10; BRIEF UNDERCOVER
"Any luck with tracing?" I asked Bruce about the Tesseract, who just shook his head. I entered the lab with my laptop, and some coffee for Bruce and I, who is obviously stressed with, all of this. It's the next day since I became an agent, and it's been days that Loki has been harder to track. And Agent Barton, Dr. Selvig, and those other agents.
"It feels like every ounce of the gama radiation from the damn thing is getting farther away from us," Bruce replied as he kept looking through a microscope, which is weird because there aren't any microorganisms that's involved with gama, is there? Or the Tesseract? "So, not really."
I frowned, but I hoped to enlighten the mood with coffee, "here, coffee? I hope you like sugar and cream," he looked away from the microscope, and shrugged, accepting the coffee.
Laughing, "nah, I hate black coffee." He started taking sips as I opened my laptop to assist with searching for face traces of Loki. Taking some sips as well. This would be my first "voluntary" assignment, as what Nick described to me, the first assignment I will do since me becoming an agent incident.
"Face tracing again? I thought you would've given up on that one." I looked up, taking more sips of the coffee. The face tracing surprisingly took lots of hacking into numerous satellite surveillance, around the world, but I simply won't give up that easily.
"Well, we need to find him, or them." He looked away, into his microscope. As I continued more face tracing, "What does a microscope have to do with, all of this?"
He started chuckling, "do you know that the Tesseract could be involved with extraterrestrial creatures?"
My eyes widened, almost spitting out the coffee. Hold up, wait a minute, it makes sense. The Tesseract is a portal that could transport you to the other end of space, of course! "Lemme guess, Loki is using the Tesseract to start this E.T. war, so I guess, yeah."
Bruce looked up, laughing. "What?" I ask, and I obviously have no idea why he's laughing. I continued sipping the coffee. Until-
"Do you think that Agent Romanoff and I don't notice that you and the Captain are falling for each other towards the ends of the earth?" Stop, wait a minute! I mean, there's a hella no way that Steve would, ever do that. My eyes even widened as I almost spewed coffee, and Bruce kept laughing. "And yes, the guess about Loki's plans sound legitimately right."
I look up, smiling "really?"
The out of the blue, the lab doors flew open revealing Steve, and from his looks, both heavenly and, outrageous, he looks mad. "Amel- I mean Agent Vale and Dr. Banner, having any luck?" From the corner of my eye, I spot Bruce who just shook his head, and I did the same. Bruce then gave me a look that says "see? He almost called you 'Amelia'" look while I gave him a look that says "really? Not now". I know for three days, I can identify the looks he's giving me immediately. Guessing same for him as well. "And uh, glasses? May I ask, how do you have glasses?" Oh yeah, he has never seen me in my glasses before, and oh my gosh, these glasses are just ugly! Seriously?!
"Oh, ha ha, I've worn them silly, I just wore contacts the last few days," Did I just called him silly?! WTF? I 'ahemed' him, "well, these are kinda the ugly ones-"
"Actually, you look beautiful, in them, uh I mean, they're fine, glasses." Steve complimented me, stuttering surprisingly, making me so freaking red and I couldn't stop grinning like the biggest idiot on the planet. I bit my lip, "I mean, they do look sharper and smarter on you, well not that you aren't smart, wait, you are, just more." Okay, cute factor is way higher than a hundred percent, I couldn't stop smiling, while he smiled back awkwardly. "What are contacts?"
"Well, enough flirting-"
"Not necessary!" I exclaimed between my gritted teeth. Seriously, Bruce?! What is this, high school?! I shot him death glare, slightly gaping my mouth open, because I am probably the reddest tomato out there right now! While Steve kept his head down, wait, is he embarrassed? No, I don't think so.
"Anyways, sorry Steve, nothing yet," I replied, while he looked down and sighed greatly. "Is there something bothering you today?" I smiled at him, showing concern. While again from the corner of my eye, Bruce was smiling, like seriously? I'm just asking! Oh wait, I just realized I called him 'Steve'. Like, what's wrong with that? Something wrong with the brief loss of the sense of professionalism?
