17; CONFRONTATIONS
"...fall pretty damn hard. If I don't know what made me fall in this bottomless pit, I will find what it is. Anyways, Steve Rogers changes my harmless intentions to myself over this mission, and because of last night, he has no idea of how about something that he just said can stay in my mind. There are more things that he has done or said, but I say that was unforgettable."
The recording in my phone was simply entitled Feelings, as I was somehow impressed that this was like one of the first few attempts that I have ever been descriptive about my, well, feelings. That was the third time I've been listening to every word I have said about him, and I don't regret saying all of it. Actually, now I kinda do because I just realized all that cheesiness that was smothered on every single word. Or not.
I stare blankly at the ceiling of my room, laying on my unmade bed. My arms are out stretched on the unmade bed, and my legs sticking together. Honestly, I don't want to help Tony with his decryption programmer, watch every attempted interrogation to Loki's schemes, practically I don't want to open up. What I want is isolation from everyone on the other side of my door.
Earbuds are kept inserted into my ears as the recording finally ends for the third time. Still couldn't get over the fact that Maggie first heard about this. I was expecting Abbey, even Fury. There are other facts that I cannot face, but I remind myself to never forget this fact: I'm an Avenger, and I am going to avenge my mother's death. And sure, why not avenge Jeremy Cervetti's death too. Same goes to anyone who suffered Loki's madness so far, Earth and Asgard.
Since I really couldn't do anything, so I decided to fix my waves, my hair basically. Raising myself from the comfortable bed, I make my way towards my bathroom. As I switch the light on inside my bathroom, I stare to the mirror and notice frost appearing on the sides of the glass. What the hell? What am I, the snow queen or something? I grunt, immediately evaporating the frozen moisture out of my mirror.
Disassembling my ponytail off my hair, I part the hair far off to the left, brushing the soft and delicate waves with my brush. I hum, some.
My hair styling in front of my mirror was interrupted as someone knocked on my door. Well, just in time as I finished the note on 'mine'. "Amelia?" I recognize a female's voice, but unsure which female it is.
"I'll be there!" I cry out from my bathroom as I set down the brush and then took another glance in the mirror. Okay, that's good. Shutting the lights off and the bathroom door, I hurriedly approach the door and open it, well duh. But I didn't really expect it to be Maria. Agent Maria Hill.
Maria has a stern look on her face, and I recognize right away for it screaming that I am in trouble. And I just know the reason why. "Fury needs to talk to you." How, wonderful.
I nod my head, my heart beating faster due to the fact that well, I read her mind and trouble. "Alright," okay, keep your cool, "what does he want to--"
"I'll escort you to his office," she cuts me off slightly harshly, "and he'll tell you himself." Oh wow, it doesn't mean that I contact the Rising Tide its like 'ah! Betrayal!' I gulp, "O-okay." I hate getting myself into, this. Literally, I'm like those typical people that begs for destiny that I won't get, you know. Even though I don't believe in such concepts.
Maria gave me way so I could step out of my room, and lock the door. She starts walking away, motioning me to follow her to Fury's office. The other agents we passed kept eyeing us, like stop and stare, I guess from Maria's face. Her face was stern and straight while I kept a calm face. I can hear the clanging of our boots because first, it was so silent when the agents we passed were stunned at the stern Maria and second, well basically the metal floors.
We passed a series of corridors and hallways, eventually leading to a simple door, a door simple than any of the rooms in the helicarrier. Like, its a single metal door although, with a scanner on the side of the door frame. Maria scanned her badge, which the scanner announces, "Agent Maria Hill," showing that she has level 9 clearance, the door slide open. She let me enter first as I spot Nick in front of a large monitor, facing the S.H.I.E.L.D logo in the center of the digital monitor.
In the middle of the room stood a desk, but I would say everything here is more extraordinary than a normal principal's office, just to describe the rest inside. The technology is obviously more advanced, but as I kept scanning the room, Nick finally faces me. Maria left the room with myself and Nick alone, giving me a cold nod. Is she really that mad that I carelessly hack S.H.I.E.L.D? Unlike Maria, Nick was less stern, but he kept a straight face.
