— mei's parents pov.
- 3rd person.

it was four in the afternoon and a storm was currently raging in their area – the winds were gusting across the country and it was unluckily enough that the rain only seemed to bullet down exactly in the place where the universities were.

many students rushed home at this time to avoid the colds and the sicknesses that always resulted from it, however mei was still in campus to finish catching up on the work she had missed out on.

her parents were driving back from their warehouse, and were going to pass by their daughter's new university if it wasn't for the rain. so they decided to just drive home normally without stopping by instead.

"did you see those photos mei sent?" her mother asks, chuckling at her phone. "she was babysitting their professor's children a few days ago, it was so cute."

her father nods. "she told me she bought them necklaces and then bought couple rings for her and hao." he laughs at his wife's face of shock. "looks like i'm paying for his university fees."

"i still have hope for hanbin, they're fine now." her mother crosses her arms. "hao hasn't even kissed her yet, there's nothing there."

"nothing there?" her father says with a laugh. "they're getting along now – very greatly i must say. they even have couple rings."

her mother shakes her head in denial, "okay i mean she's cute with both but i still think she will get with hanbin." she scoffs as she looks out of the window and then realises they're driving past mei's university.

the adults still drive past the university, but the woman notices a walking figure getting soaked in the rain. "isn't that zhanghao? what a coincidence." mei's mother asks in concern, pointing at a boy that they were about to drive past. "why is he walking alone in the rain, without an umbrella?"

"oh my god wait it is!" her father says, recognising the boy. however, when they drive past him, they notice through the wet mirror that he looks rather miserable. "he looks depressed." he says, his eyebrows furrowing.

"do you think we should bring him home? he must feel sick." her mother says in worry, "turn around we'll go get him." she orders, still a bit taken aback by the fact they were just talking about him.

her father hums before quickly making a U-turn back to where hao was walking – or more like trudging on the sidewalk. they make a stop and thankfully the roads were clear as the boy notices straight away.

— hao pov.
- 3rd person.

hao halts, recognising the white car that parked next to him. he frowns in confusion but the window slides down, making him meet eyes with mei's parents for the first time.

"hao are you okay?" mei's mother asks out of the window, causing the boy to pause in shock and quickly wipe his tears. "it's really cold and you're walking alone.."

"uhh," he falters. "um, i'm fine."

"it's pouring it down, come inside we'll take you home." she offers, but the boy shakes his head. "hao you will get sick, please come in."

hao sighs, knowing he couldn't say no to them as he didn't want to get sick himself. "i was actually walking from home.." he admits as he hesitantly opens the car door.

"do you want us to take you back or?" mei's father asks, turning behind to the soaking boy. "where were you heading off to in the first place?"

"i was on my way to ricky's.." he replies, looking down at his phone that was unfortunately dead.

mei's mother nods. "eh, we'll take you to our house for now if that's fine."

"are you sure? i can just stay with ri–"

"we'll take care of you first, sweetheart. you're crying." mei's mother says before the car starts again, driving the way back to the huang house.

hao almost resists but decides to take the chance for now and he'll text ricky later. he didn't notice him crying was so obvious as he assumed that it blended in with the rain. "okay.. thank you."

his hands were red and cold, he shivered even in the warmth of the car that had heated seats. "where's mei?" he asks, oddly to himself. why does he care?

"studying at campus, yuta will pick her up in like ten minutes." her father explains to the boy. "so hao, is this our first time meeting by the way?"

hao chuckles a little and nods. "i think so.." he doesn't recall a full interaction with the two at all and he couldn't lie that he was really nervous talking to such wealthy people. especially mei's parents.

"it's nice to meet you, hao." her mother chuckles. "but are you okay? you were crying in the rain by yourself, you looked awful."

hao's eyes dart around random areas of the car nervously. "i think i'm fine." he says softly, pulling his sleeves up to keep his hands warm.

"do you want to talk about it when we get back?" her mother asks. "we'll get you warm and you can talk to mei too if you want."

hao shrugs, not really thinking too much to fully understand what she said. "if you wouldn't mind.. i'll probably just talk to mei about it."

