"um." mei says awkwardly, noticing how uncomfortable the boy looked as he stretches his arms up. they were both on ricky's sofa except mei was previously laid down on one side and hao was doing the same on the other, except that his body was too long.

she hoped what ricky said wasn't true and that she didn't actually confess to him, along with almost kissing him for the hundredth time. she doesn't understand how recently their tension was getting stronger, it made her nervous and she does think about it a lot.

he sits up and looks at her. "i hope you know i skipped uni because of you." he says, moving a little closer to the girl who was now sat down. "i stayed asleep just for you to not be lonely." he scoffs.

"it's finee, they won't care." she shrugs. "but did you know the results are coming out soon?" she asks the boy who was now looking at her.

he shakes his head slowly. "already? we did them yesterday." he says in confusion.

she shrugs. "apparently, so do you have your tablet with you?" she asks the boy who responds with a shake of his head. "where is it? i'll get it for you." she stands up, and fails as her banging headache pulls her back down.

mei wasn't the type to get terrible hangovers, but now that she drank after such a long period of time, it was somehow only today she got a sore throat and headache. she felt she might've drank a little too much with renjun.

hao laughs. "i'll get it, you and your drunk ass." he gets up and walks out of the room. "give me a bit." he says as the girl nods.

mei sighs and decides to take this time to open her phone again and reread her messages with multiple groupchats and the people that she was stupidly drunk texting.

she first went through her messages with hanbin, and she almost cries at the "i miss you" messages that were sent and how bad she felt. no matter what, even if she likes hao, she will never not feel bad for hanbin; he was too kind and loving to forget about.

she closes the conversation with hanbin and frowns when she sees yunji's name in her recent messages. she gulps and opens it with bad expectations. and to her surprise, it was worse than she had thought.

mei didn't actually hate yunji as much as she acts like she does. it was only a simple reason of her being the biggest cunt to mei for no fucking reason. she couldn't lie she felt bad for being so rude, which was completely weird. mei??? feeling bad??? but she laughed a little at some of the things she had said.

she scoffs and moves to the messages with hao. and even from one text she felt like throwing her phone across the room in embarrassment. "i want you?? really??" she complains to herself in complete embarrassment.

she scrolls up a bit more and her hand shot to her mouth in shock. "he called me cutie again???" she whispers, squinting to make sure she saw it right.

before mei could scream or giggle at the messages for longer, she hears hao's footsteps coming into the room. "the results are out again." he says as he tiredly sits right next to her. "should we look?"he asks.

mei nods and since she obviously didn't have her tablet, she opened up her school emails and the two look at each other's devices, ready to press onto the email that they don't even feel nervous about anymore.

"Congratulations! You are Rank 1." the two read out at the same time with tired eyes and voices.

"yay, i'm first again!" mei points at their new identical emails. "hao look we're joint first again!" she laughs enthusiastically.

"well done." hao mumbles before closing his eyes. "let me go back to sleep." he wraps his arms around the girl comfortably.

mei laughs, patting the boy's back. "you seem like the hungover one, why are you so tired?" she asks, trying not to freak out at the fact he was literally hugging her.

"i literally stayed up because you passed out on me." he complains. "now shut the fuck up i want my rest."

mei rolls her eyes. "you had your rest. and i think we should go out later and go to the cinema at night like my drunk self planned."

hao hums. "yeah whatever, what time is it?"

"literally one in the afternoon." she replies, checking her phone. "what time do you want us to leave?"

"five." he says, suddenly snuggling closer to her. "now shut the fuck up mei i need my comfort."

"aww am i your comfort?" she asks, looking down at the drowsy boy who's head was now resting on her chest. "you really just went back to sleeping after the email was sent?"

he nods lightly. "wait no you're not fuck off." he switches up, realising he just admitted to finding comfort in the girl. "i'm nodding at the last thing you said."

"never in my life would i expect to see you so cute." she chuckles, kissing the boy's forehead again.

