Few and Far Between
Most of their days together were filled with joy. Some were filled with peace. Even fewer of their days were filled with sadness. But this day, rare and hardly ever had, was filled with wrath. It was the one emotion that Aether hid best, the one he never showed. Just as his happy moods reflected the brightness of the sun, so too did his anger. The heat of his glare looked out of place with him.
As for what had upset him, it was best to leave that unknown. Whether or not his reason for feeling the way he felt did not matter to (y/n) in that moment. When Aether was angry, he was reckless and impulsive just as anyone else could be.
"Aether!" He did not listen to her call, still walking forward. "Aether!" She caught up to him and stepped into his path to trap him in a hug. It was her attempt to stop him from going after the one who had sparked this blazing furnace. It was to stop him from doing something that he might later come to regret. "It's okay, Aether. Everything is fine," she said to try talking him out of his thought process.
"(Y/n), please let me go," he said as calmly as he could. She could hear the pain in his voice. The unbridled rage gave his eyes a sharpness that didn't belong in them. "Let me go," he repeated, almost begging.
"Let's just go. It's not worth it."
He placed a hand on her shoulder. "Let me go, (y/n). I'm not going to do anything rash."
"You know you will. I know you will. Don't lie to me." He fell silent, not bothering to refute the claim. "Let it go," she told him.
"I can't let that slide," Aether insisted.
"Of course not. You aren't letting anything slide. You're angry. I understand that, and you have every right to be. Going to settle this as you are now will not solve anything. It may make you feel better in the moment, but there are other ways to do that." She released him trusting that he was listening. "Yelling? Violence? None of those are the answer."
Aether let free a deep sigh. Slowly, he brought his arms up to hug (y/n) closer to him. He shook from the battle of emotions that he was fighting. He held back his hot tears as he tightened his hold.
(Y/n) did not view his crying as a weakness. It was proof of the kindness of his soul. A physical manifestation of the frustration and injustice that he felt. She welcomed his tears even if they did not fall.
"Let's go home, alright?" she whispered to him. Aether merely nodded and released her to lead the way back to their place of peace. There, (y/n) hoped to spend the rest of this day in happiness as most of their days together were. She reached for his hand, and he took hold of hers without hesitation. (Y/n) could still sense his anger lingering, but he would never turn that emotion towards her. He handled her with as much care as he could hold.
"If you hadn't gotten so angry just now, I'd have been the one to be angry in your place." She simply cared more about Aether's well-being than getting a taste of revenge. If their roles had been reversed, Aether likely would have calmed her down too. Teyvat just wasn't ready for both of them to be furious at the same time. That was all.
(Y/n) noticed that Aether led them around a somewhat circular path in the area for a bit before he truly began to take them home. She didn't mind as it appeared to be helping him cool off. His frown vanished along the way, but his usual radiance had yet to return.
Aether quietly entered the place where they'd be staying for the night. The silence that remained was not one that (y/n) could comfortably remain in.
"Are you okay now?"
"I want to be," Aether replied with an attempted smile. "I'm trying to stop thinking about it."
There weren't any jokes that came to mind to help him out, but (y/n) did have an idea. "Then just think about cute things, like the snow different tiny foxes we see whenever we travel. Or maybe the kids we've had to play with sometimes. They can be troublesome at times though." She pondered it a bit more. "I uh...can't really think of anything else right now. Maybe flowers? Those lean more towards beautiful though."
"You," Aether quietly inputed. (Y/n) blinked at him while he slowly met her gaze. "I think you're cute," he said just a little louder. "And beautiful too. You're both," he added. He was doing his best to keep a straight face as he said those things, but the smile that was making its way into his features betrayed him.
(Y/n) was still in a state of disbelief that he even said that put of nowhere. By the time she was able to react, Aether had gotten closer to her. She quickly hid her face as he pulled her into a hug.
"And you're so sweet and thoughtful. You do your best to make sure I'm always in a good mood," he continued. "Thank you for cheering me up. I love you, (y/n)."
"I love you too. I'm guessing you're not upset anymore?" (y/n) asked while still hiding her face from view.
"Far from it. In fact..." Aether let her go and gently raised her face up for him to see. His bright sunshine of a smile had returned, but that wasn't all. He leaned forward to kiss her with a passion that only he could show. "Now I'm one hundred percent better," Aether claimed.
