prologue!

the day samira shetty died!

IT WAS JUNE 26th and Samira was in her room, turning up the ac.  It was a really hot day but she couldn't wait for her and Greg to celebrate their four month anniversary.  Maybe we'll have our first kiss!, she thought.

Her brother, Liam, walked into her room.  "Hey, Samira."

"You should knock before you come in."

"Anyways, mom wants to know what movie you want to watch later."

"Maybe we could watch 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before'.  It's a good movie."

"You've watched it a hundred times."

"Because Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky are so cute together! I still need to watch the sequels though."

"Fine.  I'll tell her."

Hours later, it was two in the afternoon.  Greg would be there in an hour but Samira thought it was best to get ready early.

She had on a floral dress with pink heels.  Her curly hair was put up into a ponytail, embroidered with pearl hair clips.

Waiting for what seemed like forever, it was finally three o'clock.  Where is he? He should be here by now, she thought.

Her phone rang, showing that Greg was calling.  Taking a deep breath, she answered the phone.  "Hello?"

"Hi, Sam."

"Hey, Greg.  Where are you? Are you stuck in traffic?"

"No."

"Are you sick or something?"

"No.  Look, Sam, there's something I want to tell you."

"What is it, Greg?"

"I... I think we should see different people."

Those words make Samira's brain spiral.  What did he mean by that?  "I don't understand.  Why?"

"I just don't think we're compatible anymore. I think it's better this way.  You're always so busy with school and stuff that I can't even hang out with you anymore."

"And you have football but I never saw it as a problem.  So what changed, Greg?"

"Nothing changed, Sam.  I just need some space, okay?"

"So it's over? Just like that?" Samira asked, her voice breaking a bit.

"I'm sorry, Sam." The line cut off as Samira stood there in shock.  She couldn't believe it.

Greg Jones stood her up.  He didn't pick her up, he didn't bring her flowers, they didn't even go on their date.  He just called and ended their relationship.

What a great anniversary gift.

The girl placed her phone on her nightstand, plopping on her bed.  Her makeup was ruined by her tears but she didn't really care.  Greg didn't deserve all the effort she spent into looking her best.  "Samira, Mom says -"

Liam noticed his sister crying, grabbing some tissues.  "What happened?"

"Greg broke up with me." she stated, a bit muffled from her face being buried in a pillow.  She took the tissues from her brother's hand, wiping her tears.  "That guy is such a jerk.  I hope he gets hit by a bus or something."

"I just don't understand.  What did I do wrong? I always tried to make time for him, I would try and hang out with him as much as I could, I - I don't even know anymore."

"If it makes you feel any better, Mom made Kathi rolls."

"Tell her I'll be there soon."

"Okay.  Samira?"

"Yes, Liam?"

"I'm here for you, okay?"

"Okay."

Liam closed the door, leaving Samira alone with her thoughts.  Changing her pillow case and into some pajamas, she went downstairs.

"Mira, my love.  You're just in time.  The Kathi rolls are nice and hot."

"Thanks, Mom."

"And we aren't going to watch 'All the Boys I Loved Before' because of that stupid boy."

Samira chuckled a bit, causing her mother to smile.  "Don't let him get to you, okay? It's going to get better, I promise."  The two of them hugged before pulling away.  "Hey, pumpkin.  You can sit at the table.  I'll get your food, okay."

"Hey, dad.  Thanks."

The four of them ate in silence, enjoying the savory meal.  Once the dishes were washed and put away, Samira went upstairs to her room.  She decided to post some pictures on Instagram.
