iv. Fights and Compliments

EPISODE ONE-
FIGHTS AND COMPLIMENTS

1996

Lottie had driven Josie to the party. That was who josie had originally been hanging out with. Well, until Jackie death Josie away, because Bobby Farleigh wanted to try and ask Josie out again. She was sick of it. She was sick of Bobby, who was an asshole, trying to ask her out again. She was sick of Jackie always trying to get into her love life.

So, she was trying to get away as Jackie walked after her. "You're never gonna get a boyfriend like this, Josie." There it was. It was always that comment. She hated always hearing that. She stopped, turning to Jackie taking a breath before she spoke. "That's the thing Jackie, I don't want a boyfriend. Why can't you understand that? Why do you always have to be getting into my love life?" She wanted to scream. She wanted for Jackie to just realize why Josie didn't want a boyfriend.

For Jackie to understand. For Jackie to not try and control her life for once. "Why can't you understand that I can't ever love Bobby Farleigh because-" she paused. She was saying to much. No, she needed to stop. Praying, hoping Jackie wouldn't question on what she meant.

But, of course she did. "Because what? Josie, what do you mean?" She couldn't do this. Josie couldn't tell Jackie. Especially not in the middle of party. Where so many could hear. She couldn't tell Jackie because she didn't know how.

"Just- forgot it Jackie." She spat out, quickly turning and continuing to walk off. "Josie!" Jackie yelled after her, Jackie didn't walk after her; Josie didn't stop walking.

Only stopping when she got to the keg, grabbing a cup. She needed a drink. "What is it this time?" The sound of Van's voice filled the air. "Oh you know, just my dear old sister trying to get me to go out with Bobby fucking Farleigh again." She looked up at Van after filling the red cup, "But, what's new?" A bitter smile placed on Josette's face as she chuckled a little.

Van frowned at that. "Still haven't told her?" She questioned even though she knew the answer. "No. You and Tai are still the only one's who know and I'm-" She paused herself. Looking around, then grabbing Van's arm and pulling her off so they weren't by so many people.

"I'm just not ready for anyone else to know. It's the exact reason why I'm the only for who knows about you and Tai." She whispered the last part even though no one was around them.

Josie was the only one who knew about Tai and Van. But they didn't tell her- She only found out because she walked in on them once.. Because she forgot something in the locker room. She would never do that again.

"It's okay that you aren't ready for anyone else to know yet, Jo." Van understand Josie. And she understood why Josie was so scared at first in 8th grade. Because, when Van figured herself out she was scared too. She was going to say something else-

"Shit. Shauna's wasted and she's walking towards Tai- we should-" Josie didn't even get to finish her sentence before Van grabbed the red solo cup and drowned the burning liquor."Hey!" Van was already walking off towards Shauna and Tai, Jo let a sigh out and followed.

"Just admit you did it on purpose!" Was the first thing they heard, "You're wasted."

"And you're a fucking sociopath." Shauna told her. "Woah!" Van quickly went up, putting herself between the two. "Calm down." She tried to tell her but, when Shauna was drunk- she didn't think. She hadn't even realized Nat, Laura Lee, Lucia and Lottie had walked over. Lottie being the one who slightly pulled back Josie. "No! Listen, you guys, we don't have to worry about the Allie problem anymore because Taissa fixed it for us."

"Shauna-" Josie started to speak up but then Laura Lee's confused voice spoke up."What? What she's talking about?" She looked around at everyone. Nat being the first to speak the truth. "She's talking about Taissa's little plan."

"Oh, please. Since when do you give a shit anyway? Don't you have a bong to hit or a dick to suck?" Tai asked looking towards Nat. And that just pissed Josette off. "Taissa!" Lucia looked to her with an annoyed face, "Don't talk to her that way!" Shauna voiced just after Lucia.

"Oh, fuck off, Shauna." Natalie quickly snapped at Shauna. "I don't need you to defend me. Last time I checked, you were fine with the whole 'freeze her out' strategy." It was too much yelling. Josie hasn't had much to drink and- it was still to loud. She needed everyone to stop.

"Okay, seriously." Laura Lee started again, still confused. Josie felt bad for the girl. "What are you talking about?" It was like that's what sent everyone off. "Shut the fuck up, Laura Lee!" Tai, Shauna, Lucia and Nat yelled at the girl.

"No, no, no stop it." Tai then turning her attention back to Shauna. "Somebody needs to take her wasted ass home." Josie agreed with Taissa. Shauna needed to go home. She was drunk and wasn't thinking right.

"Say that again, bitch." Shauna dared her as she stepped slightly closer. "Say that again!" This time it was Josie who got in between them. Josie grabbed onto Shauna, trying to push her back. "I will say it again!" Tai shouted and all the yelling overlapped.

Josie finally was able to get Shauna backed up a little. "You're drunk. Go home, Shauna. Come on, I'll get Lottie to drive you home." Shauna wasn't listening. She kept trying to push forward. "Shauna you really should go home."