"that's fine sweetheart, mei is actually really good at comforting. i bet she'll make you feel better." she says with a smile through the rear mirror.

her father hums in agreement. "i've been hearing the program we put in is working, are you two getting along better now?"

"way better." hao chuckles. "i didn't really think she would be this calm."

"we get that a lot." her father laughs. "you know she normally prefers to be called mei as it makes her feel like a softer person." he says.

"she's not the biggest fan of her korean name, is she?" her mother laughs at the man. "it feels like she has two names for the type of person she is."

hao nods, understanding what they mean. he never really knew the real reason why she always wanted to be called mei, he just assumed it sounded better to her. even though hanbin mentioned it to him a long time ago.

"oh!" he hears mei's father say. "yuta just drove past us, i think mei will be home very soon." he chuckles, pointing at a black car that went past them.

"you can do anything you want once we arrive by the way," he mother says to hao. "don't be scared to feel comfortable in our house, you're welcome anytime."

her father nods. "i've had a liking to you since ages ago actually, has mei told you?" he asks the boy.

hao shakes his head. "someone told me briefly but mei doesn't really talk about you guys."

"wow." her mother says in offence. "i can't believe she doesn't talk about us!" she dramatically fake cries.

"probably to avoid those nepotism allegations." her father jokes, making hao snort. "she tells us how you call her one all of the time."

"i find it hilarious how she used to actually want to beat you in ranks to 'make us proud'. but now look at her, always talking about you." her mother exposes her with a laugh. "keep this a secret she might kill us."

throughout the car drive, even with all of the small talk, hao felt jealous; he learned how close mei is to her parents and how much they all get along with each other.

not that he was mad about it, but he wished for a similar energy back at his house. but it obviously wasn't the case at all after being indirectly kicked out of his house.

he notices the familiar gate to the private neighbourhood, and how mei's dad easily put it a code and the gates opened up, letting them enter the area.

hao was mostly familiar with this place due to being with ricky so much, but it was a rule to not tell anybody who doesn't live in this place the password.

he recognises mei's house as it was only a house away from ricky's. he wanted to go and tell ricky that he was here but he felt too mentally exhausted to go over, and his phone was dead.

he watched as their garage door opens and how the car drives in smoothly. he spots other cars parked and now he really knows how rich they actually are. once the car was parked, mei's mother turns back to him. "come on." she smiles.

hao follows and gets out of their car, slowly following her parents into a door that was probably connected to mei's house. he felt so small in the vicinity of their house, and admired the minimalistic decorations in their hallway.

"our heating is already on, just sit on the sofa and our maids will get you some clothes okay?" the woman smiles at him, hao smiling back.

"thank you so much." he says. he knows that if he wasn't in the worst possible mood right now he would be refusing any kind of help.

"of course." she replies, "do you want anything to drink?"

"just water, if that's fine." he sighs, knowing he's cried so much already. he wanted to cry again but not in front of such people, who are also mei's parents, which he has to keep reminding himself.

he took his time awkwardly sitting on their huge sofa and gazing around her house. it was a similar model to ricky's except hers was less fancy and more simple, which suits mei if he was honest. especially after seeing her with kids a few days ago.

a maid comes over, handing him a glass of water. he kindly thanks her before taking a small sip and thinking to himself about his parents.

he felt so miserable. he'd usually be hearing longer lectures from them, but somehow today it hit him so deep that he walked out.

hao would never, ever do that. especially after feeling guilty for being mean to his parents. even as horrible as they were, he'd never want to be horrible to them.

"hao." he looks up to see mei's father smiling. "we got you some warmer clothes, mei designed these recently too so tell us how it is after you get ready." he says, passing the boy some comfortable clothes.

hao nods and slowly takes them with a small smile. "oh, thank you." he says before awkwardly standing up. "where should i change?"

"this bathroom." the man says, walking the boy to a door and opening the door for him. "we'll wash your clothes for you when you change too."

"oh, no it's fine." hao chuckles, walking into the huge bathroom.

"no really, it won't take long." he smiles before closing the door and leaving hao there.

hao took a moment to look at himself in the mirror and he notices how pale he looked, and how his hair was drenched and his ears were pink from the cold. he takes a deep breath before looking at the clothes, which were apparently designed by mei.

