it was supposed to be a zhangmei hangout today where they open their results together, however the results have been postponed to later today after being forced to come to this huge thing (which they haven't even been told about.)

inside a huge hall, was an event for universities in their area of seoul to celebrate all students' hard work in terms of exams. and coincidentally, both mei and hao were attending the event to represent their universities. it was only a handful of students from each school yet it was still packed inside.

mei was having a conversation with xiaoting and karina in the far corner. the two girls were trying to hide mei from the other students who were probably waiting to see her; after that whole livestream trauma, the girl was too scared to face any other student knowing she had a bad reputation after.

obviously, she's still trying to be nicer these days after getting a huge scolding and lecture by her parents and renjun. yet it wasn't easy when she still couldn't help but be unintentionally rude to strangers and new people.

she then feels a tap her on the back, causing her to turn around and glare at the person behind her. "why are you here?"

"having fun sitting here being a little pussy?" he snorts, mocking how mei was very obviously hiding away. "are you that scared to be here?"

she ignores his words. "why are you even at this event when you're just here for the attention?" she retorts, staring at his sly face.

"is that the only thing you can say to me when you probably only came here so everyone thinks you're mysterious and nice again?" he mocks, changing his tone to make fun of her. "if anyone was wanting all the attention, it's you."

she turns to xiaoting and karina who's mouths were agape. "i came here to represent myself, not talk to your know it all ass self."

he shrugs, leaning his hand on the back of her chair and smiling teasingly at her. "too bad, i'm sure you've been crying at the fact everyone went from being scared of you to just not liking you at all."

she scoffs. "you're insane. and take your hand off of my chair, freak." the girl shoves his hand off. this had somehow caused others in the hall to stop what they were doing to look over at their annoyed faces. "if you wanted to come here for my autograph then you could've just said so."

he laughs right in her face. "me? why would i want YOUR autograph? i don't think i'd be interested in people who live off their parents money."

"your parents probably don't even like you with that personality." she argues. "you're nothing but the looks and brains, trust me. i actually have a title."

the boy scoffs in disbelief from her harsh comeback. "your little title is gone now, and it's okay to be jealous that i'm good looking and you aren't."

"look at me." she demands, forcing his eyes on her which also led to many other people in the room trying to look over at her. "i'm surprised you're not in love with me."

"shut up, narcissist." he laughs, flicking her head back. "i wouldn't be in love with someone who's second place in her exams."

this had officially sparked something in mei as she somehow always finds the most offensive comments to be when about her rank. "did you not cheat for yours? top student this, top student that..." she snorts. "you probably did nothing to get to where you are."

"and neither did you." he shrugs. "money can just get you places." as he was rambling on and insulting the girl, xiaoting and karina were just completely taken aback by everything.

"look who's talking, you're so sensitive." mei snickers, pointing at him. "you really can't get s break, can you?"

"calling me sensitive when you decide to ignore me for ages, haven't you missed me?" he changes the tone in his voice again, and somehow it caused some other people to chuckle in the background.

"you were the one who ignored me in the first place!" mei scoffs in disbelief. "this is why i don't want to date you, hao." she rolls her eyes.

just by the mention of his name, the room went silent. hearing the drama between people your age yet not knowing them was too good to ignore – especially when it's two well known people who did are kind of recognised as the ones who kissed..

xiaoting's eyebrows furrow at how unusual their behaviour seemed. "acting like you didn't just tell me you liked me." he crosses his arms. "you're just salty about your rank."

"i'm not, i don't even have it yet." she leans back in her chair. "is that all you want to talk to me about? your confidence is too much." she tilts her head, expecting a big response.