"No, nothing really," he looked at me, somehow, his face looks like he's been defeated, or a look that a soldier does when he didn't get a chance to battle in the field during war. Quite ironic because he used to be one.
"Come on, there's nothing wrong with telling me," I looked up from my laptop, with him beaming his beautiful smile.
"It's just that, I feel useless," he replied reluctantly, scratching the back of his neck. Yeah, I guess our friendship grew, ever since that incident, we would be 'workout buddies' to me because we would walk to the arena together and spar or fight, the cyborgs really. It's honestly something that I look forward to every morning nowadays. And again, quite ironic because of my trust issues. Ha.
"Look Steve, you're not useless," okay, I am certainly not good with these types of things, but I hope I can help, "it's just not yet your time to, but I know everyone will get a chance." I smiled awkwardly, while Bruce laughed.
"Sheesh, Amelia, you're not really good at these types of things, are you?" He remarked jokingly, but that definitely was not necessary!
"Wow, I did not know that!" I said sarcastically, then I turned over to Steve, "sorry, yeah he's kinda right." But surprisingly, he just laughed.
"Nah, its fine, really," Steve said as he started walking towards the station where I am currently face tracing, "I guess I'll just have to wait." I smiled, again, he smiled back.
As I turned to face the computer without any luck, Bruce asked, "Amelia, what place are you doing with the satellite facial recognition now? I hope it's about time to find this, puny god." I laughed, ha ha, puny god.
"Well," I started explaining as my fingers flew across the keyboard, and Steve giving bewildered looks, "first, face tracing may be an easier term, and second, I'm currently searching surveillance in Germany, every camera, everything, even surveillance. I am currently checking Hamburg, well no luck there, then Berlin, argh, no luck again, and ah-hah!! Bruce! Steve! Come over here!" As soon as I exclaimed on what I found, Bruce and Steve hurriedly scurried to my station. "Stuttgart, Germany, 69 percent match of a face similar to Loki's. And with weight cross-matched thanks to the essential software provided by SHIELD, it finally gives me a 79 percent, match."
"Why not a hundred percent?" Steve asked, finally his spirits are lifted up. That's good.
"Well, more than fifty, it's still good. Anyways, his face appeared on this surveillance about three hours ago." I reported, feeling excited because I found him.
"Great job, Amelia! We need to report to Fury and Romanoff and the others-"
"No need for that, doctor. Excellent job, Amelia," Bruce was interrupted as I turned to look at Nick, who just entered the lab with Natasha, "now we need a plan, Captain?" Nick gestures for Steve, "care to assist me for this?"
Steve smiled, patting my shoulder, my heart flutters a little bit. Nick continues, "Amelia, where is he planning to go?" Alright, my time to shine.
"Nick, Loki was just seen in a ten point fifty-three radius surrounding this point about one and a half hours ago. Later, at western time, tonight there," I pointed to a satellite image of a building on the screen, "there is this gala at a museum around the ten point fifty-three radius. Why probably this museum? Well, it holds this metal compound called iridium and its heavily guarded, high security-"
"Wait," Bruce interrupted me as I was explaining, "Iridium is one of the rarest metal compounds that is found in meteorites and it forms anti protons-"
"But doctor, how can it affect the Tesseract?" Natasha interrupted him, while I kept finding the museum's location. Never thought Bruce would know some astrophysics, besides gama radiation and besides the fact that he's a doctor.
"Agent Romanoff, Captain, Amelia, and Director, it can help trigger the Tesseract to form a portal, enormously.". We gave each other blank stares, but what does he mean by 'enormously' exactly?
"Dr. Banner, what do you mean by 'enormously'?" Steve asks, finally helping to clear things up. Curiosity and some fear tremble in his voice.
Bruce deeply sighed, "Captain, everyone, iridium is very rare and what I mean by 'enormously' is that it will increase the size of the portal."
I looked up, with my brows furrowed, but I added and murmured, "so Loki could transport his alien army to Earth." Everyone showed their 'shocking' and 'determined' looks while Nick just gave out a blank stare. Typical.
"War," Natasha added.
"So, we need a plan to stop Loki once and for all. Amelia, location?" Nick finally breaking the silence.