I kept my arms crossed behind me and my back straight. He clears his throat, "How are the gloves working out?" Wow, start with a chill question. I scoff, letting a small pause pass us, "oh, c'mon Nick, I know why I'm here. But, thank you anyways."
He now frowns as he sits on the side of his desk, crossing his arms. I cross my arms as well, "you didn't mention your involvement with the Rising Tide in the beginning of Project 45. There are more, but why?" I kept a straight face, cocking my eyebrow, "you didn't ask. But don't worry, in the end, I ultimately quit that organization."
"Did your mother die without knowing about it?" I face downwards, couldn't believe he retaliated by mentioning my mother. Sighing, I instead reply with a question, "Nick, have you gotten the call?"
He sighs, letting a long pause occur, "I have. There are more news, but back to the topic. You just made a rookie mistake while communicating with your resources. A rookie mistake. I knew you as a master hacktivist, Amelia." Opening my mouth, he cuts me off, "I can tell the CIA has gotten you very desperate."
Nodding slowly and rubbing my eyes, I reply, "how about you? Wouldn't you want to know, straightaway? Its been almost more than a freaking week just for them to call and inform."
"I know is that they function slower than S.H.I.E.L.D, but patience is the key to the lock. I know you just picked the lock." I start taking steps forward as I rest my hands on my sides, he continues, "it wasn't our priority right now, but my priority is to help you move on and focus on life with this mission and opportunity."
I scoff, "now I'm starting to believe you just want me to be in Avengers Initiative. All because of this sudden opportunity, just use my abilities like Steve's serum, Tony's suit, and Thor's hammer. Besides, the Rising Tide I believe just threatened this organization like once. And lemme guess--"
"Amelia, they have threatened other worldwide organizations by revealing classified information more than once. And second, I didn't offer you just for that, but for a promise. Remember, I am here to protect you." gee, I guess that helps a lot. "But did your mother die without knowing your involvement with the Rising Tide?"
"She knew about it, and she insisted that I leave the organization immediately." I ultimately reply, fighting the urge to not admit these things. "So, you just wanted me to come here just to confront me of my involvement with a harmless and less prioritized organization, now?" Oh, see? Sometimes when I become honest with my confrontation against the highest levels of authority around the place, somehow I don't expect it to be that, lame.
But, my other possible option is that there's more on what he has to inform. And it probably isn't a problem. Nick's grave silence made that option seem more possible, now I have no idea what possibilities are there now. He sighs, while I uncrossed my arms, "Yes. S.H.I.E.L.D works with hacktivists as well, they just don't use our database out of desperation and for reasons that S.H.I.E.L.D doesn't plan to fix or give an excuse. This will be your first warning." He raised his voice when he explained the desperation part, I ignore the warning part because I'll probably won't do that every again. Not allowing my carelessness get over me again. Although, he continues, "Although, that's not the only reason why you're here..." Knew it.
My expression softens, realizing Nick just trailed his own words off. Is it that, bad? "I understand that I may hack for my own purposes, but not through S.H.I.E.L.D's database. Very well then, what else?" Anticipating for his added responses, I couldn't help but ponder the possibilities. It also made me remember that the Cervetti Feathers and the victim's bodies are coming home finally this morning. I immediately spot a clock on the monitor, and the time says its 7:03 a.m. Everyone should be up by now.
"Amelia, Agent Gregg of the CIA informed me that Stella and Caleb Cervetti were trying to reach you throughout the whole mission..." My brows were knitted together in astonishment. I did not expect them at all.
My step-grandparents. They are so overprotective over me, even though Jeremy may be those womanizer types so he most likely had another wife, but they consider me as their precious grandchild. My mother is Jeremy's second wife, so I practically have a stepbrother/s or sister/s, never met them or him or her. Look, these particular Cervetti's worry me due to the lack of freedom over their loved ones, so I rarely ever contact them. I met them numerous times before Jeremy and mom were married, and believe me, they're the type to pamper and spoil you and not let you go without being heavily guarded.
