Don't I Know

Brian put his hands around my waist and I put my arms around his neck, we swayed back and forth a bit. I have to admit, I was enjoying this.

I smiled at Brian and he smiled back.

Wow, we are acting like two middle schoolers at their first dance. Wow.

People came streaming through the doors at the other side of the club, but I wasn't really noticing this, I was noticing Brian's eyes, the way he smiled when he saw me looking at him.

That's what I was looking at.

The song slowly came to an end and Brian led me off the dance floor and towards a small table.

"I'm gettin' a drink" Brian shouted a bit as another song started, "want anything, love?"

I shook my head a bit and Brian moved off towards the bar.

Brian came back to me and sat down swiftly, taking a drink. "How are you, Ruby?" He leaned back, I looked wearily at the drink.

"I'm fine, Brian, thanks"

"This is such a turnout"

I raised an eyebrow, asking 'why?'.

I figured he'd continue anyway...

"You know, you and me, stuff. Mick and Marianne I dunno sweetheart, you're real pretty tonight" he smiled.

I decided that there was some sort of compliment in there, so, I reached over and rubbed his hand.

Two or three beers later, I decided that I was done for the night. It was early morning, probably, and I was tired!

"Brian? I'm going to go now, I'm tired"

His eyes came to mine slowly, they were a bit cloudy. "Can I walk you though, a girl like you...shouldn't be alone.." He shrugged. I nodded.

We walked out the doors without attracting much attention, and I was wondering if Brian would still be the same with some alcohol in him, when I felt an arm go around my shoulders. I smiled a bit.

"I-ah I hope you enjoyed yourself, Ruby, with me" Brian said quietly, I subconsciously leaned my head on his shoulder, hoping that the gesture would solicit the answer he was hoping for.

"I have enjoyed myself, Brian, thank you" Well, at least it's better then watching the 'wonder couple' (Mick & Marianne) meet up everywhere, by "accident".

I felt him nod a bit, and that's when I realized that we were nearing Marianne's house. I lifted my head up.

"I uh, I guess I should go inside, I looked wearily at the lit up room, there was only one, ohh joy.

I wearily pushed open the door and and Brian ambled in after me. He gulped down the last of his drink and set it on the counter, then he shuffled over to the couch and plopped down. Soon thereafter, snoring ensued. I sighed. I guess I was staying here tonight, where Mick and Marianne were doing...something, Brian was passed out on the couch and then there was me.

Even though it was early morning, I looked at the clock..2:30AM, how nice.

I was about to go to the guest room, which was slowly becoming my room, when I heard a loud pounding knock at the door. I froze. It was very early, wasn't even light outside. And there was a knock. At. The. Door.

I turned at the pace of a snail and took tentative steps towards the door. When I got there, I peered through the little hole near the top, and saw a tuft of black hair. I slid back down and leaned against the wall, a confused expression on my face.

My brain tick ticked into motion as I replayed who I knew who had black hair. I stopped on Bill or Keith. Hopping back up, I peered through again, saw a narrow nose and dark eyes.

He knocked again.

Then again, this man behind the door could be a psycho. I shrugged, either way, I had to do something. I slid down and sat at the foot of the door, against the wall.

Then I straightened and, before I could change my mind, flicked the lock sideways and opened the door a crack. I squished up against the wood, "who's there?" I managed to squeak out. "Hey Ruby, uhm I can..explain?" He said as his head turned toward me. Then I opened it fully with a relieved sigh.

For there stood my uncle. And then he told me something, and the words struck me one at a time, in slow motion.

"I need you to come back home."