"Nick, its 28 Konigstrasse, where the museum is located. The gala starts at 7:00 in the evening, and right now it's-"
"4:35, okay," Steve interrupted me, but oh well. He is the Captain after all. Where did he check the time though?
"Amelia, brief undercover?" Nick suggested, making me look up from my laptop, as I give him a perplexed look.
"Yeah?"
"What do you mean?" Steve asks, with concern and curiosity in his tone.
"Amelia, get dressed for this gala, and teleport with your ring to find Loki. Keep us in touch, that's why an earpiece will accompany you tonight," Nick then pointed to Steve and Natasha, "Captain, suit up while Romanoff will pilot a small jet transporting you and probably a captured Loki-"
"Whoa, whoa," Steve interrupted, "why can't Agent Romanoff just do the undercover?" Okay, dude, I can do this. Its like I have to dress for prom and go to this gala to find him and lure him to you guys while you guys get prepared to fight Loki. Not much harm at all.
"Because I can't pilot a jet that will transport a captured Loki and you guys." I answered for Nick, while Steve looks, well mad at the fact of me doing my undercover. Again, I continued researching more about the gala tonight, therefore I am just scanning my laptop. With my fingers flying across the keyboard, as well as more research with iridium.
"And Captain, Amelia can do this, so stop worrying about her," Natasha joked, making my eyes widened and getting myself redder and redder 'till the very last minute. Steve just looked away, crossing his arms. Huh?
"Amelia, if your plan fails and Loki shows up unexpectedly, you will help evacuate the other people that are attending the gala," Nick then starts explaining, "Captain and Romanoff, if this fails, Captain, duel with Loki while Romanoff, you must keep the jet in midair to have a clear shot of at least wounding him, or at least make him surrender."
"Amelia, if Loki exits, with a big crowd fleeing, then I'll be there to fight. Natasha will assist me on surrendering, but she'll stay stationed at the jet," Steve finally summarizes, looking at me, smiling. Oh my Lord, my first undercover mission.
I stood up from my chair, "yes Captain."
"How about me?" Bruce asks, I guess he is wishing to not assist in this, short mission. Or else he'll end up smashing, you know, things.
"Doctor, you remain here, and continue tracing the gama rays." Steve answers for Nick, who just nodded his head. Bruce just shrugged it off, heading towards one of his 'toys', immediately searching for any gama rays once more. "Director, how about Stark?" He asks, which makes me to completely forget about Tony Stark.
Nick replies easily, "I'll take care of Stark, while you Captain shall operate the mission. Amelia, depart immediately before the gala begins, while Natasha, the jet will be prepared for you two to arrive at the gala at around 19:30. Amelia, understand you're luring Loki, right?"
"Yeah, Nick, not seducing. There's a difference." I answered quickly.
"It better be," Steve added in a low tone, who kept his arms crossed. From the corner of my eye, I spot Bruce smirking, he's smirking a smirk that screams 'ha ha, OTP!' which is like, well, oh dear. Steve saw him do that, which made him look away, again. Great job, Bruce, whatever his middle name is, Banner! And I just realized that all this time I keep rambling with my nifty conscience...
Then there was this long pause. "And speaking of suits and dresses," Natasha breaks off the awkard atmosphere, and as well because, like, where could I even get a dress? "Amelia, I have found a dress from around the helicarrier, appropriate for this gala. You better get ready." Yup, Natasha is probably like Abbey during senior prom. She smiled, gesturing me to leave the laboratory. "Oh and Captain, let Coulson lead you to your new and improved suit, he would freak," as soon as she added that, it made me giggle.
Steve, in the other hand, just sighed and smiled, "okay, let's get ready."
Anyways, Natasha was right, she has found a beautiful dress, which is red and has silver detailing, a sweetheart neckline with a sling over my left shoulder, and small ruffles in the front. Its a really beautiful dress, so I thanked her, and surprisingly, she gave me a warm hug. She volunteered to fix my hair into this 'ten-minute updo' that she sometimes uses during her undercover cases.
