Chapter 1: Daily Grind

"Good morning!" I cheerfully came through the cafe door, the bell chiming. "Yo Kyri!" My coworker, Maru, peered his head out from the kitchen giving me a wink. "Hey Amako-chan!" The second worker, Lina, smiled at me, her long, straight dark-blue hair flipped over her shoulder as she turned to look at me. They were total opposites, which always kept work interesting.

Lina was calm and calculated, always keeping Maru and I in check like a sophisticated older sister. Maru, on the other hand, was a total prankster, who continuously tried to tick Lina off and usually succeeded. They were my closest friends and I always felt like I didn't deserve such good people in my life.

"Kyri, let's check your height again! Maybe you got taller!" Maru beamed at me, a mischievous grin on his face. "Yeah let's!" Lina looked particularly evil while Maru grabbed the measuring tape. I sighed angrily; I loved them, but they didn't have to treat me like I was a little kid! I was 18 after all...

Lina forced me against the wall while Maru measured me. "Aww, still short!" Lina cackled, pointing to the small number on the tape. Maru joined in, both of them teasing me about my short stature. "Guys! I'm not that short! Jeez..." Maru ruffled my hair, the wavy brown locks getting messed up by his large hands. "Yeah yeah, we know... It's just you're so cute when you get flustered."

"Agreed, keeps me from becoming a complete sadist..." We looked over at Lina who was checking the register before opening. She glanced at our gaping mouths and shrugged. "What? It's the truth... Your girl is dead inside." Before I could ask she clapped her hands together. "Let's go! We only have 5 minutes until opening!"

I glanced at the clock and ran to grab my apron that went over my long sleeve white button up and short black mini skirt. I tied it tight and ran out to take my position near the tables. Lina turned over the sign, ready to began her job as manager. Maru stood next to me, hand itching to began mixing macchiatos and lattes. We watched the clock tick down; "3...2...1!" All of us shouted and sprung into action. Let the morning rush commence.

Lina began taking orders left and right, shouting things from the register while Maru expertly kept up without breaking some much as a sweat. I carried the drinks and pastries to everyone who had ordered, sitting or standing. I dashed around the cafe, dodging customers to get to and from Maru.

After about a couple hours of madness, the morning rush began to die down. "Good job team..." Lina sighed, stretching out her arms. Maru leaned against the counter, his fawn hair almost burying his lime eyes. "Dang, just me or did it seem more manic than usual?"

"Nah, today was tough..." I had my tray wrapped up in my arms, holding it against my chest. "That's it, I'm going on break." Lina walked out from behind the counter and headed for the door. "Wait! Who said that you get to leave first?! I want my break too!" Maru chased after her, both of them leaving the cafe in an instant.

"Umm... Guys?" I quietly call, realizing that I was all alone in the cafe. "Oh no! This is bad! What if there's a big rush all of the sudden?! I'll never be able to handle it by myself! I'm... I'm nothing..."

I gripped my tray tightly. "Stop that Amako! There won't be a rush and you can take care of at least a couple customers. No big deal!" I took a deep breath and started cleaning the counter. There was no need to freak out and there was no need to tear myself down either. It's not like she's here.

The jolly bell let off a ring, bringing my attention to the door. "Welcome!" I gave them my signature cutesy smile as they walked in. It was two young men, one blonde and one... Bald?! I tried not to stare at his head, instead focusing on the one with interesting eyes. He had black scleras and yellow irises along with a tall physique. I felt my cheeks turn slightly pink at the sight of such a visually interesting, yet handsome, person.

"Umm... How may I help you two?" I bubbled, trying to keep all hesitation from out of my voice. "What would you like Master?" The blonde one had a deep robotic voice, but it retained the smoothness of human sound. "Uhhh..." The bald man scratched his face, a blank stare on his face. "I guess I'll get a latte. Do you guys do that cool art in the foam?"

"I can if you would like,"

"Sure, then I'll do that. Genos?" I assumed that this must be the other guys name. I looked at him expectantly, patiently waiting for his order. He glanced at the menu before gazing at me directly in my pale pink eyes. The sudden eye contact caught me off guard, but I managed to keep my blushing to a minimum. "I shall have a black coffee please."

