PROLOGUE
The room was too quiet.
A low hum of machinery filled the sterile air, the only sound in an otherwise suffocating silence. The light above flickered, casting pale reflections on the cold steel surfaces. In the center of the room, a young man lay strapped to a table, his eyes wide with fear, pupils darting back and forth, searching for escape but he knew there was none.
There was none.
"Subject A-047," a voice broke the quiet, emotionless and clinical. Dr. Lisbeth Kane stood at the foot of the table, her gloved hands clasped together as she observed the monitors beside her. "Vitals are stable. Begin phase three of the procedure."
An assistant, face hidden behind a surgical mask, moved swiftly, inserting a syringe into the IV line attached to the subject’s arm. The liquid inside shimmered, dark and iridescent, swirling like a storm trapped in glass. As it entered his bloodstream, the young man’s body tensed, his muscles locking as though his entire nervous system was being set on fire.
He gasped.
A shuddering exhale. Then nothing.
Dr. Kane raised an eyebrow, stepping closer to the subject’s side. "Resistance is higher than expected. Increase dosage."
The assistant complied, and this time, the reaction was immediate.
The young man screamed.
It wasn't the sound of pain or fear, but something far more primal. His back arched violently off the table, every muscle in his body fighting against the restraints. His veins pulsed, glowing faintly beneath his skin, as if something was coursing through him—alive, sentient, uncontrollable.
Dr. Kane watched with interest, noting the rapid changes. His pulse spiked, his eyes dilated to black, and the skin around his wrists and neck began to crack under the strain. The monitors beeped erratically, but Kane didn’t flinch.
"Subject A-047," she said softly, leaning in as the young man’s eyes locked onto hers, wild and desperate, "you will be the breakthrough."
A tremor ran through him. His body convulsed, and for a moment, the entire room seemed to vibrate. Metal trays rattled, and the lights overhead flickered once, twice, before plunging the room into brief darkness.
When the light returned, something had changed.
A lot has changed.
The young man lay still, his chest rising and falling with shallow breaths. The restraints around his wrists had melted—twisted metal, softened to liquid. His eyes opened slowly, and this time, they were glowing.
"Interesting," Kane whispered, stepping back, her face illuminated by the unnatural light coming from the subject’s eyes. "Prepare for observation. We’ll need to run further tests."
The assistant hesitated. "Doctor, his heart rate... it's—"
The man on the table sat up suddenly, faster than any human should have been able to move. The assistant stumbled back, their eyes wide with shock. Kane, however, remained unmoved.
"Subject A-047, welcome to evolution."
The man’s breath came in sharp, ragged gasps, his glowing eyes fixed on Kane as if something inside him had awakened, something that neither of them fully understood. But it was there now—alive, potent, dangerous.
And under her control.
Or so she thought.