"what do you mean that's a perfect idea." mei crosses her arms, sitting next to yuta in his car. she finished her study session with renjun earlier than she thought, and was telling yuta about her little plan.

yuta sighs. "i mean it's smart but you need to have a limit of people, don't just let everyone in."

mei hums. "forty?" she shrugs. "last time there was like seventy, and nothing went wrong. but this is only for me and hao."

"awe, you really care about him don't you?" the older teases, "surprised you're not swooning over hanbin right now."

she rolls her eyes. "shut up." she looks out of the window to see her neighbourhood. "well it's mainly my party but i want to celebrate his too."

"well if we just use the right security it'll be a good party for him." yuta shrugs. "but don't do anything stupid."

"i would never!" mei giggles, watching as yuta pulled into the garage. "oh, did my parents come early?" she notices her dad's car.

"yeah they came early because of the storm." he explains, making the girl nod as the two get out of the car.

"fuck it's cold." she complains. "if i knew it was raining i wouldn't be wearing a skirt." she scoffs, pulling it down so she wouldn't feel the prick of wind.

yuta laughs at her. "you never care about weather, remember when you would always wear hanbin's hood–"

"anyways!" mei stops him from speaking. "i didn't even tell you what i'm getting him for his birthday am i? i planned it secretly." she says, opening the door to the house.

yuta shakes his head, "what is it?" he says before locking the door as mei slid her boots off. "did you design him something or?"

mei chuckles. "maybe, but let's not talk about it yet because it's a surprise." she says as she quickly walks down the hallway, and into the living room.

"hii." mei joyfully runs over to her parents who both give her a hug and a couple kisses on the cheek. "you're here early." she says, looking around to greet the maids.

before her parents could even explain why, the bathroom door opens revealing hao with puffy eyes and wearing clothes that mei recognised a little too much.

she gasps. "what are you doing in my house?" she asks, but then watches how the maid takes the damp clothes in his hand. "are you okay?"

hao awkwardly stands there, looking at the adults for help. "you see," her father says, putting his hand on the girl's shoulder. "he was just walking alone in the rain."

mei frowns, walking up to the boy and notices how awful he looks. "have you eaten yet?" she asks the boy who shakes his head slowly. mei sighs. "can you get the chef to make us some food please?" she asks the maids who nod before running to the kitchen.

mei knew something had happened from how he wasn't even in campus today, and hao always had classes on saturday mornings. it was only the afternoon and even ricky mentioned that he was busy.

"okay, um. we'll go upstairs. can you take the food up when it's ready? thank you." she says, taking the boy's hand and dragging him up her spiral stairs.

hao couldn't even speak from how shitty he felt and how he did cry in the bathroom for a good minute before walking out.

mei takes him into her room and pulls him onto the chair opposite his vanity. "okay, so why weren't you in campus today?" she asks, plugging something in.

"what are you doing?" he asks, his voice calm even after how he was crying.

"drying your hair." she says, ruffling his still wet hair. "so answer me, why weren't you in?"

hao shrugs. "i wanted to study alone.." he says, which was the truth as he didn't feel like coming in, especially with the storm.

mei looks at him through the mirror. "okay, it's obvious something happened. were you crying?"

"um," he says nervously, but saw how she looked at him in the mirror and he knew he couldn't lie to her at this point. "maybe."

mei sighs. "do you want to talk about it after i dry your hair?" she asks softly, taking the hairdryer in her hands. hao nods and she smiles before turning it on and running her hands through his hair gently.

hao was confused on why mei didn't seem really react massively to him. like he was just in her house randomly wearing clothes she designed and he looks awful. but he finally felt warm again, both from the heating and how nice it felt to be in a calm atmosphere with mei.

once she finishes, she taps him. "come here." she orders, making him stand up. mei doesn't know how but she pulls him into a hug. "i know you need it so don't fucking complain." she says.

the hug lasted around two minutes, and hao felt somewhat relieved but still felt like crying. "we'll get comfy, i was worried you know." she sighs, letting him follow her onto her bed. he felt awkward sitting on it from how big it was but he did so anyway.