"They threatened the CIA that if you won't come and discuss, well you know, at their mansion over in Siesta Keys. They 'need' you." I sensed the exaggerated 'need', because they really do over exaggerate on quite a lot of things.
My eyes widen, I mean like Caleb Cervetti practically runs Cervetti Consolidated and I forgot about Cervetti Centralized, holy shit. "They literally have the guts to threaten S.H.I.E.L.D and the CIA just for them to know my whereabouts? That's, um," Nick faintly chuckles, "its bullshit. Its a dumb ass thing to do, but I told Agent Gregg to let them do the honors of informing them that you're here. But I know that they were serious about the, meeting. I guess that's what grandparents do." OH GREAT. Now that they know that I am involved with a S.H.I.E.L.D mission right now, oh my lord.
"Step-grandparents but, do I really have to leave? I can't miss this, war. Nick, my I believe my priorities are helping this team. I am officially part of Avengers Initiative." My head spun with reality questions like is it possible that they have to hand over Cervetti Centralized over to me? One of the only remaining people to inherit the company, even though that I have never done any of this? If I don't come, will the threats come to reality and harm both organizations? Why the fuck does this have to happen?!
Nick shakes his head, making me a little furious and overthink more. "That's your choice..."
"Nick! So, if I come to that 'meeting', I will loose the chance of fighting with, these people. Or, if I don't come to visit my step-grandparents, the threats will jump into reality and harm both you guys and the CIA! This is really fucking funny..." I'm gasping for air, I mean, wait, what threats? Hold on, forget about that, its the freaking Cervettis and they certainly don't fool around. Who knows? Nick finally rose up from his seating position and put a really serious face mask on, "Amelia Elnora Vale, its up to you. And I hate to break it to you, but there's more."
I run my hand through my hair frantically, prepping myself for what's gonna come next, "What the hell?!" I sarcastically exclaim, but his response didn't surprisingly shook me that hard. "You have to choose between the FBI and S.H.I.E.L.D. The CIA wants you to suspend your duties from this mission as well--"
"No. I will cooperate with both the FBI and S.H.I.E.L.D therefore residing my future coroner duties with FBI, but I definitely won't suspend my duties in Loki's madness," I immediately reply both of Nick's answers, who is satisfied with my loyalty of this mission. Which I am surprisingly very loyal to... But I am not easily giving up this new career with S.H.I.E.L.D and my occurring one with the FBI. "Look, since when do you follow the CIA anyways?"
"The World Security Council 'recommended' this towards the CIA so they could forward it to us," I sensed apostrophes on the recommended part, so he was almost forced. I guess I have no choice. Staring down at the floor, intense silence filled Nick's office. "I guess I have no choice now, do I?"
"No, Amelia," Nick rested a hand on his desk, "I won't let the Council order one of the greatest legacies in S.H.I.E.L.D. From all of this, I know you don't want to be suspended from this mission, but it turns out you have no choice because you have to visit the rest of the Cervettis. After all of this, you are residing your coroner duties with the FBI and examine victim's bodies. Then you can become an agent and Avenger of S.H.I.E.L.D, with the supervising officer of your choice. Throughout this whole conversation, isn't just what I said is what you've wanted?"
I respond with a determined expression on my face because he just stated what I now wanted to do. I don't care if it'll take up most of my time and life, but oh well. "Yeah." I reply a little quietly, like a small mutter. Then, I crossed my arms and looked at him straight in the eye, "so, I really have to leave?"
Then all of a sudden, the large monitor in Nick's office starts flashing red, with the words 'virus detected' in all capitalized letters and red, then underneath the set of words says 'unauthorized access.' Tony...
Nick finally became furious, but I can tell he kept it inside. A virus was detected throughout S.H.I.E.L.D's database, "what's the source of the virus?" I ask, cocking an eyebrow and smirking, expecting the answer to be J.A.R.V.I.S, or technically Tony.
"Wipe that smirk off your face, 'cause I know damn well who it is."
Narrator: While Amelia rests in her room, Steve's own confrontation against Nick is finished. Now Steve starts searching for Amelia.