"you literally haven't beat me yet and it's been months, you're trying too hard." hao teases her, patting her head jokingly. "you don't need to prove it to everyone else. since they're all silent, why don't you go tell them how dumb you really are?"

she looks up at him, glaring at his face from clearly being irked by his remarks. "stop trying to show off your big old rank." she flips him off before getting up. "fucking weirdo."

hao snorts, watching her back as she started stomping away. "what a snowflake." he hums, turning to renjun who had just been watching in silence. "i'll leave, have fun here though." he pats the boy's back before walking away himself.

the crowd diffuses into whispers as the main door had closed. it was so random that even the staff in the room were in surprise. after that short-lived quarrel between the two, the friends of both parties were in utter shock – why the fuck were they openly arguing in front of every top students in their area?

she sat in the car, ranting to yuta about the whole situation from earlier. "why does he decide to be a dickhead now??" she complains, pushing her hair back in frustration. "yuta what do i do?"

he sighs. "are you sure that he was being serious? that whole story was so random.." he looks at the younger's face to make sure she was telling the truth.

mei nods, trying to give him a convincing look. "it was random. we were fine earlier but then he texted me before i came into the hall that he doesn't like me so i got mad when he came up to me... like is he obsessed or what."

yuta was just as confused as anyone else was, and he raises a brow. "so like, you're not going to hang out later?" he refers to the hangout the two were supposed to have.

"well–" she was cut off by the sound of yuta's car door opening. the two turn around and then look at each other in surprise when hao just swiftly sat down in the backseat. "uh.."

yuta clears his throat, causing the boy to look up from his phone. "what?" he asks with attitude, yuta only replies with a slight gasp and glances at mei, indicating her to say something.

mei turns back to the boy again, and after making eye contact, they start laughing a little too loud. yuta on the other hand, was sat in utter shock and stayed silent as the two acted like nothing had happened.

"that was funny." she giggles, intertwining their hands and turning to yuta. "did it sound believable?" she asks with a huge grin, completely contrasting yuta's annoyed squint and straight lips.

"okay so you're laughing... can you explain?" he asks. "if you don't tell me non of you are getting a ride back." he threatens before sitting comfortably, waiting for the explanation.

"we planned that whole thing out." hao snorts. "the insults and everything, we were just trying to cause a scene because we're both attention seekers." he explains, patting mei's head.

yuta was still trying to process whatever the hell they were talking about. "so those weird insults you threw at each other was all planned?" he asks in confusion.

mei nods. "we just used it to leave early, and get attention." she chuckles, turning back to hao with a satisfied smile. "i feel like we did a good job."

"bro you were going off on me, i was surprised." hao scoffs, letting go of her hand. "anyway, should we go? i'm sure we all have important things to be doing."

"what a waste of my time." yuta sighs, starting the car. "you weren't even inside for longer than an hour..."the

"i guess that removed all of our dating allegations." hao snorts, pretending to wipe sweat from his forehead. "too much work for us, honestly."

mei giggles. "all that just so we can leave and hang out with each other."

"not very top student of you two.." yuta jokes.

after the ride home, it was safe to say that they successfully skipped the event just to be alone. if anything they were definitely feeling down bad by now knowing they caused a scene just to leave dramatically.

hao's head was resting on the girl's lap as she typed busily on her laptop full with university emails. the results of their other evaluation exam were coming out in a few minutes and the two were just laying on mei's bed, not even thinking about it.

she was playing with his hair with one hand as she searched for the email with the other. after having such a fun, healing month with everyone, she was happier than ever and wasn't so stressed about rankings.

"meiiii." the boy singsongs, tapping her wrist causing her to look down at him and hum. "can i tell you something? but you can't hate me."

mei nods, putting her laptop aside. "go on." she says as she lets the boy snuggle into her. considering they staged an argument about an hour ago was ironic by how quiet these two were being.

"do you remember when we got first on your last evaluation exam in my uni?" he asks softly, stroking her hair gently.

mei hums, beginning to play with his ring. "that really made me nervous, but what about it? that was time ago."

"well i kind of lied to you, i'm sorry mei." he sighs, causing her to pause and look at him with furrowed brows. "like for so long."

"what did you lie to me about?" mei asks with a concerned expression since there was no way they would start actually arguing.

he sighs, taking out his phone. "go through my emails and find the email from july." he hands it over to her guiltily, not daring to look up at her face.

she frowns but takes the phone and scrolls, trying to ignore the fact hao seemed really overwhelmed. once she found the one about exam results, the presses on it. and what she reads caused her to widen her eyes and gasp.

"Congratulations! You are Rank #2!"

"wait is this real?" she asks, looking over at him. "you got second???" she didn't know how to feel, but it was definitely a good feeling.

"why would i lie idiot." he chuckles. "are you not disappointed? or are you just happy that you officially beat me."

