptions." I gave him a warm smile as Mr. Stark adds, "sorry, we're just exhausted." One thing that I'll always noticed is how exhausting they awfully look.
"Oh its alright, we just get that a lot." Fitz peeks in as I start scanning more of the gathered data that I haven't studied yet during our quinjet ride to the helicarrier. "Fascinating..." I mumble. I mean, look at all of this data! Its like an alien in disguise of a form of a human! The anatomy is fascinating and- and just wow...
Dr. Banner nods, "Amelia's anatomy is different in many ways than a normal human being. For instance, her cells are immune to the continuous and drastic changes in body temperature... Like fireproof and avoidance from being frozen, that can eventually lead to the cell dying. That's what also stabilizes her immunity to the common diseases, even if her temperature can expose her to the flu or a simple cold." He quickly explains as I nod along.
"Again, fascinating, well, not really..." I mutter but they heard it loud and clear. Fitz pipes in, "Dr. Banner, we have found a way to even the examine her wound much closely. What do you think of our profound method?" He asks hurriedly, adding, "I've sent the method to your tablet."
Dr. Banner grabs his tablet and analyzes it quickly, like a judge analyzing a newly, turned-in essay. He nods, "hm, I approve. Its adequate for her condition. But out of curiosity, how fast were you able to come up with one, Agent Fitz?"
Fitz smiled even brighter, "oh, while you were explaining to Jemma, yeah." Show off...
Mr. Stark then turned to us, with raised eyebrows indicating he's hopefully impressed. "That's great, guys. You may perform the method, FitzSimmons." I giggle, because well... He gave me a look, "what's so funny?"
"Mr. Stark," I clear my throat as I follow Fitz to gather equipment and prepare and perform the method, "that's how we get referred to awfully a lot."
Fitz nods in agreement, as Mr. Stark just shrugs and Dr. Banner just laughs.
I guess that's some laughter they've gotten so far. That's good.
~Third Person's POV~
~20 minutes after FitzSimmons finally finish their research~
Steve enters the new infirmary warily, Clint and Natasha watching on the other side of the glass wall. Both were skeptical about the pair of geniuses news, so they bothered to just watch her from the outside. Thor enters with Steve, saddened at his friend's current state.
Amelia was carefully and properly transferred to a new infirmary, where more people can have access to so the Avengers were free to take a angst visit. But the wires running through her didn't change.
Although, her symptoms no longer worsened, no auroras, nor highlights in her hair rapidly appearing. The temperature became finally lukewarm, at least not similar to the unbearable heat or the freezing cold.
Things like these may be happening on the outside, but inside of Amelia? Barely is there a difference. Pain and violet is just everywhere inside.
"Any news? Besides, well," Thor asks with a quiet voice, frowning. Steve sadly shook his head, "nothing. Not yet."
Thor sighs as a few moments of silence occurred.
On the other side of the glass, Natasha and Clint decided to watch her with nervousness, especially Clint and Steve. Both felt much closer to her, even if Clint knew her those eight years ago. Natasha felt, well, mixed. Saddened, angry, then anxious. And worried over Clint's downs of the saddening situation. "Clint, its surprising she's stabilized, even from the visual side effects..." She says slowly, Clint sniffled, but not crying. "Hey, at least her heart's steady, pulse steady, vitals are functioning well..."
Clint sighs, "somehow, I don't know. I'm skeptical of Dr. Kate's ideas..."
She shakes her head as she turns to her fellow assassin, "they are not ideas. She'll be fine, Barton. Agent Fitz and Simmons did great, and they'll finish it. Look at me."
He looks at her with stern eyes, his lips pursing, "Natasha, my patience is running out."
She protests, "then just try or believe that she'll make it. We'll find a cure. We'll find that bullet and get it out of her and we all move on. Loki will be sent back to Asgard with Thor, Tony will resume to fixing his precious tower, Banner will be somewhere around the world doing something, you and I will continue with our duties. Heck, Steve and Amelia probably will finally go on to that date."
Clint looks at Natasha with disbelief, but faith starts resuming withing him after hearing her determined words. She continues, "she's the last mountain we'll climb over. We just have to try to make it to the top."
He stares at her, "wow, Nat. That's like the most inspirational thing you've ever said in my whole years that I've been friends with you."
She blinks blankly, because she rephrased the words in her head. "Huh, I know right..."
And for the first time ever since the moment they've returned back at the helicarrier, he smiles radiantly, letting the words sink in his mind. With that, Natasha smile ever so radiantly back, and for once, they were... Happy. "Clint, those words were truthful and all I wanted was a smile, Hawkeye."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thor looked down at her with eye filled with sadness at her bedside, Steve leaning his back against the wall with crossed arms and stares up at the ceiling. Thankfully up to this point, those side effects simply vanished, except inside her closed eyes, violet is still all over. She's pale blue, and dark bags vast underneath her eyes.