"god why do you keep kissing me?" he whines, touching his forehead. "i know you're in love with me and all but stop it."

she snickers. "if you hate it so bad i can try your li–"

"i'm going back to sleep." he says, shutting the girl up from her (seriously concerning) request.

mei hums. "yeah okay whatever." she rolls her eyes before looking back at the email. she smiles to herself at the thought she was first again.

but a worry came to her mind when she thinks about hao and his parents, now that she is sure they rarely even care or support him, she feels scared that the results might affect something.

she tries to brush it off before setting an alarm for half four and placing her phone down slowly, trying not to wake up the boy on her chest.

mei smiles at the fact that he just started cuddling her, and her confidence about possibly getting hao to like her came back.

timeskip — the arcade

the two arrive both wearing comfy clothes and with absolutely no energy or enthusiasm to be here. even though they didn't want to go out, they wanted to spend some time with each other.

"i want drinks." mei says, grabbing the boy's hand and pointing at the counter.

"arcade drinks are so expensive mei, don't get them." he says, trying to pull her back.

"i am expensive, and i don't care." she shrugs, pulling him to the counter where a bunch of sweets and drinks were.

"what do you want?" she asks the tired boy, "i'm probably just going to get water." she says.

hao nods. "i'll get water too then."

mei rolls her eyes. "copycat." she mocks before looking at the smiling worker.

"how can i help you?" she asks politely, secretly admiring the two on the other side of the counter.

"two waters please." mei says awkwardly.

the woman nods before pressing some buttons and turning around, "you can pay there." she points at the card mashine.

mei nods before activating her apple pay and quickly tapping the machine. "that sound makes me so happy." she laughs, looking up to the boy who was already staring at her.

he smiles. "nepo baby."

"shut up." she scoffs as the woman puts two drinks onto the counter. "oh thank you."

"you're welcome, have a good day." she bows with a smile. "also, are you two dating? couples usually get discounts on–"

"yeah we're dating, aren't we mei?" hao asks the girl as he turns to her with the sweetest smile she's ever seen him do.

mei stands there in shock staring at the worker before laughing and looking at hao. "yeah, we are."

"aw, that's cute." the worker chuckles. "well i hope you two have a good time today, the arcade seems to be pretty full today. you can get some discounts on food later if you wish."

"thank you, bye!" mei waves before walking away while holding hao's hand. once they get to somewhere where the girl couldn't see them. "yo why the fuck would you say that?"

hao shrugs. "why not? we can get discounts."

"oh my god do you want to date me?" mei giggles, squeezing his hand.

the boy scoffs. "you wish, now where do you want to go first?" he asks before mei immediately pulls him to the most basic place: the claw machine.

"girl you make us go to a massive arcade and you want to do this?" hao asks with a scoff, "don't be boring."

mei rolls her eyes. "do it or i'm k–"

"or you'll kiss me okay whatever." he rolls his eyes back, moving aside. "i wanna see how bad you are at games."

mei looks around before sticking up her middle finger at the boy. "go kill yourself this is why i hate you."

"that's not what you said to me last night." he snickers, causing mei to freeze. "i want you sooo baddd hao!!" he mocks her.

mei lets go of his hand. "we do not talk about that. now let me fucking do this, i have you know i haven't been to an arcade in ages."

he scoffs. "go on then."

she scoffs back and slides a coin she randomly found in her pocket into the machine. a thing about mei is that she's obviously really smart, but when it comes to anything outside of academics or music, she's always a bit stupid.

mei's eyes focus onto the huge octopus plush at the back corner and she presses the buttons – quite slowly as she fails to focus on it properly. "do you think i can get it?"

hao snorts. "that was painful to watch, and no."

she huffs as she presses the red button and the claw drops down, not even managing to scrape a bit of the head. mei sighs as she didn't even get close. "shit is rigged."

hao laughs. "i'll try get one too." he says as he slides a coin into the claw machine next to hers. "first to get one doesn't have to pay for the cinema?" he asks.

mei glares at him. "yeah watch me." she says before getting a handful of coins out of her purse and sliding one in. her eyes were way more focused this time, and she managed to get it close enough above the octopus.

hao on the other hand got a red fox plush in one try, even surprising himself. laughs as he bends down to collect the plush from the bottom. "look what i got in one try." he chuckles.

mei scoffs as she was now onto her third try. "how the fuck did you even do that..."