"both...?" she looks at the email again. "but. you. wait. what. i'm so confused. how?" she looks at him again. "and why do you seem so worried?"

"i cheated on that exam..." he confesses.

mei drops his phone onto the bed and she sits up properly. "you what?"

"my dad gave me the answer booklet for that exam, so i made sure to get at least one question wrong so that you could get a higher rank than me on your own." he explains, scratching the back of his neck.

"is that why you were acting so proud of me?" she asks with a giggle, earning a nod from hao. "that's so sweet of you.. but, why? you didn't need to do that at all."

"because i like you." he shrugs. "that's why."

"how dare you only tell me now." she crosses her arms. "i actually believed we just got first again. i feel betrayed by you."

"i felt bad." he shrugs with a small laugh. "i knew you were leaving and if you left without your own first place i know you'd feel gutted."

"you're just trying to show off how smart you are aren't you?" she clicks her tongue.

he chuckles. "what can i say?"

"oh wait i have something for you i forgot to say!" she giggles, getting up from her bed and taking his hand. "follow me to my garden."

"wait but mei-" he groans, shutting up as she began to drag the taller all around the mansion until she reaches the garden, which she never really goes to. "fucking hell miss rich, i've never been here before."

she snorts. "i barely come here, but i like the flowers and shit but i since you reminded me about something, i have something for you."

"what are you planning to propose to me or something?" he jokes, watching her coincidentally reach for a jewellery box in her pocket. "oh god what is this nepo baby shit."

she shuts him up using her index finger. "just look." she giggles, taking out a necklace with a cute, diamond treble cleff necklace. "it's cute right?"

"is it yours?" he asks, looking at the thing in awe. "it's really pretty."

"i just said it's for you, silly." she scoffs. "i have my own but it's in my room, but do you like it?"

he smiles at her. "i love it, thank you." he leans down to kiss her forehead. "but you're still matching with renjun and i'm still matching with hanbin.."

she shrugs. "so? two necklaces is fine, and the other necklaces looked like we were matching anyway. and we also have rings, so it's cuter."

"i swear your love language is just buying jewellery." he chuckles, earning a nod from mei who then went silent as she took the necklace into her hands.

as she leans into his ear, her hands were gently holding onto the necklace pieces that were going slowly behind his neck. "hao before i put this on can i ask you something?"

"go on.." he says, getting nervous from the whispering. they've been this close to each other before yet his heart was beating so fast he was worried that she could hear him. she was definitely good at making him nervous.

mei leaned back a little to lock eyes with the boy, giving him a soft smile. "okay so you better take me seriously," she starts with a snicker. making sure he was looking just at her. "will you be my musician boyfriend?"

his first reaction was a small laugh. "what kind of question is that?" he asks, wrapping both of his arms around her waist. "awh. i was going to ask you the same thing, silly girl."

she rolls her eyes. "i guess that's the first thing i beat you to then." she chuckles, still having her arms around his neck without clicking the pieces. "but i still need my answer, fucking idiot."

he pulls her closer to him. "of course, i'm surprised you even needed one." mei laughs and clicks the necklace behind him. she holds onto the pendant and grins before pulling him down into a sweet, official kiss.

a week later.

the two were supposed to be hanging out at mei's house today, but instead got an email from professor lee about his 'important duties' and asked the students to help him. they had already been here an hour and mei's attention was fully on the three girls.

little mirae, haerin and doah. the true zhangmei manifesters.

"sooo, are you dating?" haerin asks the two, her eyes still glued to the toy. "i was waiting.. but now you're not shouting at each other."

doah giggles behind mei as she brushes her hair. "my dad said you stopped seeing us because you got divorced."

"no!" mirae cries, gripping onto hao's finger. "don't divorce." she frowns, having her small violin dropped onto the floor.

"we won't." mei giggles. "so, girls, as we have another hour left, what do you want to do?" for the past hour, haerin was making bracelets with mei, and doah and mirae were playing violin with hao.

"let's dress him up!" mirae suggests, taking hao by the hand. "like a princess."

mei snorts. "absolutely, come on haohao! let's bring you to the vanity." she chucles, taking his hand and not letting him retort.

"why don't we put a dress on him too?" mei smirks, watching as hao looks up at her in shock and immediately started shaking his head. "i think he'd look nice."