"Of course!" I quickly rang them up at the register. "I'll have that right out for you two! Please take a seat wherever you would like..." I hurried to make their coffee, finishing up the latte art with impressive speed. I had made a little cat in the foam; making cute pictures in the latte foam always put a smile on my face.

Pouring the scalding black coffee into our cups, I brought the order to them, carrying the small plates with care. I gracefully set the coffee in front of them, paying attention that the latte was not shaken too much. "Whoa... Look Genos, it's a cat!"

"Yes Master, that it quite impressive." I glowed at their compliments and shyly bowed my head. "Thank you!" They smiled at me and, surprisingly, began a conversation with me.

"My name is Genos, and this is my Master, Saitama." Genos gestured to his coffee mate who seemed to get slightly annoyed. "Genos, please, do not call me Master. And please don't introduce me as that either..."

"I apologize Master!" He bowed his head until it reached the table. I giggled a little at his obliviousness; it was adorable to watch. "Anyways..." Saitama took a sip of his latte. "What's your name?"

"Kyri, Kyri Amako. It's nice to meet you both." I smiled again, my hand tightening slightly on the tray that I held against me. "I never knew that this little place existed." Saitama gestured to the rosy cafe. "Probably because I don't go out for coffee much. This is good though." He took another gulp.

"I agree." Genos sipped his plain coffee with a gentle smile. "Dude, that's straight black... How can you drink something so bitter?" Genos tilted his head in confusion. "Is this not how it is meant to be served." He looked at me to explain, his strange eyes staring into mine. "Oh, well, it can be served that way however most people find that to be bitter so they add things like milk, cream, flavored syrups, and of course sugar." I pointed to the menu board. "Most of our coffees are different varieties and combinations of those extra ingredients."

"Master, may I try yours?" Genos pointed to Saitama's latte. "No way, this is mine. Get another drink if you want to try it so badly." Genos drank the rest of his coffee before staring at the empty cup. "Here, I'll make you something!" I took the cup and saucer, bringing them back behind the counter. I quickly placed them with the other dirty dishes; Maru would deal with it later.

I went back to the table with my notepad in hand. "Okay Genos, so what flavors do you like?" He put a hand to his chin as though I was interrogating him. "I'm not very picky with what I have. Any flavors that you see fit will be fine by me."

"Okie, I'll see what I can do," I tapped my cheek while thinking of a recipe to try out. "Okay, so let's do a blonde roast for the base... Add a little milk... Just a touch of sugar and a bit of cocoa..." I looked at the final product, unsatisfied. "Oh I know! Cinnamon!" I sprinkled a touch of cinnamon over the top; the coffee ended up resembling hot chocolate, but I thought that it looked and smelled amazing.

Carrying my creative masterpiece over to the boys, I felt just a tad bit nervous. After all, I wanted Genos to like it! "Here you go, my special coffee, just for you!" I set it down, watching him take a drink. Genos's face lit up after his first taste. "This is incredible! No wonder people enjoy these fancy drinks so much." I laughed a little bit, relieved to see that he liked it. "Master, you must try this." Genos offered his cup, but Saitama held up his hand to stop him.

"Nah man, I really don't want to drink from your cup." Genos looked slightly disappointed, but as he took another sip, his smile came back. Saitama had finished his latte and was now stuck in a state of tedium, staring out the window. "Genos, I'm going to head out."

"I'll come with you Master." Genos put down his cup firmly and was about to get up when Saitama waved him off. "No, just stay here. Finish your drink or whatever. Thanks for the coffee Kyri, I'll probably come back. See ya. " And with that, Saitama walked out of the cafe, the bells jingling cheerfully.

It was now just me and Genos in the cafe. He sighed a little and I immediately felt bad. It was my fault that Saitama left Genos here by himself! "I-I'm sorry Genos..." I looked down at my feet, embarrassed. "Why are you sorry? Master is a busy man, I'm not surprised that he left, nor am I surprised that he wanted me to stay. He may not seem like it, but he is very kind. He knew that I was enjoying myself."

"Oh! Well, I'm glad that you're having a good time. I feel like I'm a little boring..." I giggled nervously and Genos tilted his head. "I do not find you boring at all. You seem quite interesting and kind." My mind went on overdrive; I wasn't used to compliments, especially not ones from attractive young men. "Oh, umm thank you!" I stuttered nervously.