"i'm better than you, obviously." he shrugs, leaning onto the machine. "chop chop mei, i'm sure our movie is going to start in like an hour."

mei rolls her eyes. "you're distracting me." she complains as she quickly attempts to get the toy. but once she doesn't again, she sighs in defeat. "i hate this."

hao chuckles and takes a coin from her pocket sneakily before sliding it in, being the fourth coin. "let me show you, dumbass."

"call me a dumbass and i'm going to fucking murder you." she threatens, but hao didn't react as he stands behind the girl and puts his arms around her to hold the buttons she was holding.

"mhm sure you will." he says sarcastically before guiding the girl to the back again, like her other attempts.

mei felt a familiar feeling as she feels his hot breath at the back of her neck, making her feel hot herself. her mind went blank as the boy quickly managed to take the red octopus and the two watch intently as the claw moves and successfully falls.

mei squeals, bending down immediately to take it from the bottom. "oh my god look!" she laughs, "it's my octopus memoji."

hao scoffs. "you and your fucksss memoji." he rolls his eyes but he smiles at the sight of her being so excited.

"i called it lubob." she says, hugging it closer to her chest. "oh my god i love it, thank you."

"you're welcome, but you do you're paying for the cinema right?" he chuckles.

"nah whatever that's fine, but ah i'm so happy!" she squeals and kisses his cheek before turning around. "let's play something else."

hao chuckles, not really reacting to the short kiss. "you're going to lose."

"mate i'll beat you at mario kart, watch me." she scoffs, shoving past him and speedwalking to the racing game on the other side of the arcade.

hao chuckles and follows slowly behind her and as she sits down, he notices another figure sitting on the seat next to her which makes him frown.

the random boy smiles at mei, "do you want to play with me?" he asks with a tone hao didn't like – it sounded quite flirty.

mei's eyes widen at the unknown boy. "no, i was going to play with someone else." she says coldly.

his eyebrows furrow, "who? do you have a boyfriend or something?"

"no but-"

"you're sat in my seat." hao interrupts, making the two turn to the taller boy with crossed arms. "mind if you play after?"

the boy's eyes then widen, recognising hao. "oh, you're-"

"zhanghao and mirae, yeah. can we play?" hao asks, more politely this time.

he immediately gets up, "yeah i'm sorry." he walks away to another game quickly.

the duo laugh before hao sits down. "i'd be a bit offended if you went to play with someone else."

"is someone jealous?" mei teases, "you literally want me."

"stop being delusional." he scoffs. "should we start?" he asks. mei nods and the two slide in coins at the same time that let them be in the same game.

"who are you picking?" hao asks, taking a glance at mei's screen. "wow, rosalina?" he laughs. (i was a rosalina girly since my childhood i have a plushie with her right next to me).

"she's my wife shut up." mei chuckles before looking at hao's screen. "of course you chose shy guy, suits you well."

"don't be a hater." he shrugs. the two soon finish up selecting their things and the game was about to start. "watch me beat you in fucking mario kart."

"fuck off i'll batter you." she scoffs as the game counts down and the race started straight away. "betting my networth rosalina beats shy guy's ass."

"shut up i'm literally in front of you." he laughs, actually trying to win the race. the two's rivalry disappeared in school ranks but now it suddenly came back in a mario kart game, which hao found amusing.

"FUCK OFF I HATE BANANAS." she shouts in annoyance, watching as she went from third to fifth straight away. "hao what place are you?"

"second, what are you? last?" he snorts.

"suck your mum no i am not actually." she retorts. "don't get your big ego up again."

"my bad top student." he chuckles.

after a hilarious three laps of screaming, cursing, mocking, laughing and a lot of arguing, the two ended up in first and second, which clearly reflected their real life struggles.

"fuck you." hao scoffs looking at his character with a 2nd place next to it. "shit is rigged."