~Steve's POV~
"Hey, have any of you guys seen Amelia?"
I enter Stark's and Dr. Banner's laboratory as I kept looking for Amelia. My talk with Fury wasn't frightening or the fact that I am in trouble or anything stupid like that, its just that he requests for me to keep things around here in order. You know, keep an eye out for things on the team and everywhere on the helicarrier, I guess that's my responsibility as captain after all.
Anyways, I asked Stark and Dr. Banner about Amelia's whereabouts because she would usually come down to the training arena with me, and well, I certainly don't want to miss sparing and training together-- oh, fudge that. Lame excuse for my conscience, but its mostly, well, why not just be man enough?
I was about to ask her that after all of this, you know, fighting and in the end hopefully defeating Loki, I want to ask her out. On a date.
Look, I don't even know if she's feels, comfortable about it because of what just happened recently and well we are currently searching for this four dimensional cube so. But I hope she's gonna cut out for one because I'm here for her. Hopefully she hasn't forgotten on what I've said last night. Also, I have to move on, due to the fact that its been three years since my revival, and almost everyone I love is, dead. I don't know any less harsher way to put it out. I guess besides Amelia. She isn't dead. But, I don't know what she sees in me, so I guess I'll just have to find out when I ask her.
Back to reality, I remember that I still have to focus. Stark smirked after her mention, while Dr. Banner kept scanning Loki's scepter, which seems to be feeding information to the 'science bros'. As how she would call them. "Spangles, we haven't seen her since this morning. She's single by the way, her last relationship wa--"
"You have to focus on the problem, Mr. Stark." Wait, what does he mean by her last relationship? And did he really took research?
He finally looks up from the monitor, that annoying smirk still plastered on his. "And could that problem may be Amelia? Or the cube, like our mission always was?"
I reply seriously, "I meant by the cube obviously, Mr. Stark." Rubbing off the question about Amelia, I start approaching their station.
"Look, you think I'm not? Why did Fury call us and why now? What isn't he telling us?" He repetitively questions our mission, having some annoyance in his tone. He is my ego match. Then he adds, "I can't do the equations unless I have all the variables."
It got me thinking, "you think Fury's hiding something?" Bruce finally raised his head from the scepter, listening intently to the brewing conversation.
"He's a spy, Captain, he's the spy. His secrets have secrets." And those secrets are locked in S.H.I.E.L.D, somewhere. Because of that, it triggered to overwhelm my curiosity. Tony then points to Dr. Banner, "its bugging him too, isn't it?"
Bruce then turned back to the scepter, but he didn't continue to examine the object. "Uh... I just wanna finish my work here, and..." He bobbles the words.
"Doctor?" I ask Bruce, trying to ignore Tony's repetitive questions.
Bruce sighs, as he looks up from and removes his glasses. I guess he thinks somethings fishy around here as well. "A warm light for all mankind, Loki's jab at Fury about the cube."
He's talking about the interrogation yesterday. I start listening intently, "I heard it."
He continues, "I think it was meant for you," he points towards Tony, as Tony offers him a blueberry. "Even if Barton didn't post that all over the news." Bruce accepts the blueberry, I think he meant by, "Stark Tower? That big, ugly--" Then Tony gives me a look to 'shut up and don't talk about my baby like that'. It slipped my mind that the owner of that building is in the same room as I am, "building in New York?"
Dr. Banner then continues explaining as he fumbles with his watch and glasses, "its powered by Stark Reactors, self-sustaining energy source. That building will run itself for what, a year?"
"It's just the prototype. I'm kind of the only name in clean energy right now," I mentally roll my eyes at his comment. But I continued listening.
"So why didn't S.H.I.E.L.D didn't bring him in on the Tesseract project?" Point. "I mean, what are they doing in the energy business in the first place?" Bruce refers to Tony, as he is a S.H.I.E.L.D weapons consultant, right?
