i. The Beginning

EPISODE ONE-
The Beginning

1996

ALL SHE COULD FEEL was her blood pumping through her veins as she looked around, trying to get open so the ball could be passed to her. Josie wanted to win with everything in her. If they won this game, they would make it to nationals. The cheering was loud as the game went on. The pressure on winning the game was hard, it was from everyone. Well, not that much from her parents. They mostly gave it to jackie though since it was obvious jackie was the favorite.

So Josette thought- if they won nationals, her parents would pay more attention to her. Congratulations her on how hard she's worked for this. Just pay attention to her for once.

Tai had the ball. Shauna was open. "Tai over here! Tai, this side!" It was passed to Shauna, rolling fast towards her and when shauna got the ball. She ran from the people around her and kicked it back to who had it before. "Tai, hey!" Josette yelled, finally getting open. The game was close. It was almost a tie, they couldn't lose. Josette would not let that happen. She didn't want it to happen.

She saw tai kick the ball towards her, it sped over. Kicking grass up as it did. As soon as Josie had the ball she started looking for someone who was open. "Josie!" it was Jackie. Josie started running, trying to get closer to Jackie. Before someone from the other team could take the ball. Of course, she jinxed herself and a member of the other team was running behind her.

As soon as she kicked the ball it bounced off Jackie's head, into the goal. Cheers had happened so fast. They won. They had won.

She couldn't help but let out a chuckle, out of relief and disbelief. She ran over to everyone who was tackling Jackie in a hug, she got there and they turned into a circle.

"BUZZ! BUZZ! BUZZ!" Was chanted, Josie still couldn't believe it. She had never once in her life imagined they would go to nationals. Her mind was flooding with all these thoughts. Would they win nationals.

She was dragged out of her thoughts when someone tackled her into a hug from behind, a familiar beautiful laugh going into her ears. Lottie. She couldn't help the fact her smile only grew wider. Rejoining in on the chant, "BUZZ! BUZZ! BUZZ!"

"We're going to nationals!"

She sat in the back of the car as Shauna drove the three to school. Jackie quickly turned the radio to a different song, letting out a giggle. "Were you listening to that?"

"No. No, it fell into the tape deck and I accidentally pressed play." Shauna told her as Jackie opened her bag, grabbing lip gloss out. After a moment Shauna spoke up.

"I saw Jeff. What happened to no distractions before nationals?" Well, now josette was glad she grabbed cassette tape. Because, she definitely didn't want to hear about this. She quickly put her head phones on, pressing play.

'I want to hold the hand inside you...'

the sound of Fade Into You by Mazzy Star started to fill her ears. Through she had her headphones on, she still saw Jackie roll down the window. Poking her head out the window, starting to yell.

The words were a bit mumbled, but she still heard.

"Try undefeated, bitches! We're going to motherfucking nationals!"

Josie could hear the sound of Shoop by Salt-N-Pepa blasted in the locker room as they got ready for practice. Though Josie wasn't out there when the rest of the girls were, she could still hear- She mostly heard them all singing along to it. She was actually in the bathroom were Jackie was painting a yellowjacket on Allies face.

"Allie. You all right?" Jackie suddenly asked due to the look on the girls face, pulling the paintbrush away. "It's just a pep rally. Honestly, I think the whole point is just to give freshmen something to jerk off to later." Josette couldn't help but roll her eyes."Jackie!" The sound of lotties voice was heard making Josie turn just in time to see her."Coach wants to see you in his office."

Allie quickly turned back to Jackie at that. "I'm not nervous," jackie didn't say anything, she handed the paint brush to van and walked out. Van stood in front of allie and started to paint the face paint again. "I'm the only freshman who got asked, you know." Oh, Josie was sick of hearing this. "I know." Van generally tried being nice. "It's so unfair. My dress was gonna be amazing."

Yeah, Josie was officially done hearing this. "Oh just shut up about the dance. You have next year. Three more years actually! So just, shut up. It's annoying. I'm tired of hearing it. Van's most likely tired of hearing it." She didn't actually mean to say all of that.

But once she started talking she couldn't stop. "You don't even get it Josie. You haven't been asked since you were a freshman. You're a senior now." Before Josie or Allie could say anything else- van interfered,"Okay, You're done." She told Allie making the younger girl walk out of the bathroom.

Once she was out Josie couldn't help but let out a giggle and smile."Jesus Christ." Lottie spoke and they all started laughing- "I just was tired of hearing it." Van high fived Josie who let out another tiny laugh. "Does someone want to tell Kelly Kapowski to maybe worry less about prom and more about not fucking up nationals?"

Lottie made a perfect point with that actually. Allie was most definitely the worst player, and she understand Allie was only a freshman but- still. "Oh, come on."

"If she plays like she did at state.." Lottie started as she fixed her hair while looking in the mirror. "Yeah, don't worry. That's not gonna happen." Tai told them before walking out making Josie confused.

"Well okay then.. Jo, you want me to paint a little yellowjacket on your face?"

The team waited outside, waiting for the cue to go inside the gymnasium. Listening to the principle talk about how the baseball team had lost. And well, Josie could care less. She just wanted to go in there already.

"Now, our next act needs no introduction. So let's all just make some noise for your New Jersey State Girls' Soccer Champions!"

At that the team jogged into the room, the sound of cheering happening as they did. Josie had a smile on her face. Of course she did, she couldn't help it. She was happy about this. The sound of misty, the equipment manager for the team chanting was louder now.