I slid into the seat across from him, setting my tray down on the table. "So Genos, tell me about yourself." I was genuinely interested in hearing about him; he seemed so different from anyone else that I had met. "What would you like to know?" I looked up from his cup, consistently making eye contact. "I don't know... Tell me anything!"

"Alright then, I suppose I will tell you about my past. I grew up with my family and even though we were poor, our lives were filled with joy. That is until a rampaging cyborg came and destroyed the entire town. Miraculously, I survived despite the deaths of everyone else in the area, including my family." He eyes faltered for a moment, as if he was going to cry. However, he quickly picked my gaze back up and continued.

"I wanted to help, yet I was simply a weak 15 boy. Luckily, Dr. Kuseno, a scientist of justice, stumbled upon me and took me in. I asked him to upgrade my body, to make me a cyborg so that I could go after the one who destroyed my town. He obliged, turning me into what you see now." He gave me a small smile, amused by my wide eyes. "It had been 4 years since that day and I still search for the mad cyborg, now 19 years of age. I have defeated countless organizations and villains in my pursuit of justice, yet my search has gone dry. However, now that I have found Master Saitama, I will train to become stronger and ultimately bring the evil cyborg to an end."

My eyes were as big as saucers when he finished. "Wow..." He chuckled at my lack of words. "It is not that impressive-"

"Are you kidding?! Genos, you're probably the most incredible person I have ever meant!" The words slipped from my mouth and I didn't realize what I had said until I saw his pink cheeks. "Thank you Kyri. I appreciate your praise."

"Oh yeah, no problem..." I shyly brushed it off, trying not to reveal how flustered I felt inside. "How about you Kyri? What is your story?" Genos innocently asked the question, not realizing what he had said. I felt the color drain from my face, the memories flooding back too quickly. She was here, in my mind. I abruptly stood up, sweat running down the back of my neck.

"Kyri?!" Genos stood up too, looking at me with concern. "Are you alright?! Your heart rate suddenly spiked and you appear to be experiencing what is called a 'panic attack'." His eyes glowed slightly and I assumed that he must be checking my vitals with his special cyborg powers. "I-I-I'm fine..." I felt myself shaking and I glared angrily at my hands. "Stop." I scolded them, but they kept going.

"Perhaps this will help." Genos pulled me into a tight hug. "What the?! Genos, what are you doing?!"

"I have done research on how to calm people, for I may encounter distressed persons after certain events, such as villain attacks. One way to make people feel better and reduce stress, along with heart rate, is this mechanism called a hug. How do you feel now?"

"I must admit, I do feel better. Safer almost... Who knew that cyborgs could give such good hugs..."

I let out a small sigh and gave him a shaky smile. "Better... Much better. Thank you Genos," He gave the most pure smile that I have ever seen before letting go. "I'm glad to know that I was able to help you." Suddenly, I heard the jingle of our bell. Instinctively I turned around to look at the people who came in, greeting them in my normal cutesy style. "Hiya! Welcome in!"

"Aww, you're so cute Amako-chan." Lina put her hands to her face, Maru nodding in agreement. Upon seeing them, I remembered why I was the only person working in the cafe. "Wait! I'm supposed to be mad at you guys! You just left me all by myself here!" I crossed my arms, pouting. They just laughed, pink appearing on their cheeks.

"You can't expect us to feel remorse when you're looking at us like that! And you wonder why we treat you like a child!" Maru and Lina were leaning against each other, cracking up. I felt myself blushing and turned back to Genos so that I could ignore them. "Sorry about that... They love to tease me."

"It's alright, I enjoyed watching." I felt myself burn a little. "Not cool!" I felt betrayed as Genos chuckled. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, offering it to me. "If you wouldn't mind, I would like to have your cell phone number."

I practically heard Maru and Lina's jaws hit the floor; I blinked a couple times, hesitantly taking the phone and punching in my number. "Thank you." He bowed before walking over to the door. "I will text you late Kyri." Genos smiled at me, waving before he left the cafe. "Bye!" I waved at him, holding the tray as if it was my life line.

"WHAT WAS THAT?!" Maru and Lina attacked me as I held up my tray in defense. "Nothing, it was nothing!" I reached to grab the empty cup as they stared at me with suspicion. "Are you sure? Because you were here all by yourself with that guy..." Lina smirked, making my face turn completely red. I waved my arms around, backing up against the wall. "No! You've got the wrong idea! I just met him!"