I did my own makeup, and honestly, I hope all of this will impress Steve. I can't stop thinking about him in his suit, especially the last time I witnessed him fighting was Project 45, and again, that other story that can be told another time. Another thing that excites me is that I'll probably be able to meet Tony Stark, in his suit, ready to fight with, well us. His arrival will hopefully be expected during the gala.
I wore some nude heels, as I wore these dangling silver earrings, which I would say, like damn, expensive. Clinging on to my purse which holds my badge, lip balm, my phone, and the box that carries my ring, I exit my room. As soon as I exited, outside my door is an agent, who is waiting patiently and is currently holding a box that holds my earpiece I assume. "Agent Vale, I am Agent Wedding , here to assist you on applying the earpiece and explain the instructions directed to you by Director Fury," Agent Wedding introduced herself, also added a complimentary smile.
"Thanks, Agent Wedding, what are the instructions?" I asked her, while she is assembling the earpiece from the box.
"First, this earpiece will be inserted inside your ear, but not close to the eardrum," Agent Wedding started explaining and assuring me, while she is in the process of assembling the earpiece. "Okay, see this?" she pointed to a long, curved, black stick attached to the earpiece, "as soon as you wear this earpiece, this part turns invincible and allows you to talk without anyone detecting you are wearing an earpiece."
"Alright, I got it. What else?" I ask, as my excitement grew. Wait, an invincible microphone? Dang with the technology!
"The ring, always wear it." She adds, but stopped me before I was about to say something, "You will teleport to the museum, and Captain Rogers will be behind the line of this earpiece the whole time."
Hold up, whoa, whoa, how can he use the earpiece? I replied by giving her a perplexed look, making her giggle, "don't worry, he's learning very quickly and try not to murmur that much," oh, ha ha.
Laughing, "Thanks again."
"Maggie," she took out her hand, while I shook it.
"Amelia," I smile.
Maggie Wedding is a very slim girl, with wavy-curly hair in a ponytail, blue-eyed, brunette, and is currently wearing the tight S.H.I.E.L.D uniform that most of the agents here wear. Nick told me I'll get my uniform, well, I don't know when.
"I've heard, you are incredibly lucky to participate in such a mission. Not to add superheroes to the mix." She commented, and I am starting to like her. Maggie smiles.
"Yeah, I know right. How about you? Director Fury told me that you should at least have level 7 clearance to participate here. Agent Wedding?" I asked her, as we are walking down the hall to the meeting room where I'll meet the others.
"Oh yes, well I specialize in combat, one of the first in class and yes, I am Level 7," huh. Impressive, "I'm jealous because you look beautiful in that dress by the way," Maggie compliments.
"Aw, thank you," but I have to stop the conversation because we finally arrived to the meeting room, "I'm here."
She smiles, "Oh, oh well. Anyways, Captain Rogers will be with you the whole time while Agent Romanoff will pilot the jet. Remember, lure him, but not seduce him. And, if the plan fails, just follow the crowd and help evacuate them. Okay?" Did Nick tell her to tell me about the seducing part? I'm not like that! I think that's Natasha's thing though, ha ha.
"Okay," I turned to face the pair of metal doors, but smiled back at her, "Well thank you, again, and I'll see you around, Agent Wedding."
"Alright Agent Vale, good luck and you too." She smiles, turning away, walking towards the end of the hallway. From her behavior, she is honest that she is an impressive fighter, an assertive and loyal agent, and I would say, a nice person to just talk to besides the Avengers.
Facing the pair of metal doors, I took a deep breath, inhale, exhale.
~Steve's POV~
As I stared down to the table located on the center of the room, I adjusted the earpiece. Impressed with the technology, but careful of what to say to Amelia, well considering that she is on the other end of the, um line? Currently, I am in my suit, without the helmet for a moment, and my shield stood beside me, leaning against my right leg.
Anyways, my hands rested on the table, still surprised I am the first one to arrive in the meeting room, ready to discuss the plan all over again. I wonder what Amelia will look like from the dress, and everything? She'll still look beautiful though. Honestly, I won't approve of her undercover, I mean what if Loki seduced her? What if she- she became badly wounded? All these types of questions start roaming my head, but I secretly will just protect her then. She shouldn't notice, my feelings towards her aren't things that I still can distinguish.