"mhm, that's what i thought." she snickers as the two step off. "what now?" she asks, but hao waasn't paying attention as his eyes were focused somewhere else. "where are you–"

she soon gets cut off as hao quickly pulls the girl to his chest for a hug. "don't say anything just shut up until i say so." he whispers. mei's heart started to beat rapidly just from a hug.

she doesn't know why she's so obsessed with the small physical touch the two have been doing, but the feeling of hugging him was so comforting for no reason.

once he lets go, he awkwardly laughs. "sorry, i saw one of yunji's friends." he says. mei being the dumb girl she is tries to turn her head but hao stops her. "girl don't look there."

she huffs. "whatever, come with me i want to do a shooting game." she says, pulling him into an area where there was a place for two people.

mei spots it and she pushes the taller boy into the small room and follows after. "look we have to shoot... dinosaurs." she laughs.

hao rolls his eyes. "you are so weird."

the girl shrugs, sliding her coin in. "says you. anyways, let's play." she pats the boy's back before taking the mini gun into her hands.

the two spent the next hour competitively versing each other in any small game in the huge arcade (since i'm lazy and don't want to bore you) also being surrounded by couples which did bring in a cute mood to the two's 'date'.

but now that their movie was at seven, the two decided to leave and go over to the cinema that was literally across the road. mei, obviously having to pay, bought them the tickets and their food.

the two agreed on watching fnaf (mei bribed him) and now she was holding his hand once again as they walked up the stairs together to their seats, which were at the back.

"why am i lowkey scared." hao says, letting go of the girl's hand as they sit down.

mei places their drinks and popcorn down and snorts. "it won't be scary, trust me."

"yeah but did you know that i am literally a scaredy cat.." (listen to scaredy cat by dpr ian thx xx) he says awkwardly.

mei chuckles. "aww, is the top student scared?" she coos jokingly, cupping his face.

he takes her cold hand of his face. "don't touch me when you're going to talk to me like that." he rolls his eyes.

"fine then." she shrugs as the adverts begin to play. "wait but are you actually scared?"

he nods. "horribly, actually." he admits.

"hold my hand then." mei whispers as she takes her hand out, laughing at the boy's scared face. "i'll be your little protector."

"um..." he looks down at the hand she took out. "no. but you got the little right."

"shut up." mei rolls her eyes before intertwining their hands. "if you end up crying i will fucking laugh at you."

hao shakes his head. "i wouldn't."

"you think that." she chuckles before giving his hand a squeeze. "wow don't you think this is such a cute date?"

"this is not a date." he frowns.

"why are you actually so in denial?" she whisper-shouts. "what's wrong with me, huh?" she complains.

hao shakes his head and takes his drink. "nothing."

the movie consisted of a lot of hao getting a little frightened by the bare minimum as mei laughs at him. he squeezed her hand a lot if he felt scared too, which mei found cute. and the most cliché, their hands touched while getting popcorn after they stopped holding hands.

perfect date? i think so.

hao and mei were now walking home together, laughing about their day – which hao silently admitted that was a date.

hao was still staying at ricky's house, which meant they didn't have to part ways so fast, which made walking home in the dark so comforting for the two.

as they walked into mei's private neighbourhood, they knew their time together was going to end now. "thank you." mei smiles. "i actually enjoyed today."

if you told hao and mei that a few months ago they'd be being nice and touchy with each other without arguing, they would have laughed in your face.

he chuckles, looking down at her. "of course, but you do owe me for making me miss out on uni."

"wow. was the whole date with me paying not enough?" she rolls her eyes, stopping in front of her gate. "so ungrateful."

"no i didn't mean it like that–" he laughs. "thank you though, but i expect something in return too." he says as he lets go of her hand, the warmth leaving straight away.

"hm, how about this?" mei chuckles, gripping onto his hoodie and getting on her tiptoes to leave a sweet kiss on his cheek, which lasted longer than the first time.

hao stands in shock, the feeling of her soft lips on his cheek lingering. mei quickly waves and opens her gate, "bye hao!!" she giggles before walking in and leaving the boy dumbfounded outside.

once she opens the door, she immediately bumps into her father who's arms were crossed and looking down at her sternly. "where have you been?"

mei gulps, "i was just hanging out with zh–"

"oh! that's fine then." he chuckles, patting his daughter's back. "sleep well. me and your mother won't be here tomorrow due to the fashion brand promotions."

mei sighs in relief. "okay, thank you." she smiles before running upstairs. as soon as she reaches her room, she jumps onto her bed and giggles to herself. "why was that such a good date?"