I can tell I light bulb lit in Tony's head, as he starts heading over to one of the digital monitors in the laboratory. "I should probably look into that once my decryption programmer finishes breaking into all of S.H.I.E.L.D's secure files. That is, they wouldn't found out if Sparky would've assisted me on that, but she surprisingly refuses. Wonder why really..." He brings out another small, holographic plate.
My face lit up to the mention of Amelia, who I assume is Sparky. So that's why Tony knocked on her room, have dirty assumptions, but overall he needed help. For the first time in forever, surprisingly... But thankfully she didn't assist him. "I'm sorry, did you say--"
"J.A.R.V.I.S has been running it since I hit the bridge. In a few more hours, we'll know every dirty secret S.H.I.E.L.D has ever tried to hide." Then he hold out the blueberry bag, offering me one, "Blueberry?"
I ignore the offer, "what do you mean by Amelia assisting?"
Tony scoffs, "I needed Amelia so she could rid the trails that my decryption programmer has created while breaking into those secure files. She didn't want to do it, but she's a master hacktivist, Captain. She told me that 'she doesn't want to get in anymore trouble, she's already made a rookie mistake.' So, screw her for a while 'cause I'll just stop helping Brucie over here and have to rid the trails by myself." I stared down at the floor, not believing his assumptions about her.
"Tony, her mother was reported dead yesterday." I counter, I mean, she doesn't really break the rules. She doesn't do that. Tony smirks, "she told me about it, don't worry. But, I know she must have done something exactly like what I'm doing right now, breaking into a sensitive database and practically hacking the penetration of the system. Sounds fishy, but that's just what hacktivists do; they cannot hold their curiosity so they just pick the lock or kick the door down. She's one of them, Spandex, face it, she breaks the rules. Like me!" He pops another blueberry in his mouth. "Amelia is probably doing it right now, which reminds me, have you checked her room?"
I glance down towards Bruce, who no longer is occupied with the scepter. He listens to Tony's assumptions about what Amelia has been secretly doing, while I calculate them in my head. "Yet you're confused about why they didn't want you around?" No, she's too smart to not, hack S.H.I.E.L.D.
"An intelligence organization that fears intelligence? Historically, not possible."
"I think Loki's trying to wind us up. This is a man who means to start a war, and if we don't stay focused, he'll succeed. We have orders, we should follow them." Right now, I have no idea if I should report this to Fury, but everything right now sounds, peculiar.
"Following is not really my style. I bet the same for Amy as well." I glare at him.
I smile, with some anger built up inside of me, "and you're all about style, aren't you? And don't bring her into this." Tony looked like he was hit in the nerve. Payback.
"Oh she already has brought herself into this." I straighten my back as he swallows another blueberry, "of the people in this room, which one is A; wearing a spangly outfit, and B; not of use?"
Very well. Then Bruce cuts himself in, taking Tony's side. "Steve, tell me none of this smells a little funky to you? Not Amelia, but those secure files." He was surprisingly calm.
I take in the possibility, but kept in mind to stay obedient. "Just find the cube."
Stating an order, I exit the laboratory as those possibilities fill up my head. Is Amelia really with Tony, breaking the rules? Where is she anyway? Why didn't they assign Stark with the energy business? What is he hiding? What is S.H.I.E.L.D hiding?
~Natasha's POV~
"Agent Natalia Romanova, Level 7," the scanner announced as I give the it my palm and retinal scan, letting me enter the large, metal room. I swear, Fury should changed my name to Natasha Romanoff after all of this. There were guards on either side of the doorway, therefore really heavily guarded, even though there is a scanner so that not allowed personal could enter this specific room. Thankfully, they recognized me so I just went along. Anyways, I enter the room, its a circular room, with metal railings and a control panel next to a cell.
Loki's cell. Originally Bruce's when he's the other guy.
He kept wandering his surroundings, scanning the whole area. But he failed, because he sort of didn't see me coming sneaking up behind him. Standing close to the control panel where I could easily open a hatch, plummet the cell down a thirty thousand steel trap, Loki stops in his tracks, finally sensing my presence in the room. "There's not many people that can sneak up on me," he turns around, facing me.
"But you figured I'd come."