Thor decided to pull up a chair and sit at her bedside, contemplating on what could happen next... "Never would have I thought my own brother would take this too far." He says to himself, Steve faces him with his tired face. He continues, "Loki was innocent, witty, and even followed the rules with his mischief. But now, he's consumed of the evil, draining all of my brother away." Scanning her beautiful face, he sighs, her face reminding him of Jane. His beloved Jane.
Steve as well pulled up a chair and sat next to her bedside, "Thor, people change. Actually, gods change. Everyone does." A minute of silence passed by because Thor's thoughts were overridden by Jane. Screw Loki.
"I miss her, you know. You're not the only one smitten." He jokes, but no smiles appeared on either ones' faces.
But it caught Steve's urge to converse, "oh yeah? Never thought a god would well, be smitten over a mortal." He said 'mortal' in a mockingly lavish, British accent, imitating Loki's velvety one.
Thor looked up at him from the other side of the bedside with raised eyebrows, "Captain, I only knew the woman for a short period of time. I vowed to see her again, but, I was unsuccessful." He said every word tiredly and melancholy yet meaningfully.
Steve sighs in response, "what's her name?"
He was silent for a moment, finally a small smile erupts from his lips from just thinking of her name. "Jane. Jane Foster."
Steve slightly nods as he held Amelia's lifeless hand, "honestly, you're not the only one smitten..."
"We all can see that."
"Three years since my revival. I got three years to move one and I hopefully took the chance."
"Steve, I think you did. And you are successful." Thor emphasizes for him, as he stood up from his chair. "But remember, you don't have an alarm of any sort. The thing about you Midguardians is that you have so much time, you just don't realize it."
He reaches to the exit, looking back at his friend one last time, "and for this once, try not leaving her side. That is where you have to take your time."
Steve pondered about it in space, then finally looks back at the sleeping beauty. "I guess I won't have much of that now, wouldn't I?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wrong. Amelia may be unconscious but her conscience isn't: her ears were open the whole time. But her sight is filled with the violet, taste is bland of her dried saliva, touch is occupied with numbness and scent is very faint but hearing? Crystal clear. Steve, just try and wait and see. I'll be awake. I have to...
That's right; those were Amelia's thoughts. Her conscience.
Take your time, love...
AGH!!
Inside of Amelia were electrostatic energy roaming through her. Sadly, the outside world is too oblivious, yet. A faint yet powerful and quick shock rung through her ear drums. THUMP THUMP~~ZAAPP!!
Steve, Steve, t-take your time. My mission is just to wake up and get through this. But how...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He still stared down at her with her hand on his. He felt so tired, and felt like this monster inside of him couldn't help but just consume him.
Clint and Natasha decided to leave the infirmary and head to the helicarrier's cafeteria to grab a small bite. Or a small drink of coffee.
Bruce, Tony, Jemma, and Fitz continued skimming through data, hopeful to find the cure.
~10 minutes later~
Steve's heavy eyelids dozed him off on her bedside, his hand holding on to hers.
But with all the remaining strength she possesses, her eyes finally fluttered opened to the bright lights glaring at her.
All at once, her breaths escaped her mouth, alarming the super soldier awake. "Wha-- Amelia?" He tiredly says as he looks at her with tired eyes. "Amelia!" He exclaims in a faint whisper, reeling her to face him. "St-steve?" Her eyes were adjusting to the lights, but to the sight to his face were just fine.
A small smile curled at his lips, relieved, "thank god!" He stood up from his chair as he hovers over her, "you're finally awake!"
She faintly laughs, "yeah. I, I am..."
Her eyes then slowly start closing, Steve protests, "wait, please! Stay awake!" No, he won't bear to see her back into her unbearable slumber...
"Huh? Oh..." She grumbles because another shock just shook her whole body. "It feels..." No, not another one. Its too much. I'm loosing. I'm giving up...
"Amelia, hey, stick with me... Don't go back to sleep." Steve reassures as she faintly nods her head. Why can't I do this? This is too difficult... "Look, I'll get agents Fitz and Simmons in here, they- they'll know what to do. Even Banner, and-and..."
"Who?" Her voice was too quiet, too faint to hear.
He clears his throat as he gulps back the incoming tears, "Agent Fitz and Agent Simmons. Weaver's crew. They came to help." She smiled a small smirk at his concern, but another shock came through to her whole body like lightning in a thunderstorm. Through the whole two hours, Amelia felt like she had no choice but to loose faith.