"Hmm if you say so..." She snatched the tray and cup from my hands, leaning in close to him, making me uncomfortable. She gave me a small flick on my forehead before going behind the counter.

A couple more hours passed and my shift ended before I realized that humans needed to eat. I sighed, throwing on my baggy windbreaker and left the cafe with quick goodbyes to my friends. The sun was bright, the wind crisp, tossing my hair around. I took a deep breath of fresh air, my mood already improving. The stress of the day melted away as I took in the sunlight. "Perfect day to go there!"

I ran down the street, my red Converse high tops hitting the ground with a satisfying sound. After checking multiple times that no one was following me, I ran deeper into City Z; I jumped over the fence that separated the normal parts from the "monstrous" part. I never believed those silly rumors that a deadly monster lived in that area, but I was glad that it ended up clearing out the people. It left me to enjoy my secret spot alone.

It used to be a park, an old swing set still remained in fair condition. The grass had grown out long and wild with flowers sprouting outside their old barriers. The trees had spread their branches out long, the weeping willows bending down to touch the earth with their wispy arms. The cherry blossom trees showered the delicate pink petals over the park every time the wind whispered.  I found a particular spot near the swings where the grass was soft and the sun poured down on me.

I threw my backpack down near a rock and laid down, closing my eyes. "Guess I should eat my lunch... In a second though." I savored the sun's warmth, my body beginning to glow slightly. I smiled gently, all the pain that stuck with me easing away. My memories faded away, the sun's light intoxicating me like a drug. I took a deep breath of the air; it smelled like cherry blossoms and lemon grass with a hint of lavender.

I let out a sigh, happy to be here. I heard my phone buzz and I sat up looking at my backpack. I dusted the grass from off of me, daintily walking over to grab both my phone and my bento box. I sat down on one of the swings, gently swaying back and forth as I opened my handmade bento.

After putting a bite in my mouth, I opened my phone to see a text from Genos.

Hello, this is Genos. We met at the cafe this morning.

"Aww, that's kinda cute. He texts with proper grammar..."

i remember  ^-^ what's up?

I am at Master Saitama's house. I am recording his training habits in my notebook. How about you?

just chillin'... got off of work a little while ago so i'm just kinda hanging out and eating my lunch/dinner

Earlier today, you seemed quite distressed. Would you like to talk about it?

I swallowed the bite of rice I had with a bit more force than normal. I took deep breaths and focused on the sun's warmth. My past was not something that I liked to talk about.

no, that's okay *^-^* thank you though... i'm fine

I knew my words were lies, but I couldn't bring myself to talk about it. Not yet and not over the phone.

Alright, I will not bother you about it. However, if you need me to help you, please don't hesitate to ask for my assistance.

for sure! thanks again Genos

I looked up to see that the sun was starting to set. I stood up, retrieving my backpack, and began to leave. I watched as the typing bubble popped up on Genos's side. "He sure is taking a long time..."

Suddenly, I felt a hand slip around my mouth. My eyes widened as I tried to activate my powers; but it was too late. They had grabbed my hands, tying my wrists together tightly. The put a blindfold on me and a gag in my mouth. I felt them snatch my phone away, followed by a snicker. A pause, and then the satisfying sound of my pink phone being snapped shut.

"What the hell is going on?! Somebody, please help me!" My thoughts screamed out the words that I couldn't say. And unfortunately, we were inside of the abandoned parts of City Z; nobody would see me or even know that I was being kidnapped.

I struggled as my captor picked my up with ease. "Don't struggle dear. You'll be fine with out master." I felt myself hit against hard metal, the body of the mysterious voice carrying me. I activated my power, forcing a beam of light into what I assumed was his face. "

AHH!" he cried out, more annoyed than hurt. "Fine! If that's how you want to be then so be it!" I felt myself hit against the ground. Then a hand pushed itself into my pressure points, sending pain shooting through my body. My consciousness slipped away, leaving me completely vulnerable to the pervert.

a/n: yes, i have started yet another project ^-^'... bad idea? i hope not! anyway, i have no idea how flip phones work really, so i'll try my best because that's what they use in the anime/manga. anyways, that's all! enjoy <3 peachy