"so.." she starts, holding his hand. "tell me everything." mei says, rubbing circles with her thumb into his palm. "if you're comfortable to, obviously."

hao doesn't know what came over him but his emotions were so strong that he started to cry again, making him look away. "wait," he says, trying his best to wipe his tears.

she nods. "take your time." she waits in silence as she could only hear his quiet sobs muffled into the jumper he was wearing. she smiled to herself a little at the fact he was wearing it.

"mei," he says, still looking the opposite direction of where she was sat. "do you think i'm enough? academically, i mean." he asks.

mei frowns, now acknowledging that the cause of hao being sad was his parents. she felt horrible for him and she sighs. "hao look at me." hao hesitantly looks at her and she chuckles at hao cute she found him.

mei instinctively kisses his forehead. "you are enough, you know that right?" she says softly, wiping his tears gently. "is it your parents?" she asks.

the tears failed to hold as the tears began streaming down again. "yeah," he sobs. "as much as i try, they aren't proud of anything i do."

"i'm proud of you." mei says, smiling at the boy who was now clinging onto the girl's blanket. "do you mind telling me what they were saying to you?"

"i don't really remember everything" he tells. "they just think i'm focusing on you more than academics, even though i'm literally first by myself again."

she looks at him in pain, she couldn't ever imagine how he felt. even though there was supposed to be a rivalry, she knew that hao was a million times more hardworking than she was.

"but i don't get it." she says, a hint of anger in her voice. "you focus on studies more than anybody i know, how is that not enough?"

"i don't know." he shrugs. "but are you just saying that because you're always perfect and don't need to study?"

"hao i would never." mei says softly. "you're way more perfect than i am, what are you talking about? this isn't about me."

"but your life just seems so perfect and i'm always so jealous of you. i always cry to myself when i think about you. and no don't take it romantically." he complains.

mei chuckles. "okay i won't, but my life isn't perfect and there's nothing to be jealous of. when it comes to academics i hate to admit that you are a TAD bit better than me."

"there's everything to be jealous of. why do you think i hated you in the first place?" he asks complainingly. "i used to hate your face and how effortlessly you did things, my friends always talked about how great you were."

mei was not aware of this at all. she knew he was jealous but now this much. "but you're... kind of better than me." she says, still trying to keep her top student pride up.

"well be worse for a day because you being second in ranks isn't enough." he jokes. "but honestly, i hate you for that. my parents do still think you're worse than me though."

she then kisses his cheek. "i never realised how fragile you really are." she chuckles. "it's cute to see actually."

"stop flirting with me mid mental breakdown you nepo baby." hao complains whilst sobbing and laughing at the same time, touching his cheek.

"sorry sorry." mei laughs, happy that she managed to make him laugh. "but honestly, your parents suck. and you need to stop thinking about me all of the time, like i know i'm amazing but don't get jealous."

hao scoffs. "shut up mei." he looks away from her again. "why are you actually good at comforting?" he asks.

mei chuckles. "renjun used to comfort me a lot when i was younger, since i had a lot of mood swings and break downs." she explains.

"i like your nice side, keep it." hao smiles up at her, making her roll her eyes.

"i might just for you but you're not telling anyone that." mei scoffs, gently playing with the boy's hair.

"boringg." he says. he doesn't know how such a small talk could let him feel so comfortable around the girl as he didn't even mind how close she was getting.

as mei still played with his hair, the room was just full of hao's breathing. mei looks down at him, and the two keep eye contact for a few seconds before both of their eyes subsequently dropped to each other's lips.

hao wasn't risking it, and he moves a little so that the two's distance increases again. "i'm sleepy now, i think i've cried too much." hao laughs dryly.

mei clears her throat quickly puts her duvet on top of him. "sleep then." she smiles, letting him lay down. "i'll just sit here. but what about the food?"

"oh you eat it, i'll eat some when i wake up i promise." he says. "thank you though."

mei nods. "anytime."

"this is so gross ew i hate you." he complains, looking the other way. "but we are not telling my friengroup this happened – oh wait text ricky about it actually."

"and renjun?" she asks. "please???" she begs, knowing how much she will panic to her bestfriend.

"as long as you don't tell him my family business." he shrugs before closing his eyes. "now shut the fuck up."

"of course." mei smiles. "sleep well."