And it was like that set a match off in Shauna. "Don't fucking tell me what to do!" Because the next thing she knew she felt shauna's hand slap her face. "Oh, fuck you Shauna!" This time, Josette shoved Shauna back. And then she heard Lucia, and Lottie was once again pulling Josie back."What the fuck, Shauna? She didn't do shit to you!"

Then she saw Shauna and Lucia yelling back and forth with each other. Shauna still yelling at Tai a bit. Tai yelling back at her as Van tried to pull her away. "Go home, Shauna!" Josie yelled, trying to get out of Lottie's grasp.

"That's it! Enough!" The sound of Jackie yelling made everyone stop their yelling. "Yellowjackets, with me. Now!" She yelled before walking off. Everyone but Lucia following.

"Lucia Park! Get over here!" Jackie yelled back at the dark haired girl.

"I don't know what the fuck that was, but I do know that it's over. We're about to go to nationals. And based on what I'm looking at right now, we might as well not even bother getting on that plane." Jackie took a deep breath.

"All right. Everybody line up." She told them all but they didn't listen."No, I'm fucking serious. Line up! Come on!" They all did at that. Quickly. "Here's what we're gonna do. I want each of you to go down this line and say one nice, true thing about every other girl on this team." Did Jackie really think that would solve anything? Josie didn't think it would.

"What is this, fucking Girl Scout camp?" Tai commented on it making Van snorted and Josie let out a light chuckle. Causing Lucia to lightly hit her on the side. "Who wants to go first?" Jackie asked, ignoring Tai's words. "I'll go, Jackie." Laura Lee smiled brightly as she raised her hand like she always did.

Jackie nodded and Laura stepped forward, standing in front of Tai. "Taissa, you are beautiful in the eyes of our Lord." She told her, "Mm." was all Tai gave as she smiled a little. Then Laura Lee moved to Van. Soon making everyone realize she was just going to say the same thing to everyone, "Van, you are beautiful-" making Lottie cut her off. "Oh, my god!"

Natalie turned her head as she let out a laugh. "Okay! Laura Lee, fall back." Jackie told her, making the girl go back into the line. "Fuck, okay. I'll go first." she told them all and went to Tai.

"Taissa Turner, you have more fight in you than anyone I've ever known. I'm inspired by your determination." Jackie smiled at her before moving to Van.

"Vanessa Palmer." She started and let out a small chuckle,"Your smile makes me feel happy every time I see it." That one was true, Van's smile could make anyone feel happy and safe.

"Laura Lee, I truly admire your faith." Laura Lee smiled at that and then Jackie went to josette. "Josette, you're one of the smartest people I know. You're always there when someone needs help and- I'm glad you're my sister. I wouldn't trade you and I'm sorry I keep trying to get you too date Bobby Farleigh. I'll leave you and your love life alone."

Josette felt relieved at that. "Thank you." she felt at peace knowing Jackie would stay out of it.

Then Jackie was in front of Lucia. "Lucia Park, I truly love how you are always defending your love ones. You may act like a bitch to most, but once they get to know you, you're so kind and caring." Lucia smiled at that. Jackie smiling back. Josie noticed that the smile looked full of love... a smile she never saw Jackie using with Jeff.

"Nat, I love that you don't care what anybody thinks. And you're so completely yourself." Then Van spoke up. "She's also deadly at beer pong." Everyone chuckled at it. That was true. Everytime Josie played beer pong with nat- she lost. "So, go on. Tell her! Come on, guys."

At that everyone paired up with someone. Josie ended up with Lucia, which she didn't mind. "Lucia, you aren't afraid to speak your mind when someone fucks up. You throw the meanest punches. You're my best friend. I'm grateful for that. You're always there to defend me. Even if I don't need it."

Lucia chuckled at the last part. They both knew it was bullshit. "I admire on how you keep up with my bullshit. You're the first one to ever do that. I'm glad you were the first. And I'm glad you forced me to join soccer."

Josie was glad she got her too join too.

"Also... Do you think your sister would go for me?" Josie paused. Was Lucia high...? "Are you high? Did Nat give you something?" Giggles escaped Lucia as she nodded. "Jesus Christ, Lucia." She shook her head at the girl as Lucia walked away and Shauna was then in front of Josie.

She didn't want to talk to her."Hi, I'm sorry. For slapping you in the face." The taller girl shook her head."You're not sorry." She sent with a smile, letting out a small laugh. Shauna just nodded.

Then Josie smiled at her before walking away and going to Lottie. "What do you have to say on me?" She knew Lottie didn't have to. She didn't need Lottie to say anything. She was mostly joking. "Don't worry I'm only joking you don't need to-"

She was stopped by Lottie grabbing her hand and dragging her off. "Josette Taylor, where do I even start?"

And that's how she spent an hour of hearing Lottie rambling on how much she loved her.