"haha no guys.. i think that's a bad–" he laughs awkwardly, trying to convince the four silly girls to not sabotage him just this once.

"yes!" the three girls squeal and stop what they were doing to follow mei as she made her way to the walk in closet, hao anxiously following along.

"what dress should he wear?" mei asks, looking at her hundreds of dresses. "this one?" she points at a poofy dress. "or something kind of cool, like this?" she then picks up a shorter dress.

he was wishing the little girls would just pick the pink poofy one like he expected. but when all three of them pointed at the short red one, he felt like dying inside. "wait but–"

"great!" mei giggles, taking the dress and pushing him into a changing room. "we'll be back, stay here and don't touch anything okay?" the three nod and she follows hao inside.

he had his arms crossed and his expression was priceless. "you're actually going to make me do it?"

she snorts. "of course, now go wear this." she hands him the red dress and walks out. "if you're not ready in five minutes i'm telling my chefs not to cook for you."

as mei waited, her and the three girls were gossiping about hao as he got changed. but surprisingly, he was already changed and he clears his throat before stepping out.

mei's first reaction was a cackle. "i'm breaking up with you, your waist looks better than mine."

"pretty!" the three said perfectly at the same time. hao embarrassedly did a small twirl and pose to make them laugh, which did work.

"girls!" mei's mother walks in. "i made you some food! you can play again later, hurry up." she grins, picking up mirae. but once she notices hao, she snorts. "you look as pretty as my daughter in that."

mei giggles. "right? and we'll come down in a bit." she says, letting her mother walk down with the three girls.

mei takes her phone out. "this is blackmail."

"how did you even think of everything?" she complains, pointing at his top student ass work that she knew she could master. "you think you're all that just because you're zhanghao."

hao shrugs, placing the pen onto the desk before pecking mei's lips. "i don't know, i'm just better than you unfortunately."

she pulls herself closer to him and grins right in his face. "say that again and i'm actually going to scream. i hate you." she rolls her eyes from his silence and gasps when she noticed something on her laptop. "oh shit so they're actually doing ranks in the country?" mei turns her laptop to him, showing the official rankings in the country amongst their age. once they read their own ranks, she slaps his arm. "i'm SECOND. i hate you. this is why hanbin didn't like you." she huffs.

"awh, i was going to say congrats but that insult was too far mei.." he shakes his head in disappointment. "looks like you're still a loser no matter what."

she scoffs and turns her back to him. "yeah no. i hate you."

"aww but i like you." he says mockingly, trying to get her to face him. "this is when you look at me and tell me how much you like maybe

she continues to ignore him and have her head turned away with crossed arms as he kept trying to pull her back to him.

"mei look at me or we're breaking up."

"okay damn fine." she rolls her eyes, turning back to him. "you're so annoying."

he laughs and cups her face. "you're more annoying than me but i don't complain."

as her door bursts open, mei's father storms in. "how the hell did you two become first and second in the whole country?" mei's dad asks in surprise, showing a picture of the rankings.

"i know right, how am i not at the top? this shit is rigged." she fake sobs, falling back onto her chair in distress. "i can't even believe this."

"only a genius could beat me." he shrugs at the man. mei's father pats hao on the back with a chuckle. "it would've been rigged if you won, mei."

"get a life you five apples tall freak." she rolls her eyes, waiting until her dad had finally left the room. once the door closes, she pulls him down to her level. "you made me sad, where's my apology."

he snorts "right here, nepo baby." he then connects their lips, knowing that their rivalry will still exist even if they were split apart this time. at least from now, they won't be as far onto each other's throats.

"okay, that was kind of cute. i kind of want to show you off now." she giggles, cupping his face before peppering his face with kisses. "it's time for the hard launch!!"

he leans back. "absolutely not, i thought you said give it a week!" he whines.

"it HAS been a week." she hits his arm. "you're going to hard launch me though, i'm too cool to do it first."

he scoffs, picking his phone up. "fine, only because i'm sick of seeing a bunch of attractive men in your messages and comments." he seemed like a hypocrite, since both of them have always had so many people in their message requests. however mei's were definitely way worse, so he picked a photo of just mei that only he had to show her off properly.