Then out of the blue, the metal doors flew open, interrupting my pondering and worrying. Hearing the clicking of heeled shoes coming nearer, I turned around, but it was too late, all because my breath was taken away. "Whoa, wow." I murmured to myself, but I wasn't wary about my earpiece, I just don't care. Right before me stood the beautiful Amelia Vale, looking regal and majestic. Technically everything to describe her as, beautiful. Rogers, stop drooling!
"You-you look, beautiful." I said to her, mesmerized. She couldn't stop smiling, while I probably couldn't stop grinning and drooling like an idiot. "Really beautiful, I mean like really beautiful," and because of this, I didn't realize the words that just came out of my mouth. Stupidity.
Amelia just giggled adorably, "Thank you, Steve." I started walking towards her, leaving my shield. Surprisingly, she started walking towards me, too, "While, you look," she bit her lower lip while scanning my uniform, "handsome." She then quickened the rest of her words, "I mean, I like the uniform." I looked down at her, she look up smiling. Amelia just clung to her purse, grinning.
A long pause occurs, we just stared into each other's eyes. Her hazel eyes unto mine, just wishing this moment should last much longer. "Are you ready?" I asked her, making sure that she's got this, but I will still be there to protect her, just in case.
"Yeah, I am ready." she replies with assurance, confidence, and determination. Like she vowed to not let a war start in someone's hands. I like that.
"Aright, Amelia, you can teleport now. Its 6:57 by the way." Natasha appeared or entered from the doors, reminding Amelia to get going. And not to forget of ruining the moment, I guess. Our trance of our eyes was destroyed as Amelia turned her head towards Natasha, who is wearing her black, leathery uniform.
Natasha's eyes widened, because I knew she couldn't behold the sight. Amelia is beautiful tonight, but only for a little while, sadly. "Wow, Amy, you are beautiful tonight," Natasha complimented her as she walks towards us. I decided to reach for my shield and helmet, but she continued complimenting, "you will catch Loki's eyes and lead him straight for us to deal with him. Are you ready?" Wait, Amy?
"Yeah, how's the jet?" She asks, also concerned about our roles.
"Its none of your concern as your concern is to find Loki. You need to get going," Natasha reminded, making Amelia nod her head.
She then replied, "Aright. See ya guys, wish me luck." Amelia turned to look at me, smiling. With doing final adjustments with her earpiece, she walked a few steps towards me, did a tiny salute, and in the end, vanished into thin air. She's gone for a moment.
"How about you? Is the earpiece working out for you?" Natasha turns to me as soon as Amelia teleported. I removed it, so Amelia won't hear from me for just a moment.
"Yeah," I replied, while fixing the shield and my helmet.
"Captain," Natasha started stating, "stop worrying about her, she'll be fine."
I looked up at her, "Agent, its just, I mean what if-"
"See? Stop, seriously. She's got this, I may have only known her for a few days, but she will do her duty properly, so she'll be safe." She assured me, but its sort of not working.
"Nat, I just don't want her to be harmed, both physically or mentally. She's coping-"
"And so are you."
"Look, towards her, I feel the need to look after her, be her friend. And I am certainly not ashamed to accept the duty of gaining the role of being her friend. Someone to be watching her back, especially during this mission." I finally admitted, but from her look, she knew some of it is a lie. Natasha just smirked.
"Cap, you love her. You're obviously smitten." She's right. NO! Wait... Its been only four days! I can't be-- "You made her feel welcome, you both gained each other's trust, she trusts you. Plus, she probably loves you back."
"Probably? I doubt it, Agent Romanoff. We've only met..." Ha, thanks a lot.
"Captain Rogers, she does. Not probably, and these past three days? Yeah, me and Banner can tell. We're not dumb. Besides, that last statement about 'being her friend' really doesn't cut it."
"Well, so? I know that, its just-"
"Look, the jet is ready, and can we discuss this there? Just don't forget your earpiece, shield, and all of that stuff." Almost forgetting about that, I reached for it and turned to her, giving her my stern look.
"Just promise me, do not tell her any of this, alright?"
She sighs, but ultimately smirks excitedly, "Alright, I promise."