I stay in my poised position, as he smirks menacingly. "After. After whatever tortures Fury to concoct, you would appear as a balm. And I would cooperate." He throws another of those grins on his face as he walks towards me inside his cell.
Furrowing my eyebrows, I demanded, "I wanna know what you've done to Agent Barton."
"I'd say I've expanded his mind." I tilt my head to the sides and give him a look as I approach his cell. "And once you've won, once you're king of the mountain," I cross my arms as I stand merely in front of him, a gap of thick glass separating us. "What happens to his mind?"
He gave a look, "is this love, Agent Romanoff?" Peesh. "Love is for children, I owe him a debt," I said as I kept my arms crossed.
I can tell he nodded really faintly, but he headed to the part of his cell and sat down. "Tell me."
Okay, plan; make myself turn into softie then he'll threaten something and I'll 'break'. Then he'll just reveal his hidden and silent plan because of that and after that, go tell Fury. Easy peasy. Natasha Romanoff, master assassin and skillful interrogator.
"Before I worked for S.H.I.E.L.D, I uh..." I pulled out a chair and sat down, "well, I made a name for myself. I have a very specific skill set. I didn't care who I used it for, or on." Loki listens intently, but I continue, "I got in S.H.I.E.L.D's radar in a bad way." I glance downwards, "Agent Barton was sent to kill me, " I face up again and into Loki's gaze, "he made a different call."
Loki turns away, probably pondering his next set of words, he asks, "and what will you do if I vow to spare him?" Obvious answer.
"Not let you out." Then he laughs grimly, amused with our conversation, I mean interrogation. "Ah, no, but I like this. Your world in the balance, and you bargain for one man?"
"Regimes fall everyday," I cock an eyebrow, "I tend not to weep over that." I straighten my poise, "I'm Russian... Or was."
He opens his mouth for a brief moment, glancing downwards quickly. Then he asks, "what is it you want?" (A/N: Okay, Natasha is like describing every movement, slight or obvious, because she interrogating. Like profiling.)
"It's really not that complicated. I've got red in my ledger, I'd like to wipe it out," I state as I leave my chair, cautiously approaching the cell once again.
"Can you?" Then there it was, I sense a hint of blue in his eyes, until it fades away. What... "Can you wipe out that much red? Drakov's daughter?" Oh no... wait, he's just questioning you to make you weak. 'Fall' for it! "São Paulo? The hospital fire?" Keep it coming, even though I hate talking about this besides with... oh. I let shock fill up my eyes, hinting Loki that you're getting there. "Barton told me everything," he raises himself up from his cell seat, "your ledger is dripping, its gushing red, and you think saving a man no more virtuous than yourself will change anything?" Loki starts approaching me, with anger leaking and words lined with poison. "This is the basest sentimentality. This is a child at prayer... PATHETIC!
You lie and kill in the service of liars and killers," don't you do too, bud? "You pretend to be separate, to have your own code, something that makes up for the horrors. But they are apart of you, and they will never go away!" He slams his fist against the glass wall, making me flinch for a second there, as well as uncrossing my arms in 'fright'. "I won't touch Barton, not until I make him kill you! Slowly. Intimately. In every way he knows you fear!" I listen dreadfully to every word he says, my mouth gaping open due to his words. "And he'll wake just long enough to see his good work, and when he screams, I'll split his skull!" I immediately turn and walk away from his gory words and in disgust, no longer face him in the eye. "This is my bargain, you mewling quim!"
"You're a monster," I mutter quietly, in distraught. Okay, time to spit out your plan...
Loki laughs menacingly in response, adding, "no, you brought the monster." Ah-ha! Banner!
Upon hearing finally the words that describe his plan, I immediately turn back around; poised and calm. "So, Banner... That's your play." His staggered face is priceless, ha. "What?" Got you!
I immediately reach for my earpiece, informing Nick on the other side of the comm line. "Loki means to unleash the Hulk. Keep Banner in the lab, I'm on my way. Send Thor as well." Walking away from the cell and towards the exit, I face Loki one last time, "Thank you for your cooperation."