"Steve... I-I don't know. I can't..." Then she gasped all air at once from her mouth, startling Steve. He held onto her hand, "no. Please don't do this. We have, ti-time. Fight. We-we can work it out." A tear slid down his cheek, the teardrop landing on hers. "I promise you, that-that bullet will be out of you, you-you'll be living the life after this."
"I-I don't think-- I'll try..." She mutters, her heavy eyelids forcing her hazel eyes to a close. "If we wait any longer, I don't think..."
She inhales sharply, then exhales, "I guess this- this could be my only choice left."
The tears immediately poured down slowly, as he clung to her hand and rested his cheek on it. "No... Don't give up just yet..."
As this moment of silence occurs, Steve was feeling a deja vu. Somehow, it felt like something or the time he was in that HYDRA plane those seven decades ago... The last conversation with Peggy Carter. But I guess, he was just too oblivious to really feel it.
When he mentioned of living the life, Amelia's mind immediately transitioned to the thoughts of the date he asked earlier. She felt like she couldn't be any happier. She wasn't Caroline or even Peggy, but that was seven decades ago. So, a small gasp escape her lips, "Steve?" Another shock stoke through her body, making her slightly tense and flinch up.
Steve sniffles, "Amelia..."
She sighs slowly, "I'm gonna need a rain check on that date." Amelia smirked a tiny smirk, making him finally realize; its deja vu. The words 'rain check' clicked way, way back.
"All- all right. Just think of this, a small date. Effortless, small date. Even with a small date, it has the time. A week after all, all of this, we'll have that small, effortless date. A date with lots of time to ourselves. Got it?" She smiles, showing her pearly whites, the sight Steve waited since the end of the line to see.
"Just try and fight and-and finish this, Amelia. Don't you dare give up. Understood?" He asks her firmly, making her smile wider. "Understood, Captain."
She sighs, "you know, you could just tell me where we're going. After all, isn't it small and effortless of sort?"
He chuckles softly, then again, the sound that her ears were longing to hear ever since the return at the helicarrier and her small slumber. "I'll just show you where. Just, just fight."
"Well, I'd expect it a little bit nicer like a little lunch or a cafe. Or an ice cream joint--!"
"Just be all right. Okay?"
"Huh, okay..." She says her final words before she drifts away into another painful yet peaceful slumber. It saddened Steve, but thankfully the tears stopped rushing down his face. He gazed at her closed eyelids, planting a small and soft kiss at her forehead. Fight, that's all she's got to do.
Then all of a sudden, Fitz entered the infirmary. "Captain? We found the cause of the contagion."
~While Steve and Amelia are talking~
Tony watched surveillance of the new infirmary with queasiness, through the monitors in Bruce and Tony's own laboratory. The surveillance is very vital to Amelia's protection, from supervision on whose entering the infirmary, how the treatment of her condition is being performed, everything.
Fitz and Simmons decided to research and assess more of the main causes and effects Amelia's being put through. Lots of things are unknown to them.
Back to Tony, he felt uneasy and anxious, his patience running out. Like an hourglass, he felt like time is running out.
"No... Don't give up just yet..." Tony heard Steve say through the monitors, until Bruce approached him with the same tablet in his hand. Along with some good news to spare.
"FitzSimmons and their crew, Dr. Kate's crew, and I are getting closer. Debriefing will be soon." He declares with little triumph, hinting a small smile on Tony's lips.
"Good. Do you still need anything anymore?" Tony asks him urgently, urging to help.
"Not at the moment. Even though if you're not a medical doctor or biochemist of any sort, the equipment are helping, Tony. Don't worry. We'll make it. She'll make it." Bruce's reassuring words made Tony sighs in some relief. But he was still afraid inside.
"Thanks."
A moment of silence passes as Steve and Amelia converse in the live footage. Bruce taps and taps whilst solving algorithms and all these equations to finding the cure on his tablet. Until Tony broke the comfortable silence.
"Remember when I mentioned on how this current relationship is starting typically?" He asks Bruce, who looks up from his tablet, not really curios. So far on the live footage whilst watching, Tony couldn't help himself but ponder about how he used to mock the beginning of 'relationships'.
Bruce nods, not really interested because of his concentration being overwhelmed by current events. "Tony, that was like yesterday."
Tony sighs, "yeah, but a girl being shot and on the verge of the end of the line of her life isn't typical. Add the guy bawling..."
"True..." Bruce agrees, his attention reeled in finally to watch the surveillance, live footage. "Another thing that won't be typical would be the fact that she's going to make it." He adds.
"Yet the last thing that isn't typical will be the happy ending. Well, something like that."
Bruce was about to say something, when finally Jemma bursts through the laboratory doors. "Dr. Banner? Mr. Stark? We found it. Time for debriefing."
